We return to Edinburgh for tonight's haunted Halloween post and take a look at some of the most haunted locations in the historical Old Town.
I told you last week about the Headless drummer in Edinburgh Castle but there is also a piper said to be eternally playing the bagpipes. Apparently he was sent down to explore the tunnels beneath the castle a few hundred years ago. He played his pipes as he went but halfway down the Royal Mile the music suddenly stopped. The piper was never found, but is said to still be walking the Royal Mile to this day.
Just off Castle Hill you will see the West Bow that leads to Victoria street, I always love telling the story of Major Thomas Weir when taking visitors around these parts.
The Major was a frequent attendee of his local Protestant prayer meetings and a respected pillar of the community. The Major fell sick however, and became compelled, in his feverish state of mind to divulge his secret life to his fellow worshippers.
He admitted crimes against man and God that included depravity, necromancy and other supernatural activities that resulted from his witchcraft. He was taken into custody by the provost Sir Andrew Ramsay, as was his sister Jean, who was his partner in these black arts. Both were tried on April 9, 1670 and sentenced to death.
While Jean was hung in the Grassmarket, not content with just lynching the twisted Major Weir, he was strangled and burned alive somewhere between Edinburgh and Leith.
He was noted for his fervent reluctance to repent his sins and his resolve to accept his hopeless, defiled state. Instead of asking for God’s mercy at the moment before death he exclaimed,
“let me alone - I will not - I have lived as a beast, and I must die as a beast!".
The house where Weir and his sister lived and practiced their debauched devil worship stands was partly knocked down, but it was recently discovered that what is now the Quaker Meeting House on Victoria Terrace part of Weir's house and One of the staff at the Quaker House claims to have seen Mr Weir walk through the wall…
To this day and neighbours have confirmed sightings of his ghost and strange lights from within his former residence; so too sounds of laughter and revelry – a macabre sign that the Major and his cohorts still enjoy their unholy distractions to this day!
Further down the mile, just off the High Street you have The Banshee Labyrinth vying for the title of Scotland’s most haunted pub, like most of the premises on Niddry Street parts of the bar is part of the subterranean South Bridge vaults also mentioned in the last Edinburgh post on this subject. The bars' name stems from the stories of the pub allegedly being occupied by a banshee: a female spirit whose wailing warns of a death in a house. There is a story of a group of workmen who heard a spine-tingling scream followed by a call about the death of one of the workmen’s family member moments later…
Incidents where drinks fly off tables and are thrown against the wall by an invisible force have been reported as well. The bar is also an Edinburgh Festival venue with three performing spaces. Just remember to hold on to your drink if you visit!
I know it's the Major you will want to know more of, so check out the story here https://www.scotsman.com/…/major-thomas-weir-the-edinburgh-…

You may have seen in Cllr Maureen Child’s most recent newsletter that the Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust had completed a feasibility study for a walking and cycling route between the Pentlands and Portobello. The idea would be to start from the Prom and create a safe route along the main road until it reaches the start of the Brunstane Burn Path. From there, it would follow the burn through its various names – Niddrie and Burdiehouse – until it reaches its source up near Swanston. We thought we should find out more.

A smoke alarm is also popularly known as a smoke detector or a fire alarm. It is generally a device that gives off a signal, whether it’s a siren, buzzer or horn, as an alert that tells you fire has started in your home or office. A smoke alarm system is an essential set of safety gadgets for both commercial and private premises. This device complements the fire extinguisher normally used to put out any fires that might break out in buildings.
A smoke alarm system comprises many devices that work hand in hand to detect and also warn people through visual or audio signals in case of an outbreak of fire. Most smoke alarm systems can warn people when carbon monoxide, smoke, or any other dangers are present. Here are some of the benefits of installing smoke alarms in your home or office.
smoke alarm installation melbourne: they are flexible to install
Smoke alarm systems offer you more flexibility, especially when it comes to the places you would like to install them in a building or house than ordinary fire extinguishers, which you cannot just fix in any space. You can install your smoke alarm device in a section or an area of the home that you prefer. Although there are some guidelines for specific areas to avoid, such as areas near the bathroom where the steam from your shower or bath could trigger the smoke alarm, you have a lot of options when it comes to where to fix your fire safety device.
smoke alarm installation melbourne: they provide early warnings of fire outbreaks
Smoke alarms emit audible alerts, and that is an essential feature because you might not always be in the same area or room where a fire starts. These alerts will give you enough time to respond to the alert by addressing the flame using a fire extinguisher or running to a safe area outside the house or office.
Most individuals get burned due to passing out after inhaling carbon monoxide. The smoke alert system can also give you an early warning signal to people who, if not for the fire alarm, would not have the time needed to get away from the building before it’s too late.
smoke alarm installation melbourne: they offer remote monitoring of fire
The other advantage of smoke alarm systems is that they support the monitoring of possible fires without any human intervention. These gadgets offer additional protection regardless of whether there are people inside the premises or not. Once the monitoring facility where the fire system is connected to gets a fire emergency alert, it can dispatch some fire experts to put out the fire even when the premises owner is away or have not received a distress call at all.
smoke alarm installation melbourne: they lower the risks of property damage
One of the best ways to lower the risks of fire damage to any property is to install a smoke alarm system. A smoke alarm system can detect a fire outbreak early enough to enable fire experts to respond and put it out before it becomes unmanageable, saving your property or other people’s properties.
smoke alarm installation melbourne: they are easy to maintain
In spite of the great job they perform, which is to offer 24/7 fire alerting and monitoring to building occupants in case of a fire outbreak, smoke detectors require low maintenance costs. All you need to do is to ensure that your system is inspected by an expert at least once every six months. There are no major costs or obligations that come with having a smoke detector in your property.
smoke alarm installation melbourne: they are cost-effective
Smoke detectors are incredibly cost-effective. Considering the service they offer and the peace of mind you get from having a fire alarm installed in your property, it’s safe to say they provide absolute value for your money. Furthermore, smoke detectors are fairly cheap, as they cost less money than you would imagine. When you purchase smoke alarm systems as standalone components, the cost is pretty low, with the only extra expense is replacing the batteries in the fire alarm units.
The benefits of installing a smoke detector are far-reaching, and you can protect your premises today with an effective system. Fisher Brothers Electrical is committed to offering all our residential and commercial customers the appropriate and effective smoke alarm installations. On 28 June 2017 the Thistle Foundation will be holding Chi in the Park when they hope you will join them. The event is being staged in Princes Street Gardens under the leadership of Margaret Hendry who will lead the mass Tai Chi session.
She is pretty excited about it! She told us : “On 28th June I am doing a massive Chi in the Park.
“That is Tai Chi in Princes Street Gardens between 11am and 1pm. I need thousands of people to come to the West Princes Street Gardens and it will be really good fun!
“The event is for funds for the Thistle Foundation which is a small charity based on Niddrie Mains Road. Anyone can pop out and see us there. Membership is only £25 a year and our gym is just as good as anywhere else! You will be made very welcome.”
The organisers hope for a lovely day on 28 June!
Thistle have a brand new building in Craigmillar and run their award-winning Centre of Wellbeing there, but now they urgently need funds to keep it going and meet the increasing demand for their help.
Actor Tam Dean Burn helped to launch the fundraising drive last month. He explained why he likes Tai Chi. “I do it for a whole load of different reasons every morning on the banks of the River Kelvin. I will be there on 28 June too. It is a fantastic initiative and a wonderful cause. I am totally delighted to be able to help them.”
The charity aims to raise £50,000 to provide the life changing support that they can give to people to help them live with long term conditions.
The sponsored Tai Chi event will run for three hours from 11am to 1pm on 28 June 2017 and will be a challenge for anyone whether they are experienced or just beginners. This is an ancient form of gentle exercise, but which has many mental health benefits.
You can sign up here to get your fundraising started.
Margaret Hendry who will lead the Chi in the Park session on 28 June 2017
Margaret’s own world was changed massively by attending the Thistle Foundation some time ago. She is now a Tai Chi instructor and this has solved her chronic back pain and steered her away from alcohol dependency.
The organisers hope for a lovely day on 28 June!
Actor Tam Dean Burn is lending his support to the fundraising initiative
She was joined in Princes Street Gardens recently by actor Tam Dean Burn and others from the Centre of Wellbeing who already know the benefits of Tai Chi. Now you can too!

On September 5th 1750 the poet Robert Fergusson was born in the Canongate in Edinburgh.
Born to an Aberdeenshire family, his Father, William Ferugsson, was a clerk in trade, marrying Elizabeth Forbes, whom bore him three children prior to Robert’s birth and at least one after.
Due to ill health from young age, Fergusson's education was delayed till he turned six, despite this he progressed through what schooling he had at an admirable pace. It is said that he attended a private school at Niddry’s Wynd, then the high school in Edinburgh prior to obtaining a bursary (allocated to people with the Fergusson name) to Dundee Grammar school and finally at age 14, on to the University of St. Andrews. Where he was denied his degree when he left perhaps due to ill health and/or to support his mother following his fathers death from Asthma.
During his time at St. Andrews, Fergusson was a lively, intelligent young man known for his humour, practical jokes and writing comic verse;
‘My compliments to all the folks With whom I have drunk and cracked my jokes: Tell them, oh tell, too sadly true, That lips in wine I scarce embrue. Nor dare I join the lists with bracchus, Afraid new horrors should attack us, Till health again with winning face My brain shall clear, my nerves shall brace; Then will I with indulgent vein Be blyth and crack my jokes again.
It was here where he wrote his first prominent known poem “Elegy on the Death of Mr David Gregory”, late Professor of Mathematics at the University, in 1762.
On his return home in 1768, Furgusson held the humble position of clerk to the Commissary Office. Writing poetry in his spare time, with his works now being published in ‘The Weekly Magazine” from 1771. His Poem, The Draft Days, published January 1772 with Fergusson now defined as a Scottish poet. He joined the Cape Club, a social group of Edinburgh, which met in various taverns to perform the arts. All this was cut short by the return of his illness in 1773.
Slipping into what seems to be a manic-depressive state he was compelled to give up his employment. Though recovering briefly from the depression, mid 1774. Late July of the same year, he fell down a staircase sustaining a violent head injury and a great deal of blood loss, which appears he suffered a concussion, and disorientation, that continued for sometime. Concerned for his well being his friends committed him to the Edinburgh Bedlam. He spent two months there and despite the deplorable conditions was in good health and spirits just before his sudden death, (a subdural haematoma may have been the cause) on October 17, 1774, aged 24.
Robert Burns inspired by the young poet was to erect a monument to Fergusson in the form of a simple headstone, inscribed with the heartfelt following; No sculptured marble here, nor pompous lay, No storied urn, nor animated bust ; This simple stone directs pale Scotia’s way, To pour her sorrows o’er her poet’s dust. Robert Burns.
Next time you're walking down Canongate on The Royal Mile take a wee look at his statue, the flag won't be there that's mie, and then go see his grave, it's down to the left of the Kirk with the small plaque in front of it, the plaque itself reads... 'This stone, originally erected by Robert Burns, has been repaired at the charges of Robert Louis Stevenson and is by him re-dedicated to the memory of Robert Fergusson as a gift of one Edinburgh lad to another.'
