Fachada principal, de noche (foto 1). Voy a examinar hoy una iglesia poco conocida fuera de Aviñón pero que a mí me gustó bastante, a pesar de que sólo me dio tiempo a verla por la noche. Era enero, así que en el hemisferio norte es invierno y anochece demasiado pronto. Según la tradición, parece que había en origen una iglesia del siglo VII que fue arrasada por los sarracenos. Davout’s first years.

Shortly after the birth of Louis Nicolas, the d’Avout family moved from Annoux to nearby Etivey where they resided some ten years. It was while living at Etivey that Madame d’Avout gave birth to her other three children. On September 16, 1771, a daughter, Julie, was born. Two years later Alexandre was born and in 1776 a fourth child, Charles. Within three years of the birth of their last child, tragedy struck the d’Avout family. On March 3, 1779, Jean François was killed in a hunting accident. Young Louis was not yet nine years of age when his father was struck down in his prime of life. His mother was forced to assume the heavy responsibility of raising and educating the four children. In order to conserve the adequate, but by no means lavish, inheritance left by her husband, Madame d’Avout sold Etivey, which was too costly for her to maintain, and purchased the château and grounds of Ravières. Ravières was less pretentious and more suitable to the means and needs of the widow d’Avout. She was to maintain her residence there throughout the Revolution and Empire, and the estate remained in the family into the twentieth century.

In the years following her husband’s death, Marie Adélaïde d’Avout was greatly aided by her mother, who had also been deprived of her husband early in life. Madame Minard de Velars was an intelligent and well-educated woman. She was high spirited and extremely capable - as evidenced by the fine education of her children and the careful manner in which she managed the rather modest fortune left her upon the death of her husband. She not only aided her daughter in the financial management of her affairs, but also was a major influence in the education of the children. Louis Davout formed an attachment to his maternal grandmother which survived her death in 1784 and became most apparent when upon his suggestion his youngest daughter was given her name.
