|| Modern!Norton Campbell x reader FLUFF ||
Summary: Being stuck in an elevator would suck, but maybe not this time.
Word Count:
(A/n: i'm so bad at writing fluff, kinda my first time doing this. Also sorry for the bad paragraphings kekekeke)
fluff under the cut!
Late isn't a new word for the girl who's running down the halls of the building, time always seemed to slip through the fingers of the girl, sprinting across the halls with outstanding achievements, certificates and awards for how amazing the company is, making her feel smaller for being too late for everything, adding more weight to her shoulders and of course, guilty feeling.
The girl works at a heightened place and as today, an unconvinient meeting was unfortunately held at the 28th floor of the building. Stairs wouldn't do any justice, every ascending steps was a challenge, each floor being a massive excercise for the girl.
Surveying her surrounding for at least a teeny assistance, she turnes her attention towards the conviniently available employee elevator, rushing inside and without hesitation, pressed the 28th floor.
Muttering a silent 'yes', the metal door started to close, at the same exact moment, a resonant voice pierced from the other side, "Hey! Hold on!". The girl's hand darted up to the 'open' button, revealing a curly haired ravenette popping out from the door, muttering a 'thank you', bowing slightly.
someone who doesn't look like they're from here nor belong here, she noted.
The guy had multiple prominent features. He was tall, preassumably 6 foot, a charming face too. His shoulders was broad, holding a messanger leather bag, and last but not least a deep crimson scar smeared across his face.
but you dont see that face everyday, especially in an office like this, she continued her thoughts, brushing them away soon after.
He shifted his gaze towards the panel of buttons situated on the elevator's right side. His eyes slightly widened in surprise as he noticed that the button for the 28th floor was already lit from the girl standing silently next to him. He pulled his hands back, the door finally closing fully with a faint hum.
The elevator moved at a sluggish pace, frequently used multiple times by employees indifferent to punctuality. As the metal box approached the 17th floor. The lights flickered erratically before fading away into the darkness, turning the emergency lights on. The elevator came into an abrupt halt as it was ascending towards the desired number.
Startled, the occupants inside hastily reached for the emergency evacuation button, only to find it unresponsive, adding to their growing sense of unease.
"The one day I can use the elevator, seriously?" the girl muttered under her breath, signing her stroke of misfortune, looking at her mobile with an 'x' on the corner top of her screen next to the battery numerals, signaling how there was barely any service available for contact.
The raven-haired man let out a deep sigh, equally unsure of what to do in their befalling situation, slouching at their respective corners of the elevator, a shared silence settling between them. After a few moments of idle contemplation, the man decided to break the suspension.
"I'm Norton, what's yours?" he questioned, his tone warm and inviting as he extended his hand towards the girl. With a hint of hesitation, she reciprocated the gesture, offering a small smile as they shook hands. "I'm [Name], nice to meet you," she replied, preassumably making friends in such situations.
Norton chuckled lightly, a glimmer of amusement in his eyes. "Do you rarely use the elevator? I overheard your frustration earlier," he remarked, noting the slight curse she mentioned under her breath a few minutes before. The girl nodded, a wry smile playing at the corners of her lips. "Yeah, I usually take the stairs since my office is only on the 4th floor. Climbing 28 floors just for a meeting didn't seem worth the effort," she explained, a touch of sarcasm coloring her words.
In the confined space of the elevator, their laughter with moments of shared stories as they recounted their experiences within their lives. As the conversation unfolded, it became apparent that the man was really not from here.
could be a new guy, maybe someone applying for a position? his attire seems familiar but definitely not our company's, she thought to herself.
Minutes stretched into moments of connection, each exchange filling the air with warmth, even the girl was surprised at how easily they connected, playing a couple rounds of would-you-rather questions, distracting them from the misfortunes of their situation.
Amidst the laughter, the girl ranted her frustation upon working a corporate job, mentioning the relentless demands of work as multiple deadlines and responsibilities were covering her already tight schedule. She spoke of simple pleasures, like treating herself to dinner or maybe enjoying a calming night-ride over the city. Norton chuckled at the notion, thinking how that would put his mind off from his piling work too.
As the hours passed in their unexpected situation, the distant echo of footsteps of arrival from the safety department can be heared, their reassuring presence signaling an end to their captivity. With a mixture of relief and disappointment, they exhaled.
The girl offered a slight bow, expressing her gratitude for the stories and time. With a hurried farewell, she dashed towards the meeting, her heart subtly racing with the hope of salvaging what remained of her time, only to learn that the anticipated meeting had been called off.
At the lobby, amidst the flow of chatters and ongoing activities, she encountered Norton once more. With a light tap on his shoulder, she greeted him with a cheerful hello. And so, in the fleeting moments before leaving once more, they engaged in yet another conversation.
"Would you be interested in a dinner with me? Just the two of us", He asked, a slight smile gracing his lips.
"So like... a date?". the girl quipped, a playful laughter escaped her lips.
"I suppose you could call it that", He answered, his tone filled with sincerity, "I'd like to know you better".
"haha, alright then, it's a date", her face filles with warmth yet a glint of joy can be seen from her eyes.
The girl supposedly felt satisfied with today. She reached down the pockets of her jacket, her fingers brushed on a small namecard that was left, It was his.
Norton Campbell, she muttered.
In that fleeting moment, the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. He was THE Norton Campbell, the important figure whose absence had cancelled today's meeting. With a deep breath, she straightened her posture, examining the namecard once more.
Once again, something felt familiar. Moments before she noticed the missing puzzle piece. THE Norton Campbell, the important person holding the meeting today, the important person who didn't arrive at the meeting, that's why it was cancelled. She exhaled deeply, straightening her shoulders back up as she read the namecard once again.
Dinner at 8 on Friday, I'll pick you up cutie ;), just text me ur address later, the words on the back of the card read.
A flush of warmth spread across her cheeks once again as she grappled with the reality of the situation. HOW could such a man exist, let alone take an interest in her? Yet, there he was, offering an invitation to an evening she couldn't help but look forward to.

As United States Postal Service letter carriers face increasing violence and assaults on the job, the police officers who could protect them have been sidelined by the government, a new Raw Story investigation revealed.
With letter carrier robberies skyrocketing by 543 percent between 2019 and 2022, the issue has spurred a bipartisan group of Congress members to introduce legislation aimed at providing more secure mailbox equipment and better protecting letter carriers.
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), who introduced the Protect our Letter Carriers Act last week, said Raw Story's investigation should urge Congress to turn the bill into law.
“The concerns highlighted in this story only increase the urgency needed in Congress to pass the bipartisan Protect our Letter Carriers Act," Fitzpatrick said in a statement to Raw Story. "The United States Postal Service must have the resources to update its outdated arrow keys and harden mailboxes. We must also increase the prosecution and lengthen sentences of individuals arrested for assaulting and robbing letter carriers. I will do whatever is necessary to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass this crucial piece of legislation.”
A 2020 statute reinterpretation by the Postal Service curtailed uniformed postal police officers' ability to patrol the streets where mail crimes typically occur, restricting them to working on postal property such as post offices and distribution centers. Meanwhile, the number of postal police officers overall has shrunk from a high of more than 2,600 in the 1970s to about 450 officers today.
In a phone interview with Raw Story, Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said mail theft is "rampant" in her district and is an issue she's heard about across the country from her colleagues. Postal police officers aren't currently "doing any good being confined to postal property," Norton said.
"The spike in mail crime only reinforces my notion that we need to have postal police go wherever the crime is," Norton said.
If postal police officers began patrolling the streets again, there would be "a better chance of restricting crimes for the Postal Service," said Norton, who is a co-sponsor of the House version of the Postal Police Reform Act alongside Reps. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), Ken Calvert (R-CA) and Bill Pascrell (D-NJ).
Calvert himself lost nearly $10,000 in campaign cash last year because of mail theft, Raw Story first reported.
"I think the bill has a good chance of passing not only because of what we're experiencing in the district but because this issue is nationwide," Norton said.
There's a Senate version of the Postal Police Reform Act, as well, introduced by Sens. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Susan Collins (R-ME), along with 10 other co-sponsors, including Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD).
“Postal carriers routinely deliver lifelines to Marylanders and others across the country. They should not be left vulnerable to dangerous situations that leave them and mail recipients in potential danger – from theft and the lost items," Cardin told Raw Story in a statement. "This is a growing problem that Congress should address, preferably in partnership with the USPS.”

WA Watch: Asteroid City (2023)
Watched: 07/11/2023
Format: Amazon Prime
Viewing: First
Director: Wes Anderson
So, I was as surprised as anyone else when I looked at Amazon to ponder watching something and up popped the new Wes Anderson movie, Asteroid City (2023). We don't get out to the theater like we used to, so I was a bit bummed that I wouldn't probably prioritize this with so much else coming out/ lack of time/ lack of money in this economy, etc...
Anyway, apparently I'd also been socking away "credits" on Amazon for purchase of digital services, like movies, so although the movie was pricey to rent or buy vs., say, free or $3.99 for something else, I basically paid nothing for it and now have a digital copy, so... go me, I guess.
It's a curious period to be watching a Wes Anderson movie. Film Twitter has basically just decided that liking anything is bad, and Wes Anderson is nothing but a collection of well mannered tricks, both visual and in his direction of actors. That's plainly reductionist and a take I can't take seriously.
Asteroid City may be the most ambitious Anderson film to date, carrying with it all of the lessons of the prior entries I've seen (which is not all of them). Framed as a documentary about a play from the very complicated 1950's which also shows the leads of that play recreating the play, the film is communicating on a multitude of levels - with the story of what an imaginary playwright (played by Edward Norton) told about a group of people who have come to a remote locale in the desert for a science camp for teen-sci-fi-geniuses. I won't get into the issues of the far more normal adults, but they have them. And then an alien shows up.
But the story Anderson is telling folds in on itself. This is a dramatized telling of how that play came to be.
It's a movie that challenges with everything it says and does - from consideration of the careers of the characters in the play, to the concept of the cosmos, to what it means to have a world-changing event happen right in front of you. Especially to a photographer (who is paid to observe and not participate) and an actress who knows how to play emotions more than experience them. But it's also a movie that feels almost primordial in its location, and some of its allusions. But, of course, there's a play that has to be acted and completed and understood, and you get the feeling the third layer is Anderson himself, commenting and commenting upon the creation of his work, upon the seeming meaninglessness of it to some, to what it means to make illusions and share them.
More so than even usual, the film is absolutely littered with recognizable name talent in innumerable roles, including walk on parts. Sure, you have Jason Schwartzman - honestly the best I've ever seen him- and Scarlett Johansson as a mix of a number of Hollywood stars of the 1950's, but an original character altogether. Tom Hanks plays a minor role as a sonuvabitch father-in-law. But then there's Hope Davis in a scene with five lines. And Jeff Goldblum in a faceless, voiceless role. The IMDB on this is nuts, but we're also now getting the movies that were made during the pandemic when folks had @#$%-all else to go do.
As always, Anderson gets how just a few things can be hysterical. Kids, for example. Or a line delivered just so. The right visual gag like a dancing road runner.
But, god, this movie is gorgeous. And, I think, shot on Kodak.
I'll need to watch it again. It practically begs for it, but in a way that doesn't feel like homework, like "oh, you need to rewatch it to get it". Nah, it's easy enough to get. But it seems like a rewatch would be deeply rewarding, and - of course - give you time and brain space to appreciate what's there all the more.
But, yeah. I know there's plenty out there who will focus on the very quotable lines or the visual gags, but, man... you have to appreciate how astoundingly well crafted this movie is on every level.

Looking ahead to 2023 in Jennaland
Jenna Coleman in Klokkenluider.
---
With the new year just a week or so old, I thought I’d give a quick overview (and some thoughts) on what 2023 is starting to look like for Jenna Coleman. After a fairly quiet couple of years (due to C19), Jenna had a pretty busy 2022 and 2023 is looking set to include the payoff of some of that work (some speculation follows - obviously I stand to be corrected). While she certainly isn’t as prolific as David Tennant (who seems to have a new show coming out every month), she’s got a busy year ahead. Spoiler break here for length:
Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons
First out of the gate, of course, is Jenna’s second West End play, co-starring Aiden Turner, which opens later this month. The romantic play set in a world where people only have a set number of words to speak each day, sounds like something Rod Serling might have come up with in a romantic mood. Unfortunately, for fans outside the UK and without the resources to get there, the play’s run (in London and other cities) is, sadly, out of reach. This was also the case with Jenna’s 2019 run in All My Sons, however National Theatre Live came to rescue by arranging a worldwide cinema stream (later included on their home service during C19), which allowed many of us to see it, so the hope is NTL will do the same here. As of right now there’s been no word, however NTL often doesn’t announce screenings until late in a play’s run for obvious reasons (see, for example, the stream of Jodie Comer’s Prima Facae, which came near the end of the run, and All My Son’s stream was also announced pretty late), so fingers are crossed fans outside the UK will be able to see Jenna’s performance too sometime in the spring.
Klokkenluider
Outside of some film festival screenings last fall, Klokkenluider (filmed in early 2021) has yet to be properly released though it’s assumed it will happen sometime this year. Aside from its rather non-commercial title, I can’t see this getting a very wide cinema release outside of the UK. Most of us will probably see it on a streaming service. We do know Jenna’s role is relatively small in the film, but advance reviews have pretty much called her the highlight of the movie, even if the novelty of Jenna Coleman going all Malcolm Tucker in the swearing department was taken already by her turn in Sandman. A trailer has yet to be released as of Jan. 9 too.
Wilderness
Jenna filmed this 8-episode thriller miniseries for Amazon Prime last summer. No release date has been announced yet, but again 2023 is assumed and if I was asked to make a bet I’d say probably summer. (If it were spring I think Amazon would have already announced it by now; as of Jan. 9 no trailer has been released for it either, supporting the notion of a post-spring release). If the show follows the novel, the entire series will likely be from Jenna’s character’s point of view so there’s no doubt she’ll be the lead in this one.
Jackdaw
A bona fide mystery, Jenna apparently filmed her role in this film just before the Christmas break, possibly in the midst of rehearsing for Lemons. (We don’t yet know if Jenna dyed her hair blonde for the play or for the film). All we know about the film is from what has been posted on social media. Despite one post indicating it’s a Netflix production (yet at the same time calling it an independent) there has been zero media coverage of this, tabloids seem to think Jenna going blonde was a lifestyle choice rather than something she did for work, and Jenna herself has made no mention of it (other than a couple of Instagram images that by themselves gave no indication they relate to a film production); Graham Norton didn’t even bring it up during the recent Virgin Radio show. All we can do is guess. All we know for sure is part of it involves a party or rave, motorcycles are involved and Jenna apparently had a stunt double. No idea when we might see this or where. It’s also unconfirmed if Jackdaw is the actual title or another “Blue Harvest” (the fake title used during filming of Return of the Jedi).
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 DLC
Jenna provides the English voice of Melia in this video game series. Although X3, released last year, was reportedly the conclusion of the series, the makers have announced a game expansion is planned for release possibly in late 2023. Whether it features additional Jenna voiceover work remains to be seen.
---
Those are the (mostly) confirmed projects Jenna has in store this year, all anticipated for release at some point in 2023. It’s somewhat depressing to realize virtually nothing Jenna is currently or recently involved in will likely get a permanent physical media release; The Serpent isn’t getting a North American DVD or Blu-ray so the UK release could well be the final (legal) permanent media release to feature her, while for North America you pretty much have to go back to Victoria Series 3 and The Cry. There have been rare Netflix releases on DVD though so I’m hopeful Sandman Season 1 will be one of them.
There are also a few more projects that have been connected to Jenna - through media or by way of speculation - but remain question marks.
Sandman Season 2
The Sandman was renewed last fall for a second season, but there’s been no word as to when production will begin. Although Jenna’s version of Constantine was insanely popular, and media have made assumptions she’ll return for Season 2 (with Jenna herself basically saying “I’m in” in her social media), this has yet to be confirmed and those familiar with the Sandman storylines have cast doubt we’ll see her very much in Season 2, if at all. Of course, Neil Gaiman made some substantial changes to his story in order to get it on screen (making Constantine female being one example), so he could come up with a way to give Johanna a bit more presence in Season 2. Either way, if Jenna is involved, she won’t be filming till later in the year and the season itself may not be released until 2024 depending on when production starts in 2023. Speculation of a Johanna Constantine spin-off is just that - there’s been zero indication this will happen (the competing John Constantine productions that led to Jenna playing Johanna don’t help). If it does, that’s something for 2024 if not beyond as Gaiman’s first priority will be Sandman.
The War Games
Way back in the spring of 2021 it was announced Jenna would produce and star in a multi-season series based on the exploits of one of Ian Fleming’s lovers who allegedly inspired Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond novels. Since then, nothing. Some have suggested the project must be dead but Jenna herself said at a panel last fall it’s still in the planning stages, which likely means development hell, though with Jenna involved in Wilderness, Sandman, and now the Lemons play it’s possible she’s just been too busy. Fingers crossed we’ll get an update on this before too long. I wouldn’t call it impossible that production might someday proceed with Jenna as a producer but not starring, too.
Victoria Season 4/special?
In the “longshot” category I present the fact that Victoria has apparently not been cancelled and Daisy Goodwin said on her Instagram several years ago that she’d written scripts for a 4th series. Since Series 3 ended on a cliffhanger, there is an opening to at least do a one-off special if not a full season (many UK shows have concluded with one-offs), and Jenna has said she’s willing to return, even as she’s acknowledged someone else will likely have to play the role if the show covers Victoria’s later years. The fact she and Tom Hughes are no longer a couple shouldn’t have an impact (many exes continue to work together, and they could always recast Albert especially if the show does a time jump). And UK shows are known to go years sometimes between seasons (see Red Dwarf and Waterloo Road and even Doctor Who for examples). Unless Jenna, Daisy or someone else says definitively “it’s done” (or Jenna says she’s not interested in returning) this is still a possible going concern.
Doctor Who?
Jenna has been adamant she has no interest in returning to Doctor Who, not even to do audios for Big Finish. But we’ve heard this before (most notably from Tom Baker). I will not make any bets on her returning, but until the 60th has come and gone, who knows? (Plus if RTD if truly trying to put the old band together behind the scenes and he’s able to talk Moffat into writing again, you never know - though he’s probably more likely to write something about River Song or maybe Bill Potts (who admittedly got pretty much shortchanged).
---
To conclude, I repeat that any speculation I give here (like with Doctor Who just now) is just that. I fully expect that events will prove speculation wrong. The exciting thing of course is the possibility of something unexpected coming along, like an audio book, or a film or a TV guest appearance. (A month ago no one had ever heard of Jackdaw.) So the year in review counterpart to this could well have some additional excitement!

When the opportunity presents itself, Sade, who has been appointed a judge in his revolutionary section, does not sentence his in-laws to death. Suspected of moderation and royalist sympathies, Sade is arrested in December.
1794: Sade escapes death owing to a bureaucratic error, and is eventually released at the end of the Terror, following the fall and execution of Robespierre.
1795: Penniless owing to the loss of his lands and property in the Revolution, Sade tries to stage more plays. Publishes Aline and Valcour, and, anonymously, Philosophy in the Boudoir.
1799: Anonymous publication of The New Justine, or the Misfortunes of Virtue, followed by The History of Juliette, her Sister, or the Prosperities of Vice, and publication in Sade’s own name of The Crimes of Love. Works as a prompt in a Versailles theatre for 40 sous a day.
1801: Sade arrested at his publishers in April for authorship of ‘obscene’ writings, and imprisoned at Sainte-Pélagie.
1803: Transferred to Bicêtre, then to Charenton.
1804: Sade’s continued detention justified by the invention of a new medical condition, ‘libertine dementia’.
1807: Confiscation of the libertine novel The Days at Florbelle, or Nature unveiled, begun in 1804. The manuscript will be destroyed at the behest of his younger son after his death.
1808: Organizes theatrical performances, using asylum inmates and professional actresses.
1812-13: Writes Adelaide of Brunswick, Princess of Saxony, The Secret History of Isabelle of Bavaria and The Marquis de Gange, all conventional historical novels.
1813-14: Affair with the sixteen-year-old laundry-maid Madeleine Leclerc.
1814 2 December: Sade’s death, followed by interment in the Charenton cemetery with full religious rites.

Exploring Preschool Liverpool: Top Child Care Choices for Your Family
When it comes to selecting a preschool, that in my opinion is one of the most important decisions that parents can make for their child. This is the first center where your child starts their learning process and it has a number of contributions to the child’s growth and achievement in life. Liverpool, an active suburb in Sydney, presents a list of good quality Preschools and child care centers that has been developed with an intention of addressing the requirements of every family. In this article, we will review some of the leading child care providers in Liverpool, describe the differences between them and discuss how each center can benefit your child.
Preschool is not a day care center where children have to be left so that they should not be under parents' care; rather it is the first step in the education process. Early education fosters once social, emotional, cognitive and academic and a passion for education. Choosing the right preschool to enroll your child early plays a crucial role in a child's academic and social milieu achievement henceforth it is important to consider different factors while choosing the right program. childcare chipping norton

"Where all my friends reside ha! ha!" notes "E.M.Q" on a picture postcard of the Ohio State Reformatory.
Peering through the gate down the front drive.
The Ohio State Reformatory, Mansfield, OH. Some History, and the Residence.
Guests were told on tour that the Ohio State Reformatory building may very well owe its extended existence to director Frank Darabont, who arrived in the nick of time to prevent the institution's destruction.
The south facade of the Ohio State Reformatory at Mansfield, OH.
Preparing to film an adaptation of Stephen King's novella "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption," six months of location scouting culminated with the Ohio Film Commission pleading the case to Darabont at a convention for the production to come to Mansfield, OH, about 60 miles southwest of Cleveland. The building (built between 1886 and 1910) had been constructed to serve as a place to bring wayward young men back to the straight-and-narrow, but by the 1970s had fallen into disrepair.
High-minded architecture (above and below) was considered part of the moral uplift project.
Budget concerns had the state shifting the focus from reform to straight-up incarceration, and as prison populations grew in Ohio, Mansfield's facility was switched during the 1960s away from reform to maximum security.
The looming walls and barred windows of the housing section.
Inmates sued and won against the state for deplorable conditions, and it was ruled that the state had to provide better. Ironically, more money was taken from the decrepit Mansfield building while a newer facility was built adjacent.
A hallway in the residential/administrative wing: as was customary when built, the warden and his family as well as most of the corrections officers lived on-site. Today, in addition to visitor services and offices, there is also the official Ohio penitentiary museum, a cafe, and the ubiquitous gift shop (I bought a pair of trays like they used in the mess hall scenes - because of course I did).
Stained glass transom light in the residence hallway.
So the story is, after the inmates were moved to the new facility, and after Ohio and Castle Rock Entertainment had swung a deal for filming within the Reformatory, there was an apparent goof in the chain of command; arriving by rental car after flying in from Hollywood, director Darabont showed up on the grounds just before state contractors were to begin swinging their wrecking balls. Darabont's stepping in at that moment halted the demolition, and allowed the filming to proceed.
The warden's dining room in the residence.
As the saying goes, the rest is (film) history. Utilizing many of the rooms around the residence as well as filming out on the yard, Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption is on many "best" lists. Locations in Mansfield and the surrounding Ohio countryside subbed-in for the surrounding Maine environment.
Reception area outside the office used for Warden Norton in the film.
Subsequent to the movie (which was not a "hit" upon release) there was still debate about keeping the old prison, but a local non-profit, the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society, organized itself and began to stir up interest (and funding) to restore what many had thought to be a relic and an eye-sore. Who would tour an old prison?! Turns out, quite a number of people do, all the more so as Shawshank's reputation grew.
The residence after restoration; as much as possible, the original materials are retained; the floor, for instance, is original throughout.
As with many old buildings under the auspices of non-profits, work is by and large volunteer and on-going, and depends on subscription and tour fee monies for funding projects. Chatting with a docent about the work, done by people with passion for their jobs in his estimation, he told me that the society has over a million dollars lined up to restore one cell wing to its condition circa 1940. I'll admit my eyes went wide thinking of all the layers of lead paint that would need to be abated to do that -- 'cause the peeling walls are a nightmare.
A typical scene: missing plaster and decaying paint in a washroom.
Looking back up the main drive.
What remains after filming is the main structure; the "yard," where once stood the workshops surrounded by a 25 foot-high wall and agricultural fields beyond, were razed when the new Mansfield facility was constructed. There are no photos allowed that depict the new facility, even if through a window.
The yard: north of the main building (highlighted above) in this undated aerial shot (Ohio History Connection collection).
As part of the reform movement, the young men were expected to take part in what today would be called vocational training (they built furniture, for instance) as well as arts (there was a band), and agriculture (the incarcerated grew most of their own food and any surplus was sold). Many went on to lead fairly good lives after getting the equivalent of a high school education, and the recidivism rate was reported to be something like 25% or less -- compared to 50% or worse for other institutions. Not bad for the first half of the 20th Century.

OBLIGATIONS AND CONTRACTS
Article 1377. Civil Code of the Philippines
The interpretation of obscure words or stipulations in a contract shall not favor the party who caused the obscurity. (1288)
When the wording or stipulations in a contract are vague, the interpretation should not benefit the party responsible for the ambiguity. Instead, any doubt should be resolved against the interests of the party who introduced the unclear terms.
Norton v. All Asia
(G.R No. 162523, November 25, 2009)
Facts:
Norton Resources and Development Corporation (petitioner) obtained a loan of ₱3,800,000.00 from All Asia Bank Corporation (respondent) for the construction of 160 housing units. A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) included a commitment/service fee of ₱320,000.00. The petitioner constructed only 35 units and defaulted on the loan. Respondent called on the guarantor, Home Financing Corporation (HFC), which paid ₱2,990,757.99 but withheld ₱250,000.00. Respondent won a case to recover this amount. Later, the petitioner sued to recover the ₱250,000.00, arguing it was overcharged based on the MOA terms.
RTC Ruling: The Regional Trial Court (RTC) ruled in favor of the petitioner, stating the fee was based on a per-unit cost of ₱2,000.00, entitling the petitioner to a refund of ₱250,000.00.
CA Ruling: The Court of Appeals (CA) reversed the RTC decision, holding that the MOA did not stipulate a per-unit fee and that the commitment/service fee was a lump sum, not dependent on the number of units constructed.
Issues:
Whether the MOA reflected the true intention of the parties regarding the commitment/service fee.
Whether the petitioner is entitled to recover the ₱250,000.00 for the unconstructed housing units.
Whether Victor Facundo, the Vice President and General Manager, was authorized to negotiate and enter into the MOA terms.
Ruling:
The Supreme Court denied the petition, affirming the CA's decision that the MOA clearly stipulated a lump sum commitment/service fee of ₱320,000.00, payable regardless of the number of units constructed. The Court emphasized that contracts are the law between parties and should be interpreted based on their clear and explicit terms, not modified based on extrinsic evidence or claims of intentions not reflected in the document.
In this case, however, the Court found that the terms of the MOA were clear and unambiguous. Therefore, the provision of Article 1377 did not apply. The contract's clarity left no room for interpretation against any party, so it should be interpreted according to their literal meaning.
A contract of adhesion is a type of agreement where one party prepares the terms and the other party simply adheres to them, often with limited ability to negotiate.

How to Recover Abandoned Carts in WooCommerce?
It’s not uncommon for ecommerce shoppers to abandon carts. You may not know it, but your store might also be suffering from carts being abandoned. This problem can be addressed however. To start, you must determine why your customers abandon their carts.
Why online shoppers abandon carts and what you can do about it?
There are various reasons why online shoppers abandon their carts. We lay out the most common ones and what you can do to address them.
Checkout is Too Complicated
Your customers will nitpick and that is to be expected. When you make your customers jump hoops during checkout, you’re not doing them a favor. Your checkout should be quick and straightforward. If you must add some other stuff that will complicate checkout, consider if you can add it on the thank you page instead. The thank you page is the page where the customer is redirected to after making a successful purchase. If you need help tweaking your thank you page, the Wooassist team can help.
Users Need to Create an Account to Check Out
Internet users are already burned out having to create an account for each internet service that they use. Don’t add to that burden. Don’t force your customers to create an account if it’s not necessary. To enable guest checkouts on WooCommerce, go to your WordPress Dashboard, click on WooCommerce > Settings. Under the Account and Privacy tab, enable “Allow customers to place orders without an account”. You can tweak other account related settings here to your liking.
Too Many Checkout Form Fields
The default WooCommerce checkout page is good enough as it is. There is no need to add more fields unless necessary. If you’ve edited your checkout page before to add some unnecessary fields, look into it and consider removing it.
Unexpected Charges
Customers will abandon your checkout when they see the shipping fee. No one will force you to offer free shipping if it will make your business unsustainable. There are however some things that you can do to reduce abandoned carts as a result of shipping and other fees. People now are more accepting of shipping fees. For other fees, be transparent from the get-go. If you charge taxes, handling fees, and other fees, make it clear starting from the product page that you charge these fees. If they are suddenly greeted by these fees on checkout, it will look like unscrupulous practice.
Too Many Clicks to Checkout
Reducing cart abandonment is all about simplifying your product purchase process. Ideally, it should not take more than three clicks for a customer to check out. If it takes four clicks to check out, that is one click too many. Get rid of unnecessary barriers to completing checkout.
Don’t Make it Hard to Contact You
Some of your prospective customers will look for your contact details before they make a purchase. If they added a product to their cart but could not find your contact information or even a contact us page, there is a high likelihood that that user will abandon that cart. To prevent this from happening, make sure you have a contact us page. Even better, if you can add your email or phone number on your WooCommerce store’s header.
Payment Issues
Another common reason for abandoning shopping carts is payment issue. When the customer tries to pay for his/her order and it fails, you can bet that cart will be abandoned. The solution here is simple. Offer more than one mode of payment. Some common payment channels you can use are Paypal, Stripe, Authorize.net, Apple Pay, Amazon Pay, and Square.
Other Things You Can Do to Reduce Cart Abandonment
Show Security Certificates
To be able to sell your products or services online, you’ll need to be able to establish that you are trustworthy. You can show security certificates and security seals on your checkout page to improve your trust rating. Some security seals that you can add to your site as Norton, McAfee and TRUSTe.
Offer Free Shipping
Free shipping can significantly reduce your cart abandonment rates. However, not every business can make a profit when offering free shipping. As an alternative, you can offer free shipping when your customers meets a required minimum order value or quantity. This strategy can also help improve your average order value.
Offer a Money-Back Guarantee
Most consumer laws dictate that you should have a return policy anyway. So there’s no reason not to do it. Making your money-back guarantee known shows your prospective customers that you have faith in the quality of your product or service. Don’t worry about the people that might abuse your money-back guarantee. It hardly ever happens. And if it happens a lot, the problem might be your product.
Improve Your Page Load Speeds
If your site is slow, some of your prospective customers might get frustrated and abandon their carts. Make sure your site is fast.
How to Recover Abandoned Carts
There are many ways to recover abandoned carts. Some of the more common methods are remarketing and abandoned cart emails.
Using Remarketing to Recover Abandoned Carts
There are many platforms that you can use for remarketing. Essentially, remarketing works by saving a cookie on the user’s browser so you can show them your tailored ads. Neil Patel details how you can use remarking on Adwords to recover abandoned carts. Facebook is another platform that you can use for remarketing. SproutSocial details how to use remarketing on Facebook.
Using Abandoned Cart Emails to Recover Abandoned Carts
Abandoned cart emails send your customers a reminder email if they did not complete their purchase. For guest checkouts, this requires that the user must at least have entered his/her email address. This won’t be an issue if you require your customers to register before making a purchase. Do note however that requiring customers to create an account may hurt your conversion rates. There are a lot of abandoned cart email plugins that work for WooCommerce, you just have to find the plugin that works for your needs.
Recover abandoned carts and improve your sales by implementing these strategies. If you have any questions, you can post a comment below. If you need help setting up abandoned cart emails or anything else, you can send us email.
