This week, I learned that - in the UK - you can be too poor to declare bankruptcy.
It costs nearly £500 to legally declare that you have less than a penny to your name. What the actual hell?

The British police rn are attempting to reconcile the accountability laws that allow us to prosecute officers because last year one of their officers murdered an innocent man and has been rightfully convicted of murder. Not a lot gets said about the metropolitan police or UK police in general, as their crimes are often overshadowed by the crimes of the pigs in the US, but they are no less racist, no less murderous and no less completely fucking evil than their American counterparts. Justice for Chris Kaba, fuck the police.

It's in the notes but I'll add it here too: this is an excellent resource to help you understand what the questions are actually saying. I recommend formulating your own answers instead of just copy-pasting the ones here, but this really helped me out!
The UK Government have launched a consultation on whether AI should be allowed to scrape content online with complete disregard for copyright.
The consultation is stuffed to the brim with technobabble buzzwords and jargon that frames AI as wonderful and that this is a foregone conclusion.
You can submit a response via the link above and tell them what you really think.

The Golliwog and the tory who wanted a slave – Slavery was bad, okay?
This piece by Dr Peter Olusoga (senior lecturer in psychology, brother of historian David, both from working class Northern backgrounds) does well in expressing just how frustrating it is to be thrown back into The Most Retro racism, and having to explain basics like 'golliwogs are racist caricatures used to denigrate Black people' to an unrepentant, disingenuous crowd of shit-brained bigots hellbent on gaslighting those of us who grew up in the 20th century and were on the receiving end of this and other racist pejoratives
One of the things I'm actually stunned by is that there are actually people who - with a straight face - have been saying 'they're called gollies actually', as if *that* makes it all better
It's bad enough that Black people have to even explain the way that they're racist at all; now we also have to contend with bad faith claims that only one specific form of the name is racist and 'you're the real racist for using that word aktchually'
Those fucking dolls were *always* racist. However nostalgic you are for your childhood nursery and Enid Blyton and whatnot, they *always* represented the dehumanisation of Black people in accordance with the views of white supremacy and western European colonialism

so, now that keir starmer is having just stop oil and extinction rebellion arrested for even thinking of protesting, have the british liberals on here now considered that simply 'getting the tories out' with your vote and doing so exclusive to other activities, is not actually going to make living here any better?

Just another day on Normal Island:
Stewart Lansley, the author of The Richer, the Poorer and The Cost of Inequality, said it was “an acute paradox of contemporary capitalism that as societies get more prosperous, rising numbers are unable to afford the most basic of material and social needs”. He said: “In Britain, child poverty has doubled in 40 years. Yet few modern tycoons go without private jets, luxury yachts, even private islands.” Lansley blames the way the gains from growth have been increasingly colonised by a small group of financial and business magnates – a process he says is facilitated by state policy. “Many of Britain’s deep-seated problems – a broken economy, hollowed-out public services, static and falling living standards, the doubling of child poverty since the late 1970s, and the fall in social resilience – can be traced to the way the economy has been turned into a cash cow for the already rich,” he said.

Super cool to be living in a fascist country.
Hello Mr Gaiman, are you aware that a French publisher was arrested today upon arrival to London for the book fair and is currently being held without a lawyer on suspicion of terrorism because he participated in the protests in France? As a French writer and union representative for writers, but mostly as a French citizen, I am absolutly outraged at what is obviously a threat to our right to protest and an attempt to intimidate the movement into submission. I'd understand if you'd rather not get into that but as a writer with a lot of influence worldwide, your support would be much appreciated (if anything, to spread awareness of the situation abroad).
Thanks a lot for your work in general, it has been and always will be a source of inspiration for me.
Kind regards,
Jolan Bertrand
I wasn't aware, no. But I googled and was astonished. Invoking terrorism laws against lawful protesters is a scary thing to do.
