Rem Koolhaas: National Identity In Architecture
As said on ‘Psychology today’, a person’s “identity encompasses the memories, experiences, relationships and values that create one’s sense of self”. As much as this quote is in reference to a person’s identity it can also be related to architecture. For example, the style of buildings and placement in certain countries and cities can be seen as part of that locations identity as sometimes architects use a places’ history as inspiration for new buildings. Identity plays a large role in everyday life, from personal identity to a companies identity to a nations.
Utilities One explains the link between architecture and personal identity: “Physical spaces and places play a significant role in shaping our well-being and personal identity.” This quote really shows the importance of our surroundings and how it affects our identities. A colourful surrounding could make some very colourful and happy but it could also make others almost ‘rebel’ and dislike colour.
Even though identity is usually recognised within people it is also applicable to buildings, objects and places. Everything has different memories and characteristics which identify them.
Quotes:
“Identity encompasses the memories, experiences, relationships and values that create one’s sense of self” – Psychology Today “Physical spaces and places play a significant role in shaping our well-being and personal identity” – Psychology Today “It should be people-specific and should also represent the way of life of such people” – Chukwuali “Architecture As Identity” – Abel

During my research on identity I came to the realisation that even structures have their own identity and that they also help to create the identity of a place. For example, New York wouldn’t be the same without all its skylines which use their height to show off the powerful and wealthy identity of New York.
Chris Abel is a writer and educator who focuses on architectural practices, based in Malta. He has visited and taught in many big universities across the world. He is the author of a book called ‘Architecture and Identity’ which consists of a variety of his key essays that look into cultural and technological changes that are reshaping modern architecture. ‘Architecture and Identity’ is separated into three separate parts: Science and technology, Critical Theory, and Regionalism and Globalization. Within the section on Regionalism and Globalization he has a sub-section called “Architecture as Identity”. Within this chapter Chris looks at how architecture is used to show a places’ identity.
I strongly agree with, “Architecture as Identity” as a quote itself. This is because it shows that our architecture will and has always been used as a way to show a society or communities identity and what they find important and what they believe in, which they have done for centuries through the use of temples, churches and houses, etc.
I believe that as much as our personal identities are important, the identity of our architecture and what it tells others is and has always been equally as important. It shows off power, beliefs, religions and how our society works with each other.
Throughout my research I found that identity is such a broad subject that it is fairly tricky to pin point it to one specific topic. I tried to focus on identity within architecture as best I could to avoid going completely off-topic.

Kenya's Catholic Church has taken a bold stand by rejecting a $40,000 donation from President William Ruto, citing ethical concerns and the need to avoid being used for political gain. President Ruto made the donation during a Sunday Mass at Soweto Catholic Church in Nairobi, offering funds for constructing a priest’s house and a gift for the choir. He pledged a total of 2.6 million Kenyan shillings ($20,000 in cash and another $20,000 to follow) and promised to donate a parish bus. Pay Attention To: Nigerian Civil Defence Exam Questions and Answers ( Over 200 Questions) Ethical Concerns Prompt Rejection Archbishop of Nairobi Philip Anyolo announced that the church would return the funds. He emphasized that the Catholic Church discourages using religious gatherings for political purposes, a stance grounded in both church directives and Kenyan law. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="800"] Archbishop of Nairobi Philip Anyolo said the cash would be returned and declined other pledges from the president[/caption] "The Catholic Church strongly discourages the use of church events, such as fundraisers and gatherings, as platforms for political self-promotion," Archbishop Anyolo stated. Read Also: Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Today, November 20, 2024: Black Market and CBN Rates In addition to rejecting the president's donation, the church also returned 200,000 Kenyan shillings ($1,350) donated by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who attended the service. Rising Tensions Between Churches and Politicians This incident highlights the growing friction between Kenya’s religious institutions and political leaders. With over 80% of Kenyans identifying as Christian, churches have historically maintained close ties with political figures. However, that relationship has come under scrutiny, particularly from young activists who accuse churches of aligning with the government during times of public discontent. Earlier this year, under the #OccupyChurch movement, protesters criticized religious leaders for failing to stand with citizens during demonstrations against new tax measures. The backlash forced the government to withdraw the controversial finance bill. Bishops Criticize Government Policies Last week, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a scathing statement, accusing the government of perpetuating a "culture of lies." They highlighted concerns over over-taxation, corruption, unemployment, and deteriorating healthcare and education systems. "Despite the calmness we are experiencing, there is a lot of anxiety, and most people are losing trust in the government," the bishops stated. President Ruto responded by cautioning the clergy against spreading "misinformation," while a pro-government senator, Aaron Cheruiyot, accused the church of promoting "propaganda and fake news. Support from Other Churches The Anglican Church of Kenya has backed the Catholic Church's position. Anglican Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit defended the Catholic bishops, stating that they reflected the sentiments of many Kenyans. Calling church leaders names or dismissing the bishops' statement as ‘misleading, erroneous, and false’ is itself dishonest," Archbishop Ole Sapit said. "The bishops have faithfully expressed the truth as things are on the ground." A Turning Point in Church-State Relations This development marks a significant shift in the dynamic between Kenya’s churches and its political elite. With increasing calls for transparency and accountability, religious institutions appear to be distancing themselves from political influence, signaling a growing demand for ethical governance in the country.

Nigeria seeks to force digital transformation with new bill - Journal Today Internet https://www.merchant-business.com/nigeria-seeks-to-force-digital-transformation-with-new-bill/?feed_id=149438&_unique_id=66a979d9f0b4e #GLOBAL - BLOGGER BLOGGER If the proposed National Digital Economy and E-Governance bill is passed into law, public institutions across Nigeria will be mandated to adopt electronic communication for official correspondence, contracts, and legal proceedings. The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) will be responsible for implementing the bill when passed.Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, released a draft of the bill two weeks after it passed a first reading at the National Assembly. If the bill is passed, public institutions will conduct activities and functions electronically, including accepting document filings, information processing, document creation and retention, permit or license issuing, and payment processing. “The bill is change-driven. The provisions are very strong, and it’s a culture-shifting bill aimed at driving us towards digitalization,” said Oswald Osaretin Guobadia, Managing partner at DigitA.The Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill mandates electronic records and contracts within government organizations. It also stipulates a fine of not less than ₦1 million per individual and not less than ₦10 million for corporations who fail to comply with the frameworks, guidelines, and regulations under the act.“The bill is a bit overloaded and should have been divided into two separate documents—one for the Digital Economy bill and the other for the E-governance bill,” said one analyst who asked not to be named. The analyst also claimed that some parts of the bill have been covered under different aspects of Nigerian law. The bill also seeks to create a new ICT division that contravenes existing laws established by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA)“The entire bill should have been a directive from the President to different institutions on how they can come together and achieve e-governance,” Guobadia notes. ”Ultimately, the success of this lies in the collaborative nature of the Bill development process.”When enacted, the Digital Economy Bill will bring Nigeria one step closer to e-governance. The country lags behind other African countries—Ghana, Mauritius, South Africa, and Tunisia—that have been identified with high e-government development indexes. The move will also contribute to Nigeria’s goal of increasing digital literacy rates. “The Bill has the potential to significantly improve public administration and service delivery in Nigeria,” notes Davidson Oturu, Managing partner at Nubia Capital. The bill doesn’t state clear rules and procedures for its implementation and may be difficult to implement in areas with limited technological infrastructure. “The implementation may be difficult because the regulating agency (NITDA) already has a lot on its plate and may not be able to deliver on it,” Guobadia said. While the bill will enable e-government and boost digital literacy among government workers, section 62 of the draft seeks to override the provisions of any other law in all matters relating to digital economy and e-government. This can lead to power struggles between existing government agencies who already cater to some part of what the bill covers, the analyst said. Digital Products Get the best African tech newsletters in your inbox“The bill stipulates a fine of not less than ₦1 million per individual and not less than ₦10 million for corporations who fail to comply with the frameworks, guidelines, and…”Source Link: https://techcabal.com/2024/07/30/nigeria-seeks-to-force-digital-transformation-with-new-bill/ http://109.70.148.72/~merchant29/6network/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/g79f17619957abde8cd9557fe5c8e273d23755b7c8034eaa1b718e479d7b972060e88f79fbf4c50bb48fdfce3ece315a524a.jpeg

President Bola Tinubu has sacked Sani Auwalu Balarabe from his position as HoD, Chief of the Intercountry Centre for Oral Health for Africa, ICOH, over an alleged embezzlement of N1.4 billion during his tenure. As far as one could gather from the People's Gazette, the appointment of Balarabe was terminated on the 18th of July, following a spate of petitions that related to financial misconduct and investigations. The president appointed one Taiwo Olaniyi to replace him. Read Also : Airport Filled Up as Governors, Senators, Rep Members, and Ministers Flee Abroad Amidst Protest Fears – Fayose In January, several petitions were sent to the House of Assembly, EFCC, Ministry of Health, and other government agencies to investigate activities of Balarabe at ICOH. The petitions leveled accusations against Balarabe, saying that he had not conducted any research despite the institute receiving huge budgetary allocations, which is its core mandate. One of the petitions dated January 16 had this: "Despite all these budgetary allocations, the centre has not produced a single oral health research project, which is its core mandate and the reason for its establishment.   Read Also : Stop Punishing Your Husband By Denying Him S3x – Nigerian Lawyer Advises Women It further brought to the fore that projects initiated under Balarabe's administration, such as the construction of a remodeled dental clinic and administration block and the procurement of project vehicles, costing over N700 million, were never completed. The petitions also accused him of backdating the appointment letters for new staff and paying them arrears of their salary, with such money to be returned to a particular account. These funds are said to have been applied toward some expenses at ICOH. The sacking of Balarabe clearly typified President Tinubu's commitment to corruption fighting and making those in charge of public institutions accountable.
