I keep thinking about something John Green said about modern and/or abstract art. He compared it to instrumental music and how it doesn't need to represent anything specific (I mean it can, like peter and the wolf is great, but it doesn't have to). And for some reason that seems easier for people to comprehend.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" sounds cliche and vacuous, but it's extremely important. There's someone out there that will be moved deeply by seeing a huge canvas with a straight orange line and if it's not you then go stare at the cultural rorschach test that speaks to you more.
