James Hunter Dirkson the Third was having a terrible day.

It was supposed to be a simple job. Go in, hold up a gala of rich people, take one or two hostages, and get out. Wait for the rest to pay up, retire to the Bahamas. Simple.

He had prepared this minutely. The society columns were full of these faces; journalists stumbling over each other to report their net worth. There was an estimated 300 mil, give or take, assembled in this room, and James intended to take his fair share of it.

He’d even made a list of preferable targets. Luckily for him, one of them was standing right in front of him as he burst into the room—just a teenager and therefore easy to subdue, but heir to a fortune, and disabled to boot.

“You!” He pointed to Tim Drake. “You’re coming with me.”

“Sure.” Drake got up with disconcerting calm. James was just about to have him wait in the door when

“Excuse me?” a kid—Damian Wayne, if James remembered correctly—got up with the haughtiest expression James had ever seen in his life. “You are taking Timothy?”

“Yes! And there’s nothing you can do about it!”

“I am aware.” Was that a sneer? “The Drakes are so nouveau-riche. Are you sure they will be able to pay up?”

Noov-Nuf-what? James was tempted to slap the brat just for using words like that. But the suggestion that he might not get the money he was counting on was enough to make him sweat. “Well, maybe I’ll take you instead, then. Thanks for volunteering.”

There was a snort. James whirled around to the source of the sound.

…oh. That sure was a big dude. For a second, James was intimidated, before he remembered that he was the armed and dangerous one here.

“Kidnappin’ a kid? That’s a bit too easy, isn’t it?”

“Easy?”

“Big man with a gun, and you walk outta here with a squirt like that?” The man shrugged. “Just sayin’.”

“I’m not a coward!”

The man raised an eyebrow. It was sheer provocation. “Oh yeah?”

James was too angry by now to remember that he had no idea who the fuck that was. “I’ll show you—go to the door—”

There was a bit of a ruckus behind them, then a crash. When they turned around, it was to find another big man tangled in what was left of the canapées and a tablecloth.

James sighed, relieved. It was just Bruce Wayne, Gotham’s most notorious klutz and, by the looks of it, drunk.

Then he considered. Someone drunk and easy to control… just what would he be worth as the figurehead of Wayne Co.

“You!” he barked. “Get over here!”

“Huh?” Wayne looked around. He seemed to have difficulties locating James. “Who’s talking?” His speech was slurred.

“Here!” James waved his gun around a bit more for good measure. “Come with me or I’ll shoot you.”

“Oh, sure. Sounds fun!” Wayne was trying to get up, but progress was slow. And then, when he was finally standing, albeit unsteadily, a younger man in a tuxedo stepped in front of him, shielding him with his body.

“No, please, he’s drunk. Take me instead. I promise he’ll pay.”

“What the…”

Oh. Dick Grayson, James remembered. Bruce’s ward, rumored to surpass him as Gotham’s most eligible bachelor.

Hm. He was very pretty. Maybe James should consider it…

Clonk.

The last thing James Hunter Dirkson the Third saw before passing out was a tiny Asian girl waving at him.

It did not improve his day.
