HYPNOSIS MICROPHONE 4TH INTERNATIONAL POLL (DECEMBER 2020) Part 1: Consumption
Thank you for your participation! These are the final results for the 4th Hypnosis Microphone International Poll. After months of work on this, we have estimates for general fandom opinions. Do you agree or disagree with the general opinions? Please let us know!
The results were held back from original posting as we were waiting to post for a month before the 2nd DRB finals (which is on Doppo’s Birthday this year.) My deepest apologies for how long this took to get out. We will be releasing these results with a section per day, with the end of these results showing the Japanese side.
Click the READ MORE to view the results.
PREFACE
The data collection for this poll received 902 votes to give us an indication of the demographic of those who consume Hypnosis Mic. This poll was open to English speakers, and thus, results may be considerably Euro/American-centric. The word ‘international’ has been used to refer to how fans are from many places around the world, but the poll may also refer to this group as ‘English-speaking’ etc. The Japanese poll had a smaller respondent pool with 400.
This poll received the most activity through Twitter, given that the series is most active on that platform. The poll was also posted on Tumblr, Facebook and the HypMic wiki. Commentary has been given on sections of the poll. These results will be available in full on from this account. The Japanese poll results shall follow about a week with comparison to this poll.
The poll was conducted from December 2020 to January 2021. This poll is UNOFFICIAL and none of the composers of this poll have any relation to King Records whatsoever.
This will be split into MULTIPLE posts due to the amount of data and limitations of tumblr.
PART 1: THE CONSUMPTION OF HYPNOSIS MIC
This section examines what percentage of HypMic's English fanbase consumes certain media.
How long have you been into Hypnosis Mic?
Before the project began - Sep 2017: 3.7%
Since Pre-Battle Season 1 - Oct 2017 - Feb 2018: 7%

Announcement of the start of the 2nd DRB: December 2020

Looking at those who were around during the battle season 88.4% did not vote at all, while 11.6% did vote.
At the time of the 1st DRB, voting was only possible by buying CDs and certain merchandise, unlike the additions of the 2nd DRB where you could purchase a ticket to the lives.

Least bought goods: Items from food collabs (2%), stageplay specific goods (2.7%), and accessories and cosmetics (4.3%)

Understand some Japanese & don’t use translations: 8%
With these numbers, we can see that:
55.6% of respondents know some degree of Japanese. This poll did not ask to quantify how much Japanese was known by fans. 44.4% do not know Japanese.
89.2% of respondents use translations.
To the 2.9% of people who don’t use translations and don’t understand a thing that’s happening, please respond. Are you okay?
How familiar are you with Japanese hip-hop, the genre of HypMic?

Regularly listens to Western hip-hop but not J hip-hop: 12%
Regularly listens to Japanese music but not J hip-hop: 54.5%

34.8% of respondents listen to either Japanese or Western hip-hop. 65.2% of respondents do not listen to hip-hop.
These numbers seem to match up with the later results that show that 79% of respondents do not listen to J hip-hop artists outside of HypMic and 69% of respondents do not listen to/could list Western hip-hop artists at all.

Where to find Tim Key’s writing on the internet
Instagram
Love the pando poems but they’re in the books. His daily series in the run up to the Dec 2019 election is great and is only on Instagram. I reread it all a little while ago (with some googling to remember what was going on each day to work out what each one was about) and the final one was even more depressing now considering everything that’s happened in the last couple of years.

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF ANNOUNCES LIVE AT MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL
Arriving January 14th via Southern Lord on CD/DL formats; LP to be released via Southern Lord in North America on May 13th, 2022 (via Pomperipossa Records in Europe). // Listen to "The Truth, The Glow, The Fall (Live).
Anybody who has witnessed a live performance of Anna von Hausswolff and band can attest to the extraordinary and commanding nature of the experience. The distinctive music, as captured across five full-length albums, comes to life, shifting from hypnotic and mantra-like moods to thunderous drama, dissonance and cacophony. The musicians master playful dynamics and wield immense power. Following the release of her solo pipe organ album All Thoughts Fly and an accompanying sell-out European tour (Nov/Dec 2021), this January, Southern Lord are releasing Anna von Hausswolff, Live at Montreux Jazz Festival (2018). Across six pieces, Anna von Hausswolff performs sensational renditions of fan-favorites from the two beloved albums; The Miraculous and Dead Magic, with the backing of a full band including additional vocals from her sister / cinematographer Maria von Hausswolff (full credits can be found below).
Watch (+ share) the visualizer for Anna Von Hausswolff's "The Truth, The Glow, The Fall (Live) on YouTube.
The infamous Montreux Jazz Festival is one of the largest annual jazz festivals, now operating for over 50 years. About the experience Anna von Hausswolff remarks:
"In the beginning of 2013 I was texting back and forth with my friend Albin Oskarsson. He wanted me to come and play at a jazz festival that he was living nearby, it was Montreux Jazz Festival. At that point I was still quite unknown outside Sweden and regardless of my friend's many attempts to contact the festival they never returned to him with an offer. I gave up the idea, he did not. Later that same year he unexpectedly died and a few years later, in 2017, an email popped up in my inbox, it was a request to open for Nick Cave and the bad seeds at the Montreux jazz festival. The tragedy that Albin was still not around to share the excitement with me gave me sorrow.
But, through the magic of music comfort came. The show was an emotional turmoil of ecstasy and grief, shared with an incredible audience and atmosphere. And, eventually, I could see his face in the venue, floating above all others, smiling and waving towards me. I’m so happy to have been given this moment and I’m beyond grateful to Montreux Jazz Festival, John Harris and Mathieu Jaton who so beautifully recorded this special concert that I will keep close to my heart forever and ever."
Live at Montreux Jazz Festival was mixed on the “Queen Neve” desk, previously owned by Queen (thus the name ) and situated at the Mountain Studios in the casino of Montreux, now located at Svenska Grammofonstudion, Gothenburg - further capturing the magic.

Why Taylor Swift's '1989' Is Her Best Album: Critic's Take
by Richard S. He November 09, 2017, 11:40 am EST
In celebration of Taylor Swift's singular pop catalog in the days leading up to the release of her sixth LP, Reputation, this Friday (Nov. 10), Billboard asked five writers to argue for one of her five studio albums as her best. Here, Richard S. He makes the case for 2014's 1989, Swift's fifth album, and her most successful pop crossover to date.
By Taylor Swift's fifth album, her coming-of-age stories had already been told. When you're in your mid-twenties, once you've survived first love and heartbreak, all you're left with is yourself. 1989 captures the feeling of having grown into your adult self, when all that's left to do is announce it to the world.
With her singles from 2012's Red, Taylor Swift had already made the unequivocal leap to pop radio. But two years later, with 1989, Swift set out to record her "first documented, official pop album" -- and that distinction made all the difference. The essence of Swift's songwriting, her effortless ability to vocalize the listener's intimate emotions, is still intact. But 1989 pushes everything further: Using fewer words, Swift embraces more adventurous melodies, moods, production.
Country music is about storytelling, but being a pop star means embodying the art through your image, videos, and everything you stand for. So even without any overt country songs, 1989 is the definitive Taylor Swift album. If Red was the turning point of her career, 1989 is the culmination.
"Welcome to New York," the album's opening track, reaches past Taylor's earliest role models (Carly Simon, James Taylor, Shania Twain) to Bruce Springsteen. On 1984's Born in the U.S.A., The Boss -- another lifelong singer-songwriter -- moved past traditional guitar-rock, embracing pop without compromise. "Welcome to New York," like "Born in the U.S.A.," opens its album with unapologetically glossy synths, the sound of a clean break from the past.
And like Born in the U.S.A., 1989 had seven singles (counting Target-exclusive bonus track and fan favorite "New Romantics"), each of which couldn't be more different from the last. Six were collaborations with modern pop maestro Max Martin, who's worked with every star imaginable. But Swift is one of the rare few who's a confident enough songwriter to push him to new heights.
youtube
"Shake It Off" hides its genius in plain sight. Every second is an individual, overlapping hook -- vocal melodies, horns, drum rhythms -- all amounting to one giant earworm. It's an astonishingly complex composition, a puzzle where you can't imagine all the pieces fitting, until they suddenly fall into place. Using only three chords, Swift takes us on a journey from anxiety ("Got nothing in my brain! That's what people say!") to self-acceptance. It's life as a pop song: the constant stream of hooks can seem overwhelming, until you learn to embrace the chaos.
But "Bad Blood" turns the tables -- you don't have to shake it off. It’s both diss track and affectionate parody, where the joke is how closely it resembles a Katy Perry song, down to Taylor’s spot-on Katy imitation in the verses. And if you thought Taylor-pop was totally serious, there's "Blank Space." In the video, her first of several collaborations with director Joseph Kahn, Swift embraces her media image -- the hysterical maneater, who breaks up with boyfriends to write songs about them. She mocks herself, as well as the gossip industry for perpetuating her image and us for buying into it, only to reveal the ultimate truth: we all live for drama. “Blank Space” is one of the best songs ever written about pop, a master class in fame as performance art -- and the foundation for each of Reputation’s four singles so far.
youtube
Fourth single “Style” showcases Swift’s songwriting at its purest. She snarls her way through brooding verses -- a midnight drive on a dark road -- until suddenly, the song blooms into a glorious, sun-drenched, hair-blowing-in-the-wind chorus. With the simplest major/minor shift, she evokes worlds of emotion. And in an era where traditional pop bridges have, in fact, gone out of style, Swift digs further into them. “Take me home!” she belts. Is it meant to be optimistic or terrifying? Three years later, we still don’t know. The song's lost highway never ends.
These aren’t pure love songs, like “You Belong with Me” or “Love Story." They’re just as much about the messy, internal feelings around relationships. “Wildest Dreams” is Swift at her fatalist best, foreseeing the end of a romance before it even begins. On “Out of the Woods," a chaotic, Jack Antonoff-shepherded pop symphony worthy of Brian Wilson, she narrates a love that was doomed from the start -- and learns to regret nothing, even the near-death experience ("Remember when you hit the brakes too soon/ 20 stitches in a hospital room?") that brought about the relationship's end. It all culminates in the Imogen Heap collaboration “Clean”: the Taylor ballad to end all Taylor ballads, in which she finally lets loose the tears she’s been holding back the entire album, and forges a new beginning.
youtube
With 1989, Taylor Swift moved beyond love songs. The album spoke to a generation of millennials living through uncertain times, looking for stability as young adults. Taylor’s songs offer no easy answers, but endless emotional generosity.
True blockbuster albums only come along a few times a decade. They’re not just about hit singles -- they redefine the cultural zeitgeist. 1989 wasn’t driven by nostalgia, but channeled the spirit of the late ‘80s to breathe new life into 2014 pop. Taylor’s cited influences -- Madonna, Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel – didn’t just chase trends, they were auteurs. They made pop music at the highest level, which felt completely unexpected yet instantly familiar at the same time.
1989’s had an unusually long cultural afterlife. It grew so big it broke her previous ritual: a new album in October/November every two years. She was just 24 when 1989came out -- now she’s 27, and Reputation comes out this Friday. Like Michael Jackson following Thriller with Bad, the stakes seem impossibly high. But regardless of how Reputation’s received, we're still talking about its predecessor, living through its songs. Empty hype and marketing are soon forgotten. You can’t manufacture the kind of attention Taylor Swift commands -- you can only earn it.
The LP became Taylor's third straight to sell over a million copies in its opening frame -- a near-impossibility in the post-CD era -- notching the best first-week numbers by any artist since Eminem over a decade earlier. In total, the set spawned three Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits and was eventually certified 6x Platinum, making 1989 the kind of commercial behemoth that served as its own throwback to the late-'80s pop period Swift had tried so hard to evoke. But in 2014, her fans already knew she was an all-timer. 1989 just confirmed it for everyone else.

Child with the blues, or, “Eve’s Bayou” turns 20
I honestly didn’t realize that the movie was this old already. Explains why I’ve seen a couple of different retrospectives of it this week.
It really is one of my favorite films of all time (if that’s quite the right word to use for a film that ends in a weirdly dark place). I have it on a positively ancient DVD, and also the soundtrack CD somewhere. (And again: it’s 20 years old, people.)
All of the performances in it are amazing.
It’s a lovely, somewhat depressing, spectacular directing debut by Kasi Lemmons.
Interesting the different artistic and social place we’re in now. Even allowing that it was a period film at the time -- it takes place in the 1960s -- I’m not sure you could shoot the event that spins the family out of control. I think people would simply not be willing to accept it shown on screen.
The trailer is ... odd. Despite the fact that everything you see in it actually occurs on screen, once you get past the first 30 seconds or so, it somehow makes it look like a different movie than it is. And yet, everything in it is from the film.

20 Years Later, Eve’s Bayou Is Still a Stunning Portrait of Black American Life By Angelica Jade Bastién (vulture.com)
I don’t quite remember the first summer I went to Loreauville, Louisiana. But I distinctly recall the emotions of returning to those acres of land, where my great-grandfather built a home we’ve called our own for 100 years — awe and glory, love and hope, and a twinge of melancholy. These same emotions take hold whenever I watch Eve’s Bayou, the debut of writer-director Kasi Lemmons, which premiered 20 years ago this month and uses rural Louisiana as the setting of its spellbinding tale about a young black girl’s adolescence. Perhaps that’s why it’s the only film my mother and I agree on. Its luxurious textures, melancholy mood, and the Creole that passes the lips of the black characters remind us both, in unique ways, of Loreauville.
The film operates deftly on multiple levels: It’s a stunning coming-of-age tale (an exceedingly rare example of one that privileges the experience of young black girls); an honest, hyperspecific portrait of black life in rural Louisiana; and one of the greatest writer-director debuts in American cinematic history....
HAUNTING MAGIC: ON "EVE'S BAYOU," 20 YEARS LATER by Seongyong Cho (rogerebert.com)
The opening scene of “Eve’s Bayou” is one of the most captivating opening lines I have ever encountered: “Memory is the selection of images, some elusive, others printed indelibly on the brain. The summer I killed my father, I was 10 years old.” As we wonder about what happened during that summer in question, the movie immerses us into the small, vivid world of its young heroine who is trying to process what has been swirling inside her good but inherently problematic family. “Eve’s Bayou” is a haunting drama of love, hate, guilt and sorrow, and is surprisingly more complex and powerful than expected. It freely drifts around emotional realism and magic realism via its distinctive Southern atmosphere...
20th Anniversary Special: Cast Of 'Eve's Bayou' Talks About Film's Lasting Legacy Ashley Terrell (essence.com) Nov, 07, 2017
Christened “the best film of 1997” by the late film critic Roger Ebert, Eve’s Bayou continues to leave a spell-bounding mark on audiences on its 20-year anniversary.
The film, written and directed by Kasi Lemmons in her directorial debut —and executive produced by Samuel L. Jackson— tells a story about the Batistes, an affluent Creole family in Louisiana. After a party, main character, Eve witnesses her father having sex with a family friend causing a ripple effect of a turbulent summer leading to tragedy.
Starring Jackson, Lynn Whitfield, Debbi Morgan, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Meagan Good, Jake Smollett and Diahann Carroll, the film received accolades including nominations for the 1998 NAACP Image Awards....
'Eve's Bayou' and 'One Night Stand’ Took Big Risks in 1997 Jason Bailey (vice.com) Nov 15 2017, 1:24pm
“The summer I killed my father, I was ten years old.” Those are the first words spoken in Eve’s Bayou, and as opening lines go, you could do a helluva lot worse. This evocative memory drama was directed by first-time filmmaker Kasi Lemmons, who was best known as an actor, primarily for her supporting role as Clarice Starling’s academy roommate in The Silence Of The Lambs. The movie was selected by Roger Ebert as the single best film of 1997, which is quite a compliment considering the competition.
The ten-year-old of that opening line is Eve (Jurnee Smollett, in a performance of uncommon skill for an actor of any age). She is a quintessential middle child: Her little brother, Poe (Jake Smollett, her real brother), is mommy’s baby, and older sister Cisely (Meagan Good) is daddy’s girl. Said daddy is Louis (Samuel L. Jackson), “the best colored doctor in all Louisiana.” Sometimes Eve goes with him on house calls, and observes lonely young wives purring pleas like, “Could you give me something for the pain?” Early in the film, Eve accidentally spies her father in an intimate moment with a family friend (Lisa Nicole Carson). Eve’s upset by what she sees, but Cisely is particularly livid, for reasons that will become clear....
The perfectly selected end-credits song was performed by Erykah Badu.
(NOTE: For the official corporate approved version, you’ll need to go to the Erykah Badu topic version at Youtube itself at this link; for some reason, they disabled the Tumblr embed for this song shortly after this piece was first posted. For a non-approved version that may disappear at any second, see below.)

HYPNOSIS MICROPHONE 4TH INTERNATIONAL POLL (DECEMBER 2020) Part 7: Japanese Consumption
Thank you for your participation! These are the final results for the 4th Hypnosis Microphone International Poll. After months of work on this, we have estimates for general fandom opinions. Do you agree or disagree with the general opinions? Please let us know!
The results were held back from original posting as we were waiting to post for a month before the 2nd DRB finals (which is on Doppo’s Birthday this year.) So my deepest apologies for how long this took to get out.
PART 7: Japanese Consumption Comparison
This section compares the percentage of HypMic’s English fanbase against the Japanese fanbase in how they consume certain media.

NOTABLE DATES
Release of Enter the Hypnosis Microphone: April 2019
Announcement of Dotsuitare Honpo & Bad Ass Temple: September 2019
Announcement of the start of the 2nd DRB: December 2020
From this group of people, only 264 people, or 66%% of respondents were around during the 1st Battle Season.
Looking at those who were around during the battle season (70%) did not vote at all, while (30%) did vote.
To compare, 293 out of 902 International respondents were around during the 1st Battle Season. 88.4% did not vote at all, while 11.6% did vote.
At the time of the 1st DRB, voting was only possible by buying CDs and certain merchandise, unlike the additions of the 2nd DRB where you could purchase a ticket to the lives. Additionally, it is much easier for JP fans to buy the CDs as HypMic is from Japan.

Have not listened to the dramas: INTL: 2.1% | JP: N/A
OBSERVATIONS
As not everyone knows that most dramatracks are readily available on the wiki and finding translations themselves are difficult, it is inevitable that INTL viewership is significantly lower than JP viewership.
All JP respondents have listened to at least one dramatrack. Given that only 2.1% of INTL respondents have not listened to at least one dramatrack, it may be possible that those who have not listened to the dramatracks are in a very small minority.
INTL fans seemed to not have been as interested in DH and BAT’s introduction tracks, while JP fans showed similar numbers for DH and BAT’s introductions to the Main 4 Divisions introductions.
The least listened to tracks that are not considered bonuses (Guidebook + Manga) are:
International: All in the Same Boat (60.9%), Chaser from the Past (60.9%), Enter the Hypnosis Microphone Dramas (61%), Helter Skelter (61%), and The Heart’s Conviction Can’t Be Broken (62.6%)
Japanese: Enter the Hypnosis Microphone Dramas (74.3%), The Champion (78%), Helter Skelter (78.8%), Chaser from the Past (78.8%), and The Loneliness... of a Puppet (80.3%)

Thus, all together:

SOME/ALL F.P vs M: 75.75%
SOME/ALL TDD: 79.85%
SOME/ALL D.H & B.A.T: 64.5%
At the time of the poll, BB vs MTC, FP vs M and the TDD manga had completed, while DH vs BAT was incomplete. BB vs MTC +, FP vs M+ and Dawn of Divisions were announced during the poll’s conduction.
OBSERVATIONS
This is the one of the few categories where International HypMic fans consume content more than Japanese HypMic fans.
How much of other HypMic of other HypMic content have you explored?
Track 1: INTL: 69.7% | JP: 30.8%
Track 2: INTL: 70.3% | JP: 25.5%

NOTES:
This question also asked about those who have watched the anime, but as respondents ticked multiple options of how much they had seen, these results were unable to be posted. The same happened with the question on Spotify Radio episodes.
Track 2 & Track 3 were playing during COVID which may account for the lower numbers of viewers. Niconama streams have also been discontinued and have now been replaced by the HPNM Youtube streams.
This is the one of the few categories where International HypMic fans consume content more than Japanese HypMic fans.
What HypMic official merchandise have you bought? This does not include magazines that contain manga chapters or interviews.

Least bought goods: Items from food collabs (22%), stageplay specific goods (29.8%), and accessories and cosmetics (29.8%)
Do you play Alternative Rap Battle (ARB)?

DON’T READ STORIES: 28.1%
How familiar are you with Japanese hip-hop, the genre of HypMic?
Regularly listens to J hip-hop: INTL: 22.88% | JP: 54.3%
Regularly listens to Western hip-hop but not J hip-hop: INTL: 12% | JP: 5.5%
Regularly listens to Japanese music but not J hip-hop: INTL: 54.5% | JP: 32%
Do not listen to Japanese music or hip-hop: INTL: 10.7% | JP: 8.3%
With numbers, we can see that:
34.8% of International respondents listen to either Japanese or Western hip-hop. 65.2% of International respondents do not listen to hip-hop.
These numbers seem to match up with the later results that show that 79% of respondents to not listen to J hip-hop artists outside of HypMic and 69% of respondents do not listen to/could list Western hip-hop artists at all.
59.7% of Japanese respondents listen to either Japanese or Western hip-hop. 40.3% of Japanese respondents do not listen to hip-hop.
From these results, we can see that there is most likely accounts of piracy due to the high numbers of International fans that have seen the stage play or read the manga in comparison to Japanese fans.

My ‘sweetest’ Favorite 2018

DIVERSITY IN SEATTLE THEATRE, NOV/DEC 2017
One last look at the year.
1. By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, UW Drama, Lynn Nottage, dir. Timothy Bond. Race-specific and casted accordingly.
2. The Government Inspector, Seattle Shakespeare, Jeffry Hatcher/Nikolai Gogol, dir. Allison Narver. Diversely-cast. This was totally hysterical.
3. Blood Makes Noise (reading), Pork Filled Productions, Kuan Foo, dir. May Nguyen Lee. Diversely-cast.
4. Dawn of the She-Devil of the China Seas (reading), Pork Filled Productions, Roger Tang, dir. Linnea Ingalls.
5. She is Fierce, solo works by female-identifying visual and performing artists, curated by Linnea Ingalls and Cessa Betancourt (I think). Diverse.
6. The Nance, Artswest, Douglas Carter Beane, dir. Mathew Wright. Pretty white, except for Jasmine Jean Sim.
7. Ballad of the White Tiger, NCTC Pipeline, Keiko Green, dir. MJ Sieber. Race-specific, that is, half-Asian. This is deliberate. I note, not for the first time, that Josh Kenji is so ridiculously good-looking it’s almost distracting.
8. It Will Be Now, Wyrd Sisters, Meghan Dolbey and Meme Garcia, dir. Wiley Basho Gorn. Two solo works. There aren’t words for how beautiful this was.
9. The Seagull (filmed), Satirikon Theatre, Anton Chekhov, dir. Yury Butusov. Pretty white. Well, Russians.
10. Every 28 Hours (reading), The Hansberry Project/CD Forum for Arts and Ideas, dir. Valerie Curtis Newton. This is a series of something like 100 one-minute plays about race. Most of the cast is black.
11. Secret and Impossible League of the Noösphere and the Baltimore Plot, Live Girls!, Darian Lindle, dir. Meghan Arnette. Non-race-specific, mostly white. I loved this but I could not for the life of me remember the title, which made it really difficult to recommend it to other people. I think many people had this problem.
12. Monstrosity, UW Drama, Lucy Thurber, dir. Samie Spring Detzer. Diversely-cast. I think, because this is a student production, there is also some gender-swapping, but I can’t be sure. This was wild and electric and totally insane.
13. A Christmas Carol, ACT, Gregory Falls, dir. Emily Penick. This is always diversely-cast, but this is the first time I can recall that a black actor was cast as Scrooge. They always cast two actors as Scrooge, so they had to double-up the casting for Young Scrooge and Even Younger Scrooge, which always works out anyway because you need a lot of young and child actors. Having a Black Scrooge totally pivots that early scene when Scrooge berates his quivering, shivering, overworked and verbally abused sole employee, Bob Cratchit.
14. The Christians (reading), Thalia’s Umbrella, Lucas Hnath, dir. Kathryn Stewart. Diversely-cast.
15. The Humans, Seattle Rep, Stephen Karam, dir. Joe Mantello. As far as I can tell, non-race-specific. Mostly white. One actor wasn’t white. Otherwise it was really white.
16. Buzzfeed IRL, The Horse in Motion, multiple artists and disciplines, diverse.
17. Wonderful Life, 14/48 Projects, dir. Shawn Belyea (plus assistant directors). Diversely-cast. I’ve never seen this before, but the concept is that NOBODY knows who is in the cast except for the directors. Each performer rehearses with the directors alone. They can only tell one person. When it’s their cue, they stand up from wherever they are sitting in the audience, speak their first words, and then join everyone else onstage. It’s amazing.
18. The Flight Before Christmas, SPT, Maggie Lee, dir. Amy Poisson. Diversely-cast.
19. Christmastown, SPT, Wayne Rawley, dir. Kelly Kitchens. I mean, it could be more diversely cast, but then it IS Pilar O’Connell playing the femme fatale in full glory, so I let this one slide.
20. Howl’s Moving Castle, Book-It, Myra Platt (script) and Justin Huertas (music & lyrics), dir. Myra Platt with movement work from Table Flip. Holy shit holy shit holy shit I mean seriously SARA. PORKALOB. Also the cast was diverse as fuck and amazing as hell and I cried and also Michael Feldman is hot like whoa.
21. Artswest Holiday Cast Party, Artswest, Mathew Wright. This was part of a series with each night a different pair of performers coming in to sing a few Christmas carols and talk about themselves and since this was Justin Huertas and Ben Gonio, I totally had to check it out.
22. Ham for the Holidays, ACT, Peggy Platt and Lisa Koch. They have a comedy duo called Dos Fallopia and every year they have a show with about eight skits. It’s pretty white. But funny.
23. Snowflakes, Sandbox Radio/ACT. This is an ongoing radio-style podcast that’s recorded live, with music and sound effects made by actual humans and short plays and works written by various writers. Mostly white.

Will Texas and Texas A&M play again? The post-breakup tracker
Realignment broke up one of college football's greatest hate-relationships, but the two won't stop eying each other. Let's keep track as they work their way to meeting up again. Last updated Oct. 26.
Texas and Texas A&M. It's a relationship that goes way back, but after an ugly conference realignment breakup, the two just can't seem to get back on the same page.
Here's a timeline of their trials and tribulations since splitting apart.
Oct. 25, 2017
The governor wants to get involved.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott: "My next goal as governor is to reunite the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry. Hook 'em Horns."
— Brian Davis (@BDavisAAS) October 25, 2017
THE HEAT SCALE, rating the flirtatious energy between Texas and A&M: 2, because the governor isn’t in charge here. Just because an ex-couple’s parents badly want them to get back together doesn’t mean the kids will go along with it.
July 17, 2017
Texas' new head coach is on board!
Tom Herman on scheduling: "We don't play a rival at home ever. I don't know why we can't play A&M as our marquee non-conference opponent."
— Brian Davis (@BDavisAAS) July 18, 2017
THE HEAT SCALE: 4. Texas' old head coach was also on board, and look where that got us.
June 28, 2017
"Their AD (DeLoss Dodds) at the time came out and said we will never play Texas A&M again, and they worked along with Baylor and the conference to have no one in the (Big 12) schedule us," former A&M AD Greg Byrne said. "There were other forces at work to make sure we didn't play."
THE HEAT SCALE: 4. That story has a bunch of disheartening stuff on this rivalry and Kansas-Missouri, but that particular quote is at least hot.
June 16, 2017
"Me, personally? I think over the course of time that's going to happen," A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin said when asked, while also talking about how well he knows new Horns coach Tom Herman. "With our move to the SEC, scheduling has become a real issue."
THE HEAT SCALE: 3. Sumlin's been predicting a reunion for years now, not that we don't appreciate him doing so.
June 10, 2016
"They're trying to work something out right now where we're going to play the Aggies," Charlie Strong said at an event. A Texas spokesman said no specifics have been discussed, but we didn't even hear any of the words in this second sentence.
THE HEAT SCALE: 8. Do it.Texas and Texas A&M. It's a relationship that goes way back, but after an ugly conference realignment breakup, the two just can't seem to get back on the same page.
April 14, 2016
A&M athletic director Scott Woodward, via DailyTrib.com in Texas:
Will the Aggies play the University of Texas in football again?
"We have to really assess what is our best path to winning the (Southeastern Conference) West," Woodward said. "I don't foresee anything happening in the near future. There are a lot of opinions well above my pay grade. Rivalries, I think, are healthy for the game.
"It'll be something we'll consider," he added. "It'll be a discussion I'll have to have. I have no objection to it. It's something that has to work for us and for folks."
HEAT SCALE: 5.
March 19, 2016
The two nearly played again in March Madness, but Texas had to go and lose to Northern Iowa on a buzzer beater. Aggies everywhere were torn between laughing at rivals and lamenting the chance to square off, but the likely A&M starting QB had the definitive opinion:
lol http://pic.twitter.com/S95xNzXEfi
— Jake Hubenak (@hubenak_j) March 19, 2016
HEAT SCALE: Unchanged. Laughing at your fallen rival is standard human behavior.
September 30, 2015
Texas A&M regent Tony Buzbee in a Facebook post, via the Austin American-Statesman:
I am going to advocate that the Aggies play Texas again in the near future. Because of our brutal SEC West schedule [...], the Aggies need some cupcake games to rest and heal. In my view, Texas is just as weak if not weaker than the non-conference games we play, so we may as well play them.
