424. Black Friday though the years (Hampton/Newport News, VA), part 2, 1990-1999

(previously)

A reminder of the movers and shakers and failures of the retail landscape of Hampton and Newport News back then:

Coliseum Mall

Newmarket North / Newmarket Fair Mall

Patrick Henry Mall

Bart is the star of 1990′s coverage. My mom loved Everything’s a $1.00 back then. It felt like we were at the Newmarket location every weekend when I was in the first grade. I found a copy of the Simpsons Christmas book there. K&K Toys was an unfortunate name for a store.

Oh boy, this is the beginning of the end of Newmarket Fair Mall (formerly known as Newmarket North). They had just finished 10 months of remodeling, just to have several stores leave after their leases expired, and one of the anchor stores, Miller & Rhoads closed the year before. This is the final time in Daily Press history that Newmarket Fair Mall is mentioned in Black Friday coverage.

1991

The Fisher-Price Game table! With the commercial where the boys played games on the table all day and half the night!

This was the first year that Kmart decided to be redic. and stay open on Thanksgiving. My mom and I were there that day! This was the thanksgiving that my dad was out to sea, and mom decided that we would just eat at Piccadilly Cafeteria at Coliseum Mall that day and hit KMart later to pick up Home Alone on VHS.

Note that Newmarket Fair wasn’t mentioned!

President Bush bought some Reeboks and slime for the grandkids.

1992

1992′s coverage was sparse. Rollerblade dolls were hot.

1993

Roses got a shout out. This was right before they turned into a dump. Still a dump in 2020! Newmarket Fair which was one foot in the grave at this point, only receiving a quick Sears mention. Above is a Proffitt’s ad from 1996 that shows what the Cracker Jack sale was all about. Proffitt’s didn’t last long at Coliseum, closed in 1997 and then Dillard’s moved in.

1994

This was the first year my paper went to WalMart, which is strange considering WalMart opened around 1991 in Hampton. Took them three years to get there. Maybe the Newport News location was new in 1994. There was a $139 VCR on sale at WalMart if you got there at six am.

The Cracker Jack promo was back at Proffitt’s. I forgot that they had two separate stores in Coliseum Mall, because they took over the old Children’s Palace and Hess’s store. So if you needed women’s clothes and men’s clothes, you had to go clear across the mall for the men’s clothes.

Our Super KMart got a mention too.

1995

1995 feels like the first year that the discount stores beat the malls in popularity on Black Friday. Hills, which had just opened in Hampton was the the star in 1995. By January of 1997, they were toast. The store stayed vacant from 1997-2017 when an At Home store finally moved in.

My mom and I actually went to Coliseum Mall on Black Friday that year. The first time I had ever been to the stores that day. I don’t remember it being that crazy.

1995 was also the last year someone said they were excited to go to Montgomery Ward.

1996

Aw, weeks before Hills closed, and months after we got our first Target. Brenda forgot her shoes! Jeanie got her Tickle Me Elmo! Internet greetings at Patrick Henry Mall! People fought over a dinky gift bag at Target!:

I had that giant B1 from Bananas in Pajamas! I know I was too old for the Bananas, but I loved.that.show. It was so trippy!

The Talkboy was still around in 1996! I got mine the year before after getting a broken one in 1994 and not being able to find one in 1992,1993.

1997

Daily Press didn’t have the 1997 newspaper. So I cheated and used the Sun-Sentinel from Florida. I wonder how Florencia got all those packages back to Argentina.

1998

I saved this paper when I was 15! I’m surprised Montgomery Ward carried Furby.

1999

Barely any mall coverage in 1999, mostly focusing on stores like Toys R Us and the guy who hoarded all those monitors at CompUSA. Check out Carol and her walkie talkie!

Choosing the Best Moving Company

Moving can be very tedious, especially if you have a lot of things. Packing all your things, renting a truck, loading the truck, driving to the new place and unloading everything ... All of this takes a long time. As a result, many people choose to hire a moving company to take care of all or part of it.

Unfortunately, while hiring a mover can save you a lot of time and stress, hiring the wrong mover can add to it. To protect yourself and your belongings, you will need to know how to choose a moving company.

Here are some things to consider when looking for a good moving company.

1) What part of the move do you want the moving company to handle?

The saying is that you can hire someone to do almost anything for you, for a price. This is certainly true in this case. Many people choose to pack all of their belongings themselves and hire carriers to load / unload the truck and transport everything. Some people, especially if they are moving across the country, can rent a truck and hire movers to pack everything and pack the truck, and then drive themselves. Others hire movers to do absolutely everything, from packing the boxes to unloading everything in the right rooms in the new house.

2) How much are you budgeting for the move?

Of course, anything the moving company does will add to your bill. If you are on a tight budget, you may need to balance quality and convenience with cost. This means that you may have to do some of the work yourself and hire movers who will take care of the more difficult parts, usually loading and driving the truck. Compare prices between moving companies and decide which one best suits your needs.

3) How far is it moving?

Long distance moves affect two things when choosing a moving company: the cost of the move and the moving companies you have to choose from. Some local businesses may not be able to move you to another state. Also, for long distance moves, you will want to hire a moving company well in advance to make sure they have availability.

4) Does the moving company insure your belongings against damage or loss?

You have a lot of capital invested in your belongings. Think about how much money it would take to replace some or all of it if something happened during the move. Could you even do it?

Many moving companies will only refund a fraction of the value of your belongings if something happens to them. Ask a mover how much they pay for lost or damaged property, and make sure you get a copy of this policy in writing. If your mover's policy doesn't offer enough coverage, you may want to look for additional insurance.

5) What kind of reputation does the moving company have?

We have all heard the horror stories of things missing or broken after the carriers unpacked the truck and left. Just as you want your belongings to be protected from damage or loss, you also need to know if a moving company has a reputation for breaking or stealing things.

One way to research the reputation of a moving company is to look up its name online. Look for both complaints and follow-ups, as the way the company handled the complaint is at least as important as the complaint itself. You should also check if the business is a member of the Better Business Bureau. Although BBB will attempt to mediate a dispute even if the mover is not a member, there is less incentive for a non-member to work toward a resolution.

How long the company has been in business is also a good indicator of reputation. Companies with a bad reputation generally don't stay in business for long, so a company that has been around for a long time is probably a better option than one that has been started recently.

6) Can the moving company give you references?

A good moving company should be able to provide you with references upon request. Check these references, but also keep in mind that, like an individual, the moving company is likely to offer references that they know will be positive.

Of course, the best reference you can get is from a friend or acquaintance. You are probably better off using a moving company recommended by someone you know, rather than one you've never heard of before.

Use miscellaneous items (ones belonging to no particular room), for fillers with boxes. Place them into plastic bags marking what is in it.

Set some bed sheets and a few pillows in their own box so they are ready once you move in. Also pack a flashlight, and simple tools in this box. Be sure to label the box with “Open First” in large letters.

After packing each box, label them accordingly. Most common way is by black marker with room names on boxes. Be sure to label “fragile” on each box with breakable contents. Some people find placing the weight (heavy, medium, and light) on each box to be helpful.

Moving Day

If Toronto movers are employed, inform them which boxes you packed, making sure each box is labelled. Request box labelled “Open First” be loaded last, making sure they are available when arriving at your new home.

Confirm all your contact information with the GTA moving guys, while obtaining theirs again as well.

Review all paperwork carefully, asking any questions if anything looks incorrect.

Be sure to maintain a copy for yourself.

Pack suitcase loaded with essentials in your private vehicle.

Interstate Moving Companies

When moving across state lines, this is known as interstate movement. Moving is stressful enough with packing boxes and moving preparation, but interstate moving involves more. One important thing to know is that there are requirements that interstate moving companies must meet. When moving across state lines, each state has its own guidelines. Movers that move homes from one state to another are regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and are legally required to do the following:

• Display your US Department of Transportation (DOT) number in any advertisement. Your DOT number is the identifier of the company the truck belongs to that also collects and monitors the moving company safety information that was acquired during an audit, accident investigations, compliance reviews, and inspections.

• Get licensed by the FMCSA

• Provide arbitration if a client's complaint cannot be resolved amicably. The FMCSA does not have the authority to resolve any claims against interstate moving companies, but if there is a problem, the customer can file a complaint against the company by calling the FMSCA.

• Landlords should receive a brochure titled Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move in so they are informed before the move begins.

• Allow owners to review the list of charges and fees.

• Provide the customer with an accurate summary of how the complaint handling procedures, including a phone number

Interstate moving companies charge their clients a fee that is based on what they will be moving in, so to make it less expensive, try to get rid of things you don't need before contacting a moving company. If this is your first time moving, don't hire the first company you see on the Internet or in the phone book. You must get quotes from at least three different companies. You must check its reputation and its reliability.

When interviewing moving companies in person or over the phone, you should ask the following questions.

• How long have they been in business as a company?

• Make sure they are properly licensed and insured.

• You should check if they have a DOT number affixed correctly.

• Does the company outsource your work to other moving services? If you decide to hire the company you are interviewing, you don't want to know that another moving company you don't know about is moving your household belongings.
