I'm also an avid gardener and though I am from Gaza City, I'm a farmer at heart!  Farmers represent the deep rootedness Palestinians have to the land.  For Palestinians, farming, especially during a time of genocide and ecocide-is an act of deep faith and the very embodiment of Sumood- the Palestinian concept of steadfast perseverance.
Background
Once known for its lush apple orchards, strawberries, and citrus, northern Gaza is now completely cut off from the rest of Gaza.  
As part of its policy to make Gaza unlivable, Israel has destroyed 50% of Gaza's trees and farmland, and severely restricted the entry of food and aid, especially to the north. The scale of damage and destruction is catastrophic. Israeli forces have leveled agricultural land, 90% of all greenhouses, olive groves, and poultry farms. The entire population is now facing a forced starvation policy and experiencing extreme hunger. 
Your Donation Will Help Change This Reality by Providing Rooftop, Home, and Urban Vegetable Gardens through seedling and seed distribution for Vulnerable and Displaced Families in Northern Gaza who are subsisting on 245 calories a day. 
What and Why?  
I'm organizing this campaign to help support farmers and families in the areas of northern Gaza most impacted by Israel's ongoing war to start their own rooftop and home gardens-a small step towards self sufficiency and food sovereignty. All international and local aid agencies have had to evacuate from the north, leaving the population especially vulnerable, and whatever limited amounts of fresh produce and aid are available are sold astronomical prices. 
How?
I spent months researching and consulting with agricultural experts in Gaza and abroad on the most secure and effective way to give Palestinians sustainable access to fresh produce.  Next, I partnered with with the Gaza Palestinian American Association and the Middle East Children's Alliance, both accredited 501(c)(3)  who are taking 0% overhead, as well as a team of community based partners in Gaza, who will be sourcing the supplies needed to start the home gardens locally and managing the project.  
Our team on the ground has been working hard to source and start growing local seedlings to distribute to families, and other materials needed to provide them with the resources they desperately need to start their own home, rooftop, patio, and community vegetable gardens, depending on the spaces they have access to.  We will roll out the project in several phases, which each phase targeting 100 families.
Each family will receive:
* At least 30 assorted seasonal vegetables seedlings (Palestinian summer squash, hot peppers, eggplant, cucumber and tomatoes, depending on availability)
* 80 grams of local seeds (dill, mulukhiya, chard), 
* Compost, soil, and amendments 
* Plastic planters, irrigation cans, where needed
* Training and follow up by agriculture experts
Your donations will also help fund the purchase of several solar panel systems to power  community wells that communities rely on to drink and irrigate their gardens and farms with (currently, municipal access to water is limited to once every ten days, and well motors are inoperable due to an Israeli ban on the entry of fuel).

The door in the meadow has been there for months. I'll be keeping a closer eye on the door these days though - that scrap of woods is also my calendar, the little brook usually surrounded by skunk cabbages poking up as the first sign of spring. The timing's all gone wrong the last few seasons, no snow then too much snow then floods. I last passed through on February 28th, and the cabbages were there - harder to spot without their blanket of snow. When a plant generates enough internal heat to melt a hole through a foot of snow, it tends to catch the eye. Less so when it's one spike of mottled burgundy-brown against a creek bed.

In my last visit, I was observed - several deer on the opposite side of the creek, separated by a small rill of water and a bank of reeds. I think I've failed to paint an adequate picture, from a topographic point of view. It's a place of nature, as dictated by the university's categorization scheme for its outer regions - a Natural Area, the So-and-So Woods Natural Area, a remnant of woodland that rises up and down around a small scrap of crick. In the middle is a meadow on top of the ridge, like a pause for sunlight, ringed by berry bushes. The ridge slopes down to the north to the stream, which is granted a brief reprieve between the severe constraints of an uphill golf course and the suburban neighborhood downhill where it is blinkered by culverts.

This week I kept focusing on the workshop by first improving on the plan and then choosing three zones from the plan and designed the roof, facade and structural systems specifically to the environmental conditions required by each zone:

Look, the framing of the original post by the MIT is idiotic, but that doesn't mean that excess electricity production isn't a problem.
Electricity isn't a fuel like oil or coal, it's energy in movement, and as such, once it's produced in any part of a grid, it HAS to be consumed in other parts of it, or you get an electrical surge in the weakest place, which means losing infrastructure and dangers to people, buildings and the environment.
Back before cheap solar panels, this wasn't a big issue, because most electrical grids were centralised, and producers could estimate with relative ease when in the day more energy was needed. And anyway, they would always get paid for the electricity consumed and generated.
In a distributed energy grid with the usual rules we know, domestic producers (people with solar panels in their houses) not only do not know when and how much energy they need to generate to keep the grid balanced, but also have an economic incentive to not care: they get paid whenever they are generating an energy surplus.
The "easy" solution for this is to have the big producers to include solar radiance and solar panel usage in their calculations, to estimate how much less energy they need to generate during the day, but this only serves when the overall amount is still positive: if the grid is spending less electricity than what's generated distributedly, they cannot do anything to prevent surges. It's not like they can run a thermoelectric plant in reverse polarity and un-burn coal or gas!
They are, of course, means to store energy, you'll say, and you're right, but their efficiency, compared to the consumption of energy cities have, of the efficiency of the newer solar panels, isn't enough to keep the pace. Batteries, in particular, are really expensive and voluminous in respect to their capacity to store energy, and thus are a very bad option.
Some better alternatives have been proposed, like redesigning hydroelectric dams to be able to run them backwards, but this only works when the water downstream is just as accumulated as the one upstream: you can pump water from a lake or a sea to a dam, but not reverse the flow of a river! You might as well see a proposal to use huge cranes to build temporary towers of concrete blocks and dismantle them back to recover energy from gravity, but the efficiency of that design has also been called in question.
In practice, there are just three ways to actually manage this problem:
1. Do the equivalent of burning excess methane in an oil rig and "burn" extra electricity with useless lights and turbines, with all the environmental consequences it can have.
2. Interconnect electric grids from east to west across continents to send energy away from the places where it's being generated and towards places that are still at night, or even connect from north to south intercontinentally to send energy from places in summer to those in winter; all of this at enormous costs and huge impacts to the environment.
3. Or simply to create a better pricing scheme and control systems for distributed electric production, so that people in their houses don't produce energy when it's not needed, which has negligible costs or environmental impacts, but feels like a rip-off from the electric companies to sustainability-minded individuals.
