NOLADrinks Show – 3-18-19 – Mezcal
We start things off letting you know what’s up on this week’s show. We also let you know about some cool events coming up in town over the next two weeks.
Then, it’s over to Agave Week, which recently took place in New Orleans, for our featured interview. Our topic this time around is “mezcal.” We discuss this special distillate from various angles and touch on several important ideas and issues.
We welcome three guests connected to mezcal producers – Brandon McCullers of Noble Coyote, Evan Meeker of Del Maguey, and Phil Minissale with El Buho and PM Brokerage. All three are highly knowledgeable and passionate about the subject.
During the chat, we touch on the variety of agave species used to produce mezcal and how they are cultivated or foraged for. We also talk about production methods and other related aspects.
Importantly, we chat about issues and challenges the industry is facing including sustainability – both agricultural and cultural, the potential to lose mezcal’s identity, and more.
Of course, we talk about their respective brands and sample a few expressions provided by our guests, as well. In our podcast-only portion, “Another Shot with NOLADrinks,” we further discuss aspects of production and agriculture, the importance of education for consumers to make good choices, and more.

Here’s a drink that Mary (follow her! @notoriousc.a.t) whipped up for me at @aloette_restaurant that will do nicely! . It’s also a great one for my American friends as this cocktail tastes quite like Thanksgiving. Mary needed something to feature in @foodismto that was fun and festive - this was that drink! . Drink: Take Three Recipe by: @notoriousc.a.t 1 oz Noble Coyote Mezcal 100% Espadin 1 oz Madiera 0.75 oz lemon juice 0.75oz spiced amarena cherry syrup 3 dashes Laphroaig quarter cask Egg white .
