I was helping one of my friends research with neural network analysis of fmri scans last semester. It’s so frustrating that a lot of the oxygen in the room is taken up by either grifters or text and image generation. AI as a field is really cool and really interesting, and I worry that the emergence of gen AI tools will make it radioactive to the public

It's always so weird that like. Fully a third of job listings I see in machine learning are for biomedical research. And easily two thirds of postdocs. Massive, huge family of applications that seems completely absent from the public discourse. From the way people talk about it you'd think half the field works in image generation and nobody does medical research, but in reality only a tiny handful of people seem to be doing image generation, and everyone else is either doing language models or studying cancer and designing novel drugs

might be controversial here - but if quakerism dies out, it'll be their own fault. I've been told that other yearly meetings aren't like my own, but in my own yearly meeting, there is such a strong undercurrent of elitism and snobbery. it is so difficult for young people to join and stay. too much is expected of them, and they aren't supported in any real sense. there is no pastoral care. there is an inherent assumption that people have ample resources, both financially and time-wise. I'm being so for real here (maybe a lil dramatic) - I feel actively pushed out more often than not.

idk where people get this idea that binghe would be betrayed or heartbroken if he found out "our" sqq is sy. do people genuinely think he doesn't already know sy and sj are different people . . . ? the entire mountain knew that shit on day 1 because sy was comically bad at staying in character they were making that man run 2000 possession tests to see what on earth could be wearing sj's skin. binghe is also incredibly intelligent, and quite literally comments on things that don't add up several times throughout the novel, like sy knowing things he logically shouldn't and having some sort of eerie premonition. he's fully aware that sy isn't sj - if he actually cared, he would have confronted sy on it, but he chooses not to, cause he really . . . doesn't gaf at all. he likes His shizun, whoever that person may be, not because of the skin he wears but because of the person he is. like this isn't even remotely on binghe's issue radar he couldn't really give less of a fuck if he tried
