The President visited Rescue Centre No. 179 of the Emergencies Ministry in Noginsk, the Moscow Region, where Sergei Shoigu presented him with a female black Labrador Retriever puppy, a gift from the rescue workers. Koni was the first of several dogs gifted to the President over the years. She used to wander into her master’s work meetings, including with foreign delegations.
When someone inquired about her recent litter of puppies in 2003 during the Direct Line Q&A session, Vladimir Putin replied that he just wanted to find them a good home. He received a great number of requests for a puppy. One went to Alexei Belevets, a pensioner from the Rostov Region, another to a six-year-old girl in Smolensk, and the remaining two puppies were given to President of Austria Thomas Klestil.

So Covert, I Hardly Knew Him
Part II | Part III | Part IV
Part I: Infiltration
Bioterrorism had finally achieved a new pinnacle of cliche for evil corporations worldwide by building an illegal testing facility in Siberia. Leon was impressed. Noginsk, a small working town on the now uninhabited Tunguska Plateau, had been abandoned when the graphite mine closed. It was a good cover. One that had taken him years to track down. Rumours of a prison where people disappeared had circulated for years.
Short of making himself a big enough nuisance to be disappeared by the powers that be, Leon had chased every seemingly insignificant lead he could. As a result, he pissed a lot of people off. Learned things he definitely shouldn’t know about people who would want to send him to Siberia to disappear.
Then one day, the rumours stopped. That was never a good sign. In his experience, silence signalled an impending apocalypse.
Two hours ago, he’d been dropped 3 miles outside the ghost town with a small pack of medical supplies, nutrition bars, a combat knife, his trusty borrowed Samurai Edge, and little to no idea of what to expect. He really needed to trade back for Matilda.
For all he knew, the testing facility was a crater in the ground or overrun with victims of a virus beyond anything they had ever encountered. Word was they had been testing a new form of the t-virus. Not something Leon was excited to tango with, but if he could get in and out, this fresh new hell would be worth it.
At least it was summer. Siberian winters were something out of a nightmare. How anyone survived in a climate that averaged .0.5°C, or 33°F as Hunnigan had so kindly pointed out, was beyond Leon. Not that Leon needed the conversion. When you hung around scientist types, whether to work with or hunt down, you quickly picked up the metric system.
But today averaged the low teens, and Leon was grateful for his jacket. He wasn’t a fan of the cold. The constant reminder of nights spent alone, trying to keep warm, in dark tunnels with monsters hunting him, always on the move with never time to sleep.
Once, he’d been dropped into a BSAA containment raid at the last minute in Northern Alberta in mid-January. He’d nearly died of hypothermia when the small convoy out of base camp was attacked by two Tyrants. Thank god for Captain do-good. The over-prepared asshole saved his life. But he’d paid Redfield back two years ago in Brazil.
After two hours of hiking through the boreal forest, Leon regretted his life choices. Sure, he’d found the somewhat inconspicuous entrance to what appeared to be an abandoned mineral processing center on the surface, but he had sweat through his t-shirt, and he refused to take off his jacket. Contrary to popular belief, his usual uniform of a biker jacket and fingerless gloves weren’t a fashion statement. Instead, his infamous leather jackets were a layer of protection between him and whatever horrors currently lay beneath him or offered enough grip to be a matter of life and death in a hostile situation gone wrong.
A pile of rubble blocked the entrance. Both a good and bad sign. It meant that even if containment had been compromised, infection had likely not breached the surface.
“I need a fucking vacation,” Leon grunted as he shouldered open to door. It didn’t budge much, but it was wide enough for his somewhat slender frame to slip through. One of those bulky BSAA boys wouldn’t have fit.
The interior was unsurprisingly dark. Leon flicked on his flashlight and raised it with his handgun to survey the rundown machines coated in years of dust. Extruders? Separators? The hell if he knew what any of the rusty, decaying machines were. That wasn’t his job.
However, security was a joke. Maybe Leon was in the wrong place. Maybe the intel was bad, and this really was an abandoned processing plant.
Leon’s tuned changed two floors down when he found corporate offices that had what must have been a decent waiting room at one point in time had no business being underground. Especially one with a complicated lockout system behind the classy secretary’s desk. That, and they definitely shouldn’t still have power, but there it was, the glow of a high-tech security pad in the gloom.
Rubbled crunched underfoot. Leon crept across the room, peaking into each office as he passed until he was close enough to study the security panel. A quick glance around the room offered no hint.
Finally, Leon sighed “here we go again,” cracked open the panel and set to work.
The key to cracking a security panel was patience, something most of the guys in his field didn’t have. They’d instead blast their way through, but Leon preferred to retain the element of surprise.
When you work alone, it’s better to be unseen. Stealth was why Leon was here, why he was still alive, and why he was the DSO’s top agent. Stealth was also the reason Leon picked up more information and dirty secrets than he’d like to know. It was how he contained infections before they spread and why he was likely on a few shit lists for more than a few agencies. It also meant twenty minutes in an uncomfortable crouch while he stripped wires to break into an abandoned base with no accurate intel and no backup.
The electronic lock yielded with the faint hiss of depressurization. Leon’s knees cracked as he pushed back to his feet, and it took a few seconds to pry the door open wide enough for him to slip through.
