this is obviously like a bone-deep betrayal of his father's values (loving the republic for all its faults; maybe not even really registering those faults thru a distorted lens of privilege and misplaced nostalgia), but if i were writing this part i'd have someone step to marcus on his little sulla-cosplay march into the city and be like your father would be ashamed of you. and all marcus can think is well probably not. bc his father was his mother's dog and so is he.

thinking about macula again. i think like 25 years post-game when her son is of age he marches on rome bc of some (real or perceived) slight against himself or macula and (because her nomen is veturia, lol) they do coriolanus 2.0 except instead of begging him to stay his blade etc. she's like. go nuts w/ my blessing kid. and bc he has inherited obsessive loyalty from his father and some serious mommy issues from macula he goes ahead w/ it and appoints her to the throne...

#i do think that caeso knew the best he could hope for was to delay macula's ambition #probably the thinking was like. hey we have 18 years til this kid is grown maybe i'll die and the problem will just... go away #which is more or less what ends up happening i think #he's like on the verge of peacing out and sees his wife who has never missed a day of training in 30 years and daydreams abt consular purpl #and his strapping son who would do anything and everything for her attention #and he's like eeeeehhhhh i don't know about this one guys. oh well--#OH and like 10yrs before that claudiana passes away and makes her Final Confession abt the father of her children #and caeso is just staggered by how rigged this whole game was. he was fucked from the very beginning.#since he was 16 years old. desperately vying for the legate's attention. he's been suckered in since then. tragic
