my interpretation of the Gek from No Man's Sky, using Polo as a demonstration. I like the races but to me ideally they would all be less humanoid

why have i not seen anyone talking about how fundamentally nihilist no man's sky is? like.
the entire story of the game revolves around the fact that the entire universe is ending soon and that you don't know how long you have left to live before everything you know and love is completely and utterly gone. and there is nothing anyone or anything can do to save it.
and yet the game tells you: go. explore. make the most of the time you have. discover new things and make friends and create wonders. not because they'll last, but because they won't. because the things you find and create are worth seeing even if no one will ever remember them.
and when the time comes? sit back with your buddy at the end of everything, pour yourself a drink, and toast to oblivion.
#no man's sky#no mans sky#nms#nihilism#god apollo's line of 'maybe we'll be able to share a drink after all' hit me so hard

ADHD moment, wanted to warm up before really leaning into a piece for a client and, uh, two days later I got this! I am a little less angry with myself than usual on account of REALLY liking how this one came out!

The message of friendship and love in No Man's Sky kills me every fucking time and I will Never get over it. Ever. Nada and Polo found each other and stayed with each other first as a need of staying safe and then out of love for each other and for every Traveller who needs them. Artemis just wanted to find friends to explore the galaxy with people they loved. Artemis died for love and (if the player chooses) is revived in a smaller, simpler existence, to continue doing what they love, and it is done out of a place of love. Apollo thinks friends are a cheap lie to make oneself feel better about being alone in a cold and unloving universe. But over time they learn to love you too. They learn to call you their friend. They learn that friends are vital to a complete existence. -null- just wanted to make the Atlas happy and show it their love to it in utter devotion to their purpose as an explorer and -null- was shunned for it.
The Traveller, you, brings love into a vast and colorful universe. You hear the Atlas' cry of 16, 16, 16, 16, and you have the choice to reset it in an act of mercy. Or you can turn away from it and let it run its course in order to preserve the love you've built.
No Man's Sky is about love and being loved

man, the worlds pt 1 update notes included stuff about some anomalous worlds having sentient walking buildings, but they didn't specify that you could tame and adopt them! behold, technician entity teluya's new pet. it may be absolutely gigantic and it may tower over them... but like any good pet, it wants love and treats and attention.
how do you give cuddles and scritches to an actual building?

The thing I esecially love about the views of space from the space station side rooms, other than when they are pretty, is that it really highlights how everything is *actually* placed in real simulated space. the planet isnt placed in a window view for aesthetic reasons, its that this is the direction the window is physically pointing, and the planet or other space objects happen to be physically there, and you can look at it and decide to go to it and that is the direction you would go. It's not a generated jpeg drawing info from the planet categories in the system, it's the actual view from an impersonally-placed window. The outside is the same size as the inside. Its the same feeling of physicality that you get from being able to follow an individual ship around the system and for them to be the same entitity throughout, having their own routes and decisions to land in one place or another. Makes the whole simulation feel like real toys, a real orrery that you are actually playing with. The window view reminds me of this in such a delightful way and I like to take a moment to stand in the quiet and enjoy it. you dont get that so much in any other building.

In case you've been wondering what I've been up to in No Man's Sky...

[Image ID #1: A strange creature from No Man's Sky. It slightly resembles a lizard's head with a single fin. It has a huge bulging eye, close to a chameleon's, and a small appendage on the bottom. It's floating in the air on an orange planet. Image ID #2: A screenshot of a player riding on the creature from the previous post. They barely fit and are flying under a rainbow over golden grass. /End IDs]
