Atlantis được thần Poseidon xây dựng: Tương truyền, Atlantis được thần Poseidon xây dựng để gây ấn tượng với một phụ nữ bình thường có tên Cleito. Vị thần biển này đã đi khắp thế giới để tìm hòn đảo lớn nhất. Khi tới nơi, ông thấy những người xinh đẹp và thông minh hơn bất cứ ai trên thế giới. Đó là nơi ông gặp Cleito và đem lòng yêu bà. Plato là người đầu tiên viết về Atlantis: Trong một tài liệu tên Timaeus được viết vào khoảng năm 360 trước Công nguyên, Plato mô tả về Atlantis là một hòn đảo nằm giữa Đại Tây Dương, có kích cỡ bằng Lybia và châu Á. Đồi Cleito: Theo các mô tả, Atlantis là một kỳ quan kiến trúc, với những công trình to lớn được xây dựng quanh đồi Cleito, nơi người vợ của thần Poseidon sinh sống. Tuy nhiên, điều đó không ngăn được nhiều người tin Atlantis được che giấu khỏi mắt người thường. Một giả thuyết khác cho rằng Atlantis nằm ở Azores, nhưng giả thyết này đã bị loại bỏ.
