I'm usually good at accepting criticism for books and medias I enjoy, especially since I 1. mostly love old things so can realize how problematic or outdated on some levels they can be 2. have been trained to reflect on and interpret works of literature and art.
But when it comes to Notre-Dame de Paris the musical I just can't take it. The original French version is my entire childhood (/life I guess i've been watching it and listening to it for twenty years) and I know it has flaws I just can't take them into consideration because it's overall so perfect. The text is a fucking work of art and it is even more so when you read the book in French and get the echoes between the lyrics and the book. I guess it's lost in other languages adaptations but you can really feel how hard Plamondon worked on this. The cast omg. No other actor can compare, especially to Garou as Quasimodo, Mervil as Clopin and Lavoie as Frollo I'm sorry. Love that it is also the most minimalist version in terms of make-up and sets idk
I just have such strong feelings about this sorry gonna rewatch it now it's time byyyye

Le temps des cathédrales
On my birthday (August 3rd), I went to see Notre-Dame-de-Paris with my mom and sister at la Place des arts. As someone who's been listening to it since 1998 (and read the novel later), it truly felt like I've missed out on seeing it live, especially since I saw the biggest France/Québec musicals from the early 2000s when they came out (namely, Roméo et Juliette, Don Juan and Dracula), as well as Starmania (not when it came out, obviously). Even though the current Notre-Dame-de-Paris show isn't with the original cast (except for Daniel Lavoie!), it was really amazing.
Of course, me being me, I did a themed outfit.
Outfit rundown Dress: second-hand Moi-même-Moitié Bustier: second-hand Victorian Maiden Blouse: La petite garçonne Bag: second-hand Moi-même-Moitié Shoes: Yosuke Headdress: handmade by me Jewellery: mix of vintage, Design Festa, second-hand Moi-même-Moitié and thrifted

Starmania 1993
This is the first version of the show created without Michel Berger
Performed from 1993 to 2001 at the Théâtre Mogador, then at the Palais des Congrès to continue at the Palais des Sports and finish at the Casino de Paris, we can almost say that it is a traveling show !
The show will have a 50-50 success, part of the public will adore it while the other will simply hate it (the costumes considered ugly and a staging bordering on the psychedelic, some critics will even say that this version was a betrayal / a bad parody of the original work)
The album :
The particularity of the show was the possibility of choosing the language ! In English on Friday and French the rest of the week !
DISTRIBUTION :
Johnny Rockfort :
Bruno Pelletier (1993 - 1995)
Norman Groulx ( 1995 - 1999)
Frank Sherbourne ( 1999 - 2001)
Tumblr media
Cristal :
Judith Bérard ( 1993 - 1996)
Edith Fortin ( 1996 - 2001)

Isabelle Boulay ( 1995 - 1997)
Joane Labelle ( 1998 - 1999)

ANECDOTES :
For the first time Roger Roger is no longer a human character, he is now a robot with the voice of Muriel Robin in French and Tim Rice in English
...
In this version Zero Janvier murders Cristal by strangling her with his own hands !
...
For the first time the auditions for the role of Sadia were open to men !! ( We are now in 2024 and Sadia still has not had a male interpreter )
...
Andy Cocq and Eric Melville were spotted by Plamondon when they both auditioned for Notre Dame de Paris !
...
Andy Cocq is one of the big names in the world of French musicals, having played in Emilie Jolie 2002, le Soldat Rose , Doty et le magicien d'Oz , and in the French adaptations of Spamlot and the Producers ( which I had the chance to see at the Paris theater in 2022 )
Tumblr media
...
Luce Dufault is the only performer in the history of Starmania to have performed on stage while she was 6 months pregnant !
...
Technical accident occurred at the Mogador when Bruno Pelletier's long hair was found stuck while he was suspended in the air and had to go down on stage roped up ! The show stopped and Plamondon himself came on stage to reassure the audience ; in his own words : " a black star must be able to face any eventuality ! "
...
In 1995, Stella Spotlight's slide dress hit the stage…without Patsy Gallant! The performer had gone backstage to quench her thirst and had forgotten that she had to make a short appearance on stage just before the businessman's blues …
For more Starmania or to discover other French musicals I invite you to follow the path of my main masterlist to learn more about French musicals and their stories :

I was listening to the song tu vas me détruire from the French musical Notre Dame de Paris (1998), and this song makes me think so much about Jegulus, for me it fits them perfectly.
Here is some parts of the lyrics in English:
This ocean of passion
Breaking through my veins
Causing my irrationality
My disarray and my bad luck
I'll slowly dive into it
With no hand holding me back
I'll slowly drown myself into it
Without feeling any remorse
You will destroy me
You will destroy me
And I shall curse you
Until the end of my life
You will destroy me
You will destroy me
I could have foretold that
From the very first day,
From the very first night
You will destroy me
My sin, my obsession
Wild desire tormenting me
Making a mockery of me
Tearing me part and haunting me
Little illusions dealer
I live but in the expectation
Of seeing your petticoat getting blown up
And of you to dance and sing
You will destroy me
You will destroy me
And I shall curse you
Until the end of my life
You will destroy me
You will destroy me
I could have foretold that
From the very first day,
From the very first night
You will destroy me

I can't believe my luck.
Maxim sang "Belle" from Notre Dame de Paris at a concert a while ago. I loved the song, so I checked out the original and loved it even more. Then I started watching the 1998 recording two days ago and now I'm obsessed. My favourite character is Gringoire.
So. Yesterday I found out that Maxim was in a Russian production of the show. I hadn't made the connection before because the Russian musical is called Times of the Cathedrals, not Notre Dame de Paris or sth like it - it became clear to me while listening to NDDP's opening ("Le temps des cathédrales"). Maxim played PIERRE GRINGOIRE. And there's a PROFESSIONAL RECORDING. Available on BOOSTY.
Sometimes things just fall into place :')

“Eglise Notre-Dame de l’Arche d’Alliance / Our Lady of the Ark of the Covenant Church”, Rue d'Alleray 81, 75015, Paris, France [1986-1998] _ Architects: Architecture-Studio (AS).
“The building, designed to accommodate 450 congregants, the presbytery and other significant parish facilities, is located on a very small plot of land, a short walk from Place Falguière. In this tiny plot, Our Lady of the Ark of the Covenant reinterprets the symbolism of the scriptural and structural tradition in a contemporary narrative. The Church pervades the context in the shape of a perfect cube, supported on twelve pillars that portray the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles. ‘With its six even sides, the cube is a perfect challenge of idol-worship: the first side is the forecourt, four sides reveal the church to the city around it, while the last side, high up, is a cloister, open to the sky’. The church plan outlines a Greek cross with four equal branches, recalling the most ancient Eastern church.
Historically, the Ark of the Covenant contained the two stone Tablets of the Law given by God at Sinai, in a gold-plated acacia wooden chest. Thus, the building is seen as a box inside a three-dimensional square-patterned metal grid, which defines the three masses of the building: the bell tower, the portal and the church. The free movement of the air and the transparency that it creates confer an immaterial and liturgical presence to the whole. ‘Here, the space creates a silent relationship between our private solitude and the call to join the cohesiveness of shapes that makes us equal’ (F. Boyer). On the right, the stained glass windows portraying David dancing in front of the Ark of the Covenant, and on the left, the scene of the Visitation of Mary to Elisabeth, are the work of Martial Raysse and were crafted by Master Glassmaker, Jean Dominique Fleury.”

Belle, c’est un mot qu’on dirait inventé pour elle
...
Ô, laisse-moi rien qu’une fois glisser mes doigts dans les cheveux d’Esmeralda
Belle by Garou in Notre-Dame de Paris, 1998
——
Luke felt another jolt rip through his body as he stepped closer to Julie, her eyes shining with tears as she begged him to save himself. And although he would do anything for her, leaving her willingly is something he could never do.
His eyes roam her face, tracing what his fingers itch to brush. The soft caramel skin framed by black curls cascading all around calls to him in a way he never thought was possible.
He mourns the dream of ever being able to experience that feeling.
As he takes in her features for what he knows will be the last time, his eyes linger on her lips - lips always tilted into a special smile aimed only at him; a shape so familiar he thinks it might have been his home in another life.
He slides his gaze above her lips as he takes in the sight of her cheeks, that urge to hold her nearly eclipsing the jolt rocking through him once more. He pictures his hands cradling her cheeks, swiping his thumbs across her cheekbones as she scrunches her nose at him with a smile that would make him dizzy.
Not wanting to stall any longer, his eyes tick upwards and finally meet hers again. He can see himself reflected in them, see the love and pain and sadness and frustration. He can see the beauty of the world held within them, and it pains him to know he will never have access to them again.
He shakes his head minutely at the thought, dislodging the negativity as he tries to focus on the girl in front of him, revelling in her beauty once more.
And just as he feels what he knows will be the final jolt that takes him away from her, he smiles at the last thought that crosses his mind.
Beautiful is a word that must have been invented with the sole intention of describing her, his Julie.
He closes his eyes one last time and allows the darkness to pull him away.
