“The boy looked at Johnny” is a line from Patti Smith's song “Horses,” part one of a three-part song called “Land.” In the song, a young man named Johnny is assaulted by another man in a locker room; he then mentally journeys to other fantastical lands and visions. A lot of people interpret it as being about gay sex, although some people interpret it as being about a stabbing.

Peter quotes and references Jean Genet's writing and works about Jean Genet many times. While Genet's works are nearly all about crime and prison (one of Peter's main interests and points of fascination), all of his works are very explicitly gay. The Thief's Journal is more about Genet's various lovers than it is about his criminal history. Our Lady Of The Flowers is about a drag queen and her criminal lovers, and is also extremely erotic.

How to write a foreign character in a new country

So when you write a story, some of your characters might travel the world and see new places. That can be really scary and confusing at times! Here’s a small guide on how to write that realistically.

1. What does the character already know about the country?

Depending on how spontaneously they decided to get there, they might know very little about the culture and rules of the country. For example, what if you came to Greece without knowing that nodding your head up meant “no” instead of “yes” (which would be nodding your head down)? So that’s something you should think about first. Did the character do research before their travel? Did they just google it on the plane or did they spend at least a month planning? This could greatly affect how confident the character is in themselves when they arrive. That planning also has to do with the character’s personality, whether or not their quickly anxious and how spontaneous and confident they are in general.

2. How different is the new country from their own country?

There’s a big difference between going from the Netherlands to Germany and going from Russia to Japan. Your character might experience something called a “culture shock”, which means that they start feeling absolutely out of place because they don’t feel incorporated in the new culture they’ve got thrown into. For this, you should try to research the different cultures of the character’s original country and the one they are visiting. Sometimes, there’s also the possibility that the different countries are quite similar. That can be used for funny situations where the character thinks everything’s fine and familiar and then something happens that throws them of. What about for example England and America? They aren’t so different in many ways, but one big thing that pops into mind is that in England you drive on the left side of the road, and in America they drive on the right. Imagine stepping out of the airport, thinking to yourself “Yass welcome to America!” and then almost getting run over by a car because you looked the wrong side of the road- That can be quite shocking. But the character might also find comfort in the small things that remind them of their original country. You could also try to find out how the currencies are in the two countries- will the character have to adapt to a new system? Do they have to go to the bank to exchange currencies? Will they need time to get used to paying “2 dollars” instead of “17,85 Dirham”, or is the currency the same after all? That’s an important thing to take into consideration.

3. Languages

Of course, language is a very important part of traveling and living in a new country. In most countries, people can speak English and that’s really practical, but on longterm, not knowing the language of a country you want to live in evolves into a grave problem. And even if your character already knows the language, modern slang could be a real struggle. Textbook-Vocabulary might be enough for work and studying, but in daily life, not knowing what certain words mean can get so very annoying. Another thing to consider when including struggles with language could be accents and dialects. As an example, people from the north of Germany and people from the South can barely understand each other because of their different dialects, so even if someone knows German, they might have to learn even more just to live in a certain area of the country. Also, obviously British English and American English are not the same at all. On one side, there’s the accent, on the other, some words are completely different. In school, we used to do exercises that were like vocabulary tests where you had to “translate” words from British to American English, which included “cab” and “taxi”, “holiday” and “vacation” and so on and so forth. The point is, even if your character already speaks the “right�� language, locals will probably notice rather quickly that they are not from around, whether it would be from their accent, because they don’t know the slang or because they use different words for the same thing.

4. People and structures

This point is a little abstract, but I wanted to include it anyways. Depending on how far away the character is traveling, they will probably encounter people that behave very differently than what they are used to. Here, you should look out that you don’t overdo stereotypes. However, you can say with quite some certainty that America is much more diverse than Germany, and that in France, the people are more warm and matey than in England. But don’t go into the extremes and make every American a bald-eagle-breeder that quotes the Declaration of Independence at every possible occasion and every German a beer-loving N*zi, that’s just unrealistic. With “structures”, I mean that you could look into the classical architectural styles of the country that the character came from and the one they’re in now. Sometimes, those can be very different, so it can be a cool detail to include in your story.

5. Reactions

As mentioned, when you’re new to a country, people WILL notice. The question is, how do they react? This also has to do with where exactly your character is living, not only country-wise, but also whether they’re in a big city, a suburban neighborhood or the countryside. Furthermore, of course you’ll have to find fitting reactions for your character. Are they intimidated by the big buildings of the city because they’ve only known small two-level-builds so far? Are they excited to get to know new people and learn a new language, or are they scared? You should consider that and more to make that part of your story as realistic as possible.

6. Example

As originally requested, here’s some inspiration for writing a british character coming to America for work/study.

They’ll probably be very much confused by what side of the road the cars drive on, and, depending on whether they have a car, will have to concentrate a great deal the first few times they drive themselves. They will have to adapt to the American English and try to stop saying “chips” instead of “fries” when ordering, and it their accent could make them insecure at times, especially if they’re surrounded by locals. Furthermore, they would have to participate in Thanksgiving and the Independence Day because all of their new acquaintances will. Halloween may not be a much bigger deal in America than it is in England (because it’s a really important thing there), but the Christmas traditions can differ greatly. The character would have to deal with the fact that they pay in dollars now instead of pounds, and would have to arrange themselves with the knowledge that one of their favorite snacks doesn’t exist in America.

Stage 0: El Calafate, Santa Cruz, Patagonia

Teamwork: There’s no I in team

But I always think with this observation, there’s a “me”. There’s also a mate, are, eat, mat and quite a lot of others if you play scrabble! The point I’m trying to make is that I am the luckiest person on the planet. At home, there is the unsung Uber God of this adventure, who for the first time in my life, has voluntarily taken the role of operation HQ. This has involved getting me to the airport, listening to me cry as the dream began to disintegrate, and made me start walking again when in dispair, I threw my hat on the ground and just stopped and erupted in a pool of emotion. He listens, consoles, analyses. thinks, problem-solves, and is calm when I’m anything but. I am the world’s ****** bike mechanic, and he knows that any time I pick up a tool, there’s going to be a volcanic explosion of expletives. He knows too that whatever I say one day will have morphed and grown legs 24 hours later, probably several times. He is the one that taught me self defends, to go in hard, gauge their eyes, bite their ears…and to carry a satellite device and sleeping bag, the worst Christmas present ever! (I’m actually very grateful and I’m sure I’ll change my mind at some point - thank you also to Sue!). He is the most selfless, balanced, at times childish person I’ve been lucky to have met, and somehow, he’s here for me. I know that if something happened to me, he’d be here 3 days max. He is the hero and the headline of this trip, however it unfolds. I’ll probably marry him one day if he’ll have me, and is up for a life of uncertainty. 😄

The second person to be in our team is Ian. Ian is also an awesome friend, who I can rely on following his wheel like no other. With Ian on the team and my second responder should I press the SOS button, I feel that whilst this is more challenging than anything I’ve ever done, these amazing friends have my back. If either Ian or Mark could ride this trip with me, it would be the ultimate adventure.

Sunday:

Sometimes, things work out really well. I’m not a suburban monkey, which is probably true of most cyclists. Plan F was a solid plan, but Plan B was my favourite, riding north. Having mentally said goodbye to my End of the world dreams, I landed on Sunday night in El Calafate, mesmerised by the magnitude of the landscape I’d flown over and into. Ruben, my taxi driver tried very hard to chat with me, but all I could manage was Hasta Pronto, amazing, and mucho bueno, although I continued with miming various things for which he laughed with spirit and gust. Ruben was also able to take me to Perito Morena ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perito_Moreno_Glacier), 76km west, whose 250km span extends over the Chilean border and whose meltwater feeds Lago Argentina. Ruben’s company was enticing, but my arrival in Patagonia heralded a bonus day of cycling, meaning I could ride there. I kept his details anyway, as with all the other people I’d met here, [email protected] was warm and welcoming, and you just never know what’s down the road.

While sat airside at Buenos Aires, I’d booked an Airbnb, which on meeting the owner Fido as he opened the door, wafted a distinct and resident scent of weed. From the small glance I’d taken of the town, this was fitting and comforting. I felt at home. (Please don’t read this that I do weed! I just find the smell comforting!). Too tired to do anything that night, I scoffed what I could from the previous leftover provisions and at midnight, finally slept.

The next morning, I woke to remember hearing gale force winds whistling through the windows and rafters. They started so suddenly, it startled me. I’d heard about the Patagonian winds and prayed again that when I started pedalling they would be in my favour and removing my need for pedals.

El Calafate was a great, if unplanned place to start my trip. The town is ultra-cool in a very laid back way. The surrounding scenery reminded of the area in Canada between Lillooett and Kamloops, but the town like Manitou Springs in Colorado. My lasting memory will be of the street dogs. Here, it would seem any domestic pet (for those lucky ones that have a home) will be evicted at daylight and if lucky, welcomed back at dusk, which here is similar to daylight hours in peak summer in Stockholm. They’re unkempt, but the most chilled out canines I’ve seen anywhere on the planet. Whist having breakfast in Pietros, a corner cafe, in business since 1993, one by one, a dog would lazily lie by its corner, realise it’s too hot and then hang out by the tables. In the evening, they were a bit more active. I imagined a conversation for one impromptu gathering:

“Yo, dude, what’s hanging?”

“Hey, just sniffing this, it’s pretty cool”

“It looks it! Mind if I join you?”

“Be my guest. It’s good right?”

In 30 seconds, in my head, there was a telepathic canine chat going on between 6 dogs, of all shapes, size and colour, forming a huddle and in no particular hurry. It would likely be scorned on by many, but I called them over wherever I passed them and gave them a good ol’ scratch and tickle whenever I could. Their fur was matted, dusty and unkempt; some had what felt like tics, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to care for them. When I finally got home after dinner, still thinking about all the awesome dogs and the day I’d had, a red long-coated ageing beauty presented itself on the grass outside my house. I made up some Spanish and she came over. It started with a scratch, and by the time I’d finished, I’d got my hair brush that would be left behind the next day, and pulled 5 lumps of fur from her, which she clearly enjoyed. There was tar on her paws, and her tail was so tangled, my brush wouldn’t go through. I felt so sad. It turned out, she lived in the house next to mine…maybe dog caring could be my next move…

The ride: Monday

I’d finally got my act together and headed east to the Glacier. It was 76km away, meaning a 152km round trip. On my fit days, this distance is normal. The route was surprisingly flat, which I didn’t expect (as surely glaciers need to be at altitude or at the poles? Not at sea level, surely?). Breaking myself in gently, and predicting as it was a glacier it would be cold, I packed my warm weather gear in to the much unwanted bar bag and hit the road. As it happened, I also hit a wall of wind, and very quickly realised this would me omnipresent for the day. Unfazed and with a plan, I set my sights for a slow day, and put faith in the possibility of riding only one direction.

My intention had been to take it easy. But with the heaviest head and cross winds I’ve ever experienced, it became a day of fortitude and grit. As you’d expect, I was riding in nirvana: glacial plains, azure blue and then white watered lakes with white horses chasing to the east. The road itself was dreamily smooth, wide and empty. But the wind was relentless and magnificent. As I crossed the main glacial valley, the wind moved to a cross wind of such intensity, even locked down on the drops, and gritting my teeth, I was blown into the road. Somehow, an avenue of shrubs had managed to grow up along this stretch, providing intermittent shelter, followed by violent thrusts…2 hours in, I was only 20 miles into a 45 mile ride: this was going to be a tough one.

It’s amazing what you can do when you surrounded by extreme beauty. I didn’t feel like moaning, but laughed at the intensity of this start in Patagonia. This training in the wind and with some extra gear had to put me in good stead for the upcoming adventure. With 7km to go, and knowing that winds can change direction, I set my sights on first establishing food, then a lift back to the town. Again I was winging it, but of all days where this was a possibility, it was likely to be today. I expected a shuttle bus kiosk at the visitor center, but that turned out to be misguided. After speaking to one knowledgeable gentlemen, who assured me that it’s ok, the wind only ever blows east off the glacier, I’ll have a tailwind home, my internal sense check took over. With a tailwind, I had the prospect of a 30 miles per hour coast all the way back. But I just didn’t trust him or the wind, and I definitely wasn’t as strong as I’d planned to be at this stage. After a few more conversations, a local guide found a friendly bus driver, who loaded my bike into the boot, secured by an old suitcase, I’d found my lift. He too was a cyclist of 55, who decided I should drive the bus and he would ride back! He loved my bike and it’s weight, flicking his fingers enviously at its carbon frame. He was very proud to tell me he’d done many ultra cycle marathons and in March was racing Rio Gallegos to El Calafate. The more I manage simple, animated conversations with my new Argentine friends, the more I am in love with Argentina.

I should mention the glacier. It is amazing how different nature is when you immersed in it. I remember turning a first corner and glimpsing the first sight and nose of the ice, pedalling to reward myself with an up close view. I stayed long enough to hear the ice break and echo through the national park. I was pleased that as a tourist spot, I’d arrived at a time when most had left, but didn’t really stay as long as I’d hoped. That said, I have an opportunity to head to El Chalten in the next few days. I could also get the shuttle back up today, but won’t, as I feel that the experience of cycling there was so immersive. Although the wind battered me and extracted every last joule of energy, the immensity of nature is the experience, and for me, not simply looking at it having arrived. I don’t imagine any person on a bus would have sensed the power of that glacial wind. Although I am not good in the cold, this force of nature for the first time, had me considering an ice expedition. Who knows?

Today: plan A and a half

I’m again lying in bed. About an hour ago, I heard an almighty crash, like a house collapsing or a rock fall or glacial crack. It set all the dogs of the town into a chorus of alarm. The wind is howling around the building and seems stronger than yesterday but looking at a map, if it’s “safe enough” to do so, I could have that dream day of being blown to my next destination, which if I’m tired and there’s accommodation, could be La Leone. If I’m feeling strong, Tres Lagos. Today is a real test as I’m now truly entering the Patagonian Desert, which is sparse! If I make it to Tres Lagos, I won’t be doing El Chalten, which wouldn’t be a shame, as it’s the backdrop for Patagonia’s logo due to it’s tri mountain peaks. It could be a repeat of yesterday, so let’s see where the wind blows me…

Notes:Thanks for reading! We've had a grand few chapters of fluff and smut, but we're not off the angst train yet I'm sorry to say. We all knew this was coming, Jamie has to go back to his wee Christmas tree farm outside of London, leaving Claire on Long Island. At least they're still together! Just a short little chapter for them to say goodbye this week.

Chapter 12: “Death by a Thousand Cuts”

Jamie and Claire spent the rest of the week cherishing every moment they had left together. Claire came straight back to the Murray farm every day after work and helped Jamie with whatever work he was doing on the farm, getting to know the Murray family in the process, and the couple spent late nights of love-making and promise-making in Jamie’s bed. Every moment they had left together was sacred. Their time, their wine, their spirits, their trust, there wasn’t a part of each other that they didn’t take up. By Friday night they were both sleep deprived and wept in each other’s arms, knowing it was their last night together. Usually, Jamie could quiet Claire’s fears with the touch of his hand, but that night their fears were shared. They fell asleep exhausted, puffy-eyed and wrapped in each other’s embrace, boarding up the windows of their love for the season, protecting it and keeping it safe.

Their final physical joining came the next morning; it was weepy, slow and indulgent. Claire gave Jamie everything she could: her heart, her hips, her body, her love--there wasn’t a part of her that he didn’t touch, and he gave as much to her. They kept as many points of contact between them as they could--hands were always on the other, their bodies facing each other always, making eye contact as they moved in rhythm with each other, savoring every sensation big and small. They lay in each other’s embrace afterwards, unable to let go. Easily convincing themselves that if they stayed in bed the day would never begin and Jamie wouldn’t have to leave. Eventually there was a knock at the door of the apartment. “Yes?!” Jamie grunted, well aware that it was likely his sister.

In fact, Jenny’s voice responded from the other side of the door “You two best be getting out of bed so ya can say goodbye ta yer family brathair! Dinna make me get a bucket of water to splash on you two! I’ve got a hearty breakfast prepared for ya and it’ll get cold if yer not down ta tha house in 10 minutes!”

“Aye Janet, I’m about ready, no need for a water bucket we’ll be down shortly.” Jamie shouted back.

Claire whimpered as Jamie peeled himself out of the bed to dress for breakfast.

“I know, mo nighean donn” he whispered, brushing a curl from her face and kissing her forehead. “I know.” Usually Jamie would have the perfect words to say to transform Claire’s mood, but all he could do was share in her pain, because it was his pain too. I can’t pretend that it’s ok when it’s not. He thought, trying to come up with something to say. There was no easy way to do this. Saying good-bye was death by a thousand cuts.

Claire had agreed over a family dinner earlier that week to drive Jamie to the airport, much to Jenny and Ian’s relief. Jamie was flying out from a small airport an hour North of the city and neither of the Murray’s felt inclined to lose half a Saturday when there was always work to do on the farm, in addition to minding the children off from school for the weekend. The Murray’s found that Claire was a helpful addition to the family, even in the short week she spent on their homestead. This was shown particularly when wee Janet threw a toy at Michael’s head causing him to gush blood, which in turn sent Jenny into a near panic. Claire used her medical expertise to clean and bandaged the wound, able to keep her cool despite the gory scene before her. She assured Jenny Michael would not need stitches, that heads just bled a lot, having many blood vessels to supply oxygen to the brain. Claire continued to check and dress the wound for Michael throughout the week, and Michael, having gotten over the initial shock and pain of the event, was now looking forward to having a ‘cool forehead scar like Harry Potter’. The event was a blessing in disguise for Claire and Jamie, because Jamie became assured that Claire had won Jenny over and wasted no time asking her if Claire could stay. Jenny agreed enthusiastically, thrilled to have a nurse on call as her children were inclined to taking risks and getting into small accidents.

Claire couldn’t believe how her life had completely transformed in the space of a week. She had started her life as an only child, continued her upbringing with her single uncle after her parents’ untimely death, drifted into Frank’s arms in college only to find herself completely alone in a large, suburban McMansion. She had never had more than one or two people she could call family and now here she was, surrounded by the vibrancy and love of a large, chaotic brood. They were quick to embrace her as one of their own and Claire couldn’t believe she had lived her whole life without the feeling of family. She was elated to be included and was glad she had loved ones to surround herself with when Jamie was gone. She knew it wouldn’t be an easy season, but having people who loved Jamie just as much as she did close by was reassuring.

Jamie drove to the airport since Claire would be driving the whole way home alone. For the most part the drive was silent, save for the radio playing in the background. What station it was tuned to, neither of them could say, their thoughts were elsewhere. Everything there was to be said had already been said, and anything that was spoken would only lead to another deluge of tears. All they could do was hold hands, desperately trying to keep one another close, unable to let go just yet. The airport was so small that the security line extended into the lobby, unlike the winding queues Claire was used to seeing at JFK or LaGuardia. Claire waited in line with him for as long as she could, wishing desperately she could go through with him and part with him at the gate. This made for an awkward parting, where they let several people cut ahead of them in line as they said their final farewell.

“Sassenach, you know this is a great love we have, one for the ages. If there were still bards in this world they’d sing a tale of our love. We’re strong enough to get through this.” Jamie assured her. He was holding her close and kissed her forehead softly through his tears.

Claire was sobbing so hard she could hardly reply. All she could manage to choke out was “Jamie, I love you. I’ll always love you.”

They embraced firmly, soaking each other’s shoulders with tears. They gave each other one last sloppy, passionate kiss, that lasted as long as it could before the person behind them in line cleared their throat loudly to encourage them to get on with it. They held hands as Jamie moved away to the security official. Claire stood outside the barrier until Jamie finally disappeared into the airport on the other side of security, glancing back as much as he could, giving a final wave as he rushed off to his gate in a final flash of red hair.

Losing sight of him, Claire fled from the airport and back to the car, collapsing over the steering wheel she cried until she could cry no more, she had no idea how long she sobbed, meanwhile, texting Jamie final good-byes before he had to shut his phone off while the plane taxied. In their text, they made solid promises and paper thin plans to see each other soon. Jamie desperately wanted to come home for American Thanksgiving, but knowing that was when business really started to pick up for him, he didn’t know if he could allow his godfather and his hired hand to take over so much responsibility. Maybe she could come visit him, but she would have to take a few extra days off work and it was so hard to find qualified nurses to substitute for her in her absence. Jamie did promise he would see her at Christmas no matter what. He always took a red-eye Christmas Eve to visit his family over the winter holidays, unable to miss Christmas and Hogmanay with the Murray’s. Seeing the unbridled joy on his niece’s and nephew’s faces on Christmas morning was one of the greatest pleasures of Jamie’s life, at least until he met Claire. Now, he was ecstatic at the idea of sharing the experience of her, and Claire was looking forward to it as well. Usually she drove up to Boston to visit her Uncle Lamb and they had a humble dinner and small gift exchange. The Murray’s assured her she could invite Lamb and Claire was looking forward to her first experience of a large family Christmas.

Eventually, Claire’s tears dried up, leaving only their sadness and she was able to see well enough to drive home. She took the long way home, not wanting to risk the speed of the expressway in her emotional state, and not ready to face an existence without Jamie upon her arrival home. Not having anyone else to talk to, Claire asked the traffic lights if it would be alright, and they responded with a silent reply of “I don’t know”. The tears were starting to flow again as Claire returned to Long Island again, and she decided to stop at her house to pack some of her things before returning to Jamie’s empty apartment. She sighed as she entered the foyer, the chandelier still flickering above her as she flipped the switch, somewhat comforted by the familiar emptiness of the space. She was used to this house being empty and devoid of love, she could live with the feeling there, she wasn’t sure if she could live with the feeling of being where Jamie once lived and breathed and moved and cooked and bathed and made love to her, constantly feeling he should be there doing those things.

She spent hours packing, organizing and reorganizing her things, dressing in old clothes to see if she still liked them, anything to kill the time so she could prolong the inevitable. If she was there, she could still pretend Jamie was at his apartment, she could pretend everything was ok when it wasn’t. She remembered those first nights staying at the house after Frank left. He had given up on her like she was a bad drug, walked out never to return again, hired someone to pack his things, gone without a goodbye. His absence, though haunting brought with it a sense of relief. There was emptiness, but at least his stifling presence wasn’t filling the space. Frank had been intolerable in their final weeks; he was mistrusting, manipulative, condescending and controlling, even before Claire had acted on her desire for Jamie. She had been on her best behavior, trying to be the perfect future-wife to him. She gave him so much, but it wasn’t enough to win him over, to bring him back to the man she had fallen in love with. If anything, Frank’s distrust was a catalyst for her unfaithfulness. She remembered thinking damned if I do, damned if I don’t so I might as well. At that time, an empty home was a comfort to her--now, she knew that wouldn't be the case.

The sky grew dark and Claire had filled her car up with boxes. Even if she had more to pack, she couldn’t have fit anymore and it was time to face the inevitable task of going home to an empty bed. On the drive back through a small town she saw Jamie everywhere, thinking of all the drives they had shared on those very roads, hand in hand, anticipating whatever would come next.

Once she arrived, she unloaded some of the boxes into the garage, where Jenny had cleared a space for her to store her belongings that wouldn’t fit in Jamie’s small apartment. There weren’t many boxes, just some trinkets and souvenirs from her travels with Uncle Lamb, and old photo albums and memorabilia from her parents that she kept tucked away. She left all the dishes and decorations at the house, Frank could decide what to do with them when he sold the place, she no longer had any interest in the relics of a cookie-cutter life she put together with Frank. The boxes filled with her clothes and shoes could wait until morning, she left those in the car and ascended the steps to Jamie’s apartment.

The ghost of his presence haunted the room, it was as if he had vanished into thin air. There were so many signs of him: his summer clothes were still in the closet, his unwashed glass on the kitchen counter, his sandals placed beside the door. The bedsheets still smelled like him. Everything smelled like him. This apartment, which in the past week had gone from his to ours, felt like it was no one’s now. Claire poured herself a healthy portion of whiskey and headed to the bed, taking the bottle with her. Her tear ducts had replenished themselves and she was crying again. She was torn between wanting to bury her face in Jamie’s pillow, and worried that the saltiness of her tears would dilute Jamie’s scent, the most tangible thing she had left of him. She spent the rest of the night crying herself to sleep and getting drunk, but it wasn’t enough; the morning came and he was still gone. Her dreams were restless, memories of him, flashbacks of their life together kept wandering in and out of her subconscious, occasionally waking her up to the devastating reminder that he wasn’t really there.

End Notes: I'm not making any promises about next week's chapter being on time. Posting on Friday was a self-imposed deadline, but 1. grades are due next week (I'm a teacher) and 2. the next chapter is really personal and emotionally difficult for me to write (but also a healthy cathartic thing). I may still post on schedue because my superintendent did reward us with an extra day off next week and there's a good chance that Thanksgiving dinner will be just my husband and I which will allow for more time for writing, but I just wanted to give you all a heads up in case it isn't ready.
