more reflections on new computer (MSI Delta 15)

The speakers are not particularly powerful. My macbook air from 2013 with only one functioning speaker has better sound. I think if this were my only computer, this might be more annoying, but since this is one of 6 functioning computers that I own, I can let that go. Like they're not .... bad. They're just not super great either. Then again, this seems to be a continual theme with every windows PC I've ever owned lol (this is my 7th windows pc since 2005) Somehow all my PCs seem to die after 5-6 years (excepting my last one which made it 9.5 years whooo!) and my macs are still chugging along after 10+ years (oldest mac turned 14 this year and I finally had to replace the battery. Daily driver mac turned 11)

This computer is stupid fast and that's really nice. You know having a really fast computer is something that you give up on when you live in old computer land. So like, y'all my macbook pro 2012 is not much slower than this one (owing to the SSD and the 16GB of ram that I gave it) but it still has a longer boot time than this thing. This is making me wonder if they sell NVMe to SATA adapters so I could install a 1TB NVMe in the macbook (I have a 1tb SATA SSD on board right now). The boot time on this new PC is like 10 whole seconds which slaps.

So much less heat out of this computer compared to my last one. The reviewers of this computer complaining about the heat literally did not have my 9.5 year old PC y'all. They haven't played video games on a 14 year old mac and lived to tell the tale. The heat on the bottom of the 2009 macbook is scorching to the touch after 25 minutes in on civ v, as is the heat out of the charger. The charger on this computer is still room temp 2.5 hours into a video game. That's nice.

Also, holy shit y'all just found out that I can pick WHATEVER color I want for the backlight in the keyboard. This is a pointless but very fun feature that I LOVE.

The colors are decent in the general system and good in game. They're no adobe colorspace in PS -- my mac definitely has brighter coloring in adobe software.

once again so glad that explorer patcher exists because it has made the windows explorer/start menu experience tolerable in windows 11 which the native system does not offer. if you have windows 11 and hate the windows 11 start menu explorer patcher is for you. google it and download it. (note that there is currently a bug in it where if you have it use the windows 10 taskbar that the task viewer/gestures in the system break. Still you are able to use the start menu fix, which in my mind is the best most useful feature of the patch.

Yes, the iPad Pros Needed to Be Thinner

I won’t be buying the new iPads, as I’ll keep rocking my 11-inch 2018 (with Magic Keyboard). But one thing has been bugging me about the early coverage of the new models, that I wanted to address. 1

Because, when I watched the Keynote and saw that the new iPad Pro models were thinner and lighter, I immediately went “Nice!”. But I kept seeing (and hearing) comments like this, here exemplified by David Pierce (whom I really like!) on The Verge: 2

Basically, the point is, “Who asked for this? Why not make it thicker and increase the battery life?” Nilay (Patel) agrees with this — but then, six(!) minutes later, answers the question: 3

So yeah, not a long time between them not understanding why they made it thinner and lighter, and complaining about it being too thick and heavy…

Reason #1: The Magic Keyboard

As you can see, the iPad becomes pretty thick! Furthermore, I personally really like that it’s cantilever instead of using a kickstand (as it uses way less depth) — but then you have to worry about it falling over. This has caused two things in the old Magic Keyboard (MK):

To counterbalance, the keyboard itself has to be heavier.

It still can’t tilt as much, and this contributes to the lack of a function row.

So, as the new iPads are thinner and lighter, they’ve spent some of the gains on making the keyboard lighter as well, and some on adjusting the angle to make room for a function row. Very valuable stuff, in my opinion!

Reason #2: Holding it

A friend and I have exchanged iPads temporarily — so currently he has my iPad Pro 11-inch, and I have his iPad Mini. 4 The latter is obviously way worse as a semi-laptop — but it’s very nice to hold! Either for reading, watching movies or playing games. But the larger and heavier the iPad is, the more clunky this (traditional tablet usage) is. I’m not saying my 11-inch is terrible at this — but I absolutely think improving it at it is worthwhile. And this is even more true on the 13-inch. Previously, I had a 12.9-inch (with a home button), and I rarely used it in my hands, as it was so clunky.

More batteries come at a cost

If Apple instead shoved more battery life into the iPads, we have to remember that we would have to carry that extra weight, and deal with the extra thickness, every time we use (or just transport) the product! And we would only benefit from the extra battery life those times we’re away from power for more than 10 hours. I’m not saying it wouldn’t be nice to not have to plug it in quite that often, or get away with a smaller power bank on a trip. But I am saying the two reasons above far outweigh (pun intended) this benefit.

So I’m pleased Apple chose to make it thinner and lighter — because it was absolutely needed. And I think I’ll love it, when I buy the 2024 11-inch model second hand in three years!

You might recall hearing about this range a decade or more ago, but this giant model is relatively new. This particular iteration was announced in February 2023, and rolled out to markets across the world a little after. As is common with Dell PCs, there are several specs available, but like the MacBook Pro range, none come cheap. The most affordable costs £2299 in the UK at the time of review, $2049 in the US. Our review spec has an official price of $3,549.00/£3699 and sold direct from Dell for $2,999/£3299 at review. DELL XPS 17: DESIGN & USABILITY Front view of the Dell XPS 17 laptop. (Image credit: Andrew Williams) - Aluminum and carbon fiber weave design - A little too heavy for all-day portability - Excellent build quality Dell has started to mess with elements of its classic laptop design recently, with the mildly wild XPS 13 Plus. But the Dell XPS 17? This is the Dell style we know and, mostly, love. Its lid is aluminum, as is the underside. The inside is decked out in a carbon fiber weave, designed to boost rigidity. It's an elegant, serious-looking design. And while it has been around for ages, the Dell XPS 17's super-slim screen borders mean you aren't going to mistake this for something released years ago. But is it actually portable? Not in a traditional sense. The Dell XPS 17 weighs 2.44kg, a full kilo more than what we consider ideal for everyday roving use. However, its small screen borders and sub-2cm thickness mean it will fit into a normal-size rucksack just fine. We spent a week using the Dell XPS 17 out and about with no issue, but do have a think about whether it might be too heavy if that is your plan week-after-week. Think about something like the LG Gram 17 or 16 if you want true low-weight portability. Still, we had no worries about its resilience out on the road. The metal lid is sturdy, the keyboard plate lovely and stiff. It's what we expect from Dell's venerable XPS line. DELL XPS 17: DISPLAY The Dell XPS 17's 4K display looks great 4K touchscreen, though an OLED option would have been nice. (Image credit: Andrew Williams) - Up to 4K resolution - Good maximum brightness - Excellent color saturation One key reason to put up with that weight is the Dell XPS 17's XL-size screen. It comes in two flavors, a Full HD style display and the 4K 3480 x 2400 monster we have here. This is of the increasingly popular 16:10 ratio, which makes busy apps feel more roomy while leaving just small black bars above and below widescreen videos. The Dell XPS 17's color depth is fantastic, covering 99.9% of the Adobe RGB gamut according to our colorimeter tool. It's pro-grade color saturation. Maximum brightness of 544 nits makes light work of writing documents outdoors on a sunny day, and is almost 10% higher than Dell's own claim. Of course, the MacBook Pro 16 can go much brighter still, with 1000-nit standard brightness and 1600-nit HDR. But on the Windows side, this is among the brightest large-screen laptops we've seen. There's just one slight weakness. Contrast is just OK at 1000:1 to 1370:1 depending on the screen brightness. If you use the Dell XPS 17 in a darkened room to watch a movie, you are going to notice that the "blacks" aren't really that black. While this is normal for an LCD, we're now in an age where OLED screens, which have near-perfect black levels, are quite common in laptops. It'd certainly be a capable laptop for photo editing, but if you're serious about it, we'd recommend springing for something with an OLED display like the HP Spectre x360 16. Other parts to note here include that the Dell XPS 17 has a touchscreen, lovely-looking edge-to-edge glass, and uses a standard 60Hz refresh rate. We don't think that's much of an issue for work, but gaming laptops typically have much faster-reacting displays these days. DELL XPS 17: KEYBOARD & TOUCHPAD The XPS 17's keyboard is big, but despite the size it doesn't have a dedicated number pad, which might put some users off. (Image credit: Andrew Williams) - Top-tier glass touchpad - Good, although fairly normal, keyboard design - Powerful speakers The Dell XPS 17 doesn't take the usual approach to keyboard design for a laptop this size. You'd usually see a separate NUM pad off to the side, as was once the convention for anything 15.6-inch or larger. Here, you just get the core array of buttons, in order to keep the keyboard centered with the screen. The keys aren't quite as deep as those of a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, and not quite as snappy as the mechanical designs of some gaming laptops. But they are deeper than those of a MacBook, and feel great for long-form typing. Their feel is slightly mushy rather than clicky, and typing isn't too noisy, until you start hammering the space bar, which can generate a good clack when whacked. The keyboard also has a multi-stage white backlight, as you'd hope. The spare space to the left and right of the keys is given over to the speaker array, a quad-driver setup that sounds good. There's real volume and projection here, plus a good amount of bass for a laptop. It's a little less of a well composed and integrated sound than the MacBook Pro 16, but that laptop set a very high bar. It's a large, ultra-smooth pane of textured glass with a classic mechanical clicker, rather than the haptic kind Apple has used since 2015, and others have experimented with in more recent years. There's nothing wrong with this older style. The Dell XPS 17's pad has a velvety-feeling clicker, similar to those of Microsoft's top Surface laptops before the company started playing around with largely inferior haptic designs. Working on this laptop feels great, with one issue. The Dell XPS 17’s webcam is behind the times in tech terms. It’s a 720p camera, at a time when most premium laptops have started to use at least 1080p cams. There’s more to camera image quality than resolution, but the soft image here doesn’t sit well with the laptop’s price and its otherwise consistent high quality level. DELL XPS 17: PERFORMANCE & FEATURES Our XPS 17 came with a powerful Intel Core i9-13900H CPU. (Image credit: Andrew Williams) - Excellent all-round performance - Not ideal for hardcore gamers thanks to lower-power GPU The Dell XPS 17 is a real performance laptop, particularly in the spec we have. It uses Intel's top-end Core i9-13900H CPU, 32GB RAM, a 1TB SSD and the Nvidia RTX 4070 graphics card. This sounds like a killer line-up, and it is. But you should bear one important thing in mind if you are interested in graphics performance. Dell uses a power-limited version of the Nvidia RTX 4070 that puts a significant limit on performance. For example, in 3DMark's Time Spy test the Dell XPS 17 scores 8799 points. A maxed-out gaming laptop with an RTX 4070 that can draw up to 140W might score as much as 12000 points. And a desktop RTX 4070? You're looking at 16000 points. Dell says it is limited to 60W. Using the MSI Afterburner app we actually saw it regularly reach 70W when there was power to spare i.e when the CPU was using very little. But, sure, 60W is the conservative max. High power and low-power cards all bear the "RTX 4070" name, but the Dell XPS 17 only offers a little over 50% of a home gaming PC with such a card. But does it matter? The Dell XPS 17 is clearly not a laptop made primarily for gaming. And it can still play Cyberpunk 2077 comfortably, not least because this generation of cards has a feature called frame generation. This is similar to the frame interpolation used in TVs, but much smarter, and can well over double frame rates in supported games. Of course, if you’re the XPS 17 owner Dell actually has in mind, you are more likely to use the GPU power for video editing or 3D modeling more often than gaming. The Dell XPS 17 can play games, but isn’t specifically made for the job. You can hear this in its fan behavior too. The most sensible workstations and gaming laptops sacrifice slimness in order to house a cooling system that is subtle, and avoids the high-pitch whine common in slim PCs. Dell’s XPS 17 does not whine, but it does have a treble component that is harder to ignore as the fans start to pick up the pace. Add just 10% more and you wouldn’t legally be able to take this laptop on a plane. We have seen reports that this laptop only lasts 3.5 hours between charges, but that has not been our experience at all. In PC Mark's Modern Office it lasted 10.5 hours exactly. This test is designed to emulate normal office job workloads, if admittedly including periods of sitting around doing nothing. After using it outside at maximum brightness, working without breaks, our testing says you can expect the Dell XPS 17 to last just under six hours of light work. This is all good news considering this laptop has a fairly bright screen of 4K resolution. These high-res displays can at times be serious power hogs. Like all laptops this powerful, the Dell XPS 17 needs a larger, heavier power supply than, say, a MacBook Air. It’s a 130W supply, but is still much trimmer than the average gaming laptop PSU. You might expect classic USB-A ports in a laptop of this style, but there are none. There’s plenty of potential to extend this with a dock, though, because the Dell XPS 17 has four ultra-fast Thunderbolt 4 connectors. Dell throws in a basic dongle to turn one of these into a USB-A and HDMI 2.0 port. Other connectors on the Dell XPS 17 include a combi headphone/mic jack and a full-size SD card slot. SHOULD YOU BUY THE DELL XPS 17? The Dell XPS 17 is a powerful, stylish laptop that impresses on multiple fronts, and faces two main roadblocks. This is an expensive laptop, just like the Apple MacBook Pro 16, and more workstation-style power is available for less from some enthusiast gaming laptops. The Dell XPS 17 is also not that portable-friendly, unlike the smaller models in this family. However, laptops like this show that the outer elements of design and build are more than just superficial. As well as feeling solid, the Dell XPS 17 has a quality keyboard and an excellent touchpad, which levels-up the everyday feel of using the PC. If you want a powerful, well-built laptop with a large screen and you can stomach the price, then the Dell XPS 17 is a fantastic choice. Apple launched a new MacBook during its special event, "One More Thing." For a long time, the company launched its computers with Intel processors, but for the first time, Apple introduced in-house processors.

Apple's new in-house processor will be called the Apple M1, which is ARM-based. Along with the Apple M1, the company has launched MacBook Pro 13 inch, MacBook Air, and Mac mini.

Let us tell you that during WWDC, the company made it clear that MacBook with Intel processor will not be discontinued yet.

Talking about Apple's first Apple M1 chipset has 8 cores, of which four high-power and four power-efficient cores have been given. It also has an image signal processor and a custom GPU.

According to the company, it also has a neural engine and an enclave. This company has prepared a 5-nanometer process.

The price

MacBook Air

The MacBook Air 256GB variant with Apple M1 chipset in India will be priced at Rs 92,900, while the 512GB variant will be available for Rs 1,17,900.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro 256GB will cost Rs 1,22,900. The 512GB variant will be priced at Rs 1,42,900. Intel-based MacBooks will also be available.

Talking about the price of the Mac mini, its 256GB variant will be available for Rs 64,900. While the 512GB model can be purchased for Rs 84,900. Sales of Intel variants of the Mac mini will also continue.

What is special about the Apple M1 chipset

Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke extensively about the new chipset during the launch event. For decades, the company has been selling iPhone with its chipset and it has taken many years to make Apple M1.

Apple has claimed that the Apple M1-based MacBook will be faster than 98% of PCs and laptops sold last year. According to the MacBook Air launched last year, it will be 3.5 times faster, and it will get 5 times better graphics performance.

The Apple M1 has 8 courses. It has been claimed that this is the world's fastest VARWAT CPU. Its specialty will be that the laptop's wake speed will increase, and it will start as soon as you open it. Battery life has also been claimed to be longer.

Apple has said that MacBooks with the M1 chipset will get more battery backup than any other MacBook. Wireless web browsing will get 15 hours of backup and 18 hours of video playback. There will be no noise because the MacBook does not have a fan.

Some special changes have not been made in terms of design. MacBook Air has a 13.3-inch 2560X1600 Retina display. There is a backlit magic keyboard and up to 16GB of RAM and 2TB of storage support are provided.

For connectivity, a headphone jack, WiFi 6, Thunderbolt 3, and USB 3.1 have been provided. It comes with a 720p camera. The company has said that these M1-based Macs will work better with MacOS Big Sur.

It’s the perfect name because it’s magic all you get from this beautiful, well-designed, functional keyboard for my new iPad Air.

Let me tell you WHY...

I’ve had various styles and sizes when it comes to keyboards, (See bio link) but this unique keyboard made my iPad so much more functional. It’s not sure a keyboard: it’s a Case/trackpad/Pass-through charging unit, and a keyboard.

Having all those functional add-ons to my new iPad has managed to replace my 6year old MacBook Pro. I managed to get all my personal, and work-related work on the iPad without the need for having to carry my Laptop with me. That brings me to my last remark, I waited six months to post this review, to just make sure can I really managed to not reach over my laptop, or can the iPad get all my things done. In this case, the answer is Yes and a big YES.

I know the price tag is $299 but honestly, you can’t think of only a “keyboard” as it offers so much more than a typing tool.

Apple year in review 2022. Apple had only 3 events plus a press release in 2022. We did a recap of the announcements (reviewed below) and what did stand out to us this year.

The March 6th event was entitled Peek Performance. They announced the iPhone SE (3rd generation) with the Apple A15 Bionic chip and Ceramic Shield with a base price of $429. The iPad Air (5th generation) was announced with the Apple M1 chip, Center Stage.Studio Display and Mac Studio.

WWDC 2022 was June 8-10 and as always new OS are announced. iOS16, iPadOS16, also announced watchOS 9 as well as updates to CarPlay, HomeKit, Parental Controls. MacBook announcements. 

The third event on September 7th was entitled Far Out. What was introduced was the Apple Watch Series 8, 2nd-generation Apple Watch SE, and Apple Watch Ultra. Other announcements included the 2nd-generation AirPods Pro, iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max. New Apple processors included the Apple H2 and A16

A press release on October18 announced The 6th-generation iPad Pro with the Apple M2 chip, 10th-generation iPad with the Apple A14 Bionic chip, Magic Keyboard Folio for iPad‎, and 3rd-generation Apple TV 4K console with the Apple A15 Bionic chip iPadOS 16 is scheduled to be released on October 24 with the new iPad models appearing in stores on the October 26. The new Apple TV 4K console arrived on November 4.
