Smallpox and Voodoo
“We found a voodoo doll in Lady Ye Xiu’s room with Imperial Noble Consort Nian’s name on it,” the eunuch held up the doll carefully.
“What?!” Ye Xiu’s face contorted in shock, “My room?!”
“How dare you!” The Imperial Noble Consort scolded, “What have I ever done to you?!”
“Silence!” The Emperor snapped, “I will not tolerate this behavior!”
“Indeed,” Meili-Jin mused, “What a silly trick.”
“Pardon?” The Empress asked, arching a brow, “You seem knowing.”
“Nothing special,” Meili-Jia said before taking the doll, “It’s just a silly trick. This isn’t a real voodoo doll, but some makeshift rush job someone made to scare us and divert our attention.”
“Oh? How do you know it’s fake?” Nian asked, brushing a hair from her face.
“In the village I grew up in, there was a local witch who liked to tell the children her tricks,” Meili-Jia explained, “To properly perform voodoo, one must make the doll using the target’s hair and or blood.” She took a pin out of her hair before looking at the doll.
“W-Wait! If it’s real-!” Meili-Jia didn’t wait for the Imperial Noble Consort to finish, using the pin to cut open the doll. Everyone held their breath, looking between Consort Virtue and the Imperial Noble Consort.
Meili-Jia pulled out the stuffing, no more than wool.
“Anyone would be foolish to harm Imperial Noble Consort Nian,” she said, tossing the doll at the woman’s feet, “Especially with her being pregnant. Ye Xiu is childish, but no fool. If she did make this, then she was forced and given a time limit. She didn’t have the time to look into how to make a proper doll. This is a poor attempt at scaring everyone and diverting our attention.”
“Divert?” The Emperor asked, “What do you mean?”
“Isn’t it a bit odd? Beiyu comes down with smallpox and in the same day his mother is accused of voodoo?” Meili-Jia asked, “Ye Xiu is being set up, and so is her son.”
“This is all speculation,” The Empress sighed, “Why would someone set her up?”
“You tell me,” Consort Virtue asked, “With your First Prince Beiyan dead, Beiyu is the eldest son of His Majesty. And even with Imperial Noble Consort expecting, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine Ye Xiu receiving enough favor from His Highness to rival even you. But if Ye Xiu is disposed of, even if Beiyu survives both you and Imperial Noble Consort will maintain your positions.”
“You’re saying this is a ruse, but isn’t it strange that you have knowledge of witchcraft?” Nian asked, trying to calm herself, “Who’s to say you didn’t do it?”
“Why would I bring forth my knowledge if I were guilty?” Meili-Jin countered, “Ye Xiu is my sister, and even if we disagreed, I cannot stand idly by as she is tortured.” There was a moment when no one spoke. Meili-Jia went to where Ye Xiu knelt, sobbing into her hands. She gently helped her up, straightening her hair. “The inner robes were made with material originally owned by the Empress and then given to me. I’m sure between when I made the robes and now, they were tampered with. After all, Beiyu is a few months old, children wear clothes more than once,” she spoke softly, but loud enough for everyone to hear, “If I had done something before I gave Ye Xiu the robes, both she and Beiyu would be sick.”
“Beside being grief stricken over her son, Ye Xiu seems fine,” Daijia observed, “Being around Beiyu, shouldn’t she be sick?”
“She and whoever else handled the clothing,” Meili-Jia nodded, “But I’m not knowledgeable of viruses besides smallpox being contagious. How could someone transport something like that into a place like here?”
“If someone were to put the bodily fluids of a person with the virus into a container, it may make it easy to transport,” the Imperial Physician said, “If the container is clean, the person can transport it without being sick.”
“Of course!” Guard Liwei exclaimed, “We were taught that biological warfare is often how battles between foreign nations are done quietly. Such a thing has been done before.”
“How convenient,” Meili-Jia smiled, “Imperial Noble Consort Nian, isn’t your brother one of the leading generals in the Emperor’s army?”
“What are you implying?” Suyan asked, “By having the virus here, I could be infected too! My brother wouldn’t want my baby to die!”
“But you’d benefit the most from this,” Ruyan agreed, “With the first prince dead and Beiyu out of the way, all you’d need to do is have a prince.”
“Your Highness, they’re picking on me!” Suyan looked the the emperor, “I came to check on my sister and nephew and I get accused of!”
“Be honest, you came to watch Ye Xiu be destroyed,” Daijia looked coldly, “Between having the means of transporting a deadly virus and a false voodoo doll with your name on it, how could you not be seen as the culprit?”
“That’s enough!” Lingchen snapped, “We’re spending too much time pointing fingers and not enough time finding a cure! My son’s life is on the line.”
“Of course, Your Highness,” Meili-Jia said softly, “I apologize for leading this. I just feel for Ye Xiu, no mother should go through this.”
“That’s very compassionate of you,” the Empress nodded, “Despite you two not getting along, you stand up for her.”
“Well, let’s not linger much longer,” the Imperial Noble Consort decided, “We don’t want the virus to spread unnecessarily.” With a murmur of agreement, the group left.
“Sister Ruan, wait,” Ye Xiu said, grabbing Consort Virtue’s sleeve, “Why…? Why did you stand up to me? When Consort Peace was alive, I was nothing but cruel to you.”
“Like I said, we’re sisters,” Meili-Jia said, “We may bicker and sometimes treat each other poorly, but we must stand together when others put us in danger.”
“But I wouldn’t have done that for you…” Ye Xiu wiped her tears on her sleeve, “I would have just watched.”
“Then let this be a lesson,” Meili-Jia offered her handkerchief, “In this world where we all struggle to stand out to the Emperor and kingdom, sometimes our greatest weapon is kindness.”
“I am in your debt… sister…”
Authors Notes:
WOOOOOOOOOOOO! I’ve been wanting to write something with Meili-Jia for a while! I’ve always felt badly that Ye Xiu was punished while her son was left as a ransom tool. And the male plot shows a good scenario to mess with!
For those who are wondering Liwei is Ling Ruo and Yilan’s brother. He’s actually pretty quiet and doesn’t talk very much. Not because he doesn’t have anything to say, but because he likes to observe more than interact. Unlike Meili-Jia who jumps in whenever something is amiss (well... not all the time.) Also, Meili-Jia’s thoughts about Suyan protesting against opening the doll? “It’s probably not real so whatever. And if it is? Eh, you dying wouldn’t be so bad. It’d be worth being killed.”
So, yeah! I hope you guys enjoyed!

Ruan Meili-Jia’s Relationships
Another unsolicited post about my OC, Meili-Jia. Part of the reason I decided to post this is to show that, yes, I’m still playing the game and yes, this blog is still alive. Because I made Meili-Jia for the Royal Chaos fandom and in the universe (more or less) I decided to discuss her relationships with... well... everyone.
Emperor Mu Lingchen: There is no doubt that Meili-Jia loves the emperor. Happy to be his soundboard whenever he needs to talk through things, Meili-Jia is mostly just happy to even just spend time “parallel playing” in his office (for those who don’t know, parallel play is a term in child development for when two children do individual activities beside each other by their own choosing). She’s happy to bear his children and happy to spend time with him.
Shi Quici: Meili-Jia feels betrayed by Quici, but not to the point of holding a grudge. She feels her actions are unwarranted and makes sure that Quici is banished from the palace, but she isn’t so heartless that she would kill her.
Noble Consort Nian Suyan: Meili-Jia tries to avoid the Imperial Noble Consort as much as possible and keep interactions to the very bare minimum. When she does interact, she’s polite but chooses her words and company carefully. She never is around Suyan one-on-one if she can help it.
Li Yueru: Meili-Jia didn’t have many interactions with Consort Peace very often, so she has a somewhat neutral opinion of her. Though when accused of attempting to cause a miscarriage, Meili-Jia didn’t try to argue right away. She knew that staying calm could keep her safe.
Ye Xiu: Again, Meili-Jia didn’t have many interactions with Xiu. The few times they interacted, Meili-Jia tried to be kind, but it wasn’t always well received.
Wen Ruyan: Meili-Jia considers Ruyan to be one of her best friends. She often goes to spend time with her and go on walks with her and Yunyue, enjoying their company. She finds that Ruyan is the closest thing to a sister she truly has, and is eternally grateful to have such a wonderful friend. Whenever things get rough, they often console each other.
Xiao Weizi: Meili-Jia treats all her servants well, though she has a soft spot for Wei and Yuexiu. While Eunuchs are often used for “safe erotic uses”, Meili-Jia wouldn’t dream of sleeping with Wei. In her mind, he’s like a younger brother (despite him being about four or five years older than her). She often leaves Huan (her cat) in his care.
Eldest Prince Mu Beiyan: Meili-Jia loves children in general, so of course she had a soft spot for her nephew. Sometimes she’d kiss his cheeks and give him sweets, or stand behind his teachers or mother when they were scolding him and give signs that he was okay and not to worry. She mourned deeply at his death.
Empress Xiao Lianyi: While somewhat jealous of the empress, Meili-Jia is still very respectful. Much like the Imperial Noble Consort, she doesn’t go out of her way to keep the empress company or to talk with her; however she will not try to worm her way out of a one-on-one conversation or to decline an offer to spend time together. She’s not foolish enough to test the empress’s patience... or power.
Xu Rongyuan: Meili-Jia didn’t often play with Rongyuan when she was younger, so she didn’t know him very well before coming to the palace. For a brief time, she thought he was the boy she met in ‘the secret garden’, but he explained that it was someone else. She encourages him to pursue his dreams and passions, and not force himself to do things out of “duty”.
Lord Mu Linghao (Yi): Meili-Jia is friendly with Lord Yi, but not excessively. She usually let’s the emperor speak to his brother in private, and rarely talks to Lord Yi one-on-one; not because she dislikes him or doesn’t trust him, just because she doesn’t want the emperor to doubt her.
Yunyue: Much like Ruyan, Meili-Jia is very close with Yunyue. They often spend time together and go on walks. Whenever Meili-Jia needs a logical view point on an issue or topic, she knows she can rely on Yunyue. Meili-Jia views Yunyue like an older sister, not only because she is actually older but also because she tends to help her like an older sister would.
Tong Lilou: Meili-Jia never trusted Lilou and tried to avoid her at all costs, even to the point of taking a longer route to her destination if it meant not running into the other concubine. While normally respectful, Meili-Jia would deliberately ignore Lilou and not turn to her when called or even shrug off her touch. When asked about the ‘drowning incident’, Meili-Jia simply said, “If it were a choice between dying and touching her, I’d rather die. What makes you think I’d push her into the pond if I can’t stand to even look at her, let alone touch her?”
Imperial Gourmet Fu Congzhi: Meili-Jia thinks he’s a good actor, but never spoke to him enough to have more of an opinion of him.
Song Yuanlu: Meili-Jia is aware of Yuanlu, but isn’t intimate enough with her to know much of her. At most, she thinks she is childish, despite being roughly the same age.
Princess Jingxue: Meili-Jia has much respect and admiration for the princess, and feels happy that Jingxue is willing to talk with her. Because they are close in age, Meili-Jia feels almost like they are playmates, but is careful not to be too casual. She feels happy that Jingxue loves Rongyuan, and wishes them a happily ever after.
Cheng Daijia: Meili-Jia doesn’t know much about Daijia, only that she has a “greater than thou” air about her.
Ling Yilan: Meili-Jia knows that she is a sister of Ruo, but not much besides that*
Commander Yingge: The two don’t interact much. However, Meili-Jia feels that he has a “bad aura” about him.
2nd Prince Mu Beiyu: Again, Meili-Jia is a sucker for kids, so she dotes on him much like she did Beiyan. She’s a little more gentle with him and tends to speak in a softer tone around him, because she’s seen what he’s been through.
Wen Ruqing: Because Meili-Jia is close with Ruyan, she’s delighted to meet Ruqing. Much like how Ruyan looked out for her, Meili-Jia looks out for Ruqing. She cares for both deeply and wants to be friends with both sisters.
Shu Jaihui: While wary of Jaihui, Meili-Jia is kind and respectful towards her. She doesn’t deliberately avoid her like she did with Lilou, but she doesn’t make an effort to talk to her.
*I wanted to note that while Meili-Jia is basically the PC in the female route, she is not Ling Ruo. She doesn’t have any known siblings and some of her history and behavior is different than that of Ling Ruo.
Other things I want to mention are that it’s rather difficult to get Meili-Jia to actually hate someone. Most of the time she gets irritated with people, so the fact that she genuinely hates Lilou is both impressive and that it took certain actions to get to that point.
So! Here’s some relationships that are purely for Meili-Jia.
Princess Mu Bik: Seeing as Bik is her first child, Meili-Jia is over the moon about her. With each new action, Meili-Jia gets excited. She loves cuddling with Bik and talking to her, even though Bik usually only babbles back.
3rd Prince Mu Lei: Lei was born when Bik was a year old. He’s more vocal than Bik was, and seems to have developed his father’s temperament. Often times Meili-Jia will laugh and remark to the emperor that his son is just like his father. She showers Lei in kisses and sometimes sings to him.
Huan: Meili-Jia received Huan as a gift from the emperor for one of her birthdays. Huan is a long haired seal point cat that loves to cuddle and hide in clothing. Meili-Jia often plays with him using ribbons she isn’t using or is done with.

About Ruan Meili-Jia
So, I’ve thought some things over, and I decided to actually do a bit of a backstory for Meili-Jia. I’m aware this will contradict a LOT of stuff that I’ve posted about her in the past, but it’s mostly because a lot of stuff was stuff I still was a little hazy on, but that I wanted to put down just so I could look it over and decide on it later. Please enjoy!
In a small village not to far from the palace, a woman named Ruan Chao-xing fell in love with a beautiful man from the west. He had come to China to learn about his mother’s culture, and Chao-xing was more than happy to give him the grand tour. During their time together, they explored many places, along with each other. The two declared love for each other, and the man decided to let his parents know in person that he planned to marry. He got on the earliest boat back home, but little did Chao-xing know that it would be the last time she saw the man.
A short while after, Chao-xing discovered that she was pregnant. Horrified that she would be shunned from society, she declared that it was a blessing from the gods. While no one was sure what to think, they decided it wasn’t worth getting upset about. Several months past and Chao-xing gave birth to a beautiful baby girl whom she named Meili-Jia. While it was difficult raising a child on her own, Chao-xing never felt betrayed by her daughter’s father; after all, all she needed to do was look into the girl’s green eyes which matched her father’s to see the love of her husband.
Meili-Jia was a cheerful and friendly child, happy to sing and dance with the other children, but above all else she loved to explore and go on “adventures”. During one of these explorations, she found a beautiful garden filled with the most amazing and rich flowers she had ever seen. There, she met a boy several years older than her, who briefly scolded her. While she clearly didn’t care for scolding, she decided it was worth it to ask to play. During this time, the two made garlands and sang songs and played hide-and-seek. For a short while, Meili-Jia would go back to the garden to play with the boy. But after a while, he seemed to disappear, leaving her not even with a name.
Years passed and Meili-Jia grew more beautiful. While she initially insisted on continuing to help her mother at home, both she and Chao-xing decided it would be best for Meili-Jia to become a concubine for the Emperor. Though she had nothing better to wear but her cooking clothes and her mother’s heirloom hair accessories, Meili-Jia went to the palace at just 14-years-old. Empress Xiao Lianyi dismissed her reading and writing skills, and Imperial Noble Consort Nian Suyan mocked her lowly dress, but Emperor Mu Lingchen saw something more. An earnest and gentle soul behind honest and caring eyes the color of emerald framed by long lashes. This was all it took for him to accept her in.
It didn’t take Meili-Jia to see who were her friends and who were her enemies. Regardless of who you call “sister”, there will always be someone ready to stab you in the back. But she was never alone; having her dear servants Yuexiu and Wei, along with her closest friends Wen Ruyan and Yunyue, Meili-Jia was ready for the challenge. However, even if she didn’t have her allies, she had something others didn’t- a genuine connection with the Emperor. Such connection wasn’t something that could be earned or won, which gave her a leg up. She knew that it was important to be close to Lingchen, she felt that they had a soul connection, that the gods had made her for him. But she knew that voicing such things would be foolish. She knew that she already was ahead of even the Empress in that regard, but she still needed to prove her devotion to Emperor Mu.
Time and time again Meili-Jia would prove that money meant very little to her, that gifts and flattery and even rankings were like frosting. To her, being with Emperor Mu Lingchen was more than enough. However, she received his favor nonetheless, becoming Consort Virtuous. Such ranks never went to her head, and she would take half of her pocket money and send it back to Chao-xing with a letter telling her how she is doing. Regardless of how much time went by, she never forgot her roots... nor the boy in the secret garden; to whom she is closer than she might have suspected.
