Taking Stock of the Stockwells
Actor Dean Stockwell (1936-2021) passed away about a year and a half ago, and I contemplated a post on him at that time, as I considered doing a piece on him long before that, but my good friend Sheila O’Malley, who actually met him, wrote a pretty definitive and effusive obit for RogerEbert.com, so I figured the job was effectively done. I’d certainly have nothing to add. But learning this…

2023: Nadja Tiller, all’anagrafe Nadja Maria Tiller, talvolta indicata come Nadia Tiller, attrice austriaca.

Questions I wish I could ask Dean Stockwell, but now will never get the answer to:
• What was with your eyebrows in She Came to the Valley? They just vanished!
• How’d they get you to stay in Jordan for the filming of Sinbad? Story goes you were plenty mad after they didn't have the cigars you were promised.
• When did Nina Olivette and your father get married? How many times has your father been married (or fake married)? (Then again, doubtful you know the answer to this one anyway)
• How involved are you with the occult? Tosh said Cameron hardly spoke to his father about it but clearly you and she talked a lot more at one point, and you said magic and alchemy were in your life.

Nina Olivette (AKA Betty Veronica)
I found out that she passed away the day I was born.  Sadly, this is the only picture you can find of her.

Guy: *identifies Nina Olivette as Harry’s second wife since the mid-1950s*
Obituary, five years later: *confirms this*
1952-1955 articles: *says some other woman, Dorothy Tucker, is married to Harry*
Dorthy says she was married to a former professional singer in 1956, and a 1960 article says Harry is married to her, but the wording there is a bit ambiguous. I guess Nina Olivette was wife #3, not #2?

So there’s a lot of misinformation out there about Nina Olivette. The Wikipedia page is cleaned up now, but it’s still a mess in other places, going as far as using Nina’s picture for Betty! Apparently, Nina Olivette used to be listed as Dean’s mother’s stage name, but that must’ve come from someone seeing the name plus the fact she was married to Harry and made assumptions. No, she’s Dean’s stepmother.
Harry and Nina met through the theater- I see newspaper articles of them being in the same shows as far back as 1947. He was in a bigger role and she had a small role in the 1940s shows, so I don’t think they properly met for a while? They didn’t get married until the mid-1950s, and she passed away in 1971.
And more on Dean’s family: I found a 1966 newspaper article where this columnist interviews Guy about his mom. By this point, Guy says, Harry is out of theater and now working as a sales executive in New York. Betty was beloved in vaudeville in her early 20s (but quit when she got married/was expecting Guy), in Pittsburgh where the columnist was from. The columnist described her as a “four foot eleven inch bundle of blonde dynamite” (squints at pictures of Betty with her kids I have. Blonde? You sure?). He goes on to say, “In East Liberty, they loved wee Betty Veronica; in fact, in the late 20s, she practically owned Penn Avenue between Shady and Negley and probably could have been elected mayor of that community if it hadn’t been part of Pittsburgh proper.” As of 1966, Betty was sharing a house with her sister (who she also ran the restaurant with) in Hollywood.
Guy’s breakthrough was as first mate to Gardner McKay on the show “Adventures in Paradise,” and his real break was with the Richard Boone show. He got signed on to movies after that and was in town at the time to promote his movie Beau Geste. Guy also tells some anecdote about his son and skiing but it’s interesting he uses the wrong name for his son. I think it was on purpose since the name is said a few times.
