I think it’s funny that Alex’s love story is referred to as Shakespearean considering what’s to come.

Cakegate is really funny for some reason.

The foreshadowing! Like Zarah telling Alex to gush about Henry like he’s his prom date.

 Okay Alex and Henry bonding over Star Wars is sweet and kind of nerdy. I like it.

Really? The jealous boyfriend shtick? They really couldn't do anything else with Ren in this movie so they had him get jealous when some new guy (Cyborg) talks to her? Its just such an awful and unnecessary look on Ren, if anything he would politely ask Cyborg not to do anything flirty with Nora.

On one hand Ren right to he suspicious because A, these guys are from another world, and B the most important part, CYBORG IS AN ADULT IN A TEENAGERS BODY. Seriously does RT have a weird kink for this?

But on the other hand at this point in RWBY's story Ren and Nora arent seeing eye to eye (this takes place somewhere between the Atlas Montage think) so this is the point in time Ren really isn't sure of his relationship with Nora so maybe even he doesn't understand why he feels so jealous.

And while im on the topic, does Nora just not see how Ren is clearly upset with Cyborg? Nora may not be able to tell how Ren feels all the time but she should obviously see he isn't okay when he's openly sarcastic and aggressive with Cyborg. Even Yang, the emotional neglecting queen, noticed when Ren was pissed in V8. Plus, Nora doesn't do anything to make Cyborg back off? I know she can be oblivious at times but Nora isn't downright stupid for not seeing obviously flirting. And we all know Nora knows she loves Ren, so why doesn't she tell Cyborg she's not interested or try and reassure Ren about her feelings with him.

Now onto the last person in this love triangle, Cyborg. Can he not flirt with a girl too young for him? Stop it, get some help. If this was Teen Titans Cyborg I'd be way more lenient, but this is the New 52 Justice League Cyborg who's a grown man, stop it! Dont do what Killing Joke Batman and Comics Hal Jordan did!

Sorry this turned into less of a Ren character study and more of me bitching about the crossover, but this whole love corner made my eye twitch too badly. This was just a huge character butchering for Ren, Nora, and my boy Cyborg

Opinion on Ren?

Ahhh, Ren.

He was a good support for around six years and his volume four arc with the Nuckelavee Grimm was pretty a-okay, nothing super special, but the biggest problem with his character in the first six seasons was the lack of attention paid to him in things like not letting him grieve Pyrrha and not showing his actual friendships develop + dragging out his romance with Nora (which should've started happening in volume 4 or at the very least in V6.)

V7 muddied the waters, making Ren have this arc where everyone was supposed to be mad at him for being a horrible friend and partner because he *checks notes* doesn't tell Nora every single thing he feels as soon as he feels them and didn't feel ready to date her and didn't like being forcibly yanked into a kiss he'd just made it clear he didn't want. I was already feeling sorry for Ren in V7, but then V8 included him being the only member of the team other than Ruby to even consider 'maybe we're not doing that good maybe we're in over our heads' which was, you know, just the truth. However, all Ren got for his troubles was scolded for being such a horrible person to ever doubt their perfection. And then Ren got a semblance upgrade that let him identify people's mood, like a mood ring, and he somehow understands what every color means immediately, and I guess the only person who can feel more than one thing at a time is Winter, and I guess Ren just is intuitive enough to determine exactly what people think based off of their one single feeling - like telling Marrow doesn't want to do what he's doing just because Marrow is sad. And it's like... The dumbest most hand-of-the-author semblance until Neo's V9 upgrade, and used terribly. But apparently acquiring the semblance was enough to make Ren randomly decide he was stupid for thinking or feeling the 'wrong' things and he suddenly was just like "actually everyone is right we're perfect :) :) No one needs to confront any mistakes :) :) I was being a bad friend and partner for not immediately doing whatever Nora wanted and it was wrong of me to have any reservations about our relationship :) :) It's a good thing fearless Jaune is here to be perfect unlike me :) :) Gee I sure am glad Nora forced a kiss on me :) I was one hundred percent wrong :) So glad I stopped thinking any of us need to change :) Better start making sure I express all my emotions the way Nora does because being reserved is a sign of a bad guy :) :) :)"

I mean, what a sucky way to deal with the character. I like Ren okay but less now that he switched around in V8, and I'm really anticipating that the only thing his character will be used for from here on in is just getting together with Nora officially. I still like him, but since his type of character isn't the type of character I gravitate towards usually, I just don't find him particularly interesting with how they've handled him, which sucks because he has a lot of potential! But past being indignant on his behalf and then rolling my eyes over how he switched around to the rwbyjnor group think, I just think Ren's good-ish but not a character I really gravitate towards.

Barry’s parents backstory/relationship is more of an extreme retcon than Wally’s ever were

And--unlike Wally's parents--altering the Allen's backstory into their modern version is actually counterintuitive to Barry's character as a whole! Some context for those who don't know, but prior to Flashpoint and the rebooting of the DC universe into the New 52, the Allen's were the definition of a nuclear suburban couple with no defining features or characteristics; only ever making sparse appearances before eventually becoming recurring characters after Iris's death. However in modern times, Nora is murdered by Professor Zoom and Henry is quickly shuffled off into prison, which thereby becomes the catalyst to Barry becoming a forensic scientist.

Problem number one: Barry now has a quote-unquote "interesting" backstory. Except, that was never a focal point of his personification of the Flash, nor should it be. Barry Allen is best described as a clinically late, chronic overthinker; a pessimistically self-aware genius who frequently refers to himself as a boring, not all that appealing individual, and whose entire philosophy revolves around the concept of hope. He collects comic books and is one of those rare people who genuinely loves their job. By changing his backstory into anything other than an Americana white-picket-fence daydream, you're removing those qualities from his narrative because now his entire persona is going to be characterized by this origin point. Like, Barry's neuroses did not come from a traumatized childhood, they came from an active involvement in the superhero lifestyle and the altruism that you have to have as one, so to make it all about his parents is detrimental to his role as a hero because the root of his motivation is no longer about his altruism! Barry's story was never about getting justice for his mom and dad--that's Batman's schtick--his whole theme was about mundanity, and that simply doesn’t work with this retcon. 

Problem number two: Eobard Thawne. Logically, making Thawne a feature-focus of Barry's newly traumatic story further imbeds the two in a gripping emotional vortex of betrayal and loss and all of that nonsensical hullabaloo. But Thawne works best as a shunned villain: someone who Barry didn't even notice until the damage was already done. Thawne's conflict with Barry to begin with was that Barry was so perfect, so heroic, that when Barry paid attention to anyone but Thawne, he took it as an affront and instantly devolved Barry into his fated nemesis. Only, when Barry finally takes an active interest in Thawne, then that's when Thawne gets fucking murdered. Making it so that they're now these contrasting narrative ‘foils’ is a) devaluing Thawne’s motivation b) essentially recreating the Joker and c) not at all accurate to their canon relationship. Like, Barry never really fucked cared until Iris was murdered, but Eobard did. Too much in fact! So by switching it up so that Barry is now fully invested into tracking down his parent’s killer and bringing him to justice, it’s--again--detrimental to Barry’s character because now his sense of heroism is self-centered on the concept of justice, rather than his motivation being wholly altruistic.

And finally, problem number three: it’s not actually interesting. Genuinely I want to know what the fuck the writer’s were thinking when they retconned this, because I can only assume they simply read through Barry’s Wikipedia article before going ham to the wall. Like besties modernizing everything is not actually the brag you think it is.

I first read Animorphs when I was 9, and it’s the Vietnamese-translated version. It wasn't until recently I found the English books that I realized how much details was censored in the Viet books! Some books were left out completely, I assume because of how dark they are (no David returning, no Marco planning to kill Visser One, Nora doesn't exist, no megamorphs 3 & 4, no Jake waking up as his older self etc). The series ended with the Animorphs stepping on the Rachel! The rest was cut! (1/2)

Imagine how I felt a decade after reading the book to know that the end wasn’t the actual end! The weirdest cut was I didn’t know Tuan existed; a Viet publisher censored a Viet character (fyi Tuan is a very common Viet name). Tuan was replaced with Timmy when mentioned. My only theory for this is in the 90s, Viet kids living in the US were mostly children of refugees fleeing Vietnam after the war and were viewed negatively by Viet people living in the country (2/2)

So my American ass had no idea these books were ever published in any language but English until like 3 years ago, and this after a lifetime of reading them.  This is so fascinating to me, because I’d dearly love to know how much those decisions reflect A) the artistry of individual translators, B) the interests of publishers adapting foreign works, C) the original publishers and writers, and D) the market, or at least perceptions thereof.  If anyone who actually knows things about the children’s-book-translating industry has any insight, I’d love to hear it.

One bit of knowledge I do have: the character of Tuan was renamed Timmy during the writing of #50, but a communication error led to him being called Tuan in #52.  My guess is that the name Tuan was removed as a way of “fixing” the continuity, but you’re right that it’s a shame the only confirmed Viet character was thus removed from the Viet translation.  Many Animorphs fans resolve the discrepancy through reading Tuan as the character’s real name, and Timmy as a Westernized nickname.

This Weiss and Blake Stay after the fall AU starring Pollination (no en*bler) is just the thing I need and it gave me THE FEELS! so what are the reactions of Qrow, Tai, Raven, Ironwood, Winter, Willow, and JNR to team RWBY staying?

Qrow is pretty surprised when Blake and Weiss turn up in Patch saying they’re going to stay close to their girlfriends, but he’s pretty okay with it. When he does leave for Haven though, he tries to convince Blake to make sure the other girls stay put for a while and don’t follow him. She’s good to her word ... for a few months. Then they’re off to Mistral as well!

Taiyang is very fond of Weiss and Blake already, so he loves having them around. Especially since Yang and Ruby seem like they could need all the help they could get right about now. It’s more than once before Yang wakes up that he has to either try to move Ruby, Weiss and/or Blake from her bedside or just throw a blanket over them if it’s all three.

Raven flies past the house a couple times to check in on her daughter’s relationship and, when they’re on their way to Haven, Raven confronts Yang herself and asks if they can talk. Blake is less than willing to let her go, at least alone, so she sticks with Yang to the Branwen camp for a little bit while Weiss and Ruby hang back in case they get ambushed.

Ironwood makes a few attempts to convince Weiss to come back to Atlas with the promise of keeping her sister close by and attendance to Atlas Academy. Weiss isn’t budging, so he leaves her be after the second conversation about it. Other than that, he’s happy for them. He wouldn’t want anyone left behind in this climate, particularly not such close partners like RWBY.

Winter and Willow have very much similar reactions. They’re happy for Weiss, but they’re conflicted. She’s choosing to stay with three girls she’s known less than a year instead of come back home to her family? It’s somewhat ridiculous to them, but upon hearing of Blake and Yang being scarred mentally, they let up.

Jaune and Nora are so so SO glad that Weiss and Blake are sticking around. Ren is also happy. And when they say they’re coming along to Haven with them as well as Yang, Nora sees it as an opportunity to keep everyone she loves super close! Jaune, staying up late and training to Pyrrha’s videos, has returned to their campsites to find Blake snuggled up into Yang’s arms, Ruby telling her sister it’s all okay or Yang spooning Weiss who’s spooning Ruby while Blake is curled up facing Ruby.
