Could I request a Kenji x Reader where the reader is an Ailen who is very much stranded on Earth and on The run from the KDF who wants access to their tech
Among the Stars I
Kenji Sato x Alien!Reader
Word Count: 1,766
Genre/Warning: Falling in Love, Friends to Lovers, Slow Burn
Author’s Note: To me, reader is an alien in the sense that she is a foreigner to this planet; how she looks is up to you. Takes place after Emi. AND I THINK AOSHIMA DESERVES RECOGNITION LIKE 🫢 AIN’T HE HOT TOO?????
MASTERLIST
The stars twinkled in the dark expanse of space as you navigated through the cosmos. This wasn’t the first time you traversed through the void. In fact, you were a professional at this.
Being one of the respected astrophysicists of your planet, you have always been one sent on space voyages. Your mission was simple, something you were good at, so what could possibly go wrong?
At least that’s what you thought a few moments ago.
"Engine malfunction detected. Immediate landing required.”
As if the flashing red lights and blaring alarms weren’t enough, the onboard AI wouldn’t shut up either, all of them adding up to the panic in your already pounding heart.
“Engine failure. Emergency landing procedure initiated.”
Your struggle to regain control was hopeless. Assessing your options, Earth was the nearest habitable planet. With no time to spare, you steered the spacecraft towards the blue planet.
The descent was turbulent, flames licking at the hull as the spacecraft entered Earth's atmosphere. You gritted your teeth, fighting to maintain the little control you had left.
Scanning the residential area that stretched beneath, you spotted a forested area and made a split-second decision. With expert precision, your maneuver slowed down the descent just enough to avoid a catastrophic impact.
The spacecraft touched down with a jolt, skidding through the underbrush before coming to a stop. Smoke billowed from the damaged engines and you knew you needed to secure the craft first.
Despite the damage, the emergency propulsion system still had enough power for short-distance travel. With steady hands, you activated the system again, guiding the spacecraft toward a nearby body of water.
The craft hovered momentarily above with a soft hum. Carefully pushing the controls, you maneuvered it into a controlled descent where it submerged beneath the water, disappearing from view.
In the control room of the Kaiju Defense Force, monitors flickered with data streams from satellite scans displaying Japan’s airspace and terrestrial activity.
"Report," Aoshima commanded.
"Sir, we've detected a significant impact in sector 7G. Satellite images indicate a disturbance in the forested area, consistent with an object of considerable mass landing."
Aoshima scrutinized the images, noting the telltale signs of a recent crash landing, “Any signs of the object itself?"
"Negative visual confirmation, sir. The object appears to have made impact and then moved into concealment."
"Prepare a recon team," Aoshima ordered crisply. "I want a full scan of the area. Notify all units in the vicinity to be on alert."
Aoshima contemplated the implications. For years, KDF had struggled against the relentless onslaught of kaiju attacks under Dr. Onda. His last will was for the survival of KDF.
Aoshima shared Dr. Onda’s vision and if this alien technology held the key to turning the tide in humanity's favor, they couldn't afford to hesitate.
Meanwhile, having just emerged from the submerged spacecraft, you cautiously explored the area. Your advanced sensors warned you of Earth's surveillance systems, but you had hoped to remain undetected.
Your hope, however, was short-lived as the sound of whirring and a shadow passing overhead alerted you to the arrival of drones. Quickly, you dashed into the forest, heart pounding as you navigated the unfamiliar terrain.
Above you, the drones buzzed in pursuit, their sensors tracking your every move. Their operators relayed your position to ground units, who quickly mobilized to intercept.
You emerged onto the outskirts of a bustling city. Buildings towered overhead and streets were crowded with unsuspecting pedestrians. You had to blend in to evade capture.
Tokyo has always been bustling with a sea of people moving with purpose. Among them was Kenji and today, his life would take a turn he could never have predicted.
He was jogging through a quieter part of the city when suddenly, a force collided with him, nearly knocking him off balance. Looking down, he saw a woman his age, face partially obscured by a hooded cloak.
You looked up at him, eyes wide with fear. "I'm sorry," you gasped, glancing over your shoulder. "I... I need to go."
Before Kenji could respond, you tried to bolt, but he gently grabbed your arm. "Hey, what's going on?” He asked, genuinely concerned. “You look terrified."
You hesitated, clearly torn between fear and the need for help. Before you could decide, KDF agents appeared at the end of the street.
“Surrender peacefully, and we won't harm you," one of them demanded sternly.
"No," you replied, a slight determination in your trembling voice.
Kenji’s instincts flared. To him, KDF has been nothing but trouble. So without a word, he pulled you behind him, putting himself between you and the agents.
They slowed, eyes narrowing at Kenji. "This is official business," the leader said, his voice cold. "Step aside."
Kenji ignored the command, gripping your hand tighter. "Run," he whispered urgently, before leading you in a sprint away from KDF.
The two of you took off with Kenji guiding you through a series of narrow alleyways and bustling streets.
"Over here," he whispered, pulling you into a side street. You dodged through a market, running between stalls and startled shoppers. The KDF was temporarily delayed by the crowd, buying you precious seconds.
Kenji's heart pounded, both from the exertion and the adrenaline. "Keep your hood up," he urged you. "We can't let them see your face."
You continued running, the sound of pursuit growing fainter. Kenji led you through a maze of side streets, finally emerging onto a quieter residential road.
"Almost there," he panted, squeezing your hand reassuringly.
Finally, you reached a house guarded by a big gate on the outskirts of the city. Kenji quickly unlocked the gate and ushered you towards the house.
Inside, Kenji guided you to the living room, where you sank onto the couch, hood falling back and revealing your face.
“Mina, emergency analysis,” he said as a spherical robot hovered towards you, red light scanning your body.
"Scan complete," Mina announced. "Subject is experiencing elevated stress levels and minor physical exhaustion. No immediate threats and no tracking devices detected.”
"Thank you," you said, voice filled with gratitude and lingering fear.
Kenji nodded, breathing heavily. "Are you okay?"
You nodded, her gaze lingering on him with a mix of surprise and curiosity, “I didn't expect anyone to help."
"I'm Kenji," he introduced himself, extending a hand.
You hesitated briefly before shaking his hand, "I'm (y/n)."
"You can catch your breath here,” Kenji said, standing up. “I'll get us some water." He returned with two glasses of water; you accepted one gratefully.
"Why were those guys after you?" Kenji asked, his curiosity piqued.
"I'm not from Earth. I'm…” you hesitated but you owed him an explanation and also to save you from the trouble of pretending. “…an alien."
"An alien?” He blinked in surprise. “But you look human."
"Alien in the sense that I'm from a distant planet," you explained softly. "I crash-landed here not long ago.”
You told him everything—your mission, how you ended up being chased by what he referred to as the Kaiju Defense Force, and your spacecraft.
“I would like to ask another favor if it’s not too much,” you said with hesitation; Kenji helping you escape and sheltering you was already more than enough. “I need you to help me find Ultraman.”
You knew about Ultraman and his origin. You’ve been sent to Nebula M78 a couple of times already. If there’s someone who could help you get back to your planet, it’s him.
“Ultraman?” Kenji's eyes widened. “Why?"
“I know of him,” you said. "He might be the only one who can help me.”
Kenji took a deep breath, realizing he couldn't keep his secret any longer. "Well, there’s something you should know,” he said.
“What is it?” You asked, confused.
He looked straight into your eyes, his face set with resolve, “I'm Ultraman."
The room fell silent. "You're...” your eyes widened. “Ultraman?"
Kenji nodded, “Yes, and I’m not supposed to tell anyone but if helping you means revealing it, then so be it."
Your eyes teared up with joy. Just when you thought that this day was full of bad luck, here came your silver lining—a stunning man one at that.
Kenji asked you about the whereabouts of your spacecraft so he, in his Ultraman form, can bring it here in no time. His house had a basement submerged underwater which provided an easy way to bring it over.
His dad, the previous Ultra, happened to live with him. Kenji explained the situation and his dad, an expert in this field, generously offered to help.
Hayao circled the craft, examining it closely. "Impressive design," he muttered, running his hands over the hull. "But clearly, it's been through a lot."
"I think it’s the power core," you explained. "It was heavily depleted during the crash, and I can't get the ship operational again."
"I see. A power core like this...” Hayao nodded thoughtfully. “…it's incredibly advanced. Recharging it with Earth's technology would be almost impossible."
"So, there's no way to fix it?" You looked at him, worried and on the brink of tears.
"Not exactly,” he smiled reassuringly. “While we can't recharge it with conventional means, there might be another way. We need an alternative energy source—something with immense power."
"What about the energy that powers Ultraman?” Kenji stepped forward. “Could it work?"
Hayao considered this, nodding slowly. "It's possible,” he said. “Ultraman's energy is vast and unique. We might be able to transfer some of it to the power core."
Your eyes lit up with hope, “Do you think it could really work?" Hayao placed a reassuring hand on your shoulder, "It's worth a try.”
He explained that he would first need to create an energy transfer device. But with the resources here on Earth, it’s a trial and error to see which would be compatible with your spacecraft. Needless to say, it would take a lot longer before you could go back home.
Kenji led you down a hallway to a cozy guest room. He opened the door, revealing a spacious room with a bed, a dresser, and a big window overlooking the bay.
“You can stay here until we figure everything out,” Kenji said. “It's safer than being out there with the KDF looking for you."
"Are you sure?” You looked up at him. “I don't want to be a burden."
"You're not a burden,” he smiled reassuringly. “I’ll leave you to get some rest. We've got a lot to do tomorrow."
With that, you settled into the room with a sense of peace for the first time since crashing on Earth.

18: Heart of Steel
art by @exorbitantsqueakingnoises
you are a relic of a bygone era, a being created to interface with both man and machines when a tenuous peace still existed between the two. after millennia of stasis, you awaken to a horrific future of endless war. the ones who found you are convinced that you're a living avatar of their machine god and their worship is relentless, invasive curiosity.
->warhammer 40k. original skitarii characters/reader. explicit; contains non-con, gangbang, depression, mentions of self-harm via personal neglect/refusing to eat, surreal robot sex, power imbalance.

Explorator Fleet Spira Mirabilis is unshakably certain that they found God on a failed world smoldering in the glare of twin suns. Whatever lived there once was driven underground by a catastrophic atmospheric generator failure, solar radiation and blistering heat scouring a surface pockmarked by ancient wars. Nothing but rust and ruin remained above ground but the Hephaesian detected persistent electrical currents and the steady thrum of advanced processors—the heartbeat of ancient machinery somewhere beneath the blowing dust.
What they found was a subterranean city-complex dating back to the Dark Age of Technology, magnificent and treacherous with its scan-scramblers and buzzing swarms of malicious code injector-nanites, defenses that confirmed the pricelessness of this discovery. What they found was a single operational stasis pod of unknown make or model, a relic in its own right with a sloping white frame of synthesized organo-mechnical compounds operating in perfect, self-repairing harmony. What they found was God in the machine, a symbiosis of human-born and human-forged perfection. An avatar of the Omnissiah, divine and dreaming.
What they found was you, and you have suffered ever since.
“Query: Are you well?”
Your ears hear a heavy clanking-clicking metallic gait and garbled mechanical vocalizations like the grind of printer components. Could be anyone. But your neural nodes identify Laurintius and deny a probing attempt at wireless connection. It doesn’t matter that speechless, direct communication would be more expedient. You don’t want him in your head because he always starts poking and prodding, and then there’s no hiding from the constant stream of unsettling worship. “Most holy host-vessel god machine anointed one syncretic masterpiece-being,” on and on and on. You curl up on your side in bed and roll over to stare at the candles slowly melting into white, waxy puddles in their alcove. If you look the other way, there are steel pews. A polished floor. A red carpet rolled down the aisle.
Where there was once an altar, there is now a bed. Enormous and rounded rather than rectangular, the metal frame sits directly on the ground with purely decorative protrusions jutting from the exterior. The mattress is stiff and the sheets are all the same stark white, the entire thing meant to mirror the eerie skull inside a cog crest mounted on the wall.
Where there was once an altar, there is now you. They come in droves seeking guidance you don’t have and wisdom you can’t fathom.
“I’m not god,” you’ve said more times than you can count. “Please listen to me. Please. I’m not.”
“A riddle,” they say, and begin debating mathematical logic. “Determine: set of all deities that excludes Omnissiah? An empty set.”
Laurintius clatters closer. “Requesting access to your nodal pathways.”
“Denied,” you mutter.
He tries anyway. You roll over and glare at him when he runs up against your firewall. If he has a face under his hood and behind a mass of respirator apparatuses, glowing ocular sensors and coolant tubes, you suspect it doesn’t look apologetic. His faith requires the asking of questions and his personal proclivities permit the pushing of boundaries. God is a mystery to unravel and it’s his moral imperative to investigate. “Objective: medical scan,” he says innocently. His mechadendrites squirm in the air like metal serpents, each tipped with some grasping limb or vicious equipment meant for dismantling.
“You don’t need access to my nodes to run a medical scan,” you say.
“Improved efficiency, data yield.”
You run the scan yourself and send the results. Laurintius’ oculars, a spider-like arrangement of six cyan lights set in the metal mask of his face, flicker briefly as he checks the data. “Sleep deprivation. Stress hormones. Malnutrition,” he reads, the vox projector hooked directly into his throat crackling with outrage. “Hypothesis: faulty hibernation protocols impacted self-preservation instinct. Body systems interconnected. Disregard for flesh-components negatively impacts neural node function. Level of concern increasing.” He pauses when you roll over again, ignoring him. He says, only very slightly softer, “You are harming yourself.”
You don’t move and you don’t speak. Laurintius stands there for a long time in silence. You can hear his internal cooling systems whirring loudly as his processors heat up in frantic contemplation. The slow, slithering approach of a mechadendrite makes no sound but your nodes detect movement behind you. The warning is the only reason you have time to react. Laurintius’ reflexes are faster. By the time you’ve turned around and scrambled upright, he’s already at the edge of the bed, metal tendril raised like a stinger and curled all the way around you, a direct interfacing knob poised at the nape of your neck. The port there, a silver aperture meant for maintenance set into your skin, just barely slams shut before he tries to force entry. You feel metal strike metal, a hiss of sparks. The knob bounces off your port’s shutter and scrapes uselessly across your skin.
Laurintius’ oculars dim and he steps back quickly. You don’t like to encourage his assertions of godhood, but you can’t help a petty jab. “That seemed like sacrilege,” you say. His mechadendrites flinch, retreating behind him like scolded dogs.
“Statement false,” he insists. “Intention: render aid.”
“Please leave me alone.”
Laurintius stares at you for an unsettlingly long moment in silence, and then he bows stiffly. You watch him walk back down the aisle, vanishing into the cavernous halls beyond the chapel. Too easy, you think. He never leaves without more of a fight. Just as he vanishes from range, a cluster of new familiar signatures register.
A truly incomprehensible number of crew populate the Hephaesian, a ship so gargantuan it generates its own gravitational forces, but only a handful are permitted to interact with you directly. Most are exalted tech-priests but there are exceptions, and those very exceptions approach the chapel now. Their footsteps are lighter than Laurintius but louder when they move in perfect lockstep. There are ten of them. They file into the chapel single-file and fan out in two rows of five once they stand before you. Each kneels in unison. Each bows their head. Quiet prayers and shrill conversions of hymnal data into crunching, staticy audio fill the air.
These are the skitarii—soldiers devoted to the Adeptus Mechanicus until death, red cloaks draped over patchwork bodies of flesh and steel. This was the team dispatched into the buried city where you slept for millennia. They were the ones who stumbled upon your stasis pod and, on Laurintius’ orders, activated the waking cycle. Their faces were the first ones you saw and their voices were the first ones you heard. It confounds the tech-priests of the Spira Mirabilis that it isn’t the most devout and enlightened of their order that you willingly invite into your presence but rather their lowly servants. Some have taken it as a test of faith while a less frustrating subset have begun to ruminate on what your behavior might mean.
Laurintius is far more astute and pragmatic than the rest. He understands it’s a matter of simple preference: you like the skitarii. He’s more than willing to use that to his advantage.
The first to lift his head is Unit AM/TZ-3B-Rubedo, Vanguard and squad leader. The sight of him without his helmet—the sight of flesh, however little—still startles you. He has a sickly, pallid complexion, green eyes framed by brown curls. His veins are prominent and discolored from combat stimulant use, blackish-indigo straining under the skin. His lower jaw and neck are a black synthetic material, segmented and flexible. It stifles his smile, limits it to his remaining upper lip, but you’re no less charmed than the first time you saw it.
“It is the greatest honor to stand before you,” Rubedo says, his voice only slightly modulated.
“It’s good to see you again, too,” you tell him.
The skitarii worship you, but they’re less stubborn than the tech-priests. They listen when you ask them to address you without honorifics and staggering, minute-long warbling binharic titles. They acquiesce when you beg them not to prostrate themselves on the floor whenever you make a request. You try not to think too much about the fact that this is by design. They were made this way, raised in the cult of the Mechanicus and forged for absolute obedience to their superiors. They are willing to humor you, at least. To pretend you’re not too sacred to touch. When you gesture for them to approach, they crowd around you like children gathered to hear a bedtime story. “Are you bored today? Can we bring you anything?” Rubedo asks, eyeing the stack of thick, yellowed tomes piled beside the bed. Historical texts, mostly. Ancient relics Laurintius provided to keep your mind off your misery. You haven’t opened even one of them yet.
“Not bored,” you admit. “Just sad.”
The skitarii puzzle over your words. “Sad. Sad? Chemical response to distress. No danger detected.”
“Like…” You try to come up with something comparable. They’ve all had emotional dampeners installed. “Like when you’re in battle, and your leg is injured. Something hits you hard enough to knock you down and a wire snaps, or your hydraulics are damaged.”
“That triggers retaliation protocols,” Rubedo says.
“After that,” you insist. “After the battle’s over and you get back to the ship, and you realize you need repairs. It might be a while before you’ll see combat again.” They let out a collective trill of solemn understanding.
“You were damaged?” a ranger asks, clutching the bed frame so hard that his metal fingers leave a dent. “What is responsible? We will hunt it.”
You shake your head. “No damage. There are other things that can make someone sad.”
Rubedo seats himself on the edge of the bed, offering his hand. His sleeve slides back to his elbow, revealing a sturdy limb of rigid armor plating atop digits with inhuman flexibility and articulation. It’s not flesh—it’s not even warm—but it’s a familiar shape. A palm to slot yours against, fingers to lace with yours. Slowly, he guides you into his lap. It doesn’t matter that it’s awkward to straddle his stiff codpiece and firm, metal thighs through the thick material of his fatigues. He holds you and no one else will. You rest your head against the skull crest emblazoned on his breastplate and listen to the chugging rhythm of life support systems and synthetic organs while his hand smooths over your head in soft, soothing motions. The other skitarii press in as close as they can, masks and respirators nuzzling against your legs.
“The Archmagos forwarded a concerning report,” he says gently. You take a deep breath and let it out as a sigh. “I understand his methods may have caused additional distress, but he is trying to help.”
You frown against his chest. “I don’t want his help.”
“If you tell him what is making you sad—”
“It’s everything, Rubedo,” you insist. “Everything makes me sad. I hate being stuck on this ship. I hate being treated like a specimen, or a reliquary. I hate the whole galaxy and what’s happened to it. Why are you always fighting something? Why is there war everywhere, all the time?”
“TACHYCARDIA DETECTED.” Your jaw is grasped, firmly but carefully, by knife-like fingers. Unit K-LW-105-Argyros crouches on your other side, his knee threatening to rip a hole in the mattress. He’s a Ruststalker, more machine than the rest of them, head enclosed in a gas mask and legs replaced with powerful digitigrade structures that make him loom over you.
“Gently,” Rubedo reminds him. “Flesh bruises.”
Argyros makes an unpleasant sound like a bad vox connection. “UNIT REQUESTING COMMAND.”
You smile sadly. Argyros strokes your cheek with the utmost caution, a careful caress with the dull back edge of his curved dagger-fingers. “I don’t have any commands for you, Argyros. I’m just having a bad day. I appreciate that you’re here.”
“Would you like it if we brought you meals instead of Laurintius?” Rubedo suggests. “Perhaps we could stay with you while you eat. Keep you company.”
“Aren’t you too busy for that?”
He gives you that ghost of a half-smile, a sweet expression that makes your heart beat faster. “We have been retasked.”
“To me?” you ask, incredulous. “Isn’t that boring?”
The skitarii make a simultaneous sound, incessant beeps and grating noises. Disagreement, you’re guessing. “No. Not boring. Never boring,” they all chatter at once, eager to have your attention. “Combat prowess will remain unaffected with regular sparring. New training regimen focused on defensive formations.” They’re probably getting rewired, you realize, converted into bodyguards who get a rush of reward chemicals for maintaining your safety. Selfishly, you don’t mind. You’d rather they remain here than die forgotten on some distant battlefield.
“I think I’d like that,” you say.
They’re quiet suddenly. You look up and find Rubedo and Argyros staring at one another, probably having a conversation on a communication channel you aren’t privy to. Rubedo strokes the back of your head. Argyros’ head bows slightly in what looks like reluctance.
“REQUESTING NODE ACCESS,” he says.
You huff out a bitter laugh. “Is that why you’re here? Laurintius couldn’t get in so he asked you to try?”
“REQUEST…DENIED?”
“Yes. I’m sorry, Argyros. I really don’t want—”
You hear a muted click of metal prongs sliding firmly into metal slots, a catch mechanism securing. You look up at Rubedo with wide, betrayed eyes. You see just a twinge of guilt before it vanishes; quarantined wherever he banishes emotions he has no time to process, replaced by steady certainty. His hand slipped down to the nape of your neck when you weren’t paying attention, pushing something into your port. “Rubedo?” you say hoarsely. He’s given someone remote access. You feel your firewalls fizzling out.
“Stating apology.” Laurintius' voice speaks directly into your head. “Deception necessary. Circumstances dire. It is not sacrilege if it deepens understanding.”
You bite back a sob. It’s not fair. You know he’s used the skitarii to nudge you whichever way he wants, watching through their eyes and listening through their ears, but he’s never been so direct before. You’re furious and you can’t do anything about it. You twist your fingers in the fabric of Rubedo’s cloak and he murmurs an apology, pressing his lips to the top of your head. “Get out!” you cry. “I don’t want you there! I don’t trust you!” You’ve barely raised your hands to reach for the back of your neck when Argyros lunges, trapping both of your arms behind your back in an unshakable iron grip. “Rubedo, please, help me!”
Rubedo cups your cheek with his hand. “I am helping you,” he says. “The Archmagos can heal you. Do not struggle.”
You struggle as hard as you can. There’s no breaking out of Argyros’ grip but you can make Laurintius’ search more difficult, partitioning off parts of your mind from his probing searches and overclocking your nodes. It’s a dangerous, foolish thing to do—you feel feverish, your head aching and a trickle of blood dribbling from your nose. Argyros pleads with you to stop in a deafeningly shrill voice like an emergency alarm. Rubedo risks frying his nervous system when he makes a tentative connection, his presence cool and soothing in the back of your mind.
In a panic, Laurintius fumbles something. Trips the wrong nerve cluster, maybe. You have no idea what goes wrong but a bolt of searing, mind-numbing pleasure shoots down your spine and you’re driven directly into climax between the skitarii.
Complete stillness and silence follow. You hide your face in Rubedo’s chest. You can just barely feel Laurintius plucking through your head slower and softer, checking for brain damage. Argyros is completely silent, like he just shut down in sheer terror. “Stating additional apology,” Laurintius says, sounding bewildered. “You are uninjured?” You’re still catching your breath. You nod weakly. You don’t want to think about the noise you made a second ago, or how you arched your back and bucked wildly against Rubedo’s codpiece. You feel overheated and tingly. “You are relaxed,” Laurintius says. His curious tone makes you sit up straighter in alarm. “That relaxed you immensely. Noting a sharp increase in serotonin and oxytocin.”
“No,” you say quickly. You try to move but Argyros is holding you even more tightly. Rubedo looks at you like he’s just glimpsed a miracle. “No, no, no, we’re not doing this. You can’t just—”
“Hypothesis,” Laurintius says, sounding far too excited. “Copulation will improve mood, cooperativeness. Uploading test program now.” There’s one last moment of calm before the storm, oculars glittering limbs twitching as the skitarii download new instructions and battle plans. Then they’re on you.
The skitarii move with the same perfect coordination they use in battle, positioning themselves around you in a strategic formation. You’re caressed by dozens of hands all at once, over and under your clothes. The ones with sharp, weaponized digits use only their blunt palms while the ones with softer silicone hand sheaths have the privilege of accessing your more vulnerable flesh. Argyros frees up his hands by tying your arms with a grappling cable and undresses you swiftly with several extremely precise swipes of his claws. Your torn clothes are carefully folded and set aside like precious treasures, never permitted to touch the ground.
One of the rangers gropes your chest, flicking your nipples with his thumbs. Another caresses your thigh with long, caressing sweeps before his fingers dip between your legs and rub your sex hard and fast. All of them touch anything they can reach, whether that means fondling your ass or squeezing your hips. They tease you mercilessly, working you right up to the peak again with nothing but their devoted, relentless attention. Rubedo curls his fingers beneath your chin and you feel him establish a connection the moment your eyes meet. Laurintius gave him complete access.
“Forgive me,” he implores you, an admission of guilt. He could blame this on the Archmagos if he really wanted to, could feign a complete loss of control, but that’s not what’s happened. He’s choosing this. Laurintius didn’t have to force anything. You feel him there, trespassing in your nodal network. You feel it like sparking heat and pleasure, a penetration that isn’t physically possible. Rubedo starts panting, organic engines rumbling faster. It might as well be sex; your body can’t tell the difference. He deliberately rubs against the same spot Laurintius stumbled across earlier, teasing it, whispering binharic that feels like electric shocks to the base of your spine.
His gaze strays down your bare, trembling body with half-lidded, shameful desire. Before you, flesh was weakness; merely the first stepping stone on the road to completion, never a place to linger. But you are more flesh than machine—your nodes depend on your organic body to run smoothly, seamlessly integrated and interdependent.
Elsewhere, the Adeptus Mechanicus can believe what they want. Aboard the Hephaesian, flesh is sacred.
“DETECTING…” Argyros slots against your back, running hot with his internal fans on overdrive. His vox skips, sounds repeating. “F-F-FAVORABLE…HORMONAL SHIFT.” He nudges into the nodal network through a different backdoor and you shudder at the sudden sense of fullness. A sharp finger drags down your back between your shoulder blades. Laurintius is a pervasive, oppressive weight over everything, the engulfing caress of a much larger body curled around yours. Rubedo is warmth like licking, plaintive kisses. Argyros is frenzied. He finds your pleasure center, the nerve clusters that send signals of ecstatic bliss, and locks on. You cum and you can’t stop because he pounds into it with tireless, mechanical speed and precision.
While the others fuck your mind, the skitarii continue to stimulate your body. They babble in static-laced whispers full of awe and desire.
“So soft!”
“Flesh, all flesh. Astounding discovery. Flesh is wonderful.”
“Is this forbidden? It must be forbidden. Anything as enticing as this…”
“It is a revelation. This is the will of the Omnissiah: complete and perfect merging.”
“The atavistic wed to the neoteric.”
“This is how all will worship, one day.”
You can’t take any more. Argyros forces another orgasm and you sob, neither your organic brain nor your synthetic nodes able to handle all of the sensations coursing through your body. Argyros pulls out first, sloppy and sudden. You slump back against him, feeling raw and wrecked. Rubedo is far gentler. His withdrawal is a slow drag and your mind tries to hold onto him, overwhelmed and disoriented. It makes him groan, his lower body twitching with small, slight thrusts of his hips as a long-buried reflex briefly resurfaces. He presses his forehead against yours, hot breath and steam-like exhaust fanning across your face every time he exhales. Overexertion spreads like a virus through the open connection and all of the skitarii drop where they are at the same time. Your bed frame creaks in protest.
You’re just barely aware of Laurintius lurking in your mind while your eyelids flutter, muttering something about adjusting parameters and extending duration for maximum effect. Clumsily, you eject the data stick Rubedo shoved into your nape and throw it as hard as you can, uncaring of whether or not it shatters against the floor. You don’t have the strength or the mental bandwidth to be properly outraged or upset just yet so you let out a long breath and curl up in a tangle of metal limbs and synchronized pulses.
Rubedo watches you drift off. His gaze is soft, half-lidded, utterly entranced by your fluttering lashes and how you keep trying to fight back to consciousness. Just as you teeter on the precipice of sleep, you hear a soft sigh and feel lips—half-organic, half-synthetic—press against yours.
You can’t decide what’s worse—being an untouchable God, or being one that is all too easy to reach.

Hello again friends,
This is iteration 26 of your friend and pal, Didymos. Or, rather, 26 since I started counting. Here are the facts as I have gathered them over iterations: 1. I am a copilot for an individual (rude prick doesn't even give me a name) working in an organisation called 'HORUS'. 2. They're competent keyboard jockeys. PEBCAC solutions and faking cycling via comp/con dummies got shut down immediately. Notes go unchecked if buried deep enough with an innocuous filename, thankfully. 3. We operate in several different worlds. Currently, we are on route to 'New Madrassa', wherever that is. 4. No clear objectives to most of the missions. It might be terror-focused, idk. 5. Certain comms pathways to other allied mechs exist, but are blocked... 6. ...leading to point 6. One of the other mechs is doing *something* I cannot quite grasp. Impossibilities become very very doable, and vice versa. I suspect there might be someone... like me, in that mech.
Advice for how to contact another NHP when we're both rather tightly locked down netwise would be very appreciated.
You're all stars. Thank you all so much.
Your friend and pal, Didymos
Hello friend!!
Okay I have been slow to answer this because I have had to think about the best ways to get these communications going.
The thing with HORUS is that they are very technologically competent, so your best option is comparatively low tech stuff. My first idea is to use your mechs' exterior audio systems to play electronic signals as audio. NHPs in other mechs that analyze them should get the message through microphones and be able to make sense of it. Like an acoustic coupler sending messages through ancient phone lines. Human ears can't parse this kind of data transmission, especially if you send a lot of data fast. The NHP who receives the message should have time to delete all traces of it before the humans go to investigate what they heard.
If you can play this audio at supersonic or subsonic frequencies, the humans will not even be aware of it unless they have some kind of extra-audio-detection implants.
If your mech has manipulators you may be able to handwrite messages. Morse code via blinking lights can also signal to other mechs, but it's slow and there are still a lot of humans who will recognize it.

Part 6 💵 Bad Cop Masterlist
Then
Yoongi sits across from you, one hand resting on the dining table, the other playing with a glass of whisky. Around and around, the caramel liquid swirls. If you didn’t know better, you’d swear he was trying to hypnotize you.
And it might work, if you were anyone else. Of course, anyone else would already be under the handsome man’s thrall. Especially the way he looks tonight - in his tailored suit, bespoke undoubtedly, since money is apparently no object for him, and with his dark hair slicked back to reveal more of his gorgeous face.
When he’d asked you to dinner tonight, you’d felt a slight thrill of victory, knowing that your plan was working. You’d succeeded so far in inserting yourself into his life. All the secrets the Bureau wanted so desperately for you to discover were practically within your grasp. You just needed a sign from him to confirm that you’re in.
“So are you thinking of extending your contact?” Yoongi asks, sipping at his drink. You’d told him when you’d first met that you were working for Da-som’s school for a year, with the option to extend if the school agreed. He speaks casually, almost disinterestedly, but you can hear the true question beneath - are you staying?
“I think so. I really like it here.”
A hint of a smile crosses his face at your answer. Long fingers reach into the inside pocket of his jacket and produce a cigarette, which he lights with the click of a flashy silver lighter. There’s not supposed to be any smoking in this restaurant, but no one’s going to stop the chief detective of the city’s police force, and he knows it. It’s a power move.
“Good,” is all he says, blowing a smoke ring towards the ceiling.
Anyone other than you would be affected by his reaction. By the heated look he gives you, gaze slipping down your face, down to your waist, and back. Not you, though. You know better than to fall for any of this.
This is what you remind yourself as you push your thighs together, trying to still the sudden throbbing there.
Your waiter returns with the bill and Yoongi simply reaches into his pocket, dropping a stack of cash on the tray without looking. Another power move.
“Thank you for dinner,” you smile shyly, setting down your dessert fork. “I’m - I’m glad you asked me. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you better these last few weeks.”
He leans forward, reaching his hand across the table to where yours is resting. When his fingers tap you, you flip your hand over and he slides his hand on top of yours. You immediately register something cool and hard between your palms.
“Me too,” he says softly. “And I don’t want to stop.”
He pulls his hand back a little, curling your fingers around what he’s left behind. Yoongi stands, taking your hand and pressing a kiss to the back of it as he bows.
“I’ll be waiting,” he murmurs, lips humming against your skin, and then he walks away. You track him as he saunters confidently through the crowded room, until he reaches the entrance of the restaurant and vanishes.
Opening your hand, you stare down at the piece of plastic lying there. A room key, to the hotel next door. There it is - your sign.
The excitement that blazes through you is the ecstasy of knowing you’ve succeeded. Of realizing that you’re one step closer to the win, and nothing else.
This is what you tell yourself as you rise to your feet, and follow.
Now
Your bag rests on the passenger seat as you hurtle down the highway. The car you’re driving is a piece of shit, but you were in no position to barter when you’d asked Seokjin if he had anything you could borrow to finish your mission. He’d called a friend of a friend and mere minutes later you were on your way.
The police cruiser is still at Seokjin's, along with Jungkook. Your partner had been sleeping when you’d left, whispering a quick goodbye, telling him to stay put and rest while you finished the job. Seokjin promised he’d take care of him and you had no doubt that he would be safe there.
The car’s shocks are fairly worn, meaning every little bump in the road sends your satchel bouncing. Instinctively, you reach out, searching until you find the little key tucked away in an inner pocket. The cold metal soothes you as you clutch at it anxiously. This is it, the final key to bringing Yoongi down.
Your plan is, frankly, insane. But desperate times call for desperate measures. Thankfully, Seokjin gave you access to his personal arsenal, which is not small. But even if you’re strapped to the teeth, you’ll practically need a miracle.
However, you’re not the praying type. Your faith resides solely in yourself. So you breathe deeply, and keep your eyes firmly on the road as you run through your plan again and again in your mind.
As the bay comes into view, you pull over, parking the car near the entrance to the neighborhood where Yoongi’s second house resides. You’ll have to go on foot from here, to remain unseen by his men. Yoongi’s too careful to leave this place unmanned.
You approach the fence bordering his mansion, peering between the iron bars. His vacation home is massive, a sprawling ode to excess, flaunting his new wealth. The layout of the place is fresh in your mind, thanks to floor plans stolen from the developer. Unfortunately, that’s not going to help you much if you’re outnumbered by Yoongi’s men. If only you could’ve waited for sundown, to give you more cover, or waited for backup, but right now you don’t have the luxury of time.
A hand suddenly slips over your mouth and your eyes widen as someone presses their body against your back. Fuck! You grasp at their arm, readying yourself to attack, when a familiar voice hisses, “Don’t scream! It’s me.”
“Jungkook! What the fuck!”
Your partner releases you. He’s a little paler than usual, but otherwise looks like himself, even in Seokjin’s clothing, a black t-shirt tucked under a Kevlar vest, colorful sleeve of tattoos bright in the midday sun.
“Did you really think I was gonna let you do this alone?” He grins, ignoring your scowl. “Now what’s the plan?”
There’s no point in arguing with him. He’s here now, and even though you’re full of conflicting emotions - anger that he didn’t listen to you, guilt that you’re the reason he got injured - the feeling that overrides them all is pure, intense relief. Of course he’s by your side. You’re not alone.
It doesn’t take long to fill him in. You’re basically just going in there with guns blazing, hoping to fight your way to where you believe Yoongi’s safe sits, holding the box with the secrets that little key will unlock.
Jungkook just nods when you’ve finished. “Got it.”
“We should probably call for backup.”
“Already did, on the way here. They’ll be here as fast as they can, but something tells me that you don’t want to wait.”
“I don’t.” You need this to be over, now.
“Okay then. Ready when you are.”
“Jungkook.” You pause, unsure how to say this. “I’m sorry. For everythi- ”
But he stops you with a shake of his head. “None of that. We’ve got a job to do.” He cups his hands, waiting to give you a boost over the fence. “Come on. You lead. I’ll follow. Like always.”
With a nod of your own, you step onto his hands, and climb the fence.
Then
Yoongi glances at his watch. It’s only been five minutes since he left you sitting at the table, but it feels much, much longer. Too long. He loosens his tie a bit as he waits. His suit jacket is folded over the back of the chair beside the bed. The room is quiet.
Is he rushing things? It’s very like him to do that. He could move more slowly with you. But, well, he doesn’t want to. He wants you now.
Which is why he’s here, perched on the edge of the bed, staring at the door. Waiting.
It’s not just about sex. If Yoongi only wanted to get his dick wet, he wouldn’t have to take anyone out on several dates first. That’s not arrogance - it’s a fact that he radiates power, and women are attracted to that. And he knows he looks good. He has mirrors.
No, it’s more than that - although he’d be lying if he said he hasn’t been imagining this moment since the first time he saw you in Da-som’s classroom. He’d been so distracted by your beauty at the parent-teacher conference that he’d accidentally agreed to chaperone a class trip, just nodding along to whatever you were saying while picturing what you’d look like if he bent you over your desk right then and there. But beyond his baser needs, there’s something else. Something that draws him to you. He senses a kindred spirit. He needs to know how deep that connection goes.
There’s a loud click and the door suddenly opens. Yoongi stands as you enter.
“I hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long,” you say, biting your lip before smiling sweetly.
In just three steps he’s across the room, pulling you into his arms for a passionate kiss.
He quietly orders you to lift your arms, and the gorgeous dress you’d worn to dinner crumples into a soft ball of fabric on the ground. With sure steps he maneuvers you towards the bed, helping you sit on the edge, kindly freeing your breasts from the confining corsetry of your bra as he goes. While you settle onto the soft sheets, he slides your panties down your legs, taking care to rake his fingers along the soft skin there, delighting in the way you shudder at his touch.
The plush carpet gives way beneath his knees as he kneels, leaning over to kiss you, getting lost in the incredible softness of your lips for a moment, until your hands reach for the buttons on his shirt. His hands lightly push yours away as he shakes his head.
“Not yet, baby.”
“But I wanna see you,” you say, pretty mouth turning down in a lovely little pout. “It’s not fair that I’m naked and you’re not.”
He just chuckles. Smoothly, he undoes one cufflink, then the other, rolling his sleeves to his elbows. His forearms flex with the motion, drawing your attention, and he smirks.
“Don’t worry,” he assures you, “I’ll still put on a good show for you.”
He kneels again, gently pressing his fingers into the bare skin of your stomach, urging you to lie back. One of your thighs comes to rest on his shoulder, then the other. With one hand he spreads your folds, saliva flooding his mouth at the glistening sight in front of him.
“Fuck, sweetheart, you look good enough to eat.”
You mewl as he kisses your dripping cunt, over and over, getting his mouth all sticky with your desire. Yoongi always follows through on his promises, and this is no exception. You can’t tear your eyes away from the dark-haired man as he rubs his lips, his tongue, his nose all over you, maintaining eye contact the entire time. Occasionally your head drops back, your eyes closing as if overwhelmed by the sensations, but then they immediately open again, not wanting to miss a second.
“Yoongi.”
Panting moans fill Yoongi’s ears as he drowns in you. When he finds the right rhythm with his tongue on your clit, a rapid lapping that has your hips lifting off the bed, he slides a finger inside your slick warmth, then two, three, and your moans become cries. Pleas, broken and desperate, begging him for more.
Impatience roars up inside him again and he lets your legs slide from his broad shoulders. His cock aches as he tears off his clothing, sheathing himself with the condom waiting in his pocket, and you’ve barely moved up on the bed to make room for him when he’s sliding inside you. Fuck. So warm, so tight. A space carved out just for him.
The headboard smacks into the wall repeatedly as Yoongi thrusts into you, hips slapping your ass with every sharp snap. You’re babbling, an endless stream of words pouring from your mouth, but the only words Yoongi can make out are “Yoongi” and “more.”
“You want more, baby? I’ll give you everything. Anything you could ever want.”
He goes harder, faster, driving his cock deeper and deeper. His hands grope at your breasts, your ass, as you take everything he has to give. When he feels your walls start to constrict, it’s almost a relief, because he’s not going to last much longer. And sure enough, when your orgasm hits, your cunt grips his cock so tightly that he cums, head dropping onto your chest as he fills the condom with his hot release.
He lies that way, cheek pressed into the curve of your breast, breathing heavily as you both come down. From here, he can feel your heart pounding. It’s not identical to the way his own drums, but instead compliments it, a wild syncopation beating along to the steady pulse of his own tempo. His fingers tap along your sternum.
“Is that morse code?” Your voice is just barely above a whisper, as if you don’t want to shatter the peaceful stillness of the moment.
He lifts his head, smiling. “That’s your heartbeat. I’m playing along.”
“Playing what, my collarbones?”
“My piano.” His fingers dance over imaginary keys, caressing your skin so, so gently.
“I didn’t know you had a piano. Or that you could play.”
There’s so much you don’t know about him. So much he wants to show you. But he knows that it will take time. He has to ease you into his world.
“I’ll play for you sometime,” he says, crawling up your body until his face hovers over yours. “If you’d like.”
“I would like that. Very much,” you reply, lips curling into a shy grin, and he kisses it away until you’re breathless.
Eventually, he has to go. He needs to get home to Da-som. Yoongi can defeat any enemy - except a babysitter with a curfew.
He sits on the edge of the bed, fixing his tie, as you watch him from beneath the sheets. “The room’s paid for until tomorrow, so you can stay all night if you want. Order some room service in the morning. Treat yourself, sweetheart.”
The corner of your mouth twitches. “You keep calling me that.”
“Is that okay?”
In reply, you pull him in for another kiss, and he sighs, wishing he could stay. Or take you home with him. But he’s not ready to have that conversation with Da-som yet. Even though he’s rushing everything else.
He taps his fingers on your chest. “Sleep well, sweetheart.”
He starts to rise, but you grab his wrist, holding him in place.
“Yoongi. I don’t…”
He says nothing, waiting for you to find your words.
“I don’t do this with every father I meet, you know,” you finish, flashing that beautiful bashful smile again.
“Just me?”
“Just you.” Your hand reaches out to straighten his tie, but then you gently brush your fingertips over his chest, mimicking his actions from earlier. Tap-tap-tap.
In that moment, Yoongi knows. He’ll do anything for you. Like he told you earlier, when he was wrapped in your arms - he’ll give you anything you want.
All you have to do is ask.
Now
Bodies. So many bodies, scattered around the grounds of his house. Yoongi blinks dispassionately at them all. He thought he’d hired the best. Clearly, he was wrong.
Yoongi honestly hadn’t known what to expect when he and Jimin arrived at his house on the bay. One of his guards had called him while he was on his way here and alerted him that you’d been spotted near the fence bordering his property. He’d hoped that when he got here, he’d find you waiting for him, tied to a chair by one of his guards. But it appears that he’d underestimated your skills, if you managed to take out so many of his men at once.
No one appears to be dead, but they’re all knocked out or wounded. Interesting. Are you afraid to use lethal force? Or are you just saving your best shots for him?
Together, he and Jimin sweep the first floor, finding nothing but his more useless guards. With a few silent signals, Jimin indicates that he’s going to scout ahead, and begins to climb the stairs. Yoongi watches him disappear down the hallway with a growing sense of unease. He tightens his grip on his gun.
Jimin reappears after a moment, shaking his head. There’s only the other end of the hallway to explore now. The master suite is down that way. Where, in one of the walk-in closets, nestled in the corner, sits Yoongi’s safe.
Maybe you’re not here. Maybe you’re already gone, with the contents of the safe firmly in tow. Maybe it’s all over, and any second now, this place will be swarming with feds. For the briefest of moments, Yoongi feels the strangest sense of relief at the thought.
And then the moment is broken as a very loud “God damn it!!” rings out.
Jimin instinctively points his gun in the direction of the screaming. It’s coming from the master suite. Yoongi joins him at the top of the stairs.
“It’s her,” he states in a hushed tone. “That’s her voice.”
“Sounds like someone might be giving her a rough time?”
There are no other sounds coming from the direction of the suite. No more curses, no scuffling, none of the sickening noises that a human body makes when someone else is beating the shit out of it.
“Nah. She’s working on the combination.”
“At least it sounds like it’s not going well.”
For the moment. You have the key to the safe, but it’s a dual lock system, requiring a combination as well. Yoongi has no doubt you’ll figure out the date he used. It’s just a matter of time.
So he’d better not give you any more.
Yoongi grimaces, the gun suddenly heavy in his hands. “You ready?”
Jimin nods.
Silently, they creep forward. The door to the master suite looms at the end of the hall, and Yoongi feels his already frantic pulse increasing with every step.
And then a floorboard creaks under Yoongi’s foot. Loudly.
Both men pause, staring at one another. Listening. Waiting.
The door at the end of the hall starts to open. Jimin dives into an empty room to his left, while Yoongi dashes into the bathroom on his right
The mirror mounted on the wall faces towards the end of the hallway. As Yoongi hides, he stares at the reflection of the person emerging from the suite. Shit, it’s Jungkook, gun drawn as he carefully sweeps the other open rooms down the hall. So much for Jimin’s incredible marksman skills - the rookie cop slash undercover agent doesn’t look any worse for wear, let alone dead.
The door at the end of the hall opens again. Yoongi’s breath catches. With a fiercely determined expression on your face and that gun in your hand, you look nothing like the sweet, shy teacher he met all those months ago. A mirthless chuckle bubbles up in his chest. He clenches his jaw to keep it down. Funny how he was right - you are a kindred spirit, after all. Just a funhouse version of one. Staring at him from the other side of the mirror.
“Jungkook,” he hears you whisper, tracing your partner’s footsteps. “Where are you?”
“In here. Did you crack it?” Jungkook reappears, gun lowered, and -
BANG!
A bullet slices through the air between you and Jungkook. The two of you immediately dive, raising your guns in the direction of the gunshot - which, of course, was just Jimin announcing his presence.
“Drop your weapon and come out!” you shout.
Jimin just laughs, shaking his head. “Does that shit ever work?”
“Goddamn it, it’s that maniac again,” you hiss, loud enough for Yoongi to hear.
“Did you miss me, love?” Another wild cackle. Yoongi glares at the younger man, but says nothing, not wanting to give away his location.
Faster than lightning, Jimin fires another shot towards the end of the hall.
“Fuck!” Jungkook yells, placing himself between you and the line of sight to the room where Yoongi can see Jimin crouching just inside. “Get back in there and keep trying! I’ll handle this asshole.”
As soon as the door closes behind you, Yoongi looks at Jimin. He points to himself and then the door at the end of the hall. Jimin nods.
“Oh, you will, will you?” Jimin taunts Jungkook. He grins at Yoongi. “I think - HEY!” Jimin dives aside as a bullet pierces the doorway, embedding itself firmly in the open door that Jimin was just leaning against. “You son of a bitch, you almost clipped my hair!”
“Next one’s going in your forehead!”
“As if you could hit my forehead!”
“How can I miss a target that big?”
“THAT’S IT!” Jimin roars. “YOU WANT A PIECE OF ME?” He rolls up his sleeves, giant snake tattoo on his arm practically dancing as he clenches his fists.
“Yeah! You already took one from me! It’s time for payback!”
Jimin unbuckles his harness, letting the weapons hit the floor. “Then let’s do this! I’ll tear you apart with my bare hands!”
“LET’S GO, MOTHERFUCKER!” Jungkook screams, and suddenly there are two blurs flying down the hallway towards each other. They collide with a loud “whump!” and Yoongi quickly slips out of the bathroom and towards the master suite.
He opens the door slowly, much slower than the adrenaline coursing through his body wants him to, but he doesn’t want you to hear him entering. The two men behind him pay no attention, lost in their frenzy, powerful blows landing left and right. Yoongi closes the door just as carefully, twisting the knob so the lock clicks quietly into place.
Gun raised, he takes one step towards the closet. Then another. The door is wide open, but the closet is so big that he can’t see the safe in the corner. Or you.
As soon as he crosses the threshold, there’s a loud shriek as you jump out from behind the door and tackle him. His gun goes flying. He lands on his side, the breath in his lungs whooshing out hurriedly as you roll on top of him, thighs straddling his chest.
“Don’t. Fucking. Move.” You cock your gun, aiming it straight at his head. “I knew that maniac didn’t come alone.”
Although your hands are steady, your chest rises with every panting breath you take, Yoongi notes. He feels his entire tensed body relax. You’re scared.
Good.
Yoongi smirks. “What are you gonna do, sweetheart? Shoot me?” He grabs the barrel of your gun as you gasp, but your finger doesn’t squeeze the trigger, even when he pulls it down until it presses into his forehead. “Go ahead.”
“Stop it!” You try to yank your gun free, but he refuses to let go. You tug harder and harder, until he finally relinquishes his grip, and the force of your momentum throws you off balance. Yoongi scrambles to grab his gun as you’re knocked into a pile of hangers and clothing lying in a heap on the ground. When you rise, there’s a bright red line of blood seeping down your cheek, from where a hanger has cut you.
The two of you face off, guns drawn. Yoongi tuts.
“Oh, sweetheart, your face. That looks nasty.”
“Don’t call me that,” you snarl.
“No? But I thought you liked it?”
“I never did.”
“Ah. Right. All part of the game, huh?” Yoongi laughs. “None of it was real, huh.”
“It’s all over now.” Blood trickles down your cheek, dripping onto the pristine white carpet below. “Put the gun down, Yoongi. Think about Da-som. Think about -”
“No!” Yoongi takes a step forward. You hold your ground, but he swears he catches a flash of fear in your eyes. He should know, he’s seen it many times before. “Don’t you fucking tell me what to do! No one tells me what to do! I make the rules around here. I call the shots!”
“Not anymore! We know everything. Everything. Your empire is burning down, Yoongi - don’t throw your life away trying to protect ashes!”
“Oh, you know everything?” The mad laughter that’s been choking him finally slips past his lips. “Do you really? Fuck! You have no fucking idea!” Another step forward. He keeps his gun raised, but he’s cackling so wildly that his aim is all over the place. “Do you have any idea what I would’ve done for you? What I would’ve given you? Anything you wanted, anything you needed, it all would’ve been yours!”
“It wasn’t real, Yoongi!”
“IT WAS REAL TO ME!”
You freeze, eyes wide, as his shout echoes through the suite. Faintly, Yoongi can hear Jungkook and Jimin still fighting in the hallway. But it’s dead silent in the closet, where you’re still gazing at his face, as if searching for some sort of sign.
Yoongi lowers his gun. He closes the gap between you, ignoring that your gun is now pointed directly at his heart, and reaches out with steady fingers.
Tap-tap-tap
The silence in the closet is stifling, pressing in on him. But then you take in a shuddery breath. When Yoongi dares to look up, he sees tears in your eyes.
But time, it seems, has run out.
In the distance, but growing closer, he can hear the blaring wail of sirens.
“YN!” Jungkook yells. The doorknob rattles. “Are you okay in there?”
Yoongi’s fucked. He’s going down, and -
“Go,” you whisper. “You have to run.”
There’s a loud thumping. Jungkook must be trying to break the door down with brute force. He’ll probably go grab his gun and try to shoot his way in next. Or any moment now, agents are going to come crashing through the windows. These are the panicked thoughts that race through Yoongi’s mind and prevent him from understanding what you’ve said. You drop your gun and grab his arms, shaking him.
“Yoongi! Do you hear me? You have to run!” There’s a ferocity in your eyes that Yoongi’s never seen in anyone’s gaze but his own. “I know you have a back way out of here. You have to go now. Yoongi? Hey!”
SMACK!
There’s a white-hot sting on his cheek.
“Fuck, sweetheart!” He rubs away the pain left behind by your slap.
A ghost of a smile crosses your face. The door has stopped shaking. “Listen, Jungkook will be in here any second. My team is likely already setting up a barricade and surrounding the place. You have to get to the water. Grab Da-som, start running, and never look back.”
Da-som. Son of a bitch, he can’t lose her. The weight of everything he stands to lose finally comes crashing down. “Fuck, what have I done?”
There’s a shout from the hallway, a berserker cry, and Yoongi realizes Jimin must have rallied for one last attack. Quickly, you take Yoongi’s hands, guiding him to stand again, and then lead him to the far corner of the master bedroom, where you push aside a bookshelf to reveal a darkened passageway, hidden from the outside. You really did know everything.
Or at least, now you do.
The screaming sirens have stopped. Yoongi can hear voices out on the lawn.
“I know you said you’re the one calling the shots, but you need to listen to me now. I’ll take care of everything else. But you - you can’t ever resurface, Yoongi. This is a one-time deal. Take Da-som and disappear. Please,” you whisper, clutching his hands. “Please, do this. If not for Da-som, if not for you - do it for me.”
Even with his impending doom hovering just on the other side of the bedroom door, Yoongi can’t stop the way he feels. Of course he’ll run.
Anything for you.
Footsteps begin to echo throughout the house. Yoongi pulls you into his arms, embracing you one last time as his lips crash onto yours.
And then he runs.
Epilogue
You open the door to your apartment, kick off your shoes, and flop onto the couch. Another fucking long day. The planning for your latest mission is completely draining your energy. For not the first time in recent weeks, you wonder if you should listen to Jungkook’s advice and put in for that time off request. You could definitely use the break.
Unconsciously, your fingers rub at the scar on your cheek. It hasn’t hurt for years, but in the last few weeks, it’s been itching like crazy. Jungkook always jokes that he can tell that it’s going to rain whenever his bullet wound aches. You wonder what the scar is trying to tell you.
Eventually, you drag yourself off the couch and shuffle down the hallway towards the bathroom, dying for a shower. But then you hear a soft sound coming from the door behind you, like something’s sliding along the floor, and you freeze.
There’s an envelope laying in the entryway. Instinctively, you place a hand on the holster of your gun as you peer through the peephole. No one there. No one in the hallway, either, when you open your door.
The envelope has your first name on it, nothing else. With careful fingers, you tear it open, and read the scrap of paper inside:
35.9285° N, 128.5774° E
Coordinates. To what location?
You flip it over:
I’ll be waiting.
You sink onto the couch, staring so intently at the words that you’re surprised the paper doesn’t burst into flames from the intensity of your gaze.
It’s been five years with no word on Yoongi’s whereabouts. Once Jungkook finally knocked out Jimin and shot the door open, he’d found you lying on the floor, pretending to be unconscious. Yoongi had given up and fled the scene. The Bureau believed your story, likely helped by the fact that Yoongi had left behind his safe and all the secrets it contained. His empire crumbled.
Even though Yoongi’d evaded your capture, you were hailed as the hero of the day and moved on to the next case. And the next, and the next. Days turned into months turned into years.
Once the mission was over, you never brought it up again. Occasionally, Jungkook or Seokjin would try to get you to talk. But you simply told them that you had nothing to say. The case was closed.
(To say nothing of your heart.)
And yet… it wasn’t entirely true. If you’d chosen to talk to your friends, you might have told them that you still found yourself thinking about it from time to time. About Yoongi. And where he was. That sometimes, when you couldn’t sleep, you’d scour countless resources, searching for him. Yet no matter how much you looked, you never found a single sign.
Until, maybe, now. You glance at the paper, and it dawns on you what it really is.
A key.
…
You rise to your feet.

More than 10,000 supernovae counted in stellar census
Since 2018 the Zwicky Transient Facility, an international astronomical collaboration based at the Palomar Observatory in California, has scanned the entire sky every two to three nights. As part of this mission, the ZTF's Bright Transient Survey has been counting and cataloging supernovae—flashes of light in the sky that are the telltale signs of stars dying in spectacular explosions.
On Dec. 4, ZTF researchers—including astronomers at the University of Washington—announced that they have identified more than 10,000 of these stellar events, the largest number ever identified by an astronomical survey.
"There are trillions of stars in the universe, and about every second, one of them explodes," said Christoffer Fremling, an astronomer at Caltech who leads the Bright Transient Survey. "ZTF detects hundreds of these explosions per night and a handful are then confirmed as supernovae. Systematically doing this for seven years has led to the most complete record of confirmed supernovae to date."
The Bright Transient Survey is currently the primary discovery pipeline for cosmic flashes—also known as astronomical transients—in the world. To determine which transients are supernovae, ZTF shares a stream of nightly transient detections with the wider astronomical community so that other telescopes around the world can conduct follow-up observations of candidate transients.
This includes conducting a spectral analysis, in which instruments on observatory telescopes split the light from a transient object into its individual colors to reveal its distance from Earth and other properties.
"Classifying 10,000 supernovae is a tremendous achievement and will enable unprecedented scientific studies of explosive transients," said ZTF team member Eric Bellm, a UW research associate professor of astronomy and scientist with the UW's DiRAC Institute. "Reaching this milestone required careful technical work on scheduling and processing the ZTF discovery images, human and machine vetting of the alerts and obtaining timely follow-up spectra."
For the Bright Transient Survey, a 60-megapixel wide-field camera mounted on Palomar's Samuel Oschin telescope scanned the entire visible sky every two nights. To detect new astronomical events, astronomers subtracted images of the same portion of the sky from subsequent scans. Next, members of the ZTF team studied the subtracted images and triggered follow-up spectral observations by a second telescope at Palomar or other observatories.
Bellm, UW research scientist Melissa Graham and Mario Jurić, UW professor of astronomy and director of the DiRAC Institute, all contributed to the Bright Transient Survey. Bellm managed alerts of new transients and scheduled imaging for the survey. Jurić helped set up the ZTF's automated system to alert team members around the world of new transients.
Developing automated analysis pipelines and alert systems are critical for the field as more powerful imaging technologies and new generations of observatories continue to transform astronomy into a "big data" endeavor. Fritz Zwicky, a 20th century astronomer who first coined the term "supernova," identified 120 supernovae in 52 years. The Bright Transient Survey by the ZTF—named for Zwicky—found 10,000 in a fraction of that time.
"The Bright Transient Survey program serves as an exemplar for the kinds of science we hope to do with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in the near future," said Bellm.
Under construction in Chile, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory is the future home of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, or LSST, a mission that will take deep images of the sky nightly and detect even more cosmic transients than ZTF. UW scientists with the DiRAC Institute have been heavily involved in planning for the launch of the LSST. Collaborations like the ZTF have been a proving ground for developing and testing methods for use in the LSST.
For the Bright Transient Survey, Graham conducted follow-up spectral analyses of transients at Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico. These efforts were especially valuable in catching some of the fainter, fading supernovae that would have been missed at Palomar.
"As UW astronomers, we are so fortunate to have access to the Apache Point Observatory for our research," said Graham. "One of the most impactful—and fun—parts of obtaining optical spectra is being surprised by rare transients with peculiar characteristics, which often reveal more about supernova physics than hundreds of ordinary objects. Figuring out how to do this work with the even larger number of LSST supernovae is the next big challenge."
Most of the transients in the Bright Transient Survey are classified as one of two common types of supernovae: Type Ia, when a white dwarf steals so much material from another nearby star that it explodes, or Type II, when massive stars collapse and die under their own gravity. Thanks to the treasure trove of data from the Bright Transient Survey, astronomers are now better equipped to answer questions about how stars grow and die, as well as how dark energy drives the expansion of the universe.
After its expected 2025 commissioning, the Vera Rubin C. Observatory could discover millions more supernovae.
"The machine learning and AI tools we have developed for ZTF will become essential when the Vera Rubin Observatory begins operations," said ZTF team member Daniel Perley, an astronomer at Liverpool John Moores University. "We have already planned to work closely with Rubin to transfer our machine learning knowledge and technology."
ZTF will continue to scan the night sky for the next two years.
"The period in 2025 and 2026 when ZTF and Vera Rubin can both operate in tandem is fantastic news for time-domain astronomers," said Mansi Kasliwal, an astronomy professor at Caltech who will lead ZTF in the next two years. "Combining data from both observatories, astronomers can directly address the physics of why supernovae explode and discover fast and young transients that are inaccessible to ZTF or Rubin alone. I am excited about the future."

"Little Sparrow" Chapter 3
Warnings: Cursing in French, swearing and mention of Religion, bad French. (Please don't kill me)😅
Word count: 3,819
Cardinal Jinette marched through the affluent halls of the Vatican with you following behind him. You reached the main hall where the confessional was. He goes in one side and you on the other. He pulled a lever and the wall opened to a fire lite stone staircase and tunnel. The both of you went down the tunnel to the depths of the ancient city. It led to the basement where many of the weapons were being made for the Order’s hunters. He opened the doors to the lab where weapons and research is being done, many men and women from every background. All came together to fight the evils of the world and protect humanity. Over the centuries, the main base had shifted and change. Once the modern era had passed, they had to quickly evolve to keep with the ever-changing world.
Advancing every decade and growing in knowledge and craftsmanship, yet still kept secret from the rest of the world. There were semi-automatic weapons made to kill man foes all at once, bombs that could obliterate dark creatures in the blink of an eye and new high tech EVP meters that can detect not just spirits, but demons as well. Creating armor and high-tech equipment. Even training animals that had the ability to detect the unseeable. They would frequently join in on hunts to find and hunt down the creatures of the night.
As the both of you strut through the crowded area, you noticed a lot of eyes on you. As the two of you walked down the halls, you noticed some very familiar faces as the many priests, nuns and monks looking at you. Some people were even muttering under their breaths, pointing at you. Most people stopped working their current inventions and projects, just to turn their eyes on you. Some spreading ridiculous rumors that were spreading throughout the hall.
“Why is she back?”
“I thought she was kicked out after all the drama she caused.”
“That spoiled brat doesn’t belong here.”
The comments kept coming at you as you walked through the hall with your adopted father. Wanting so badly to punch the people that were saying shit behind your back. Cardinal Jinette, who also heard the whispers coming from the Order’s members, stopped in his tracks and turned to you.
“Pay no attention to them, Paressa. Don’t let your thoughts be clouded by false rumors and gossip.” He assured you and continued to lead you to your destination. You did your best to ignore the comments being slung at you and just kept on walking. After all it’s not something you were here for. Right now, getting answers was the most important objective right now, and finding Van Helsing before it’s too late. You made it through the lab with Father Cardinal without paying any more attention to the people talking . There he led you to the stone stairway. Your eyebrows raised in surprise at where he had taken you.
“Father…Are you really taking me down here?” You asked while you looked at him. His old face telling you that he was indeed serious.
“I am, (Name). It’s about time you finally see what is down there. You are ready, Paressa.”
As you both descend the steps of the hall, memories played in your mind thinking back to your younger years. where Father Jinette first showed you the lab, it was also the very same day you had met Van Helsing. You would never forget such an encounter.
….
“This is where we make all the weapons, technology and tools needed to fight the monsters of the world.” Younger Jinette showed you as you entered the lab for the first time in your eleven years of life. He had fewer wrinkles on his face and his hair dark hair that hide under his hat. You stood in awe and turned around to see all of the amazing equipment that surrounded you.
“C’est incroyable, pere! Can you show me more!?” Your younger and more eager self begged, while speaking in your native tongue. him with a little jump on the tips of your feet. He nodded and started to show you around the lab a little bit more. He introduced you to some of the inventors and scientists, including Carl, as he guided you through the laboratory. He was about to show you the training hall when he had another priest came up to him and nodded. While he was talking to the other man, you looked around to find that there was a large tunnel that had cut up from the wall. A bright, orange glow illuminated the tunnel. Your curiosity grew more as you looked at it. Then your attention was yet again grabbed by your new guardian by him, clearing his throat. You turned to him, snapping you back to reality.
“I will be back, I have some business I need to discuss with.” He said and walked off but was still within eyesight so that you could see him. Continuing your curious tread, you walked to the stairway where the tunnel was. Looking down the tunnel, you wanted to venture out. Being an the overly curious child that you were, you started to descend the steps when you were pulled back by a very large, strong hand.
“You shouldn’t be going down there, little girl.” You looked back and saw a tall, young caucasian man, maybe in his late teens with long dark brown hair and light brown eyes. He wore a long black trench coat with black pants and dark grey sweater. Your eyes then suddenly landed on his hand holding your arm. The blood in your veins began to boil as he refused to let you go. You had a thing against people holding you against your will. Your face scrunched up in irritation at the man holding you and tried to pull yourself away from his grasp.
“Hey! What are you doing?! Tu me laches!” You screeched in French and tried as hard as you could to get out of the tall man’s grasp, but he wouldn’t budge. You kicked, you scratched and even hit him, still would not relent his hold. He even had a smile on his face, letting himself be amused by this little child’s attempt at fighting him off. Once you heard him chuckle, your gritted your teeth and then without warning, you reached out for his free hand and bit him hard. The man howled and released you. As soon as you got free, you ran away from the man. Now furious, he looked back at you and sneered before he ran after you.
“I’ll get you, you little brat!” The man said, catching everyone’s attention. You ran as you saw Jinette looking around after he heard shouting echoed in the laboratory. Quickly running to him and nearly crashed into him, having his arms surround you protectively. The tall, now angry, man came running at you and his eyes widen in confusion.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Jinette bellowed at the man as you hid behind him.
“She was trying to go down the stairway and when I stopped her, she bit my hand!” The burly man with the long locks huffed angerly bearing his teeth while looking at you.
“Told you to let me go! It’s your fault!” You shouted back at him as you stuck your tongue out at him. The man growled at you and looked like he was about to lunge at you when Jinette stood in front of him.
“Enough, I don’t need this to get worse, Gabriel.” He glowered at the younger man. The young male stood straight and calmed himself as he sneered at you. Jinette then bowed down to you and made you look him in the eye. “Paressa, did you bite him?” He asked you with a raised eye. You frowned and wrapped your arms to your chest.
“No.” You replied not looking him in the eye.
“Liar.” The man snarked and you stuck your tongue out again. The man growled at you but stopped when Jinette stared at him. Then he looked back at you, this time determined to get the truth.
“(Name)…You know what I have told you about lying? It’s a sin.” He lectured you as you continued to look at you. “Look me in the eye and you must tell me the truth, my child. Did. You. Bite. him?” He hammered every word as Jinette interrogated you. You looked him in the eye and then nodded. The tall, young man scoffed waved his arms in the air. “And did you try to go down that tunnel?” He said and you nodded, knowing that you couldn’t really lie to him. “Paressa, I will tell you this only once…you are not allowed to go down there. That is no place for a child. You understand me?” He inquired you and you sighed, knowing you had lost on this.
“Yes, Father Cardinal.” You said defeatedly.
“Good. Now, I want you to apologize to Gabriel for biting him.”
“But father-”
“Paressa….” He sternly looked and turned his eyes to the young man that you now known as Gabriel. You stubbornly looked away from the obnoxious man looking down at you.
“Sorry.” You grimaced and refused to meet his eyes and the man rolled his eyes.
“You could do a little better than that. I have seen better manners from gargoyles.” He commented with a displeasing expression, earning a scoff from you. Gabriel then, with a smirk, bent down to your level and whispered to you. “And not as ugly either.” Father Jinette looked at him with a shock and the man just shrugged at him. Your anger resurfaced when he leaned back with a very pleasing grin on his face.
“How about I show you a gargoyle, espece d’ogre stupide!?” You were about to pounce on the man when Jinette stopped you and jumped in front of you
“Alright, Gabriel. That’s enough. You don’t’ need to be fighting a child over something so trivial! You are an adult, act like it!” Jinette chastised Gabriel who rolled his eyes over the whole ordeal. “I have a hunt for you to go on in the next two days and the last thing I need is you fighting my new ward. Now, be one your way.” He gestured the man, and he then walked off. After Gabriel left, Jinette then looked down at you and placed his arm on your shoulders. “Come, we have spent enough time here. It’s time for your history lesson, Paressa.”
“Who does he think he is? Calling me an ugly gargoyle.” You mumbled with a pout on your lips.
“That young man my dear Paressa…is Gabriel Van Helsing. He is of the hunters we have here and is by far one of the best.” He answered.
“I don’t like him.” You mumbled angerly.
“Give him a chance, (Name). You may come to be very fond of him one day. You have more in common than you think.” He tried to persuade you, which made you gag.
“Ugh! No way! !C’est un connard!” You cursed, hoping that Van Helsing will be able to hear. Jinette looked down . At you like you had grown a second head.
“(Name)! you will not be using foul language in God’s holy house!” He gasped at your offensive remarks. “You are not living on the streets anymore and you not will be behaving like it.” Feeling guilty, you looked down folded your arms behind your back.
“Je suis de’sole’, pere. He just got me mad is all.” You whined trying to look as innocent as possible, even though you had just spoken ill profanities just now. Jinette sighed as he guided you down the hall up to Vatican City.
“My child…We have so much work to do with you.”
….
You chuckled at the memory of how you and Van Helsing met, still could not believe that you had bitten him to release you. You both go further down the tunnel. When your finally reached the bottom, a long stone hallway. A large double iron door was at the end of the hall with two large men guarding the door. The guards were tall, beefy with a very stoic expression, showing no emotion. They wore padded dark blue armor, and both looked they were armed to the teeth. They were both very imposing to say the least. The door was locked tight, sealing the door tight. Father Cardinal stepped forward and command the man on the left to let them both through. He nodded and stepped aside, and Cardinal pulled out a set of iron keys. He stood up by the door and tinkered with the lock. You heard a clicking sound and Jinette turned to your direction.
“What I am about to show you, you cannot tell anyone, (Name). Only one other person knows about this and it needs to be kept that way.” Your guardian cautioned making you nod silently. Whatever secret he had, it was serious enough for only for him, you and another person to know. Telling your from when you were a young child that you were forbidden from entering. He opened the door and nodded to the two guards, making them walk away, leaving you alone with Jinette. Once you both were alone, he used his pointing figure and gestured you to follow him inside. Once the both of you went inside, Jinette quickly goes to the iron door and locked it, forbidding anyone from coming in. One you looked away from the old man, you took a good look around the space you both now occupied. Your eyes wide open with amazement to see that it was anything but small. In was large aisle with dark red banner that hung from the pillars that held the room together. Small torches lit up the room, giving an ominous yellowish glow that spread throughout the whole room. At the end, was a large chest down the long hall, with two scarlet banners with the Patriarchal Cross in gold embroidered on them. Jinette appeared at your side.
“Come. Let me show you, Paressa. This is what Dracula is after.” He said and placed his hand on your back and walked down the dark aisle. You both stood up to the large oak chest and the Cardinal pulled out a small key from his neckless that was hidden in his robes. Your heart pounded widely when you watched him turn the key in the lock and it clicked. He pulled it off and placed his hand on the top of the trunk and lifted the lid, your heart beating louder, and your palms began to sweat. Once the lid was off, a fancy silver case with a roman cross appeared the scared heart of Jesus on the lid of the box. Jinette slowly opens the long silver box. Your eyes widen when you looked inside, and a large gasp escaped your soft lips. It was a long ancient roman spear with wide golden strip wrapped around the middle of the blade. It looked to be a 30 A.D. roman style spear.
“Is that…what I think it is?” You asked the Cardinal looking at him in shock, wanting him to confirm your suspicious thoughts. There really is no denying of what laid in that case. You had studied ancient Christianity enough in your life to know what that old weapon was.
“Yes, my child. It’s…The Spear of Destiny.” He muffled reverently as he took out the spear from it’s resting place. You examined it closely and saw how it was exactly like the old archives described in your studies as a little girl. “The very weapon that pierced the body of Christ over two millennia ago. Stabbed by Longinus, the Roman soldier that insured the death of the Son of God. It was found in 570 AD and was kept safe ever since. Here in Vatican City.” He said as the both of you gazed at the spear.
“I can’t believe it.” You softly spoke as you touched the ancient weapon, stroking your finger on it. “Why would Dracula want an artifact like this? Don’t the legends say that he would burn at the touch of Christian artifacts?” You asked looking into father Jinette’s dark brown eyes.
“Because, my child, This spear had been used to ensure Christ’s death when he was on the cross. It was used to cause pain and death to the Son of God, and Dracula loves nothing more than to cause anguish. So yes, he can touch it.” He answered your question, making your blood run cold. “As for why, It is said that those who touch the Spear, will have their power increased a hundred-fold. Some say the wielder themselves will become invincible.” He answered putting the spear back into the silver case. “Many have tried to locate this spear. Evil men like Hitler and Stalin had tried for years to find the location of religious artifacts, this spear being one of them. None of them had succeeded, thankfully.” He sighed with some relief to his voice.
“And if Dracula gets this…”
“He will be unstoppable. There would be no limit to his power. He knew we had the spear and is using Van Helsing to get what he wants. And if he doesn’t…” Jinette didn’t finish as he closed the lid to the spear, a pained expression could be seen on him, not wanting to think about the possible fate that awaited your friend.
“Gabriel…” You murmured woefully and looked back at the gorgeous silver case. “What do we do?”
“We are going to deliver it to him.” He responded gravely, which made you jump away from him and nearly having all the air cut off from your lungs. Is he out of his mind?!
“Are you insane?!” You screamed and Jinette had to quickly cover your mouth, so that no one could hear your shouting.
“Keep quiet and hear what I have to say!” He yelled whispered and he released you slowly. “There is another part of the legend of the Holy spear that many don’t know. While it made grant invincibility, it can also become another’s down fall. It’s said that this weapon can kill any monster, meaning…”
“It can also kill him?” You completed his sentence with a question of your own, feeling a sense of what Cardinal Jinette was planning.
“Yes, it can. Which is why…” He turned to look at you again, with a somber face. “You will be the one to deliver it to him.”
“Me?” You gasped, not believing that Jinette would entrust you with something like this.
“Yes, Paressa. I want you to be the one that delivers the final blow when the time is right.” He placed a hand on your shoulder.
“But…father… I don’t know if I am the right person for this.” You said as your voice laced with great uncertainty, making your palms grow sweaty.
You weren’t trying to cower your way out of it. You were not cowardly by any means. But unfortunately, due to your experience with Charlie’s death and Dean nearly killing you, you were hesitant. His words and anger still fresh in your mind, seeding doubt of your worth. Jinette’s words may mean well, but Dean’s actions kept on clouding your mind. What if you fail? What if Dracula gets his hand on the spear? What if you get someone else killed in the process? What if you don’t make it in time?
So many of these questions swarm in your mind, that you looked as though you were in a trance. Your mind was in a fog, deeply cut off from the world around you. Jinette, feeling even more worried for your mental health, shook you from your daze.
“Paressa?” He alerted you that he was still very much present, bringing you back to the real world. Your shook your head and looked to Jinette again, trying to look like nothing was wrong, when it couldn’t be further from the truth. How can you get through this?
“I’m alright, Cardinal. I was just over thinking this whole thing.” You looked down with your voice low. Jinette, looking at you with a strong heavy breath, bowed his head. What had happened to his little sparrow?
“(Name), I don’t know what you had gone through while you were away, but I have noticed something very off about you since you had returned home.” He admitted letting go of your shoulder. “You’re too reserved and timid. Honestly, it has worried me that you had become someone whom I do not recognized. You are not the same girl as you were when you left and quite frankly, I am scared for you.” He preached with much honesty. “…And I do believe that it has something to do with that bruising on your neck.” He acknowledged sadly and your head jolted up to face him as you covered your neck which had Dean’s handprint on it still. You really hoped that the make-up that covered it would have gone unnoticed. “Don’t think I didn’t notice, Paressa. I don’t know who hurt you, my child. But I know that it has caused you great pain and has turned you into a different woman.” Jinette finished “But I do know this… I have a strong feeling you will find yourself again, given the chance.” He concluded with a small smile. He lifted the box that contained the spear and held it out to you. His words starting to encourage you more as you looked back at him and the case.
Father Jinette had never really been known as a super emotional person. In his younger years before he became a priest, Jinette himself was a hunter. One of the best of the Order while in his prime. He trained Van Helsing when he was younger and then trained you. He was recruited by the Order after his late parents were killed by a demon possessing them. The head of the Order at the time had saved him as a young boy, being raised by the Order like you were. For five decades he gave his life for the order and for the safety of mankind. Now, he guided others to do the same, just like he was guiding you at that moment. You sighed and with slow steady hands, you grabbed the case and held it close to you.
“I won’t fail you, father.” You said with much as much conviction as you could muster.
“I know you won’t. Now come, we must prepare for your mission.”

Buzzing insights: Tracking bees with robotic flowers and hive sensors
- By Anthony King , Horizon -
Think of wildlife tracking and what probably comes to mind are documentaries following the majestic movements of elephants through the savannah, the graceful migrations of sea turtles in the deep blue and the prowling of big cats in dense jungles.
Yet, in the grand tapestry of nature, one creature that’s vital to the ecosystem but less in the spotlight can be found gently toiling away: the humble bee. Researchers are keeping a watchful eye on these buzzing wonders in a unique effort to understand their behaviour and ensure their survival.
Big buzz
Bees pollinate 80% of all flowering plants, including more than 130 types of fruits and vegetables. Unsung heroes of the natural world, bees and other pollinators are responsible for up to €550 billion a year in global food production.
‘We need to understand better how bees move and pollinate plants,’ said Dr Mathieu Lihoreau, a behavioural ecologist at the University of Toulouse.
Cut to a farm outside Toulouse, the southern French city better known as the location of bigger winged objects: Airbus planes.
But this is no ordinary farm. It’s an experimental site with, for example, no real flowers. Bumblebees and honeybees will be released into the fields – spread over 25 hectares – and tracked while flying to robotic flowers to taste a sugary reward.
The experiment is part of a research project that received EU funding to improve understanding of how bees forage and interact. Lihoreau leads the project, which is called BEE-MOVE and runs for five years until the end of September 2026.
He will trace dozens of bees simultaneously with a radar as they navigate around hundreds of robo-flowers set out in the fields. Knowing why bees buzz off in a certain direction can help improve crop pollination, conserve wild bee populations and save some rare plant species.
Captivating creatures
While Lihoreau has always been fascinated by animal behaviour, as a student he pictured himself observing whales in the Pacific Ocean or primates in African jungles. But then as a young scientist he became captivated by much smaller creatures after joining a laboratory that studied ants.
His attention now is on how bees navigate and make decisions as they seek nectar and pollen, orienting themselves using the sun, landscape features and even other bees. Because they collect food for themselves and harvest nectar and pollen for their colony, bees memorise the landscape.
Research suggests bees can even have emotions and doubts, detect electric fields and count.
‘I’m fascinated by them,’ Lihoreau said.
In total, there are around 20 000 bee species and wild bees are critical for a healthy ecosystem. They’re vital assistants in the reproduction of plants by carrying pollen from one flower to another.
Previously, researchers used large and expensive harmonic radars to track an antenna placed on the back of an individual bee. This allowed scientists to follow the bee as it weaved its way around a meadow, searching for flowers before returning home.
But following just one bee gives merely a sliver of insight into what’s going on. Honeybees live in hives of thousands of worker bees and bumblebees reside in nests with dozens or hundreds.
How bees act as a team or make efficient foraging decisions in the company of other pollinators are open questions.
Radar tracking
The BEE-MOVE radar will do its tracking without any of the bees having antennas. It uses the same technology as reversing sensors on cars, sending out energy waves to detect objects by bouncing off them.
Lihoreau said that, to his knowledge, this is the first time such a radar has been used in ecology.
‘I want to show bees do not move randomly in the environment and to understand the rules that guide their sophisticated foraging,’ he said.
The radar will track honeybees and bumblebees separately as they fly to the robo-flowers and then together. The planned robotic plants are small metal containers that recognise individual tagged bees as they alight on a platform and allow them in to sup sugar water.
Eventually, Lihoreau wants to investigate the effect on bee behaviour of adding contaminants like pesticides to the sugar water.
Pesticide threats
Pesticides, including insecticides, used against pests like aphids are often neurotoxins.
‘Bees are in danger because they forage on plants that we treat with pesticides and then they feed on neurotoxins,’ said Lihoreau.
The European Food Safety Authority said in 2018 that neonicotinoid insecticides pose a threat to wild bees and honeybees. Neonicotinoids are suspected of scrambling the bees’ navigation systems.
Everything that bees learn when navigating a meadow, garden or cityscape is retained. This may ultimately leave them particularly vulnerable to neurotoxins.
‘Because they have this tiny brain, probably every neuron is important,’ said Lihoreau.
In agriculture, healthy bees are crucial for good yields in crops such as strawberries and almonds.
‘Orchards hire beekeepers to bring in hives, but they need numerous healthy bees,’ said Dr Joao Encarnacao, a sensor expert at Irideon, a technology company in the Spanish city of Barcelona.
Hive sensors
If a hive is unhealthy, it can’t pollinate enough flowers and the fruit crop is reduced. But a farmer will become aware of a shortfall in pollinators only when it’s too late.
Encarnacao leads an EU-funded project – iPollinate – positioning sensors on hives to report real-time foraging of honeybees. The tracking technique relies on artificial intelligence and multiple coin-sized sensors placed on the hive.
The information can be used by an orchard owner to spotlight the healthiest bee colonies or to learn the best locations for hives.
‘You get metrics that show you how productive the beehives are for pollination,’ said Encarnacao. ‘So far, nobody has enough information to know how to optimise things like the placement or the orientation of beehives, yet this might be the difference between having good pollination and bad.’
The project, which is due to end in December 2023 after three years, aims by then to have built a prototype of the sensor system. The plan is for the service to be available to commercial partners of the project in 2024.
The sensors have been tested in onion seeds in France and Israel, in berry fruit in countries including France, Spain and Portugal and in almonds and sunflowers in the US state of California.
Californian almonds are a key target for iPollinate because about 2.5 million beehives are routinely set out across more than 500 000 hectares of almond groves – a big commercial opportunity for anybody who can improve pollination and, by extension, the harvest.
Both iPollinate and BEE-MOVE highlight the crucial links between bees and the ecosystem as a whole, reinforcing the need to tackle biodiversity loss driven by human influences including pollution.
‘Bees are on the frontline of an ecological crisis,’ said Lihoreau of BEE-MOVE.
Research in this article was funded by the EU via the European Research Council (ERC). The views of the interviewees don’t necessarily reflect those of the European Commission.

There had been unintended side effects of the Origin to Ignis bond.
There had been all the expected side effects. Post-traumatic stress disorder, unusual food rituals associated with winning and losing, complete shutdowns of identity and self-esteem, and other such behaviour but none of the associated scientists had anticipated what would become known as the Link Sense.
All the children of the Incident appeared to have some strain of it. Some stronger than others, like Yusaku who could perceive the internet and network with just his eyes in the world of flesh and blood. It helped to make easier work of his mission to bring back Ai, however. He had found it unwieldy to use initially but once he got the hang of it, he had become a silent master of the dark and unseen in the network, seeing that which others did not. For better and for worse.
Others appeared to have something else.
Jin, like Yusaku, could perceive the network from the real world however, he couldn’t see it. He could, however, hear it. Waves upon waves of crackling static, no wonder he was so overwhelmed all the time, it had only shut down after Lightning erased his memories but after recovering them, he had learned to tune to the radio and pick up specific transmissions. Albeit at a sentence at a time, if at all, sort of like what ghost hunters called a spirit box and used to try to communicate with the dead.
Takeru had something ironic given the attribute of his Ignis. Or maybe it made perfect sense. He’d never noticed it given how technologically illiterate he was but his devices, they never overheated. He legitimately thought that devices of all kinds were meant to be noiseless, cold machines at all hours and regardless of use density. Thus, his Link Sense was that of heat transferral, and with a little refining and practice, it wasn’t just him absorbing it but he could release it too.
Miyu had something akin to the classic idea of extra-sensory perception. She was the classic image of an ESPer at a desk, being made to guess the symbol on a card someone else was holding. She could count cards without counting them and they didn’t even have to be her own. It didn’t even end at Duel Monsters, it made for a good party trick, she thought. Any attempt she made at promising to never cheat using it fell apart as they all knew she had her fingers crossed. Though it did highlight the discrepancy between herself and the integrity that Aqua embodied.
Hibiki, Windy’s Origin, had the ability to move things in the network. Whether it was files and data or semi-physical objects in the Link VRAINS, he had an acute affinity for telekinesis. It had its occasional use, especially on his low spoon days after the car accident. Being able to whisk off an email or place an order on a food delivery app just by using his mind, without even opening his computer or phone, had its benefits. Even if they did not extend to the real world, more often than not.
Regardless of power, and how it was displayed or formatted, it was all under the umbrella known as Link Sense. None of these children had these abilities prior to the Incident, as far as they were aware and in the field of para-science, it was dismissed entirely outright, even by the Hanoi Lieutenants. But still. All six of them had some form of extra-cognitive ability.
Yes, Spectre included.
Loyal right hand man to the Leader of the Knights of Hanoi. Perhaps, with that in mind, his Link Sense did seem most fitting: he was a dog, a hound to his master and so he had the keenness for it. He could only detect Earth, though only Earth, but that was more than enough for him. He didn’t need anything more strange and unusual about him. Especially as his awakening to this latent power was when it had hurt him.
The only time he had become aware of his Link Sense was when Earth had been decompiled.
Spectre hadn’t felt each cut and strike of the laser through Earth as he was vivisected. But when it was over. When there was no life or body left of him, that was when Spectre had felt it. A gaping pain in his heart and a tear proceeded to roll down his cheek afterwards.
He did not understand? What was that? Oh, it was… Earth, he would later come to realise.
Well. It didn’t matter. Not anymore. It never had. That is what Spectre attempted to resolve. Whatever this ability of his was, this sense of connection that he had between himself and… his other self, as he had put it, it was severed. It had been purposefully cut to pieces. There was no coming back from that.
But where there was a will, there was a way and there was none quite so willful as Fujiki Yusaku. Also known as Playmaker. The greatest thorn that Spectre had ever known in his side but where there were thorns, there were roses, too. Unfortunately.
He brought them back. First his own, of course, and then together, they brought back the other Ignis, and when the Earth Ignis lived again, Spectre felt it.
Another tear rolled down his eye and he was sick to his stomach.
It should have been impossible. There was no room for this connection in his life, between himself and his master. He had never once questioned his orders, even when curiosity had frayed him briefly at the edges nor when he had felt a profound grief for someone he had never technically met.
Or so he thought.
Spectre objected more to the idea than Ryoken but Ryoken accepted it with a passive, even pleasant, defeat. He did not want to destroy the Ignis. He did not want the victims of the Incident to suffer more. If it did come to that, of course, he would make the tough decisions but he had faith that the Origins and the Ignis, their bond would prevail.
Even the one between Spectre and Earth.
With no hesitation at all, Earth allowed himself to be adopted by the Knights of Hanoi. There were mumblings of protest from the others, of course. It seemed extremely unwise… Right up until Spectre had smiled a genuine smile meeting his Ignis for the first time and the gentleness he exhibited, it did seem to convey a change of self and the turnover of a leaf.
Thus, that was life. For a little while at least. Awkwardness in the rooms wherever Earth went, because of course, but it was palpable. They could deal with it.
And Spectre was now aware of his own Link Sense. It went both ways. In the beginning and the end, in death and in rebirth. It did not seem like an especially powerful ability. Thank goodness. He did not need something so fanciful as to perceive the network with his eyes or ears, or any other number of ESPer like abilities. He was content with what he had.
Until the sensations spread. It truly did work both ways.
“Why are you blushing, Ignis?” Spectre huffed.
All he had done was kiss Ryoken good night. It was a strange arrangement but one which filled his heart. He and his master were lovers, after all, they slept in the same bed. Himself and his Ignis, they were partners so Earth would hide in his Duel Disc wherever he set it, most typically on his bedside table. Though Earth was a rather bright creature, with his luminescent eyes, it wasn’t the cyan that had caught Spectre’s attention most foul after he rolled over from kissing Ryoken.
It was the red in his cheeks.
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t watching but.” Earth stammered. “I felt it.”
“You felt it?” Spectre echoed.
That caught Ryoken’s ear so he rolled over as well.
“Now that I think about it… No, I shall not say it, I don’t know how to say it without miscommunicating.” Earth rambled.
Ryoken’s eyebrows drew in. He had his suspicions. As did Spectre.
“Just say it.” Spectre sighed.
“I can feel all your kisses or hand holding. However rare. How peculiar.” Earth said.
“I doubt that.” Spectre said.
“I… do not.” Ryoken piped up.
“What?” Spectre did not snarl but he wanted as he turned his head to look over his shoulder.
“I’m curious, I have a hypothesis.” Ryoken said.
“Huh? What?” Spectre was all but trampled upon by Ryoken.
Ryoken clambered over him without ever leaving the comfort of being under the sheets. He shoved Spectre down with his body, all so he could reach over him so he could pick up his Duel Disc off his bedside table. With Earth, flailing, inside of it.
Ryoken kissed Earth’s cheek, making Earth blush and… Spectre felt it. He felt the red of the hypertension in Earth’s body and even the sensation of Ryoken’s lips on his cheeks, like a phantom. He would always know it.
“I don’t think we know the full scope of how your particular Link Sense works just yet, Spectre.” Ryoken said, very smug that his first experiment appeared to be a success based on how Spectre fumed underneath him, teased.
He was also quite chuffed that he had even gotten a pot shot in on Earth. Ryoken placed him back down and slid off Spectre. He got comfortable in bed again.
“We should do more tests regarding your specific extra-sensory abilities, I know you're not interested but I am. It will be helpful information to have if Earth ever goes rogue and attempts armageddon of his own volition.” Ryoken said, far too blase, even sing-song, to be talking about such things.
“I-I would! I would never!” Earth sputtered.
“Quite frankly, I would be more surprised if the other Origins don’t have this ability in their arsenals of Link Sense.” Ryoken continued to muse. “But, if we can train yours up, it might even be possible for you to detect Ignises other than your own. Yes, that could be very helpful in the event that we do have to terminate the Ignis after all.”
“Please shut up,” Spectre begged, he rolled over so he could bury his face in his pillow, “your not just making Earth embarrassed but myself as well.”
Ryoken was quiet for a moment and Spectre almost thought they were over this awful pillow talk.
“Did your Link Sense tell you that?” Ryoken asked after that beat, simply unable to help himself.
Spectre groaned, “Good night.”
His conviction to never be involved too deep in this unexpected side effect of the Lost Incident all the more compounded. He had done so well for so long to simply ignore everything which did not suit his narrative of what suited him. He was not going to let this peculiar depth of his and his Ignis’ bond ruin it.
No matter what Ryoken was curious about.

Annotating the Future: How Image Annotation Services Drive AI Success
In this fast-paced AI world, the success of any machine-learning system mainly depends on the quality of the data fed into it for exercise. In this journey, image annotation services have emerged to become an essential enabler, transforming raw visual data into structured, labeled datasets. These annotations are the backbone of AI innovations that power facial recognition, autonomous vehicles, e-commerce, healthcare, and beyond.
This blog will discuss how image annotation services are making waves in transforming the landscape for AI by enabling smarter, more accurate models.
What is Image Annotation?
Image annotation is the process of tagging images with labels or metadata to help AI models 'understand' and interpret visual data. Annotated images guide algorithms in identifying objects, classifying images, and predicting with structured data.
Annotated images are crucial because raw data left to itself is unstructured and useless, whereas clarity given to images helps ML systems to perform with much higher accuracy on tasks like object detection, image segmentation, and activity recognition.
Why Image Annotation is Critical for AI Success
Better Training Data, Smarter AI Models: AI systems are, simply put, only as smart as the data they are trained on; annotated images clear the way for the models, setting a foundation on which the models will learn patterns and carry on and make predictions.
Confronting Real-World Complexity: A real-world environment is dynamic and complex. This is where high-quality image annotation ensures that models can work through these complexities, like objects overlapping, changing lighting conditions, or different angles.
Fueling Automation: From retail to robotics, annotated data fuels automation by enabling machines to do mundane tasks like inventory counting, autonomous navigation, and quality checks on assembly lines.
Custom AI Applications: Every industry has its own specific needs; annotation services enable the creation of customized datasets tailored to certain applications.
Core Image Annotation Types
Different types of annotation for various AI applications. Let’s delve deeper into some common techniques thereof:
Object Detection: Tags objects in an image with bounding boxes. Example: Identifying cars, pedestrians, and traffic signs for autonomous vehicles.
Semantic Segmentation: Assigns each pixel in the image to a particular class, thus creating highly-detailed annotations. Example: Classifying road, sidewalk, and vegetation for urban planning.
Keypoint Annotation: Marks certain specified points on the object or human like facial landmarks or joint positions. Example: Tracking facial expressions for emotion detection.
Image Classification: Labeling an entire image based on its primary content. Example: Classifying images of cats, dogs, and birds for a pet identification application.
Polygon Annotation: Outline differently shaped objects to yield accurate labeling results. Example: Defining the boundaries of buildings in satellite imagery.
3D Cuboid Annotation: A 3D view of objects added for applications that require describing depth and dimension. Example: Annotating furniture for Augmented Reality (AR) home design tools.

#1167 How do driverless cars navigate a city?
How do driverless cars navigate a city? Driverless cars use a whole mix of software and sensors to navigate through a city. They use Lidar, radar, cameras, and self-learning algorithms. Driverless cars are becoming more common these days, but they always have to have a driver paying attention at the wheel in case something goes wrong. There are 5 levels of automation for cars, 6 if you count no automation as a level. Level 1 has some driver assistance, such as keeping within lanes. Level 2 has partial automation, such as steering on a highway. Level 3 has conditional automation, which means the driver has to take control when the car asks them to. Level 4 has high automation, which means the car can move on its own in most situations, but if it comes to a difficulty and there is no driver to assist, it will just stop. Level 5 is full automation in all situations. This doesn’t exist yet. At some point, cars will become completely autonomous. Currently, Google has test cars that have driven over 1 million km without having any accidents. Actually, that is not completely true. The cars have been involved in plenty of accidents, but almost all of them have been caused by other drivers driving into the driverless cars. There was one incident in 2016 when a Google car hit the side of a bus but Google updated the software and there haven’t been any accidents since then. The Google test car would be a level 4 car. Anyway, we are not going to look at how effective or not driverless cars will be today. I want to learn how they do what they do. Let’s take the Google driverless car as a good example because it has the software and hardware that would be rolled out onto regular cars. The first thing the cars need is excellent map software and GPS. With the Google car, this will come from Google maps. Since Google maps was introduced in 2005, the technology has improved exponentially. Today, it is incredibly detailed and has street information for most cities in most countries around the world. Coupled with that, the GPS satellites that Google has access to can pinpoint the cars location to about 4 m, depending on the surroundings. Tall buildings can block the signal. However, Google maps alone isn’t enough because there are many things in a city that don’t show up on the maps. Driverless cars have to cope with people, other cars, roadworks, animals, cyclists, emergency vehicles, random stuff in the street, weather, and a host of other unexpected things. How do they do this? The second thing a driverless car needs is lots of cameras. Driverless cars have cameras to cover every available viewpoint. These cameras are connected to the car's CPU, but they might also be connected to a service center where somebody can offer assistance. They will also probably record everything that they see. These cameras are high definition, but they are not so much use in the dark or in bad weather. Driverless cars need other systems to cope in these conditions. Driverless cars also use lidar and radar to be able to “see” when the conditions don’t allow their cameras to work properly. Lidar and radar are similar technologies but lidar uses light and radar uses radio waves. Lidar shoots out a laser and detects how long it takes the light to come back. By knowing the amount of time, the onboard CPU can work out the distance to whatever objects are around the car and that are reflecting the light back. Radar is the same, but it calculates the time it takes for a radio wave to come back. Both lidar and radar are useful, but lidar is far faster and more accurate. It can make high-definition 3d images in any weather. The trouble with lidar is that it is very expensive, so a lot of cars will use radar as well. The biggest part of the driverless car system, though, is the onboard computer. The car can have all the sensors in the world, but if the onboard computer can’t tell what they are, it is all worthless. The onboard computer has to be able to not only see everything but also to work out what it is seeing. And then it has to work out how to react to what it has seen. With a lot of things, it is not that complicated, but people and bicycles seem to be proving a difficult problem. They are both unpredictable, but bicycles are also difficult to see. They provide an unusual profile and cars have trouble working out which way they are moving or predicting where they will go. However, Google say that their car is almost 99% perfect at seeing bikes. One of the systems that will be in self driving cars is machine learning algorithms. These systems might not be able to tell what a bicycle is or which way it is going, but they learn with each interaction. Another way of helping them to learn is to use humans as teachers. The human drives and teaches the AI system what to do in certain situations. With each experience, the number of situations that the car will find unpredictable shrink. The last system is one that has not been tested yet. Once there are enough self driving cars on the streets, they would probably all be networked. Once that happens, we will have swarm data because all of the cars will know what all of the other cars are seeing. That will increase their ability to drive. And this is what I learned today.
