As the name indicates, nuclear tests are a type of stress test. It uses a small amount of tracer (radioactive substance) and an imaging machine to produce images showing how the blood is flowing to your heart. Nuclear stress test in Brooklyn is done to measure blood flow when you rest and perform any activity. With the help of this test, it is easy to determine areas that have poor blood flow or cause damage to your heart.

With February being Heart Month, what better time is there to call attention to the hospital’s newest way to treat heart disease?
For heart patients, medication and surgery is just the start of health restoration.
You have to change the way you live, says Dr. William Scarpa.
And, the Cardiac Rehabilitation program at Wake Forest Baptist Health Wilkes Medical Center in North Wilkesboro is dynamic way to guide patients through the needed changes after a cardiac event.
“We’re seeing improvements in lifestyle,” Scarpa said. “We’ve seen more activity levels, smoking cessation, blood pressure control, medical compliance, improvement in ‘six minute walks,’ improvements in oxygen levels and patients are sleeping better. From a medical and social aspect, it’s been a great boost.”
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Center opened in November with Scarpa as its medical director. Butch DeBoever is the program manager and oversees staffing, scheduling and equipment.
Dr. Scarpa, a cardiologist who lives in North Wilkesboro, and who is also known as an accomplished guitarist and performer, has been at the Wilkes hospital for eight years. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he had worked in New York City, New Jersey and Pinehurst before coming here.
DeBoever relocated from a similar facility in Hickory, and is a native of Kansas City, Mo. He has many years of experience directing cardiac rehabilitation facilities and works side by side with Scarpa at the center.
There had been a need for a Cardiac Rehabilitation program in Wilkes.
“We had our grand opening in November,” Scarpa said. “Patients were previously traveling to Boone or Elkin. This has been in the making for the last several years. We were fortunate to get the funding to open our facility. It has been well received.”
Before, when doctors at the Wilkes hospital suggested rehabilitation, patients didn’t want to drive out of town. With the change, interest in rehab has increased, Scarpa said.
The Cardiac Rehab program is an outpatient program that combines monitored exercised, individual instruction and counseling. These services are designed to help patients recover faster, so they can return to a full and productive life.
The program is designed for those who have heart disease such as angina, congestive heart failure, a heart attack, bypass surgery, valve replacement, heart transplants, balloon angioplasty or stents. Counseling is also available to reduce stress, which is known to be harmful to cardiac patients.
Pulmonary Rehab is for patients diagnosed with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). This outpatient program uses monitored exercise and strength training along with education to help patients return to their highest functional capacity and includes breathing retraining, energy conservation and other topics related to managing pulmonary disease.
There are also group sessions that allow patients to meet each other who suffer the same ailments so that they can share experiences.
“We are reaching maximum capacity right now,” Scarpa said. “It’s growing and providing a service in Wilkes County that has not been available until now.”
There is a walking track, weights, lifting machines and other exercise equipment in the center.
The rehab program consists of 36 one-hour sessions and are scheduled for two to three days per week, Scarpa said.
“These sessions include education and supervised exercise along with dietary classes,” Scarpa said. “I’d like to start some cooking classes eventually and have a newsletter. I already have a lot of dietary and lifestyle tips to be put together in a newsletter.”
The facility is located off the main lobby in the hospital.
About the Heart Center: a partnership between Wilkes Regional and Wake Forest Baptist Health began in 2012. It has been staffed with two board-certified cardiologists — Scarpa and Dr. Julian Thomas. Since that transition, the center has grown.
The Heart Center provides care and diagnostic testing for patients with heart-related diseases and disorders. Many Heart Center patients are referred by their family physician to be evaluated and treated by Heart Center cardiologists.
Services at the Heart Center include: echo cardiology, stress testing, nuclear stress testing, EKG and arrhythmia evaluation, treatment of heart murmurs and heart valve disorders, Holter/Event monitors, treatment of coronary artery disease (acute and chronic), treatment of heart failure, pacemaker management and cardiac medication management.
