Alison Interview

A little thing I wrote for a prompt which was, in essence, 21 questions with your character. It was a lot of fun!

Alison wasn’t trembling when he stepped through the door to the shrink’s office this time, his breath was a little more steady than before, yet he was still sweating. He stopped in the doorway at the sight of a new addition to the room, a soda. It was the kind you’d expect to be centered in a therapist’s office. The headrest, and the way the back sloped downwards, it was clearly designed to make you want to lounge on it and create a feeling of comfort. The satin red colour of the sofa clashed with the beige of almost everything else in the room. There it was again, that sense of artificial comfort which only managed to put Alison on edge and make him shudder.

“Please,” The Shrink’s gentle tone didn’t help in the slightest. “Lie down on the couch and we can get started. Today, I’m going to ask you some simple questions, get a better sense of you as a person.”

“So,” Alison stuffed his hands into his pockets as he made his way over to the couch and tried his best to get comfortable. “What you mean is you’re going to poke and prod me for information.” The Shrink’s face dropped from a friendly smile to a frown. “I suppose, you could look at it that way, yes. I will just say that for this to work I will need you to cooperate with me. Hopefully, over these sessions we can develop some trust.” Alison didn’t respond and sat waiting for the first question to be asked, his hands still firmly in his pockets.

“Well, alright then. To start, what is your favourite colour?” Alison frowned and squinted at The Shrink across the room, searching his face for any telltale sign of delusion. “It’s to ease into things. That, and you’d be surprised how much you can learn about someone just by the small details.” “Alright,” Alison said with a sigh. “My favourite colour is green, specifically teal. It’s a calming shade.”

There was a brief moment filled with sound of fingers tapping away at a keyboard, followed by an “Mhmm” from The Shrink. “And what about your favourite food?”

“I’m partial to a good medium-raw steak. What does this have to do with anything?” More tapping away. “Patience, Mr Wood. It is a virtue after all.”

Alison’s hands had started to shake inside his pockets and he found that he needed to focus to keep his breathing from speeding up slightly. The Shrink had this odd knack for making feel like he was doing something wrong with innocent statements.

“Now, what’s your favourite band or musical artist?” “That’s a difficult question. If I had to narrow my favourites down, it’d probably be either Arzest, Hellblinde or Noizenecio.” He paused for a moment, as The Shrink had arched an eyebrow and was staring at him bemused. “Right, you wouldn’t know those names. It’s EDM, basically.” “Ah. I see. I suppose that makes sense, you have stated that you like to go to nightclubs in the past. Alright, now the questions will get a little more pressing. If at any point you feel too uncomfortable you can elect not to answer. Sound good?” Alison nodded and brought a trembling hand out of his pocket to give some semblance of a thumbs up.

“What do you do you need to unwind? Say when things get too much or you just need a moment to think.” “I used to go to this one park in Alexander, near where I live now. There was a stillness to the place which allowed me to just sit and let my thoughts wash over me. Ever since that fog showed up it doesn’t work, it seems to seep into my thoughts and I can’t relax. Now I try to paint whenever I need to just relax and wind down. “I see. You like to paint?”

“Yes, it’s a pretty nice feeling to create something that feels tangible, regardless of if it is good or not. Well, usually.” “That sort of thing is usually a good outlet. I recommend you keep it up. Do you consider yourself to be introspective?”

“No more than anyone else. We all have moments where we sit and just reflect on ourselves for a while right?” The Shrink merely nodded and gestured for Alison to continue.

“So I suppose, yes? I guess. It honestly depends. Sometimes I will sit and go over all of my mistakes, that’s the most common occurrence.” “We all make mistakes, Mr Wood, obsessing over them is no good. Tell me, what is your earliest memory?” There was a long silence as Alison pursed his lips in thought and The Shrink waited for his answer. “I think the earliest thing I can remember is when I was… four, I think. I had just drawn some little doodle in crayons or something, and my mother was really proud of it, or at least, she acted like she was. Dad didn’t really care, he was too busy working. My sister thought it was cool though.” “Can you recall what you drew?” “Not in the slightest, no.” “Shame. Is that your fondest memory, or do you have another?” There was no pause this time, Alison smiled a little and his hands stopped trembling as much.

“Oh, my fondest memory? That’d be my eleventh birthday! It wasn’t all that special, we just went out, My dad, my sister and myself, got some take out and went about the town celebrating. My sister got me a locket which we got a picture of us put in. It was the last time I can remember us all being so happy, and our relationship being less turbulent. I still have that locket.”

“Sounds like a good time, and also answers my next question of whether or not you are sentimental. Hopefully this isn’t too much of a tonal shift. You clearly suffer from atelophobia. Do you consider yourself a failure.” Alison went white as a sheet. His hands once again refused to stay still. His chest rose and fell rapidly and his entire body screamed at him to just leave. He wanted to be sick right there and then. “Next question!” The Shrink recoiled at the outburst, almost knocking over his cup of coffee. He cleared his throat and nodded.

“Of course. My apologies. Do you ever have violent thoughts?” “Well, yeah. Everyone does, right? You have a bad day, you’re all stressed out and wound up tight, and some guy decides to be an asshole so you want to just sock him right in the mouth. That’s normal, right?” “Yes, yes, that’s perfectly normal. Do you consider yourself stable?” “Next question, please.”

“Alright. What drives you, Alison? What allows you to push forward? Why are you here trying to get better?” “I want to make my sister proud of me again.” “Not your father?” “No. Fuck that asshole. I hope his business fails suddenly and he loses everything. She’s still alright. I just want to show her that I can make something of myself and try to fix things between us.” “I see. Have you considered repairing things with your father?” “Just ask the next question.” “Fine, fine. Do you think a person can change themselves, Mr Wood?”

“What?” Alison sat up in the sofa and glared at The Shrink. “What do you mean by that? Of course I fucking do! What would the point of being here be if I didn’t believe I could actually get over this and have some sort of half-way normal life? What sort of question is that?”

“Again, my apologies. I suppose I underestimated the reaction you would have to that question. If you would just calm do- Where are you going? We aren’t done.”

The only response The Shrink got was the door to his office being slammed shut as Alison stormed out, gritting his teeth and grumbling under his breath about a hack.

The q for me is how quickly this is going to devolve into a hardstyle/hardcore blog, I’d really like to avoid that if possible. This song is from a full album ALTERNA by Massive New Krew.
