23 Envelope Documentary [4AD, 1985]

Documentary from 1985 on 4AD Records in-house design firm, 23 Envelope. Run by designer Vaughn Oliver and photographer Nigel Grierson, they were responsible for the "Look" of classic 4AD bands like Dead Can Dance, the Pixies, This Mortal Coil, etc. This film features Vaughn and Nigel interviewed in the 4ad offices, along with interviews from Ivo Watts-Russel, Robin Guthrie, and more. Along with plenty of video footage from 1980s era 4AD bands.

Back when I lived in San Diego, one of my favorite places to explore was the tide pools below Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach. This dusty Type 55 Polaroid reminds me of those days of peace and solitude, the scent of the ocean air and the mystery of it all. It also reminds me of how I was inspired by photographer Nigel Grierson, who used his vision to create the look and feel of the record label 4AD in the 1980’s. Devastated to learn of the passing of the great designer Vaughan Oliver.  Like so many people I was inspired and influenced immensely by his artwork and Nigel Griersons photography. Together as 23 Envelope they created some of the most iconic record sleeves of the 1980s, and really of all time.
