The Pandemic's Impact on Streaming Services

When the pandemic broke in March 2020 people were forced to stay inside their homes and most people were even scared to take a step out their front door. People were told to stay inside at all times and keep themselves pent up at home. Due to this increased amount of time spent inside their homes, people looked to streaming services to pass the time. Almost everyone around the world was out of their minds bored and forced to find their entertainment indoors. These individuals turned to streaming platforms in order to fulfill their entertainment needs. This led to a surge of subscribers to platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, Peacock, Disney+, Hulu, and Paramount+. People had almost every movie option or tv show in the palm of their hands while in the comfort of their own homes. Since there was such an increase of people using those streaming services, it seems as though these companies took advantage of the mass amount of people subscribing to these services as prices started to gradually increase from month to month. However, the pandemic did have a detrimental effect on box office revenues. In 2019 box office revenues broke records bringing in $42.3 billion but that all came crashing to a halt in 2020 when they only brought in around $12 billion since movie theaters were closed as precautionary measures against COVID. 

As you can see, due to the pandemic forcing people to stay indoors and find their own form of entertainment, this led to an increase in demand for streaming services. This increase in demand ultimately led to an increase in the equilibrium prices of such streaming services. As there is more demand, gradually prices will keep increasing. 

At the beginning of the pandemic, the prices of these streaming services were considered a bargain by most when compared to cable television. In 2023, the average monthly cost of a cable tv package is roughly $217.42 while a basic subscription to Netflix is just $9.99 a month and their highest premium subscription only tallies up to $19.99 per month. As well as being significantly cheaper than cable TV, streaming services had the advantage of being binge-able, therefore, users could watch the entirety of a TV show or movie series in quick succession, with no need to wait for a specific airing time on television. 

With time, streaming services became more and more popular as more companies started coming out with new streaming services and others updated and expanded their services. As demand for these services grew, companies needed to start investing more in their services which led to an increase in the price of streaming services. For example, at the beginning of 2019, Netflix’s basic plan was $6.99, its standard plan was $10.99, and its premium plan was $13.99 a month. Since 2019, Netflix has been increasing the prices of their subscription plans as more and more people have started subscribing which is why we are at where we are right now where a basic plan is $9.99, a standard plan is $15.49, and a premium subscription plan is $19.99 a month. However, Netflix isn’t alone, other streaming services such as Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Apple TV+, and many other companies have bumped their prices since the beginning of the pandemic.

Not only have these prices impacted me but thousands of others as well. I have had to cut down on the number of streaming services I subscribe to since they are getting so expensive and the total cost adds up quickly if you take into consideration all of the streaming services you subscribe to. I can only hope that these services stop increasing their prices so regularly or else I'm going to have to stop watching tv altogether!

❣️ Cutie Pie - loving it so far!! The production quality is top-tier, which I did not expect. The filming + editing is really nice too and not the mention the cast is 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻.
