Doha Moto3: Acosta converts pitlane start to maiden victory by 0.039s
Tumblr media
Acosta, along with six other riders, were slapped with pitlane starts for irresponsible riding in FP2 on Friday – but the Ajo KTM rookie carved through from nine seconds off the rest of the pack on lap one to score one of the most sensational wins in grand prix history.
Binder grabbed the holeshot off the line from sixth on the grid, the Petronas Sprinta Honda rider one of only a handful to gamble on the soft rear tyre.
In typical Moto3 fashion, the slipstream effect down the Losail circuit’s main straight meant the lead changed hands constantly as Binder shared first with the likes of Tatsuki Suzuki, Andrea Migno, Filip Salac, Gabriel Rodrigo, Jeremy Alcoba and Kaito Toba.
The lead group did not thin out as the race entered its later stages, where chaos ensued.
Binder was squeezed out wide by his team-mate John McPhee at Turn 1 on lap 11, dropping the South Africa to 14th, while Alcoba engaged with Tech3’s Ayumu Sasaki for the lead.
Andrea Migno blasted his Snipers Honda to the head of the pack at the start of the following tour, while team-mate Salac’s race came to an end following contact with with Sasaki at Turn 2 on the next lap.
Drama struck at Turn 1 at the start of lap 15 when Gresini’s Alcoba clattered into the rear of Binder and was thrown off his Honda, the bike smacking a helpless McPhee and taking him out of the race.

The incident and McPhee’s violent outburst in the gravel afterwards is currently under investigation.
Qatar GP winner Jaume Masia emerged from the chaos of lap 15 to lead on the following tour, while team-mate Acosta worked his way through the top 10 having worked his way from the pitlane.
Acosta led over the line to start the final lap and tried to pull away from Binder behind, though the Petronas Sprinta rider reeled him back in come the end of the tour.
The 16-year-old rookie nailed his run out of the final corner and claimed his first grand prix victory by just 0.039s from Binder.
Niccolo Antonelli completed the top three on the Avintia KTM, pipping Migno and Toba, while Aspar GasGas rookie Izan Guevara recovered from a heavy fall in warm-up to finish sixth.
Sasaki slipped to seventh at the chequered flag, with Ryusei Yamanaka (Prustel GP) heading Masia after the Ajo rider had contact with Rodrigo on the last lap.
Max Racing’s Romano Fenati also came from the pitlane to complete the top 10, while Rodrigo came away with 13th for Gresini after his clash with Masia.
Having served a double long lap penalty for a collision in the Qatar GP, Leopard rookie Xavi Artiga was taken down by Avintia’s Carlos Tatay late on.
Acosta now leads the championship by nine points over Binder heading to the Portuguese GP in two weeks’ time.

Game Recap | Behind Redick's Perfect 10, Team Leaves Shanghai With Win
Snapshot:
JJ Redick’s shooting performance Friday in Shanghai was quite literally a Perfect 10.
There really isn’t much more of an apt way to describe it.
Coming off the bench for the third time in as many pre-season games, the 13-year veteran knocked down all 10 of his attempts from the field in the 76ers’ (3-0) 120-114 win over the Dallas Mavericks (1-1) in the opener of the NBA China Games series. Seven of his baskets were three-pointers.
The most notable of the bunch came late in the first half, on a heave from the corner. Not only did Redick make the shot, he was drew a foul in patented fashion, too, and converted the ensuing free throw.
The four-point sequence gave the Sixers their first lead since the opening two minutes of play, and set the club on course to successfully erasing what had once been a 15-point deficit.
Redick ended the evening with a game-high 28 points in 21 minutes. He also added four assists.
“You wished those games would count in the regular season,” said Redick, who was questionable going into Friday’s game because of gastroenteritis. “It was just one of those days, I could tell doing my pre-game shooting, the ball was just getting to my pocket really easy. When you have that feeling, it just feels effortless, it’s not a lot of wasted motion. I just felt if I could get a clean look, it was going to go in.”
That’s indeed what happened.
“The way he shot it, that is an elite JJ Redick performance, even by his standard,” Brett Brown said.
For the second time in as many outings, Landry Shamet got into the act in a productive, positive way. With some stellar sharpshooting of his own, this year’s no. 26 overall pick contributed to the Sixers’ comeback cause.
He notched 16 points before the break, en route to finishing with 18 points overall, and along with Redick, accounted for 35 of the Sixers’ 64 points by halftime.
The Sixers hit 16 triples Friday, relying on the longball to build a lead as large as 12.
Joel Embiid set a pre-season high by scoring 22 points (8-17 fg), and has now reached the 20-point mark in all three of his exhibition appearances. He brought down 10 boards as well to earn his second double-double of the fall.
Ben Simmons had a good night, with nine points (3-4 fg), 10 assists, and nine boards in 27 minutes, while Markelle Fultz tallied four points (2-7 fg), three assists, and three steals.

Notable Nuggets:
Showing Shanghai Some Love
After the Sixers took part in an entertaining, competitive game Friday in front 18,000 engaged fans at a sold out Mercedes Benz Arena, the team’s appreciation for its host city was on full display.
“Thank you very much,” Brett Brown said to a group of local Chinese reporters. “You have a beautiful city.”
The head coach’s two starts echoed those sentiments.
“The fans have been amazing, and tonight was great,” said Joel Embiid, who, according to Ben Simmons, threw out the idea that the NBA should do All-Star Games in China.
“This is my second time back this year,” Simmons said.
The reigning Rookie of the Year called the Chinese fans some of the best he’s ever played in front of.
“I think it’s always a great opportunity for the team to come out here, great bonding experience, and obviously show the fans the way we play.”
Game Speak
With 90 seconds to go in Friday’s first quarter, the Sixers were in a tough place, trailing by 15 points, 35-20, and in need of a spark.
While JJ Redick and Landry Shamet would eventually help turn the tide of the game back in the Sixers’ favor, Brett Brown acknowledged afterwards there are some things his group needs to clean up.
“I thought our defense was really being challenged by Dallas. They forced into some uncomfortable situations. I think the main thing that we take away from tonight defensively is that we fouled too much. We have to do a better job of basically moving our feet and showing our hands.”
All said and done, Dallas was awarded 40 foul shots.
Defining the “P” in “MVP”
Following Friday’s game, Brett Brown was asked about Joel Embiid’s ambition to win this year’s MVP award. This was Brown’s response:
“Wanting to be MVP? That’s ‘Most Valuable Person.’ He is our leader. That’s what interests me the most, is cultivating Joel, and Ben [Simmons], as leaders. That’s MVP - ‘Most Valuable Person.’”
‘Gram of the Game:
It was an instant viral classic, after the big man inadvertently bopped a fan on the head.
Up Next:
The Sixers and Mavs will do it again, this time on Monday at 8:00 AM EST in Shenzhen. Considered one of China’s leading tech hubs, the city is located about eight hours driving time (two hours flying) farther down the country’s eastern coast from Shanghai. The contest will close out both the 2018 NBA China Games, and the Sixers’ pre-season schedule.

LeBron's 38 Points, Team Defense Vault Lakers Past Pacers
A once-24-point lead had evaporated down to just one with five minutes left. Enter the world’s greatest player.
LeBron James was in closer mode on Thursday night, scoring or assisting on all of the Lakers’ final 15 points, as they skated past Indiana, 104-96.
James was a one-man force, dropping 38 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. And while he took over the final five minutes, he felt that he struck a good balance between seizing the game and allowing his teammates to take the reins.
“That’s the challenge … that I’ve kinda been battling with since the season started,” James said. “How much do I defer to some of our young guys to try to [let them] figure it out? How much do I try to take over games? I think tonight was one of those instances where they looked at me and they wanted me to close the game.”
James and his teammates were scorching from the start, ending the first quarter with a 23-point lead — the largest by the Lakers in the opening period since 2004. The defense was particularly impressive, as Indiana shot just 5-of-25 from the field in that frame.
But the Pacers (13-9) came roaring back, even taking a three-point lead midway though the third quarter. But the Lakers (12-9) settled down from there, responding with an 11-2 run capped by a triple from Josh Hart (an indirect result of James’ playmaking).
Tumblr media
“We just focused on getting stops and converting on the offensive end and executing,” Hart said. “That was the main focus. Nobody was panicking.”
Hart was reliable throughout the night, scoring 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Despite being hampered by a recent ankle sprain, he was excellent defensively, snagging three steals and shadowing Doug McDermott throughout a conveyer belt of screens.
“Man, I told [McDermott] to stay in the corner, and then he did not do it,” Hart said. “… Definitely gave me confidence running around with him. It felt good. Was definitely a good test [of the ankle].”
The teams traded blows from there, with Indiana chipping the Lakers’ lead down to 89-88 with less than five minutes remaining. Then it was LeBron’s time to put the game away.
The Lakers finished on a 15-6 run, with James providing 12 points and assisting on a Kentavious Caldwell-Pope 3-pointer.
LeBron began his personal onslaught with a triple, punishing the Pacers for going under on a screen. He then went to work inside the arc, adding a spinning, and-1 layup and a couple tough mid-range buckets.
Tumblr media
“He knows when those times are and he’s good at that,” coach Luke Walton said. “… Fourth quarter time, he did his thing. But we’re continuing to grow to where it’s not just him all the time.”
While James was the unquestioned leader of the victory, it took a roster-wide effort to keep Indiana from completing its unlikely comeback.
The Lakers held the Pacers to 37.2 percent shooting from the field. Kyle Kuzma, Tyson Chandler, Lonzo Ball and JaVale McGee all had at least eight rebounds.
“Josh Hart gave us an incredible spark off the bench and LeBron was spectacular,” Walton said, “but we got a lot of really good efforts from different people, and that’s what it takes to win in this league.”
Notes Walton and Spectrum SportsNet’s broadcast team honored the memory of the late Craig Sager by wearing ostentatious suit jackets. … Domantas Sabonis led the Pacers with 20 points and 15 rebounds. … The Lakers outscored Indiana in the paint, 58-38. … Miguel, Kate Beckinsale and Andy Garcia were among the sold-out crowd.

From Bitconnect to SIM-Swap Swindling: 2018's Biggest Scams
Tumblr media
This post was originally published here
Tumblr media
2018 will long be remembered as the start of a significant cryptocurrency bear market, but the declining market still provided opportunities for scam artists to snag unwary investors.
Given that 2017 was a breakout year for Bitcoin (BTC) and the likes, investors were clamoring to enter the fray as the price of cryptocurrencies skyrocketed toward the end of the year.
With such a positive environment, businesses and developers looked to leverage blockchain technology for new projects, leading to a boom of new initial coin offerings (ICO) that has collectively raised more than $20 billion since the beginning of 2017.
This provided the right atmosphere for more nefarious individuals to set up scam operations looking to fleece unsuspecting victims.
The modus operandi varied from project to project, but there was no shortage of conventional multi-level marketing and pyramid schemes, as well as pump-and-dump operations.
As the year has come to a close, it is worthwhile to take a look at some the biggest scams of 2018, as well as some of weirdest and outright ridiculous schemes.
Bitconnect falls
Bitconnect will go down as one of the biggest scams the crypto world has ever seen, but the shady project saw its eventual end at the beginning of 2018.
Thousands of investors were duped by the platform, which promised impressive returns on a lending scheme using its own native token.
The concept was fairly simple: Investors would trade in Bitcoin in return for Bitconnect Coin (BCC), which they could then lend out at varying rates of return in interest.
Bitconnect’s lending platform led to accusations of the platform being a Ponzi scheme, which in time led to a cease-and-desist order being issued by United States regulators.
What further drove concerns around the legitimacy of the operation was the referral system and the anonymous ownership of the company.
The worst fears were realized when the anonymous creators of the program sold their coins and made off with the reserves of BTC — leading to class action lawsuits from a number of affected investors.
The scale of Bitconnect’s influence spanned across several continents, leaving investors around the world dealing with losses.
Pump me up!
As recent research from the Social Science Research Network suggests, price manipulation of various projects is still rife among the cryptocurrency community.
Culprits make use of messaging applications like Discord and Telegram to orchestrate price hikes of certain crypto tokens in order to sell their own holdings for a profit.
According to the findings, researchers identified 1,051 and 3,767 pump-and-dumps schemes on Discord and Telegram respectively, indicating just how prevalent this illegal practice has become.  As per current regulations, this practice amounts to securities fraud under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Seсcurities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
While many of these schemes targeted a variety of altcoins, Bitcoin was not immune to orchestrated buying groups operating through various chat groups.
The research identified at least 82 pump schemes targeting BTC on these two apps in 2018, although that amounted to just over 1 percent of total pump signals.
Social media shenanigans
Social media networks have also become a crucial tool for criminals to prey on unwise investors.
A prime example was the hacking of verified Twitter accounts that were then used to promote fraudulent money-raising schemes.
The latest instance saw a number of accounts impersonating Tesla founder Elon Musk, promoting a Bitcoin fundraising scheme.  One of these Bitcoin wallets used in the scam raised over $150,000, showing how many people fell for the authenticity of a “verified” account.
It certainly wasn’t the first time hackers had taken control of prominent accounts in 2018. At the beginning of the year, Litecoin founder Charlie Lee had a number impersonators setting up accounts on Twitter, promoting fake LTC giveaways.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov was also a victim, as a number of accounts looked to take advantage of some downtime of the Telegram app, setting up fake accounts offering crypto giveaways for their support.
Sim-swapping whiz kid nabbed
19-year-old Xzavyer Narvaez made headlines in August, after he was identified as the perpetrator of an elaborate sim-swap heist that saw more than $1 million worth of BTC stolen.
According to reports, the teen stole phone numbers and used them to gain access to the social media and financial accounts of his victims. He would do this by performing a “sim-swap” in order to take control of accounts on his own devices.
Investigators allege that Narvaez’s Bittrex crypto wallet had received over 157 BTC between March and June 2018.
Narvaez faces charges on four counts of using personal identifying information without authorization; four counts of altering and damaging computer data with intent to defraud or obtain money, and grand theft of personal property of a value over $950,000, according to court documents.
If not for his flashy spending of his ill-gotten gains, which included the purchase of a McLaren sports car, and his brazen use of the same device to process over 20 sim-swaps, Narvaez may have gotten away with his crimes.
The purchase of the $200,000 vehicle, which was made using BitPay, also helped authorities build a case against Narvaez.
Narvaez is not the only perpetrator to be arrested for stealing large amounts of crypto through the use of sim-swaps.
According to Krebs On Security, police arrested a man in August believed to be part of a cross-state syndicate involving nine suspects that used sim-swapping to steal large amounts of cryptocurrencies from his victims.
Vietnamese investors swindled by iFan, Pincoin
In April 2018, news broke of a massive ICO scam that had affected 32,000 investors in Vietnam.
The fraud was touted as one of the biggest to affect the crypto community, as $660 million of investors’ money had been stolen by two separate ICOs, run by a parent company in Ho Chi Minh City.
Modern Tech operated two projects, iFan and Pincoin, which duped investors before they could alert authorities. The owners liquidated the company and vacated their offices in the city by the time affected investors lobbied to get their money back.
iFan was touted as a social networking platform for celebrities to promote content and merchandise to fans around the world.
Modern Tech was promising users in Vietnam 48 percent returns monthly for iFan tokens, but they had to make an initial investment of $1,000. Furthermore, users were given an 8 percent commission for referring new investors.
Pincoin, an ERC-20 token powering the PIN project, promised users up to 40 percent monthly return on investments on the landing page of the website. The project promised to build an online platform powered by cryptocurrency and blockchain to provide an advertising network, auction and investment portal, and peer-to-peer (p2p) marketplace, among other offerings.
GAW, Paycoin Ponzi operator jailed
After a protracted legal battle, Homero Joshua Garza, the CEO of now defunct GAW miners and Paycoin cloud mining, was sentenced to 21 months in jail in September 2018. His offences date back to 2015, when he was found guilty of running Ponzi schemes.
Both projects were setup that year, but within months, GAW was accused of being a Ponzi scheme, leading to its closure in 2015.
The developers of GAW also created Paycoin, a cloud-mined cryptocurrency.
Taiwanese scam outed by Finnish investor
In August 2018, Taiwanese authorities acted on information $24 million crypto scam that had taken advantage of wealthy offshore investors.
Thai citizen Prinya Jaravijit was detained in August by authorities, suspected as the main culprit in the investment scam targeting Finnish investor Aarni Otava Saarimaa and his Thai business partner Chonnikan Kaewkasee.
The pair had alerted authorities after they’d failed to receive dividends from investments made with Jaravijit and nine other suspects.
The investors believed that their $24 million would be pumped into the casino- and gambling-focused cryptocurrency Dragon Coin (DRG). After parting ways with the funds, the pair never received any dividends from the so-called investment, a proof of investment in DRG, nor were they invited to shareholders meetings.
The case gained international attention when Jinya’s younger brother, Jiratpisit “Boom” Jaravijit, a well-known soap-opera actor, was detained in August.
Sniffing out the perpetrators
While the number of fraudulent operations may be startling, there seems to have been some real success by authorities looking to take action and protect investors.
U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission chairman Christopher Giancarlo said the organization had seen an increase in the amount of actions and fines taken against fraudulent projects, including the cryptocurrency sector.
“We have not been shy to take these cases to trial, winning significant trial victories in this area over the past year — including a precedent setting victory in a trial involving Bitcoin (BTC) fraud.”
While financial regulators and authorities may have been dishing out fines, conventional authorities made a number of high-profile arrests during the course of the year, as Cointelegraph has previously reported.
Some of the ring leaders have been included in this article, but these arrests show that even the anonymous characteristics of cryptocurrencies can’t completely hide the paper trails of illicit activities.
As regulators gain a better understanding of the ins and outs of cryptocurrencies and ICOs, the prevalence of these types of crimes could very well drop.
However, these stories show that investors need to be cautious with their crypto and make sure that due diligence is done when investing.

10+ Of The World's Most Incredible Fountains
10+ Of The World’s Most Incredible Fountains
Many of you have probably heard of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, and you’ve probably seen the famous Bellagio Fountain in Las Vegas, either in person or while watching the movie Ocean’s 11.
While there’s no doubt that these are both spectacular sights to behold however, they only represent a small percentage of the incredible fountains that you can currently find around the world. From Stockholm…

Chuck's Daily Check In - 1.19.19
GAME NIGHT FROM THE UNITED CENTER: Miami (21-22, 10-10 on the road) at Bulls (10-35, 5-16 at home). TV: WGN: Neil Funk and Stacey King: 7PM CT tip. RADIO: 670 The Score: Chuck Swirsky, Bill Wennington, Steve Kashul: 6:45 CT pre.
LEADING SCORERS: Bulls: LaVine: 22 ppg. Miami: Richardson: 17 ppg. LEADING REBOUNDERS: Bulls: Carter, Markkanen, Portis: each 7 per game. Miami: Whiteside: 12 per game. LEADING ASSISTS: Bulls: Dunn: 6 per game. Miami: Richardson and Wade: 4 per game.
LAST MEETING: November 23, 2018 in Chicago. Miami 103, Bulls 96: Josh Richardson was the main man in the fourth quarter scoring 12 of his 27 points. Hassan Whiteside had a double-double of 18-10 but was a spectator at crunch time as Miami went small. The Bulls trailed by 21 at half but got back in the game before Richardson took over.
CCI PREVIEW: The Bulls return to the United Center desperate for a win having dropped nine straight overall. The Bulls play well in spurts but just can't seem to find consistency. No team plays a full 48 of error-free ball, but the Bulls go through scoring droughts or opponents have had their way going on long runs of their own. Jabari Parker is ballin' for the Bulls averaging 14 points and 6 rebounds, shooting 63% the past two games. Chandler Hutchison has three straight double-figure scoring games, shooting 60% from the floor in that span. Lauri Markkanen has nailed eight three-point field goals the past two games.
The Heat played last night in Detroit and lost to the Pistons sending the Heat to under .500 for the first time since December 30. The Heat fell to the seventh seed in the EC as the red hot Nets beat the Magic to jump over Miami for the sixth spot. They're a bit banged up but who isn't? Goran Dragic is out with a knee injury. Dwayne Wade's last appearance in Chicago as an NBA player. He spent one season with the Bulls and it was a pleasure watching him play nightly. Congratulations on a fabulous career.
CARTER UPDATE: Wendell Carter Jr. sustained a left thumb injury in the game at the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 15. A MRI was performed the next day in Los Angeles, with the initial diagnosis of an acute on chronic thumb sprain. He was examined today by Bulls hand specialists, Drs. John Fernandez and Mark Cohen. Repeat physical examination, testing under live fluoroscopic XR, and review of all tests determined the extent of the thumb injury and associated instability. Surgery is recommended with an anticipated recovery and return to sport time of 8-12 weeks.
Golden State 112, Los Angeles Clippers 94: Boogie Cousins made his Warriors/season debut. For the first time since 1976, five All-Stars took the floor wearing the same uniform. Cousins scored 14 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished out 3 assists before fouling out in 15 minutes. The Warriors have won seven straight.
Detroit 98, Miami 93: The Heat have dropped three straight road games. Detroit with back-to-back wins for the first time since December 1st. Blake Griffin 32-11-9.
Boston 122, Memphis 116: The Celtics have won eight straight home games for the first time since 2015-16. Kyrie Irving scored 20 of his 38 points in the 3rd quarter. Memphis has lost six in a row and 10 of 11.
Brooklyn 117, Orlando 115: The Nets rallied from 21 down, their biggest come from behind win in the Brooklyn era. The Nets are a game over .500 and have won 17 of 21. D'Angelo Russell tied his career high with 40 points, 16-25 FG, 8-12-3s, 7 assists and just one turnover. He's playing like an All-Star.
San Antonio 116, Minnesota 113: Aldridge and Gay combined for 51 points. Gregg Popovich picked up his 520th road win tying Pat Riley for most ever by a head coach. The Spurs have beaten the T-Wolves 16 of the last 18 games. Minnesota has lost three of four games.
Utah 115, Cleveland 99: The Jazz have won six straight and eight of nine. The Cavs own the worst record in the NBA at 9-37.
Portland 128, New Orleans 112: The Blazers collected 18 offensive rebounds. Lillard, McCollum and Layman all hit the 20-point mark. The Pels fell to 21-25 - four games out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the WC.

Cubs Historical Heroes and Goats, part 22
Despite dropping two of three to the Dodgers to finish the last homestand, the Cubs managed four wins in seven games. That pushed their recent string of success to 14 wins in 22 games. That had them back knocking on the door to first place.
This next challenge would be a big one though. A three-city, nine-game trip. All three stops against teams with winning records. Two of those teams fighting you (and each other) for one playoff spot. It would be a huge ask to win five or more on the nine game trip. But even just a half game out of first place, and with no juggernaut in division, you still had to think four wins was pretty much the floor.
The team absolutely had to keep itself within striking distance of first place. After this trip, the Cubs would have 30 games remaining and 17 of them would be at home. With three teams bunched up this late in the season, the finish figured to be chaotic. Let’s get right to the action.
Game 124, August 19: Cubs 8 at Astros 12 (64-60)
And the trip starts with a thud. Matt Clement was rocked for eight runs in four innings of work. That after be staked to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first. Unfortunately, that poor performance, wasted an 11 hit attack from the Cubs offense that included three home runs. Jeff Kent was the main culprit in this one. He had three hits including a homer and six RBI on the day. in 236 career starts, Matt only had three in which he allowed more runs than he did in this start.
Aramis Ramirez was signed as an international free agent by the Pirates in 1994. He reached the majors in 1998. In parts of seven seasons with the Pirates, Ramirez was a fairly ordinary player (.261/.311/.433). After coming to the Cubs, all of that changed. In nine seasons as a Cub, Ramirez had a line of (.294/.356/.531). He slugged 239 home runs in a Cub uniform and drove in 806 runs. In his 18 year career, he had 2,194 games played, 8,986 plate appearances, 386 homers, and 1,417 RBI. He played in three All-Star games and received MVP votes in five different seasons. He won a Silver Slugger award. Ramirez remains one of the best Cubs third basemen ever.
Three Heroes/Three Goats:
Superhero: Aramis Ramirez (.272). Another fine Ramirez game goes to waste. This time he had two hits and a walk. One of those three hits was a three-run homer with two outs in the first.
Hero: Moises Alou (.167). Moises had a homer, a walk, scored twice and drove in two runs.
Sidekick: Ramon Martinez (.065). Martinez had two hits and a walk.
Billy Goat: Matt Clement (-.611). This was the fourth worst WPA score of the year for the Cubs. He allowed eight hits, four walks and eight earned runs in four innings of work. He struck out three.
Goat: Damian Miller (-.132). Miller had just one walk in four plate appearances. He also struck out once.
Kid: Sammy Sosa (-.109). Sammy was hitless in five at bats.
Game 125, August 20: Cubs 6 at Astros 0 (65-60)
Mark Prior continued to dazzle with seven shutout innings. Former Pirate teammates Aramis Ramirez and Randall Simon each homered and combined to drive in five runs to lead the Cubs offense. Randall had come to the Cubs in a trade on August 17. The Pirates got Ray Sadler in return, a Double-A outfielder. Randall was perhaps best known for hitting one of the Brewers’ racing sausages with a bat, leading to a three-game suspension.
This game also featured the Cubs debut of Tony Womack. The 2003 Cubs had Mark Grudzielanek get injured and then backup Ramon Martinez got banged up as well. Ramon had been getting regular playing time at third before the Ramirez trade, then at second after the Grudzielanek injury. But after starting regularly for more than a month, he made just one start between July 19 and August 3. Additionally, the Cubs traded Jose Hernandez, Bobby Hill, and released Lenny Harris.
So, the Cubs traded for Womack. Tony had a 13 year big league career. In that time, he played in 1,303 games and had 5,389 plate appearances. He had a career line of .273/.317/.356. He stole 363 bases and scored 739 runs. He reached the major leagues in 1993 at the age of 23 for the Pirates. He played parts of five seasons with them before going to the Diamondbacks for parts of five more. In 2003, he was traded to the Rockies in July and then just over a month later to the Cubs. This was the first of two later career stints with the Cubs. Between the two seasons, he played in just 40 games, had 109 plate appearances and a line of .257/.292/.337.
Three Heroes/Three Goats:
Superhero: Mark Prior (.321). Mark was nothing short of a Superhero in August and September of 2003. He allowed only four hits and one walk in this one. He struck out nine.
Hero: Aramis Ramirez (.207). The home run in this one made four in four games for Ramirez. Finally, one of them helped lead the Cubs to victory. He also drew a walk and scored twice. He drove in two with his fourth inning homer.
Sidekick: Randall Simon (.070). Randall started at first and had two hits, including a three-run homer in the sixth, in four at bats.
Billy Goat: Kenny Lofton (-.128). The other former Pirate was quiet with no hits in four at bats.
Goat: Alex Gonzalez (-.035). Four strikeouts in four at bats. Oof.
Kid: Moises Alou (-.029). Alou had one walk in three plate appearances. He scored a run. He also struck out once.
Game 126, August 21: Cubs 3 at Astros 9 (65-61)
The Cubs lost for the fourth time in five games after winning four straight. This series pushed them back into third place, 1½ games out of first. It was Kerry Wood’s turn to get knocked around in this one. He allowed five runs in just four innings of work and saw his season record fall to just 11-10. The Cubs managed just seven hits and three walks in this one.
Three Heroes/Three Goats:
Superhero: Eric Karros (.090). Eric had a hit and a walk in four plate appearances. He scored once.
Hero: Aramis Ramirez (.039). He drew one walk in four plate appearances. That walk was a second inning walk and it put Cubs at first and second with no outs. They didn’t end up scoring.
Sidekick: Moises Alou (.039). He had two hits in four at bats. Included was a two-run double in the ninth inning that cut the deficit to 9-3.
Billy Goat: Kerry Wood (-.229). Wood allowed six hits, two walks, a homer and five runs. He struck out five in four innings of work.
Goat: Doug Glanville (-.100). He was hitless in three at bats. He did get an RBI on an unusual play. He had a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth. The Astros turned a double play on the play, but the run scored first.
Kid: Damian Miller (-.096). He had one walk in three plate appearances. He grounded into a bases loaded double play in that second inning.
Game 127, August 22: Cubs 4 at Diamondbacks 1 (66-61)
The Cubs traveled to Arizona and got a bounce back result in a place where they’ve struggled historically. Not surprisingly, a strong pitching performance was behind the result. Carlos Zambrano went the distance for the second time in 11 days. Indeed, August of 2003 was one of the best months of Carlos’ career. He made five starts and logged a 3-1 record for 38 innings of work. He allowed only 28 hits, 13 walks and six runs (five earned). He struck out 33 while walking 13. He posted a 1.18 ERA (2.74 FIP).
Three Heroes/Three Goats:
Superhero: Carlos Zambrano (.444). Carlos allowed three hits, two walks and one run. He struck out four.
Hero: Sammy Sosa (.223). The Cubs scored all three of their runs on three homers in this game. Two of them were by Sammy who had an all or nothing game off of DBacks starter Curt Schilling. He had two homers and two strikeouts in four at bats.
Sidekick: Aramis Ramirez (.022). Ramirez stayed hot with another homer. He also struck out twice.
Billy Goat: Tony Womack (-.064). Tony was hitless in four at bats. He had two strikeouts.
Goat: Randall Simon (-.040). Simon was also hitless in four at bats. He struck out once.
Kid: Ramon Martinez (-.030). Martinez was the third Cub who was hitless in three at bats. He struck out once.
Game 128, August 23: Cubs 2 at Diamondbacks 13 (66-62)
Shawn Estes allowed seven runs (six earned) in 4⅓ innings of work. Antonio Alfonseca followed and allowed six runs in just 1⅔ innings of work. The Cubs offense put up very little fight against former Cub Miguel Batista. The Diamondbacks lead this one 10-0 before the Cubs scored their two runs.
Three Heroes/Three Goats:
Superhero: Tony Womack (.007). He lands the top spot after the hitting of starter Estes was dropped. Estes walked and sacrificed in his two plate appearances. Tony had one hit in three at bats to “lead” the Cubs offense.
Hero: Tom Goodwin (.004). Tom had one hit in two at bats.
Sidekick: Paul Bako (.003). Bako lands here for one walk in three plate appearances.
Billy Goat: Shawn Estes (-.193). Nine hits, two walks, seven runs, six earned. He did strikeout three.
Goat: Kenny Lofton (-.082). This one seems wrong for the second spot. He was hitless in three at bats.
Kid: Randall Simon (-.063). Randall actually had a hit and drew a walk in four plate appearances. He scored one of the Cubs two runs. Things got so lopsided in this one that Alfonseca avoids the podiums despite allowing more runs (six) than outs recorded (five).
Game 129, August 24: Cubs 5 at Diamondbacks 3 (67-62)
Matt Clement gave the Cubs a strong outing and opposing starter Brandon Webb lasted only three innings as the Cubs took two out of three. The offense was lead by Randall Simon. Randall came to the Cubs in a trade for a minor leaguer on August 17.
Randall made his major league debut for the Braves in 1997 and then played two seasons with the Tigers. He signed with the Pirates before the 2003 deal and then in yet another cost-cutting maneuver, they traded him to the Cubs. As a Cub, Randall got 110 plate appearances and had a line of .282/.318/.485 (wRC+ 104). For his career, he played in 537 games, had 1,717 plate appearances and a line of .283/.320/.422 (wRC+ 91). The power spike for the Cubs was never really duplicated in his career. Simon last played in the major leagues in 2006, but played in indy ball as late as 2010.
Three Heroes/Three Goats:
Superhero: Randall Simon (.339). Randall had three hits in five at bats. He drove in two and scored one.
Hero: Matt Clement (.290). Matt threw seven innings and allowed five hits, three walks and two runs. He had nine strikeouts.
Sidekick: Aramis Ramirez (.078). Ramirez had three hits and a walk in five plate appearances.
Billy Goat: Sammy Sosa (-.123). Sammy was hitless in five at bats with one strikeout.
Goat: Damian Miller (-.070). Damian had one hit in five at bats. He drove in a run and scored another. He had two strikeouts.
Kid: Ramon Martinez (-.067). Martinez was hitless in four at bats and struck out twice.
Game 130, August 26: Cubs 7 at Cardinals 4 (68-62)
Following an off day, the road trip continued in St. Louis. The Cubs rode a six run third inning rally and seven strong innings from Mark Prior to a second straight win. The win improved Mark’s record to 13-5 on the year. This made three superhero and one hero appearances for Prior in four starts after coming off of the disabled list. As was slowly become a regular thing, the Cubs offense was lead by ex-Pirates. Randall Simon and Aramis Ramirez each homered and Kenny Lofton had two hits, a run and an RBI on the day.
Three Heroes/Three Goats:
Superhero: Kenny Lofton (.174). Kenny had a one-out RBI double in the third and the flood gated opened afterwards.
Hero/Sidekick: Mark Prior/Randall Simon (.161). Mark threw eight innings and allowed just one run, that coming on a solo homer (by Albert Pujols) after it was already 7-0 Cubs. He allowed only three hits, one walk and struck out six. Simon had a two-out three-run homer in the third. That blast was followed by a back-to-back jack from Aramis Ramirez.
Billy Goat: Moises Alou (-.064). One of the Cubs who didn’t get in on the act, Alou was hitless in four at bats.
Goat: Kyle Farnsworth (-.017). Kyle faced four batters. He struck out the first, walked Pujols and then Jim Edmonds followed with a homer. Scott Rolen then reached on an error and that was it for Kyle. He was charged with three runs, two earned.
Kid: Alex Gonzalez (-.013). Alex had a hit and a strike out in four at bats.
Game 131, August 27: Cubs 2 at Cardinals 4 (68-63)
Kerry Wood was dominant in this one, throwing seven shutout innings. Unfortunately, three different Cubs relievers combined to allow four runs as the victory slipped away. The Cardinals scored all four of their runs in the eighth inning. An inning in which the Cubs used five different relievers.
Three Heroes/Three Goats:
Superhero: Kerry Wood (.473). This one slips in as the 10th biggest WPA game of the year for the Cubs. Kerry threw seven innings and allowed four hits, four walks and struck out 11.
Hero: Sammy Sosa (.175). Sammy had two hits and drove in both Cubs runs, one wiht a single in the sixth and one with a double in the eighth. Both came with one out.
Sidekick: Kenny Lofton (.115). Kenny had two hits, including a double, as well and scored once.
Billy Goat: Kyle Farnsworth (-.511). A day after being on the hill while three runs scored, Kyle was used again. He came in with runners on first and third and no outs with the Cubs still leading 2-0. He walked Rolen. Allowed a single that plated two and then threw a wild pitch. He then issued a walk before Mike Matheny sacrificed the runners to second and third. That was it for Farnsworth.
Goat: Mark Guthrie (-.171). Mark faced one batter (Edmonds) and allowed a single.
Kid: Aramis Ramirez (-.131). Ramirez was hitless in four at bats and struck out twice.
Game 132, August 28: Cubs 2 at Cardinals 3 (68-64)
The Cubs scored single runs in the first and third innings. Unfortunately, they never scored again. They allowed single runs in the sixth and seventh innings and then the Cardinals walked it off in the ninth. This wasted another strong start from Carlos Zambrano and a solo homer by Sammy Sosa.
Three Heroes/Three Goats:
Superhero: Carlos Zambrano (.094). Carlos allowed eight hits, three walks and two runs (one earned). He allowed a homer and struck out six. He also had a single in two at bats that contributed to the second run.
Hero: Kenny Lofton (.080). Lofton had a double in four at bats.
Sidekick: Doug Glanville (.049). Doug reached on an error in the eighth in a tie game.
Billy Goat: Ramon Martinez (-.294). Ramon has an odd looking line in the box score. He was hitless in three at bats and drove in a run. He lands here because he flew into a double play with runners on second and third and one out in the eighth. He had a sac fly in the third.
Goat: Mike Remlinger (-.258). Mike allowed a walk off homer to the first batter he faced in the ninth inning. His WPA wasn’t worse because he pitched a perfect eighth.
Kid: Alex Gonzalez (-.120). He was hitless in three at bats.
The Cubs drop the final two games of the road trip, the last one in heart-breaking fashion. The fly ball double play in the eighth inning would have been the go ahead run. Kenny Lofton had doubled one batter earlier with a still fast Doug Glanville on first. Unfortunately, the double was a ground rule double and so Doug wasn’t able to score. Remlinger allowed this homer to Kerry Robinson. This was the only homer Robinson hit that season. In fact, it was one of only three he hit in 795 major league plate appearances. And of course, he hit left handed. So this was quite an odd blast allowed by Remlinger.
That made two straight games where the Cubs allowed leads to get away late in the game. The Cubs were locked in a tight race for the National League Central crown. The two blown games were two of the three games in which the bullpen was handed late, close games. The wins on the trip saw the Cubs win 7-4 after taking a 7-1 lead into the ninth, two complete games and a 5-3 win that they successfully closed out.
So the Cubs took four of nine overall. What I would have dubbed the minimum tolerable record if the team was going to have any chance of winning. Sometimes slowing the bleeding is the best the doctor can do. Here, the Cubs started the trip in second place half a game out. They returned home in third place one and a half behind. Five times on the trip they were half a game out and they kept yo-yo-ing between second and third in the division.
Now, they’d come home for an eight-game homestand. But it was a very odd homestand. They would have three games with the Brewers, a team that was well off of the pace in the NL Central. That would be followed by five games in four days with the Cardinals. The September 2 doubleheader was a make up game from the Mother’s Day washout against the Cardinals.
The target? The Cubs would surely need to win at least five games and push for six if they were going to stay in the hunt. There were only 30 games left in the season and time was starting to get short. The advantage for those 30 games was 17 games at home. But this homestand would represent eight of them. So this is the time. Three games against an also ran and five games against one of the two teams they were chasing.
Next time, we’ll see if they can take care of business. On one of these groups of games, they were going to need to exceed the minimum. Would this one be the one? Five games against the Cardinals was a tall order. Tune in next time to find out how they did.
Until then, thanks for reading, thanks for commenting.

Click here for a full box score.

Sports: The 20 most popular rich-list football teams on social media
As the wallets of the continent's biggest teams continue to grow, so too do their online presences. Social media is also increasingly driving revenue for clubs as brands target players with large followings for sponsorships.
Earlier this year, financial services firm Deloitte released its annual Football Money League, charting the massive revenues of Europe's biggest football clubs.
As the wallets of the continent's biggest teams continue to grow, so too do their online presences.
Social media has become a crucial part of the way the largest clubs connect with their fans around the world, with some even hosting foreign language Twitter accounts.
Social media is also increasingly driving revenue for clubs as brands target players with large followings for sponsorships.
There is still some disparity, though, between the clubs with the most money and the clubs with the most fans (on social media, anyway).
Scroll down to see who are the most popular teams from Deloitte's rich list, ranked in ascending order of combined followers on Facebook, Instagram and their biggest Twitter page — rounded to the nearest hundred thousand.
20. Schalke 04 — 4.1 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 2.9
Instagram: 0.5
Twitter: 0.7
The "04" stands for when the Club was founded… in 1904. With that much history, you can bet the team has built up a huge fanbase, and much of that has migrated online.
Though the club is one of Germany's wealthiest and most stable, its place in the Money League is under threat because of its absence from UEFA competitions this season.
19. West Ham United — 4.3 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 2.3
Instagram: 0.6
Twitter: 1.4
A surprisingly low Facebook following puts East London's West Ham near the bottom of the list.
Their most-followed player is the Mexican forward Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, who has 5.2 million followers on Instagram.
18. Southampton FC — 4.5 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 3.1
Instagram: 0.3
Twitter: 1
This is Southampton's first ever appearance in the Money League and it is largely because of broadcasting revenue, which accounts for £143 million of the club's total revenue.
The club signed Danny Ings during the transfer window who has almost 700,000 followers on Instagram.
17. Everton FC — 5.4 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 3.1.
Instagram: 0.7
Twitter: 1.6
The Toffees' social accounts will have benefited from a season with Wayne Rooney, who has 12.5 million followers on Instagram alone.
Although Rooney has now jetted off to the MLS to play for DC United, Everton made three major signings in a remarkable end to the transfer window, including the former FC Barcelona midfielder André Gomes, who has over 2 million Instagram followers.
16. Napoli — 6.5 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 4.1
Instagram: 1
Twitter: 1.4
Napoli lost the Serie A title to Juventus by just four points last year — a performance that saw revenues increase to earn the southern Italian side a place in the Money League.
Belgian forward Dries Mertens has 1.2 million followers on Instagram.
15. Leicester City — 9.7 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 6.5
Instagram: 2
Twitter: 1.2
Leicester City gatecrashed the Money League last season when it ranked 20th. The club has since climbed to 14th in the financial table thanks to its participation in the Champions League and gained one place in the social media ranking.
Deloitte says the key to further inclusion on its lists will be regular top 10 finishes in the Premier League.
14. Inter Milan — 13.8 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 10.2
Instagram: 2
Twitter: 1.6
Inter Milan has gained over 5 million followers since February last year — an increase that exceeds 60%.
This aligns with the club's profits, which are up 137% on the year before.
13. Tottenham Hostpur — 15.5 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 10.1
Instagram: 2.4
Twitter: 3
Spurs are up one place since February last year. They placed second in the Premier League last season and its run in the Champions League this season has caused a financial windfall and a boost to their online presence.
Mercurial midfielder Dele Alli has done social media campaigns with the likes of BooHoo Man.
12. Atlético Madrid — 22.7 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 13. 8
Instagram: 4.9
Twitter: 4
Despite toppling their Madrid rivals in the UEFA Super Cup recently, Atletico is way behind Real both in terms of cash flow and social following.
Their striker Antoine Griezmann has almost 21 million Instagram followers.
11. Borussia Dortmund — 23.9 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 15.2
Instagram: 5.5
Twitter: 3.2
Dortmund had the highest average match attendance of any Bundesliga club last season, according to worldfootball.net. Unsurprisingly, that resulted in a lot of social media traffic.
The club's biggest star Marco Reus has 6.9 million followers on Instagram.
10. Manchester City — 49.3 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 35.2
Instagram: 7.8
Twitter: 6.3
Manchester City lands a total five places below their place on the Deloitte Money League as its budget outweighs its fan base.
However, City is still a developing club and its position as an economic powerhouse should see it grow comfortably on social media as manager Pep Guardiola continues to make high-profile signings.
9. Liverpool FC — 51 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 31.9
Instagram: 8.6
Twitter: 10.5
Mohamed Salah the "Egyptian King" of Liverpool has 19.3 million followers on Instagram.
"Salah is now considered the most famous person in Egypt," Egyptian doctor and Salah mega fan Michael Wagdy told The Sun.
"He has now become an idol for the people… we now wait for any match for Liverpool and you can't imagine the happiness that occurs when he scored."
8. Juventus — 55.1 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 34.6
Instagram: 14.3
Twitter: 6.2
Cristiano Ronaldo's €100 million transfer to Juventus had an unsurprisingly monumental effect on Juventus' social channels.
Ronaldo, who is the second most-followed person on the whole of Instagram (just one million behind Selena Gomez at the time of writing), added more than 400,000 followers onto Juventus' main and English Twitter pages, as well as in excess of 1.4 million on Instagram and 400,000 on Facebook, according to Football Benchmark.
Ronaldo's post confirming his move to Juventus quickly became the 4th most-liked Instagram of all time.
7. Paris Saint-Germain — 55.8 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 35.2
Instagram: 14.2
Twitter: 6.4
The French team won a domestic quadruple last season, just nine months after flexing its financial muscle as it signed Neymar for a world record transfer fee of £200 million.
The Brazilian striker will have represented a boon to the team's social media standings as well as their goal-scoring prowess, as he boasts over 100 million followers on Instagram alone.
6. Arsenal FC — 63.3 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 37.8
Instagram: 11.8
Twitter: 13.7
Arsenal dropped out of the top five most popular clubs on social media this year after failing to qualify for this season's Champions League tournament.
The club does benefit from French wing-back Hector Bellerin, though, who is basically a part-time model and posts pictures of himself at events like the GQ Awards and London Fashion Week on Instagram.
5. Bayern Munich — 65.7 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 47.6
Instagram: 13.6
Twitter: 4.5
Bayern Munich is up one place since February last year, topping London side Arsenal.
The German side will have received a boost from signing Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez, who boasts almost 40 million followers on Instagram.
Unlike its top rivals in Spain, Bayern Munich runs its Twitter page in its native language — even though its Facebook page posts in English — which may account for its low following on the micro-blogging site.
Their English Twitter account has over 900,000 followers.
4. Chelsea FC — 72.2 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 47.7
Instagram: 12.4
Twitter: 12.1
Stamford Bridge continues to attract the biggest celebrity spectators (Will Ferrel popped in to congratulate Eden Hazard last year) and where celebrities go, social media follows.
It may also surprise you to learn that Brazilian centre-back David Luiz has over 18 million followers on Instagram.
3. Manchester United — 114.8 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 73.5
Instagram: 23
Twitter: 18.3
Manchester United may have topped the Money League for two years running, but it's still a long way off breaking into the top two in terms of social media following.
Last season saw United lose one of its biggest stars, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has almost 35 million followers on Instagram as he migrated over to the US to join LA Galaxy.
Their biggest star in terms of social following, Paul Pogba, now has a World Cup winners' medal to his name.
2. FC Barcelona — 190.4 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 102.7
Instagram: 58.8
Twitter: 28.9
Barcelona has a further 5.6 million followers on its Catalan account and a further 13.6 million on its Spanish one.
Lionel Messi is the third most-followed football player on Instagram after Neymar and Ronaldo, boasting 97.5 million followers on the platform.
1. Real Madrid C.F. — 201.9 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 109.2
Instagram: 62
Twitter: 30.7
Despite losing Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, Real Madrid is the biggest football club on social media right now and the only club in the list to top 200 million followers across all platforms.
"Los Blancos" have gained over 40 million followers since February last year, toppling their El Clasico rivals Barcelona for the top spot.
