DISCLAIMER: The characterizations are mainly based on collective and selective headcanons and personal views and understanding. Some OCs will be included. Don't take them too seriously.

Also, some songs I skimmed from my playlist will be referenced for scenarios that are brought to mind, not in order of events. I just love the 'what ifs' and what happened in between for this pairing. If there's nothing after a song, then the scenario(s) is self-explanatory.

The farm was his home, even when he went off to pursue his studies in the city, he might not be big on people but he holds his family close enough. Rebuilding after a certain natural disaster brings him home, which knocks out having a family gathering for the next decade cause that’s a lot of relatives he won’t remember but to help his dads is all that matters, especially in their old age)

Headcannons and scenarios (I know most of these are not as angsty but the lot of you can make it up tenfold so how about some more soft stuff):

- For living in civilization for all his life, Orion isn’t up to date with the ‘pop culture’ but at least he has Shockwave to show him the good tunes, like classical and synth

- That one time when Orion got him a stuffed cow teddy with a recording of Fluffy Ears’s moos for his birthday. Since when did he have the time to acquire he still doesn’t know

- In their mech, they’re a beast on the battlefield. It might not have been amazing compared to the current mechs and pilots, but they’ve lasted this far with just the two of them for a reason. Got a marksman’s eye and the strength to rip the faces off those tentacled fuckers. Sometimes Orion forgets to take it down a notch outside the battlefield.

- Afters years of piloting evolving mechs, it takes a toll on the both of them, especially for Orion. Fatigue and back pains riddle him, along with a certain accident that caused him to wear a mask to not further damage his lungs. It also made his voice more deep with a certain timbre that gives Shockwave a soothing feeling compared to Orion youthful and lighter voice before.

- When Shockwave isn’t in piloting, he’d be in a lab overseeing the other operations on mech tech and poking at the Quintesson corpses. Orion had Ironhide to converse with and try as he might, he hasn’t had a chance to successfully evade Ratchet hawk like supervision. When Shockwave was working on the down times from attacks, there would be a myriad of medical tests and checks that would be at best tedious and “unpleasant” at worst. Post-medical exam cuddles are mandatory for them, behind closed doors of course.

Why are people on Twitter saying that xiao zhan knew the title of wang yibo's new song before anyone else. What is your opinion on this?

It's not just on Twitter, it's being talked about pretty much everywhere turtles congregate.

Fake, fan fiction, CPN.

The whole thing actually started on Weibo - as almost all turtle content does, whether it's a gif or a candy or a theory or whatever.

In fact, 90% of turtle content you see on Twitter came directly from Weibo, and most of it isn't attributed to the original creator. Most people on international social media platforms (including Tumblr) are doing this. People just casually take the ideas, screen caps, art, theories, etc. of Weibo turtles and bring it into the international fandom without any attribution.

So if you see someone in the international fandom who seems to always have a lot of turtle content and none of it is ever attributed to someone on Weibo, most of it is probably not their original thoughts. They probably scooped that content from a C-turtle and are taking credit for themselves.

Anyway, this candy comes from a XZ Studio video post on GG's birthday that contained a caption, "Have you thought of a title yet?"

And on that same day there was a reblog of GG's birthday photo post that included the phrase, "万物可爱" which is the title of DD's new song.

From this turtles are clowning that GG knew the title before anyone else. But I think that's a pretty safe bet without these hints, isn't it? I mean, DD probably tells GG everything before anyone else hears of it.

A cracky Yizhan idea

I get so bored re-reading the same collection of stories to my kiddo every night that I've started fantasizing fic ideas into the scenarios to cope. Most of them are simple retellings of fairytales and I like to give them the 'ole LGBTQ twist now that I'm back into writing -- it's a female soldier that gets together with the princess, or it's a poor but handsome servant who gets the wish granted to go meet the prince. And then a few nights ago this idea spun out of my head...

Yizhan... but its Rapunzel...??

Wang Yibo, handsome prince and heir to a small kingdom. Restless, full of wanderlust to see the world around him, which is a fine way to escape the doldrums of court intrigue and the endless bickering.

Xiao Zhan, devastatingly handsome and blessed with a beautiful singing voice, thought he was finding a better life for himself but ends up getting kidnapped at a young age and locked away in a tower.

(Wajijiwa plays the evil witch? Or just a generic (yes this is a metaphor for the idol industry) character has Xiao Zhan trapped in his tower?)

Wang Yibo is riding through the forest one day and hears the most alluring but saddest singing voice through the trees. Follows it to the biggest tower he's ever seen. Circles it a hundred times trying to find a way up, listens to the stunning voice go through several heartbreaking songs, but eventually it becomes too dark and he has to give up and go home.

Comes back, day after day, lounging in the tallest trees near the tower, hoping for a glimpse of the owner of the voice. Is already half-way in love just listening to this person singing.

Finally witnesses the famous moment -- old witch comes out of the woods, stands at the bottom of the tower and calls up: "Zhanzhan, let down your hair!"

(Would I keep the hair trope? Not sure. We all love XZ with long hair though...)

WY watches the whole thing, about to vibrate off the tree in his excitement. Watches the witch leave. Goes back home to his castle and MAKES PLANS for operation "Meet Zhanzhan" that he will execute asap the next day.

WY goes back, calls for Zhanzhan, gets up into the tower. It's a giant mess of meet-cute with a splash of canon-typical violence when XZ starts throwing punches at the sight of a stranger coming over his window sill. Of course they eventually calm down, WY is charming and ready to woo, he's even brought gifts for his favorite singer. XZ is embarrassed his singing can be heard so well, but also flattered, and warms up quickly to having a new friend.

They talk for ages but eventually WY has to leave. XZ gives him a rough idea of the witch's visiting schedule so WY knows when its safe to come back.

Lots more clandestine meetings happen over the course of a month or so. WY is heavily smitten now that he's got the real thing in front of him, XZ is in love but (as typical) a bit slower to get with it. It's scary to have big feelings for the first person you've met since being locked up in a tower when you were twelve.

Eventually they have their first kiss/make-out session, and now when WY asks XZ to come with him he's all on board and ready to blow this joint. Tower life sucks when you've got a hot boyfriend that wants you to come live with them for the rest of your lives.

They make plans, all seems to be going well... until XZ accidentally drops the ball and lets his new relationship status slip to the witch during a visit.

Witch does witchy things, banishes XZ to some far off place. WY comes back to the tower and goes up the hair, only to get a face-full of ugly witch and then- then----- I can't even write it. Ugh. 🥺

So much angst. WY is blind and miserable and depressed and wanders around for what feels like forever and all he has left to go on is his love and devotion and conviction that he'll find his Zhan-ge again somewhere in the world.

One day WY hears a beautiful voice singing that makes his heart soar with happiness and rushes to find the arms of his love once more. They embrace, lots of ugly crying, some of XZ's tears get on WY's face -- bam, blindness cured. Turns out the witch was even more of a jealous prick than WY realized.

And they lived happily ever after 😁

One of the best things about Xiao Zhan’s recent vlogs has been discovering new music and musicians! I am SO grateful to him for using a song by Sarah Kang, bcz I had no idea she existed and she’s now one of my new favorite artists 🥰💗 Such a beautiful voice! She’s an indie performer in the US and doesn’t have a huge following (yet!) So I got to thinking - how in the world did Xiao Zhan even hear about her??

Well, I think I might have found a clue 😏 I noticed that one of her Instagram followers is Henry Lau - who just happens to have been on SDC season 4 with Wang Yibo.

Sarah and Henry actually follow each other and have had some cute interactions! She is originally from South Korea, where Henry trained as an idol - I’m not sure exactly what the connection is, but it seems clear they know each other at least professionally!

It seems pretty likely to me that performers like Henry and Yibo (and Xiao Zhan) would talk about music and other artists, and make recommendations to each other based on those discussions. Or maybe they have a SDC captains group chat where they share about new artists they like? 😄

Either way, the ONLY connection I see for Chinese superstar Xiao Zhan to come across obscure US-based Korean talent Sarah Kang is through Yibo 🔥

I can't stop screaming about Paava Kaidhagal enough, and this episode was so emotional. I love this song so much, and it is a beautiful song but I still feel so much pain listening to this. When this starts playing on shuffle, it always a bittersweet feeling.

Of course I was gonna include this. There is no way I was gonna leave this out. It is my baby's song from my fave series. It is special. I still remember not being able to process the song when it came out during episode 11. Like I could not watch the MV after the episode. It was such an emotional attack. I would have also included Just Friend?, but I could not find the rock version the both of them did for OhmNanon1stFM. That version of Just Friend was always be on another level!

The whole CQL soundtrack is beautiful. But this is my favourite song from the OST. Yibo's voice is just so beautiful and it goes straight to your heart. He brings out LWJ's emotions so beautifully.

Zhang Yixing: Grandline4, Shanghai (August 2024)

Four very short days after I arrived in China, I left Hangzhou where I’m living and got on a bullet train to Shanghai. Thinking back, it was insane of me to do this. There was so much I had to organize before I started work, but this was an opportunity of a lifetime. I had been trying to get tickets to Grandline 4 quite literally anywhere in the world, but none of the dates worked with my moving schedule. I felt like the only Beiker on planet earth that was going to miss this concert series. Then, a couple of weeks before my departure from Australia, in a very China-esque fashion, but especially typical of his studio, they dropped dates and ticket sales for Shanghai. It was his last stop on the Grandline tour for 2024, so it was going to be like the Hunger Games trying to get tickets.

Fortunately, I have an army of awesome women around me in this fandom and with their help, I was able to secure tickets for BOTH Shanghai dates. I was also fortunate enough to see him when he headlined Metamoon in New York City while I was living there but he was only on stage for 45 minutes, and it wasn’t his show. Besides, everyone knows Zhang Yixing in China is superior so I was simply dying to see him on his home turf.

And oh my god, he did not disappoint.

I joined the fandom after finding him on Street Dance of China Season 3. I showed up for Yibo but left with an obsession for the introverted Krump King of China. I fell in the Yixing hole back then and I have no desire to climb out – haha! But when I joined the fandom back then, and actually since then as well, it seemed that Yixing was moving through the world with an unhealthy amount of melancholy. Maybe it’s just me, but for so long all he was talking about was how lonely he was, his age, and his fears about his unrealized dreams. Now I understand that right after I joined his fandom COVID hit and many people around the world fell into a massive slump, but it was more than that with him. It seeped into every live stream he did, every interview, and his song lyrics became about these feelings, and it painted his face for a few years.

Well, after being in Shanghai, I think the collective agreement among fans is, that version of Zhang Yixing seems gone. His body is super healthy, and it’s obvious he’s done work on his mental health and the way in which he looks at the world in front of him. He radiates joy and happiness, and it is an absolute blessing to witness. It was unexpected, but his happiness and his contentedness eminates off of him. His smile is full and genuine. It was, hands down, my favourite part of both dates. I am so thankful I got to see him like that and I really hope that whatever he’s doing, he continues to do more of it!

I made it all the way through night one and almost all the way through night two before the tears started. He closed the second night with Breathe and if you follow me on other socials you will know I’ve been screaming about this song since he dropped it. It speaks to my heart and soul right now and I feel like he wrote it about me. Isn’t it funny how music can touch us like that? Anyway, the opening beats of Breathe started and I couldn’t hold my tears in. The Chinese auntie next to me chuckled at me, but it’s fine!

I really hope I get the chance to see him in China again. Shanghai was the last stop for 2024 as he’s focusing more on his stage and screen performances for now but music is his life so I’m sure there will inevitably be more shows next year.

A quick shoutout to his studio. I know as a fandom we tend to collectively and loudly shit all over the incompetence of his staff, but they really came through for me and my friend on night one. We were sitting in different sections (like everyone in China does) and she was much further away from the stage than me. We asked security if my friend could come through to my section and take some close up photos, but they weren’t having it. Someone from Yixing’s staff saw the exchange, clocked that we were both foreigners, and came to our rescue. He made a call and escorted us down to the barrier for photo ops. It was so nice of them, and it made our night – especially for my friend who wouldn’t have had the chance for such photos otherwise. So we’re on a no-ragging-on-studio kick – FOR NOW!

If you ever get the chance to see this wonderful soul in the flesh, don’t hesitate. He is worth every single dollar I spent on tickets – and I spent a loooottttttt.

I love him I love him I love him I love him. Probably not a normal amount, but that’s okay.

Currently reading: slowly working my way through Who We Are and How We Got Here: Ancient DNA and the New Science of the Human Past. It's good, and interesting, but the details of how the genetic analysis is done kind of make my eyes glaze over.

Most recent movie I watched: Argentina 1985, about the prosecution of leaders of the military junta. Not cheery! But very good. Gave me a healthy sense of perspective about the difficulties of my own trials--like, I'm exhausted and consuming nothing but chocolate milk for days and days, but at least no one is leaving bullets on my kitchen table or chasing me in the middle of the night!

China’s “danmei” genre is booming in the West

The article “How to Tell Chinese Stories Well” (July 14) overlooks an important genre that is growing in popularity in the West and is more reflective of contemporary Chinese life than works from decades ago such as Shanghai Life and Death or The Wild Swans.

I am referring to the danmei genre of online novels. Danmei is a term that originated in Japan. This new genre has spawned a number of very successful online novels that have been adapted into extremely popular Chinese TV series and translated into English. A prominent example is The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, which was adapted into the Chinese TV series The Untamed in 2019 and translated into English and is available on Amazon.

Untamed made two young actors, Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo, famous in China. Another very successful work is Erha and His White Cat Shizun, which made the New York Times bestseller list in English. The English version has a wide readership in the West and is available in paperback.

Danmei novels celebrate “boys’ love”, which is officially frowned upon. A major production based on Erha, produced by Tencent, has been shelved. But the genre has a large following in China and abroad, inspiring fan art, fan works and merchandise.

Many danmei online novels are written by women for women. Why are they so popular among Chinese women? Their popularity reflects the frustrations of contemporary Chinese women: they are trapped between traditional, realistic, family-oriented marriage concepts and a desire for romance and true love, as celebrated in danmei novels. Such novels have become a channel for their fantasy and escapism. Surprisingly, these novels have also been loved by Western audiences.

While TV series based on such novels have been banned, animated versions of some popular works are still in production. The resilience of the genre, which is seen by the authorities as a departure from the official "main melody" works, reflects the delicate relationship between the authorities and the artists who create them. Most of the time, the authorities have the upper hand, but the ban has not stopped private enterprises and creative talents from finding space for the genre to thrive.
