"Bhaalspawn" is a template that can be added to any dragon, fey, giant, humanoid, monstrous humanoid, outsider, or shapechanger (referred to hereafter as the "base creature"). The creature's type changes to "outsider." It uses all the base creature's statistics and special abilities...

For context, if you're confused by "template," in 3.5e when a character was unusual in some way the template was a bunch of extra rules you put on top of the "base creature" (so if a human is a Chosen, or had unusual parentage such as being Half-dragon, or in this case having Bhaal for a father, you start with a human character and then put the template's mechanics and rules on top of the "base" human ones)

But moving onto what caught my eye; the mortal parents of Bhaalspawn belonged to categories including: "dragon, fey, giant, humanoid, monstrous humanoid, outsider, or shapechanger."

Bhaal what (who?) the hell were you doing. I mean I already had an idea, but what, are there dryad Bhaalspawn? Pixies? Lemures??

Also; "The creatures type changes to "outsider.""

Uuuuh... Turns out - in tabletop rules at least - Bhaalspawn are not even human[oid]!

Outsiders are things like elementals, devils, demons, celestials, modrons...

Honestly that would make a lot of sense regarding dying in BG1+2 where you just get insta game over when you die, your body dissolves into ashes and your soul fucks off to the Throne of Blood.

"Unlike most other living creatures, an outsider does not have a dual nature; its soul and body form one unit. When an outsider is slain, no soul is set loose. Spells that restore souls to their bodies, such as raise dead, reincarnate, and resurrection, don’t work on an outsider. It takes a different magical effect, such as limited wish, wish, miracle, or true resurrection to restore it to life. An outsider with the native subtype can be raised, reincarnated, or resurrected just as other living creatures can be."

When a creature of the outsider type dies outside of their native plane, their body disintegrates (or something like that) and reforms on their home plane. If Bhaalspawn are outsiders considered native to their father's domain in the Lower Planes, they'll return there on death and reform (and would only be permanently destroyed if they died within the plane itself).

They didn't explain this in game, but since the article is written by the original game writers, I assume this is how it worked in-game. I thought it was being innately tied to Bhaal, but no, it's the plane itself.

This is more relevant to Charname, Imoen, Sarevok and the original games because Larian paid absolutely no attention to that part of those games but HUH.

I got to think how Mirdania tried on one of the rings and saw Sauron's true Maia form. She described him a tall being made of flames with "pitiless eyes." Honestly, it reminded me of how he appeared to Galadriel and company in the Hobbit Series before she went all Dark Uinen/Magical Ex on him. 😏 I honestly like the idea that as gods, the Maiar are formed of the natural wonders they represent. They have human(oid) forms, but their truest forms are as elementals. It also fits Tolkien's lore because he described Uinen's long wavy hair being the actual waves of the sea and covering the world. I also think their truest elemental selves can also be beautiful, but in a rather eldritch way that can terrify most beings like Mirdania was. It reminds me how in Biblical lore, angels are divinely beautiful, but also totally scary and alien-looking, hence why when they appear they tell mortals "Be not afraid!" LOL

I thought the same thing. It really is like that with the eldritch horrors, the various types of angels in the Bible (more so Old Testament), or like in Guillermo del Toro's movies (which I do love most of his LOL) which he's stated he's done to look like those too. I do like the idea too that they take on the elements of their powers with that form too.

Though in eternal slumber, trapped somewhere they don't even know, the apocalypse siblings have managed to manifest their consciousness to roam the living world and observe it.

However, they are but frail, mortal Cookies in this form. Though they may use their five senses, they cannot impact the world around them in a way that matters. They may disappear and reappear at will, making many who have seen them believe they are ghosts, which is partially and technically true.

Dalgona Ivory appears as a sickly Cookie with strange underbaked dough (or rubbery skin if you're thinking human(oid), Pepper X appears as a strong warrior, Black Coffee appears as a physically frail wizard, and Fugu appears as a mere traveler.

What are they up to? Whatever Cookies do I guess?
