A world tour of innovations for urban bicycle riding

This article travels the world to see how cities, companies, and start-ups are fostering the use of bicycles for personal transportation and delivery of goods.

We are gradually getting out from quarantine, getting around on errands, and commuting back to work. Riding a bicycle is a good alternative to respect physical distancing while getting back in shape after several weeks of staying at home.

This time may be a chance for an environmentally friendly mode of transportation to strive in busy cities. Still, there are many issues to address: public space availability, safety, comfort, maintenance, and parking. Let’s see how different parts of the world are tackling these issues.

Environmental benefits

Freight and personal transportation is responsible for 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions [1]. Environmentally, a bicycle is a symbol of decarbonized transportation and sustainable cities. Bicycles are an eco-friendly means of transportation that requires no fossil fuels.

As an energy-efficient form of transportation, bicycle uses renewable human power in the most efficient way compared to other alternatives to move people and product from point A to point B: there are no greenhouse gas emissions emitted per km on a bike compared to 220g of CO2eq per km in a car [2].

Safe bike lanes

Cycling is an efficient way of using scarce space in urban areas. However, governments and cities have been struggling to give more space to bicycles. This is a chicken and egg problem. There are not enough bicycles to reserve them space and there are not enough bike lanes for bike riding to go mainstream.

Now everything has changed. Many cities across the world have created additional dedicated bike lanes post Covid-19.  

The UK government has put forward a £2 billion package to foster cycling and walking. Pop-up bike lanes with protected space for cycling, safer junctions, and cycle and bus-only corridors will be created.

Bogota, the capital city of Columbia stands 12th in 2019 Copenhagenize index, which ranks bicycle-friendly cities. Bogota has extended its formerly Sunday only Ciclovia program to all days of the week and added 80 km of bike lanes to its 550 km of existing ones.

In New York City, officials have announced that up to 100 miles of streets will have extended bike lanes and sidewalks.

There are precautions cyclists need to adhere to in order to make their commute as safe and stress-free as possible: knowing the route in advance, being alert of the environment, putting a helmet on, wearing reflective clothing, and having appropriate lighting to be seen on the road.

Secured parking

Where and how can you confidently park your bicycle knowing it will not be stolen, or damaged by weather, and will not disturb pedestrian traffic? Parking is indeed also an issue. The cities are struggling to keep up with the demand and manage sometimes anarchic parking.

In the Netherlands, a giant bike parking facility is conveniently located directly next to Utrecht Central Station, Stationsplein. It caters space for 12,500 bikes.

Automated underground bicycle parking systems are popular in China and Japan. The machinery frees up space on the surface. One system can hold 200 bikes.  To see it working, watch this “futuristic” video.

When you can’t park or when you want to travel longer distances, you may take your bike with you in a bus or a train. This can prove difficult in busy public transit. The region of Seattle has found a solution. Bikes can be installed at the front of buses.

Access to bikes

First things first. You need a bike. There are many ways to get one, from buying to rental or leasing.

Most large cities now have bike rental services. Rental systems can be with fixed stations or dockless, whereby bikes can be left anywhere.

Itaú’by Tembici in São Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Santiago or Velib by Smovengo in Paris both provide traditional and electric bikes. Riders park them at pre-defined spaces in bike stations.

Free Float bike rental has suffered from theft and damage. Few are still operating. Among them Dott in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Poland, Mobike in China.

Electric bicycles or e-bikes participate in making bike mainstream. Less effort is needed to drive longer distances or carry stuff and you can stay fresh after riding your bike. However, electric bikes come at a hefty price compared to traditional ones: €500 to €3000 for an electric bike compared to as low as €200 for a traditional one.

Leasing models make electric bikes more affordable. Such a model is rolled out by the Dutch company, Swapfiets in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. For €75 per month, you get an electric bike of your own with the additional benefit of including repair and maintenance.

Repair and maintenance

The rental and leasing models leave the hassle of repairing and maintaining to the lessor or the rental company: a big advantage. Repairing a flat tire, adjusting brakes or derailleur, or tightening the chains are common tasks of the everyday cyclist. They are not easy when you are not into “do it yourself” or are not equipped with the proper tools (and need to stay clean in your business attire).

Going to the nearest bike shop is an obvious choice. Alternatively, you may rely on online platform that puts you in contact with a technician that comes and repairs your bike at your place. Cyclofix or Repair and Run are such services operating in major cities in France.

Bikes, once all similar now come in very different shapes to cater to various needs:  design and performance, delivery of goods, kid transportation, and city commuting.

The number of electric bike firms is growing. High-end ones compete on design and functionalities.

How do homeless people get out of being homeless?

It very much depends on the situation. There are roughly as many ways to escape homelessness as there are to end up homeless in the first place, and how one particular individual climbs out of homelessness has a lot to do with their social connections, financial situation, mental state, physical health, age, skills, and a host of other factors. Oftentimes, there are a few things that need to come together before a person can secure permanent housing for themselves. In general, though, some of the big ways that people escape homelessness include:

Assistance from family and friends. Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of homeless people do have non-homeless family and friends who care about them, and they are one of the best resources out there for escaping homelessness. People usually resist turning to their loved ones for help in the early days of homelessness, and may hide their situation for as long as they can to avoid embarrassment. If you’re newly homeless or experiencing short-term homelessness, however, your family and friends are your best ticket out of your situation - they may be able to give you a warm, safe, clean place to crash while you try to figure things out; your friends may be able to lend you the money you need for that bus or plane ticket to go home to live at your parents’ house; friends and family may be willing to spot you the money you need for a security deposit and first/last month’s rent, so you can get into a new place without having to wait to build up your savings; they may have connections to job opportunities, and they may be willing to co-sign on a lease or loan so you can get into housing or educational opportunities. If you are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless and your loved ones aren’t aware of your situation, let them know as soon as possible, even if it’s embarrassing - people who care about you are your best resource for dealing with your situation.

Improving their employment situation. Many people in this country live paycheck-to-paycheck and have very few savings; a small blip in employment (layoff, fired, hours cut, contract not renewed, illness, injury, etc) can be all it takes to make someone homeless. Around 40-60% of homeless people have jobs, but don’t have jobs that are stable or lucrative enough to let them afford housing. For these people, the main route out of homelessness is finding a job, or finding a better, higher-paying job. Some people are able to do this quite quickly - they may have marketable skills and good experience, and ending up homeless is largely a case of bad luck. They may be able to find a good job within a few weeks of losing their old one, and get back on their feet quickly. Other people may not have many marketable skills, or they may have other factors that make make finding a job tough (employment gaps, criminal record, did not complete secondary school, etc) - and it may take more time and effort for them to find a job that lets them afford housing. 

Enrolling in social welfare programs. Many people like to moan and groan about “welfare queens” and “freeloaders” accessing social programs they don’t qualify for, but the reality of the situation is that there are way, way more people avoiding social programs they are eligible for than there are people committing fraud. One quarter of Americans who qualify for food stamps (now called SNAP) do not apply; among seniors, a full 40% who qualify don’t apply. Many people of the people who end up homeless either don’t realize they can get public assistance, or they are intentionally avoiding public assistance because of personal pride or social stigma - and the way to get out of homelessness can often involve enrolling in those programs. Enrolling in disability or unemployment benefits, seeking assistance from food stamps or food banks, enrolling in back-to-work programs that provide connections, assistance and training for job searches and getting on waiting lists for affordable, low-income housing can be necessary steps for getting a person off the streets. 

Addressing mental health and addiction issues. For people who experience more complex, long-term or recurring homeless, two of the big problems are generally addiction and mental health problems. These often go hand-in-hand - people who have mental health issues and don’t have access to treatment often self-medicate with street drugs, which only worsens the mental health issues, and a vicious cycle begins. Having issues with mental health or addiction can make it nearly impossible to maintain stable employment, manage money, or meet the conditions of your housing - and so escaping homelessness generally means that you need to break free from this cycle. This can be a long, difficult process. Depending on how severe your issues are, you may require inpatient psychiatric care, inpatient rehabilitation, regular sessions with a therapist or drug counsellor or both, assistance with your psychiatric medication, and placement in supported housing with staff who are properly trained to help you. Unfortunately, getting all these supports in place can be difficult, and it may take a lot of time. 

Locating or waiting for affordable housing. Sometimes the solution to homelessness is also the simplest: many people who experience homelessness escape by finding new housing that costs less than the housing that they lost. For people whose homelessness is more of a temporary “blip”, this can involve simply searching online for an apartment or room for rent that fits within their budget, or finding a roommate or two to seek out an affordable lease together. For people whose needs are more complex, this may involve going on the waiting list for section 8 housing, or other forms of subsidized housing. Unfortunately, the waiting list for this kind of housing can be long - New York City is currently processing housing applications that were submitted before 2009. The wait can be years or decades, especially if you live in a large and high-cost city with a large homeless population. 

Seeking assistance from a social services agency. This is what I do for a living! The network of social welfare programs, benefits, entitlements and non-profit services is confusing and difficult to navigate (often by design). For many people who experience chronic and complex homelessness, it can be too difficult to manage on their own. That is where social service agencies come in. As a case manager at one of these agencies, I know what benefits and programs are out there, I know what the requirements are, and I know what documentation my clients will need in order to enroll. I keep track of appointments and important documents, search for openings in programs, communicate with workers at other programs, and remind my clients about things they need to do. I can also provide advocacy and inside connections; if I call someone on a client’s behalf and let the person know that I am the client’s case manager at [giant social service agency], I am more likely to get a good outcome than the client is if they called by themselves - the person on the other end of the line knows that I am likely documenting the call and reporting the outcome to my supervisor, and they know that [giant social services agency] will be down their throat if they stonewall me. I can also draw on my personal connections to get the outcomes my clients need - maybe X housing unit doesn’t usually deal with clients like the one I’m serving, but if I’m buddies with one of the social workers there, sometimes I can call them directly and get them to make an exception. Getting involved with a social services agency isn’t the right fit for everyone who experiences homelessness, but it can be an essential step for many people. 

When we talk about “escaping homelessness”, there are a couple of big things that we also need to keep in mind. There are two different types of homelessness (short-term and long-term), and they are two very different beasts. The 60-something man who has been sleeping on your street corner for years and screaming at pigeons is in a very different situation from the 22-year-old who is living in his car for a couple of weeks because his new job doesn’t start until next month. Both of these people are homeless, but one of them is likely to escape homelessness very quickly, with little to no outside support - the other one may never escape at all. When we talk about “homeless people”, most people’s minds jump right to those extreme, complex, long-term cases with tragic backstories, but those are exceptions, not the rule. 75-85% of homeless people are short-term homeless; they are usually homeless only once in their lifetime, and escape within a couple of weeks; the majority are homeless for less than a month. The same day that Amazon vice president Brian Huseman testified before the New York City Council about HQ2, Staten Island warehouse employees and organizers from the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU) announced a plan to form a union at the Staten Island FC, citing exhausting and unsafe working conditions better optimized for warehouse robots than employees. These conditions are far from unique to Staten Island—stories about the grueling pace, unhealthy environment, and precarity of contract workers at fulfillment centers have been reported regularly as far back as 2011.

Amazon has approximately 850 warehouses around the world according to logistics consultancy MVPWL International, which vary from fulfillment centers like this one in Chattanooga to sorting centers, food distribution hubs, and delivery stations. And yet, when the Staten Island FC was first announced in 2017, a small handful of media outlets made note of this record. Unions and community leaders weren’t galvanized against the Staten island FC the way they were by HQ2 or the way they had been when Wal-Mart attempted to come to New York in 2011. In some ways, the HQ2 debacle gave new life and momentum to an organized labor challenge previously hidden in plain sight (or at least in the outer boroughs).

Of course, Amazon’s logistics spaces aren’t solely confined to far-flung corners of the New York metro area: There are two Prime Now distribution hubs in New York, one in Brooklyn and the other at the previously mentioned Midtown Manhattan location. Same-day delivery service Prime Now originated from that Midtown warehouse in 2014 and spawned Amazon Flex, an app-based platform for freelance delivery drivers to distribute Prime Now packages. (Ironically, one of the reasons Amazon has been able to become so effectively entrenched in the city is because of this kind of contingent labor force—any car in New York City can become an Amazon Flex delivery vehicle, any apartment a Mechanical Turker workplace.)

The art of logistics also depends in part on the art of marketing. To support that marketing endeavor, Amazon has a 40,000-square-foot photo studio in a former glass manufacturing plant in Williamsburg that produces tens of thousands of images for Amazon Fashion, the company’s online apparel venture. The company’s forays into fashion, while less publicized, may also position it to become one of the largest retailers of clothing in the world.

New York is also home to 260 Amazon Lockers: pickup and package return sites for select products typically located in 7-Elevens and other bodega-like environments. Like Prime Now, the Lockers streamline and automate a process that would normally involve lines at the post office. First appearing in New York in 2011, the 6-foot-tall locker units can range between 6 and 15 feet wide, with the individual lockers in each unit capable of holding packages no larger than 19 x 12 x 14 inches (roughly larger than a shoebox).

While early reports indicated that store owners received a small monthly stipend for hosting the lockers, the main sell for store owners is the possibility of luring in more foot traffic. But a 2013 Bloomberg article noted that smaller businesses were frustrated by the limited returns from installing the lockers and increased power bills (lockers use a digital passcode system, requiring electricity and connectivity). There is an irony in the fact that for almost a decade before the HQ2 debacle, small businesses have been ceding physical space to Amazon only to be stuck with monolithic storage spaces serving little direct benefit....  (((etc etc)))
