‘The onus is now on us to innovate our way out of a problem we did not create.’
So says Nkwo Onwuka, founder and Creative Director of Nigerian artisanal clothing brand NKWO Official, and a pioneer of sustainable fashion on the continent. On 15 August 2024 at Workshop17 at the V&A Waterfront, the designer will headline Africa Textile Talks, an educational journey into the heart of sustainable textiles, slow fashion and design.
I have named my presentation 'The Last Square Loom'. Without giving too much away, the loom serves as a metaphor for the restrictions we impose on ourselves or that have been imposed on us and how we need to break out of these confines to build up our communities and ensure the preservation of our culture and heritage.

Have you heard of Anyanwu before? 🌞🇳🇬 Anyanwu is the sun goddess of the good fortune, knowledge, and wisdom in the traditional #igbo religion called Odinala. Her name means “eye of the sun”. It is believed Anyanwu is God’s eyes on earth as she sees the unseeable. The popular adage “Nothing can be hidden under the sun”, is rooted in the worship of Anyanwu. Anyanwu is also the goddess of productivity, sound health and well-being of her people. 📝 Community Notes: For our resident Igbo’s & a few talking points: - In some communities, Ayanwu is not considered an Alusi and is male energy instead of female - Market days: eke is Masculine: sun, orie feminine: water, afor masculine: earth, nkwo is feminine: wind (is this your understanding of the Igbo market days?) - Pronunciations are not perfect here, please if your comment is about pronunciation, simply be respectful and add the phonetic example below or a way to help 😅 basically be constructive so far we heard is like Ar-yaa-woon? - Also someone said Igbo is with the strong “gb” sound rather than “ibo” which we haven’t heard from others.

A LITERARY MASTERPIECE : DISCOVERING NEVER TO LOVE AGAIN
A unique story which transcends between friendship, love, hope and uncertainties that accompany the journey of an average Nigerian girl and her struggle to keep her commitment to the love of her life. This literal work of art, written and published in 2004 by American based Nigerian author Ngozi Onyegbule has its setting in two very contrasting places : A small intimate town in the Eastern Nigeria , and United States of America. In this novel of 18 chapters, Onyegbule, was able to deliver an African fiction in English, that promotes the culture and tradition of Nigeria just like some remarkable diaspora Nigerian based authors; the likes of Buchi Emecheta and a few others. As its name depicts , this is a story of a vow made from experiencing the rough side of westernization.
SUMMARY
Never to Love Again is a fictional story that centers on a young beautiful girl by name SYBIL AFOR, who falls in love with a promising young teacher KENNETH NKWO. Sybil, the last child of her strict and disciplined parents, gets into a committed relationship with Kenneth: the handsome, sweet and caring part time soap supplier of her mother. These two characters go through several phases to keep their relationship glued in hope to get married someday. Their many years of friendship and commitment is thrown into new and complex trials which comes with Sybil’s move to further her study abroad. Though a struggling and underpaid young teacher, Kenneth quiets his plans to study law abroad, and channels his finances and energy, to complete the traditional marriage rites for his soon-to-be bride, and also reward her with a rich send-off party. Sybil arrives the western soil, and is faced with pressure from her sister, college roommate, and the environment around her to follow the path she has ventured into: coming to America, and forget about the old path : Kenneth and their commitment. After much thinking and deliberation, Sybil drops the bombshell of breakup on Kenneth by letter, who receives it with shock and horror. Karma strikes the face of Sybil as she is asked to leave her school and the country after she was found ineligible to matriculate. Meanwhile on the other side of the world, Kenneth prepares to leave his home country, to study law. This leaves a heartbroken and deported Sybil in regret. But alas! a ray of hope appears for their relationship as Sybil receives admission from another school to start over again. Though the novel ended in a declined mood, there seems to be a sunrise to their relationship in the sequel “LOVE FORGIVES ALL SINS”
THEME: The novel has various themes laced in it, which would be of great interest to diverse readers. Some dominant themes are : Love, Peer-pressure, Doggedness, Respect, Cultural practices. And some sub-themes like : Independency, Friendship, Discipline, Courage, Fear, Early Detection can also been found. With makes it a jungle of many emotions and thoughts.
SETTING: Employing different places and cultures, the general setting of the novel is the late 20th and early 21st century. The movement of the characters also juggle from the western setting to the Nigerian setting.
PLOT: The plot, which is very much arranged and beautifully intertwined, graduates into the themes, characters and setting. So it’s safe to say that the plot is well planned.
ANALYSIS
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: The rise and use of each character, shows that the author, carefully thought of each one, and their role-play before infusing them to the plot. The main/ round characters which are Sybil, and Kenneth, touched every aspect of their role with precise and accurate details. There are some stoic and flat characters who played their role perfectly without absorbing change like : Victoria Sybil’s sister, Rosario Perez, Anthony, Bethrand and host of others.
LANGUAGE AND WRITING STYLE : The author employs the use of Narrative and Descriptive style to tell this story. The use of figure of speech is also dominant, and it can be seen is some examples like : “one hundred feet long” ( line 3,page 124) which is used to describe the veil of a bride. “All hands were on deck” (line 2,page 122) “Marching to the altar” ( line line 5,page 119) “Small lord” ( page 101) . The author also makes use of the Omniscient point of view style to illustrate the various aspects of the book.
STRENGTHS: The greatest strength of Never too Love Again, is its accuracy and powerful illustrations of the people’s cultural practices, the different ways people see or accept the cultural practice amongst them. The fact that a lot of people would be able to relate to this story because of its authenticity and it vibe, is a major strength of this book. When you line the background and personality of the author with his fictional work of art, you would see that the author has had ample experience of both cultures, so it’s safe to say he knows what he is writing about.
WEAKNESS: The dominant weakness of this book, it’s in its typesetting. The absence of quotation marks in this book, is what makes it weak. This makes it harder for readers to differentiate between the characters speech from normal writing. This is a major weakness because it would take a longer process to read and accumulate.
IMPACT: Never to love again, has recorded significant progress and awards in United States, due to the diasporic nature of the author. But discoveries that are about to be made about this novel, would soon throw it into National archives and collections.
CONCLUSION
My dear book readers and lovers, you just have to add “Never to Love Again” to your TR ( To Read ) list, because a journey through the cultural display and the rollercoaster emotions in this novel, is worth every glance. Remember, be patient and make sure you savor each chapters essence.
I wish you a lovely read,

Now let us get the origin of the 4 Market days in Igbo Tradition. The 4 market days comprises the EKE, ORIE, AFOR and Nkwo who is the last born child, they were originated from NRI during the region of Eze Nrijiofor 1 (1300-1390 AD) and the Fifth on the chronology of the Nri traditional throne or Succession. During this period, 4 wise men visited the palace of Eze nrijiofor and pretended to be deaf and dump and never said their names nether their mission to the palace on arrival, each came with Nkata which literally means Basket, they were taken to the visitors chamber by the Adamma who was the king's servant, later in the evening, the Eze Nrijiofor went to see them but they didn't respond warmly to him and also didn't acknowledge his greetings. Oji (kolanut) was presented to them but they didn't alter a word in acceptance or rejection of the kolanut (oji), late in the night, Eze nrijiofor 's soothsayer sent a rat to disturbed their sleep when the rat went to the first basket belonged to EKE and started to nibble at it, Orie woke up and called " EKE wake up! A rat is trying to get your basket" eventually, EKE woke up the rat ran away, the rat repeated the trickish manner to other baskets to ascertain their names "Anuta Akara Eze". In the morning, Eze nrijiofor went to them and started performing the Oji ututu on that process, he mentioned their names by saying Eke taa oji, Orie taa Oji, Afor taa Oji and Nkwo taa Oji respectively, the visitors who were referred to as "Ndi biala eji ekwu okwu" were astonished and request for water to wash their hands and faces and accepted the kolanut offered by Eze Nrijiofor, after chewing the kolanut, they brought out ITE Ano ( four earth pots) to the king and directed him to keep them in front of NRI MENRI SHRINE outside the Obi or Obu (Palace) with each pot facing the Sun raise, EKE who was the spokesman told Eze Nrijiofor 1, that the pots were Sent down from Chukwu (God Almighty) He instructed Eze Nrijiofor and His people whom he ruled to observed those names daily as market days, during which they will be buying and selling. These market days are used in Igbo land to count IZU (Igbo native week) these four market days marks one Izu (1 week) in Igbo Calender. Tanks for hearing this history, I love u all.

Two ancestor’s figures, Nne Nkwo and Nnade Nkwo, in the ancestral shrine house, Mma obu (ancestor-rest house), for Agbogo ward, Mgbom village, Afikpo Village-Group, Nigeria.Nne Nkwo (mother of Nkwo) and Nnade Nkwo (father of Nkwo), in the rest house (obiogo) of Agbogo Ward, Mgbom Village. These figures represent ancestors of the ward and village. The dress and paint are renewed from time to time, but it does not appear ever to be sacrificed to. The rest house, called obiogo (obu ogo), is found for each ward in Mgbom and other villages as a rule. It is where, at the date of this research, masks of the men’s society and other paraphernalia were stored.— Simon Ottenberg, 1951-53.

Umahi to Peter Obi: You don’t speak for Igbo, as South-east residents shun protest, open markets
….Enugu, Abia, Imo residents stay indoors …Businesses shut in Ebonyi All markets, stores and artisans’ shops in Nnewi, the industrial town of Anambra and Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra State, opened for business as traders and youths shunned the #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest that started yesterday across the country. As usual, as early as 6:30 am, commercial buses and tricycle movements were noticeable on the roads and streets in Nnewi and Onitsha, conveying traders and artisans to their respective markets, stores and shops in the towns. Ndigbo had severally made their opposition known on the planned protests or 10 days of rage that started yesterday.Anambra State markets’ leaderships have assured that none of the markets would be shut down during the #EndBadGovernance protest ongoing across the country. There was normalcy in Onitsha and Nnewi, both commercial hubs of the state and other environs with filling stations and banks opened and transporters hustling for their daily bread. To douse the tension already generated by the protest, particularly among the traders and customers, Innocent Ezeoha, Chairman of Onitsha Main Market said the Igbo are not part of it. “You can see that the shops are open for business and traders and customers going about peacefully. “There is normalcy here. We are not part of the protest. We are already suffering hardship and staying at home doing nothing and pouring out on the streets to protest will not be the best option.“ We want government at all levels to do the needful. They should also help traders by ensuring a conducive environment for business to thrive in the country.” James Oraka, a trader at Nkwo Nnewi Market said protests have never solved social problems in the country, adding: “We, the Igbo don’t want to be part of the protest because other tribes will say we engineered it at the end. We are learning from history.” At the filling stations visited, the fuel pump attendants were busy dispensing the product to prospective customers. Other business activities are moving with security operatives doing their normal duties and no harassment of people. One Igbo vocal group that made their opposition categorically clear on the protest is the United Igbo Elders Council, UNIEC, Worldwide, and their stand, according to a statement they issued, yesterday is “based essentially on the differential attitude to human rights that the organisers have shown towards the Igbo/East in particular, and other Nigerians as well.” UNIEC, in the statement signed by its Director, Media and Publicity, Prof. Obasi lgwe, and its Coordinator General, His Lordship Alpha Justice, said: “The loud silence, signalling acquiescence of some of its organisers to the extremely targeted injustices against the Igbo/East and for the last nine years, orchestrated killings with countless evidences of official involvement or connivance with no sympathy from anywhere, baffles the imagination. ”UNIEC’s statement entitled, Rage or Protest in Nigeria: Position of the United Igbo Elders Council, UNIEC, Worldwide, rather made a 10-point demand on Mr President to stabilise Nigeria instead of supporting the protest. Some of the demands included the immediate lifting of the economic and ports blockade against the Igbo/East, imposed since 1967 and subsisting till today, by which Port Harcourt, Bonny, Opobo, and other Eastern ports were rendered inutile, except for oil purposes, compelling the Igbo to divert en masse to Lagos to conduct their maritime businesses. You don’t speak for Igbo, Umahi tells Peter Obi Meantime, Minister of Works, David Umahi, has lambasted Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023 election, saying he is not the mouthpiece for the Igbo. Umahi added that Obi should refrain from allegedly inciting the youths of the South-East against the administration of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the planned August 1 protest. Umahi spoke, Wednesday, during the Ebonyi State Youth and Stakeholders Summit at the Christian Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki. “Let me make this clear: Mr. Peter Obi does not speak for Ndigbo. Our governors, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and our traditional rulers are our leaders; they speak for us. Let the enemies of Ndigbo hear this loud and clear: our governors and Ohanaeze Ndigbo are the mouthpieces of Ndigbo. Read the full article
