My Relationship with Nature

I consider myself extremely lucky to have been exposed to the wonders of nature so often throughout my life. I come from a family of avid outdoorsmen/outdoorswomen; so whether it be hiking, camping, canoeing, or cross country skiing, the outdoors have never been out of reach for me. I truly believe that my hundreds of trips in nature have shaped me as a person, and I think each one contributed in a small way to the development of my passion for environmentalism.

It hasn’t always been easy, though. Many times come to memory where I was practically dragged out the door and stuffed into our big Toyota Sienna for a family hike or ski. Though I resisted initially, I always, always, felt refreshed, happy, and emotionally rejuvenated after the activity was over. I have come to understand that these feelings didn't come from the physical activity itself, but rather the setting in which we were doing it. Nature has a strange power over us humans; it is not natural for us to be stuck inside, staring out of the window at a concrete jungle all day. We are meant to be exploring the outdoors, winding through paths in the forest, and breathing the fresh air. When we don’t get our nature “fix”, we suffer because of it, often without even knowing. This is why doctors have been prescribing time in nature to people more and more these days - the emotional and physical benefits of being outside are just too many to count! (NCC, 2019)

Another source of my exposure to nature was the whopping 12 years I spent in scouting. I went through beavers, cubs, scouts, and then venturers, only stopping when things became too busy during high school. Throughout these 12 years, I learned so much about the value of natural spaces. Scouting emphasized the importance of understanding the cultural and natural history behind each area adventuring into it, both so that we could appreciate what had led to the area existing in its current state, but also to know what to do and not do while exploring these areas in order to manage our human impact. We were always cautioned to “take only pictures, leave only footprints”; a motto that has stuck with me to this day.

These days, my sense of appreciation and wonder for nature still stands. I try to find time each day to get outside and go for a walk in Preservation Park or the Arboretum in Guelph. After a day stuck inside studying for exams, nothing makes me feel better than getting out for a walk in amongst the trees. There is something special, though, about exploring someplace completely new; Mother Nature supplies us with such variety that it's hard to justify taking the same trip twice. This is why my family and I have gone to so many different natural destinations across North America, including the Grand Canyon (we hiked down to the bottom!), Washington State, Banff, The Yukon, the Adirondack Mountain Range, the British Columbia Rockies, Mexico, and so many more. Some of the best memories in my life have come from these various expeditions into the wild!

1. Get the Template

According to vehicle specs, this minivan is about 200” long and about 70” high. So we’ll need to use a paper size large enough to accomodate. From (File > New) under Name: type Sienna. Set the width to 210” and height to 80”, and choose RGB for the color mode.

To find the correct template, open Window > Dockers > CONNECT. Search for “Sienna,” and you’ll find a template with four views: front, back, left, and right. Drag this clip art onto your page. Because only one view of the four is needed, ungroup the template by right-clicking on it and selecting Ungroup Objects. Then you can erase all but the view of the side we’ll be wrapping. For this template, set its width to 200” in the Interactive Property Bar, making sure the aspect ratio is maintained, and place it within the paper borders.

Tip: When supplying art work for a vehicle wrap to a print shop, be sure that the flat distance between the wheels matches that measurement on the actual car. This is the easiest distance to measure on a car.

2. Create the Power Clip

Now we want to use the vehicle outline to define the boundary for content we’ll add to the wrap. With the Pick tool, right-click on the outermost curve of the template and choose Frame Type > Create Empty PowerClip Frame. (You can also find this curve at the end of the object list in the Object Manager.) The PowerClip frame is indicated by the large X.

3. Add the Content

Now we can create or bring in the elements we want to appear on the vehicle: logo, phone number, catch phrase, clip art - you name it. It’s helpful to lay out all objects in empty space first, approximately matching where they will go on the car itself.

4. Move the Content into the Frame

Select the first element to move - in this case the stylized houses along the bottom. When moving objects inside a PowerClip, you’ll notice the frame turns grayish-blue. Affinity graphic design software. When you complete the move, the objects are trimmed along the edges of the PowerClip.

Moving subsequent objects into the frame works the same way - just be sure to press the W key while moving objects, to place them within the PowerClip

5. Isolate the Frame

The PowerClip and its contents are what will be sent to the print shop. You can easily find these objects in the Object Manager.

Aurora Acquires Uber’s Automated Driving Unit–And Uber’s Cash

With the acquisition of Uber’s ATG unit Aurora becomes one of the biggest self-driving tech … [] developers.

Ever since an Uber UBER automated driving prototype struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona, in March 2018, there’s been speculation that the ride-hailing pioneer may abandon its effort to develop its own robotaxis. Uber hasn’t entirely given up that effort, but the billions of dollars being spent by its Advanced Technology Group (ATG) is no longer going to count against Uber’s balance sheet because it’s going to be part of self-driving tech startup Aurora Innovation. Uber is also investing $400 million in the Silicon Valley startup.

“There are not going to be a whole lot of players who actually make it across the finish line” in the race to commercialize autonomous driving, Aurora CEO Chris Urmson tells Forbes. “We’re excited about this deal because it accelerates us and creates the space and the pathway for us to be one of those winners.”

Aurora is acquiring 100% of ATG in an all-stock transaction. Much as it has done with other companies that have acquired its now-former business units. Uber’s investment in Aurora pushes the Palo Alto, California-based company’s funding to date to more than $1 billion.

Cofounded by Urmson, the former head of Google’s Self-Driving Car Project (now Waymo), Aurora is also led by Sterling Anderson, a Tesla TSLA veteran, and Drew Bagnell, who previously worked for Uber ATG. The combination of Aurora’s nearly 700 employees with approximately 1,200 ATG engineers and developers

Since going public in 2019, Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi was been promising investors that the company was moving toward reaching profitability. To that end, the company has shed several money-losing business units including its micromobility division and now ATG. When ATG was established back in 2015, then CEO Travis Kalanick was projecting that automated Uber vehicles would be widely replacing human drivers by 2018.

Obviously that hasn’t happened and is unlikely to be the case for quite a few more years. In fact, Uber isn’t even seen as being among the leaders in this still nascent sector so it makes sense that it would want to off-load the ATG unit. The surprise if there is one is that Aurora is the buyer. Urmson is a pioneer in automated driving, having led the Carnegie Mellon team that won the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge competition before going on to lead the Google GOOG self-driving car project until it became Waymo. 

Even before divesting itself of ATG, Uber took on outside investors in the division. In April 2019, Toyota, Denso and Softbank Vision Fund together invested $1 billion in ATG when the unit was valued at $7.25 billion. In 2018, Toyota invested $500 million in Uber and agreed to partner with ATG to deploy its technology in a pilot-scale deployment of automated Toyota Sienna minivans, a project which still hasn’t happened.

Aurora is prioritizing autonomous trucking and logistics for now and isn’t ready to announce joint projects with Uber at this time, Urmson says. There’s also no plan for Aurora to eventually become part of Uber down the line, despite the investment and the addition of Khosrowshahi to its board.

“We’re building Aurora into an independent company. We’re excited to have them as an investor, but they’re going to be a minority investor. A significant minority investor, but a minority investor,” he says. “We’re going to continue on.”

Given the challenges ATG has faced in developing its own automated driving system, it’s not entirely clear that Aurora will get a significant technical benefit from the acquisition. According to sources that spoke on background, other automated driving companies that got a chance to acquire ATG all took a pass on the Uber unit.

Merging the cultures of the Aurora and ATG groups may also prove challenging. Over the years, ATG has had significant cultural issues, demonstrating a willingness to cut corners to try to reach some endpoint prematurely. On the other hand, among the core values that Aurora publishes on its website are No Jerks, Operate with Integrity and Be Reasonable. While things have changed at Uber since Khosrowshahi, these values had no place in the Kalanick era. 

On the plus side for Aurora, they will certainly have more resources available to them with the addition of ATG’s engineers and facilities. The extra $400 million invested by Uber will also assist. With the extended timeline to commercialize automated driving, numerous companies in the field have struggled this year to raise capital. Starsky Robotics shut its doors, and Zoox was acquired by Amazon AMZN after failing to raise a new round. After the deal closes, Uber will have a 26% stake in Aurora and according to sources familiar with the matter, Aurora will have a valuation of $10 billion.

This deal also establishes a relationship between Aurora, Uber, Toyota and Denso which could be beneficial to Aurora. Uber has put more emphasis on goods movement in recent years and Aurora is targeting the trucking and delivery markets first for commercialization. When they do move into robotaxis, Uber can provide a deployment platform. The Toyota and Denso relationships can also help with Toyota potentially providing vehicles or utilizing the Aurora driver on its vehicles and Denso potentially being a manufacturing partner for the lidar sensors that Aurora is developing.

“What this means for us is we’re adding this incredible group of people, many of those folks have worked with Aurora people in the past so we’re looking forward to kind of reuniting those skills,” Urmson says. “The two teams have actually very similar missions and a vision for where this technology is going.”

TOP 20: THE BEST VEHICLES FOR THE FAMILY IN 2020 ACCORDING TO PARENTS MAGAZINE

Once again this year, Parents magazine gets wet by naming its best choices of vehicles for the family. Unlike last year, however, the publication is expanding its list of recommended vehicles to 20 (instead of 10 in 2019). Indeed, the magazine’s list this year includes a few additional categories, with the utility segment making up the majority of the models listed, unsurprisingly.

The magazine also considered the safety assessments carried out by the American institute NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). What’s more, the ‘family’ angle of the top 20 requires a test with child seat expert Abbie Patterson. Patterson, owner of the Super Car Seat Geek company, has tested all types of child booster seats in more than 50 car models.

Finally, automotive columnist Rob Stumpf, took the wheel of the vehicles in the child seat test to evaluate braking, steering, acceleration and a host of other parameters.

Minivans – Best Value: Kia Sedona

In the minivan segment, Kia Sedona takes home the honours with the best value for money because of its more affordable price in its basic livery. Toyota’s Sienna retains its competitive edge once again this year with its optional all-wheel drive system. This increased traction is undoubtedly an asset when road conditions are more difficult, as is its powerful V6 engine, but the Sienna will have to count the Chrysler Pacifica among its direct rivals next year, the American manufacturer having already confirmed the arrival of a four-wheel drive version of its Pacifica.

Three-row SUV – Best Value: Volkswagen Atlas

When the German automaker launched the development of its three-row SUV, it clearly had North America as its target. The magazine was especially seduced by the affordable price of the SUV in its most accessible version.

Three-row SUV – Better Redesign: Toyota Highlander

The change of model for 2020 does him the greatest good, the former Highlander which had been in service since model year 2014.
