Florida Beach Cottage

This is a post you want to save and come back to anytime when things are feeling a little blue, because I can almost guarantee that this home will leave you feeling a little lighter and much happier.

To say that I love this designer’s work is an understatement. She design homes that are tailored without losing their soul. In another words, she design interiors that are meant to be lived in and not just looked at.

Lisa Peterson, interior designer and co-owner of Pineapples, Palms, Etc. has always dreamed of living in a comfortable, relaxed, Florida Cracker style cottage, with views and breezes from the water that create her “Barefoot Dream” lifestyle. Peterson and her husband were fascinated by the “Old Florida” appeal of Hobe Sound. The unincorporated village, adjacent to Jupiter Island, is a little slice of heaven. Covered with Banyan trees, the neighborhood they chose to build their home was laden with history. The lot next door housed an Ice House in the late 1800’s and the stretch of Intracoastal waterway in front of the home was once the site of a ferry landing for boats to carry perspective land buyers to Jupiter Island.

“Cottage on Cabot” was built with the true Florida Cracker architecture of the past, and blends perfectly with its historic surroundings. Cracker architecture was used widely in the 19th century in Florida. Florida cracker homes are characterized by metal roofs, wrap around porches, long and straight central hallways from the front to the back of the home. Peterson loved this concept so she incorporated many windows and doors that open onto the large deck, allowing the constant ocean breeze to fill the house.

Pineapples, Palms, Etc., is a popular retail and interior design store in Jupiter, just 15 minutes away from the home, and is known for its crisp, modern coastal style, with a unique brand of casual elegance. The sisters opened the store in 2001, and it remains in the same location today, providing interior design services to locals, as well as many professional athletes and celebrities that reside in the area. Peterson took the vibe from the store, which is loaded with one-of-a-kind pieces and comfortable, slipcovered furniture and infused Cottage on Cabot with a similar energy. The result is open, airy and inviting.

Lisa’s main goal of this home was to achieve a home that fit the Old Florida neighborhood it sits in. She wanted it to look as though it could have been built 60+ years ago. As for the interior, she wanted something relaxing and tranquil that felt fresh and clean.

Full-scale Home Remodel Inspiration

A single dad recently hired the talented Lisa Furey of Lisa Furey Interiors (previously featured here & here) to help with the full-scale gut remodel of a contemporary style home overlooking a gorgeous duck pond and park in Villanova, PA. The designer selected all finishes, from flooring to the millwork. She designed custom cabinetry throughout the home, and selected the handmade tile, stone, plumbing and lighting. The designer also created furniture plans, made the furniture selection, designed window treatments and rugs. The best part of this job for her was creating a happy space for a great dad and his endearing young daughter.

Christina Anstead’s Worst Design Fails That’ll Make You Cringe

You already know and love Christina Anstead from “Flip or Flop,” the HGTV hit that follows Anstead and her ex-husband, Tarek El Moussa, as they transform grungy, run-down houses into jaw-dropping neighborhood gems.

Now, Anstead is also hard at work helping homeowners create the home of their dreams on “Christina on the Coast.”

And while Anstead’s signature beachy, SoCal design aesthetic usually impresses homeowners and buyers, she does sometimes miss the mark. (Hey, she can’t be perfect all the time!) Don’t make the same mistakes Anstead has made—instead, take notes on these home design flops so you can learn what not to do with your own home.

A kitchen that’s all white

It’s no secret that Anstead loves white kitchens—they’re clean, contemporary, and elegant. But sometimes she takes this white obsession a bit far. During one renovation, Anstead transformed a couple’s kitchen by adding white cabinets, a white farmhouse sink, a tan tile floor, and light-gray countertops.

The fix: Luckily, Anstead learned from her past mistakes while renovating another kitchen on “Christina on the Coast.” Though she selected white cabinets and countertops, she installed a bold, navy-blue backsplash throughout the kitchen, which adds just the right amount of color to what could have been a bland design.

Bathtubs rather than showers

Even while renovating her own master suite with her new hubby, Anstead made sure to incorporate a bathtub into the bathroom’s design. But bathtubs aren’t always the answer, since they can make a bathroom look dated and cluttered.

The fix: In another renovation, Anstead ditched the existing bathtub-shower combo and replaced it with a stunning shower-only design. With floor-to-ceiling glass shower doors, the renovated bathroom looked large and inviting.

Too minimalist an aesthetic

Anstead loves a modern, minimalist style with hard lines and industrial materials. She often chooses white or neutral paint colors, hangs very few paintings or photographs, and features just a few tastefully staged knickknacks. But that style doesn’t necessarily work for everyone, especially families who want their space to feel homey and personal.

The fix: In her own home, Anstead experimented with more bold statement pieces than ever before. She added huge, custom sayings to the walls, including lyrics from Elvis Presley‘s song “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” Her new home was anything but sterile; it was nice to see a more personal touch.

Too many cabinets

In addition to traditional upper cabinets, Anstead incorporated open shelves in this kitchen renovation.

Like many of us, Anstead typically gravitates toward traditional upper kitchen cabinets—big, tall, and, perhaps most importantly, with doors. But in a small kitchen, huge, bulky upper cabinets can sometimes make the room look small and stuffy.

The fix: Anstead gave one couple the best of both worlds by installing open shelves on one wall and traditional upper kitchen cabinets on another. The open shelves created a light, airy vibe that was perfect for showing off the couple’s unique style.

Not enough storage

Anstead wisely incorporated a row of cabinets in the dining room for added storage during this renovation.

Can a home really have too much storage? Probably not. Even so, Anstead sometimes skimps on storage. While renovating her friend’s master bedroom, Anstead removed an entire wall of closet organizers to make the room feel larger.

The fix: Anstead has learned to use every available nook and cranny to create extra storage space. In one episode, she added a row of lower cabinets and floating shelves to a spacious dining room for added storage.

Too much stone and metal

It’s no secret that Anstead loves crisp, clean design. She often uses industrial metal fixtures and stone countertops and backsplashes, including marble, granite, and quartz. But these stone and metal design elements can sometimes make a room feel cold and uninviting.

The fix: Anstead has started to incorporate wood tones into her renovations. She has used natural wood to help warm up a room by adding wooden barn doors, reclaimed wood accent walls, and wooden fireplace mantels.

Busy backsplashes

Anstead combined two very different tiles to create a funky backsplash in this kitchen renovation.

In one “Christina on the Coast” kitchen remodel, Anstead decided to combine two separate tiles to create one unique backsplash. The reason? The homeowners just couldn’t decide on a single backsplash they both liked. But by trying to offer a compromise, Anstead created a busy and downright bizarre backsplash.

The fix: In other renovations, Anstead has kept the backsplash simple yet powerful. She has installed monochromatic tiles in an unexpected geometric pattern, or chosen tiles with a pretty pattern in neutral colors.

Going over budget

Anstead blew her budget by knocking out these load-bearing walls during a kitchen renovation.

Boy oh boy does Anstead love to spend money—in fact, it’s practically one of her signature moves on “Christina on the Coast.” She loves to incorporate high-end finishes and expensive structural changes into her projects.

The fix: Anstead knew she needed to rein it in with one couple, whose budget was fixed at a mere $1,500. Somehow she managed to completely transform their master bedroom into a relaxing retreat with just a few simple changes. Big wow factor, small budget—she can do it, after all!

$2.2 Million Homes in Georgia, Massachusetts and New York

Rome, Ga. | $2.2 Million

A late 19th-century Carpenter Gothic house with four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a one-bedroom, one-bathroom carriage house and a saltwater swimming pool, on 5.65 acres

In the late 1990s, the owner, a commercial builder, renovated what was then a dilapidated home surrounded by virgin woods outside his hometown, Rome, 90 minutes northwest of Atlanta. The gated property backs onto the 311-acre Marshall Forest Preserve and is about a mile southwest of Rome, a city of about 36,000 built on seven hills (hence its name).

Size: 5,549 square feet

Price per square foot: $396

Indoors: Passing under a swooping gable, you enter a parlor with gleaming restored or reconstructed woodwork, one of the home’s six wood-burning fireplaces and a period brass-and-crystal chandelier. This was where business was conducted with tradesmen. More intimate guests were ushered into a living room to the left, which has a wall of built-in shelves surrounded by Gothic molding flanking a fireplace.

The formal dining room, which is also off the parlor, includes a fireplace and dentil crown molding and space to seat 16. The eat-in kitchen has mahogany-colored traditional cabinets with granite countertops, travertine floors and high-end appliances. The adjacent family room has a coffered ceiling, wall paneling and bookshelves with a distressed off-white-painted finish. It connects to a wood-paneled breakfast room with a floral glass pendant lamp hanging from a chain and views of the swimming pool and forest. A sunroom that extends across the back of the home has this view as well.

A hallway with damask-patterned wallpaper and a carved Victorian coat rack leads to the main-floor master suite; it includes a coffered ceiling and a metal spiral staircase up to a glass-walled yoga room. (That space is also accessible from a paneled shelf in the upstairs hallway that was once a secret passageway where precious objects were hidden.) The master bathroom has a polished dark-marble floor and shower and a claw-foot slipper tub.

Three additional bedrooms are upstairs. Two have fireplaces. The two second-floor bathrooms include one with vintage black-and-white harlequin-patterned floor tiles and a checkerboard wall trim.

Outdoor space: The house and swimming pool, which has an adjacent hot tub, are surrounded by lawns, paths and groomed garden beds. The three bays in the detached five-car carriage house are air-conditioned and could be used as a work space. The upstairs apartment has a bedroom, full bathroom, small den area and kitchenette. A second, two-car garage is underneath the main house, next to the original fruit cellar.

Newton, Mass. | $2.15 Million

A 1949 modernist house with five bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms, on 0.54 acres

Samuel Glaser, who partnered with Walter Gropius and the Architects Collaborative on the John F. Kennedy Federal Building in Boston (and who was the father of the actor Paul Michael Glaser, best known for playing a detective on the 1970s television series “Starsky & Hutch”), designed this suburban house for a family called Leventhal that owned a construction company. The house is in Oak Hill, one of 13 villages that make up the city of Newton, blocks from a variety of parks and schools and about seven miles southwest of Back Bay, in Boston.

Size: 3,842 square feet

Price per square foot: $560

Indoors: The second owner, an interior designer, renovated and expanded the house about 10 years ago, with improvements that included a larger kitchen, new windows, updated bathrooms and a new roof. The third, and current, owners upgraded the mechanical systems, lighting and hardscaping and installed a Tesla charger. Original features include custom cabinetry, light fixtures and interior doors with Lucite-and-chrome knobs.

The main entrance takes you into a foyer that leads, on the right, to a 500-square-foot living and dining room with a polished concrete floor, a stone fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking an extensive rear patio and lawn. A swinging door leads to a breakfast room with an L-shaped walnut banquette and an open kitchen. Lined on two sides with custom walnut cabinetry, the kitchen has Viking, Sub-Zero and Miele appliances and includes a pantry behind sliding walnut doors.

To the left of the main foyer is a half bathroom with Ann Sacks tile and a floating red birch vanity, and an office. There is also a laundry alcove off the breakfast area and a large mudroom next to the kitchen with an additional door opening to the patio.

The master bedroom sits directly above the living room and has its own fireplace in the stone chimney stack. The master bathroom was updated in 2013 with radiant-heated stone floors and a walk-in shower. The three additional bedrooms on this level include one at the front with an en suite bathroom and two at the rear that share a hallway bathroom. Both guest bathrooms have heated limestone floors.

A 1986 house with four bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms and a swimming pool, on 1.93 acres

This house is in a village of about 1,800 people that was originally known as Goosetown and has a number of large estates. It is about 25 miles north of Manhattan and a mile and a half from the center of Nyack proper, with its many businesses. The 61-acre Nyack Beach State Park, on the Hudson River, which is part of the Palisades Interstate Park system, is less than a mile up the road.

Indoors: Inspired by a Georgian Revival house in Newport, R.I., the building is guided by classical symmetry. The marble-floored foyer has an imperial staircase that curves up on two sides behind a pair of free-standing Doric columns. French doors to the left of the entrance open to a carpeted study with navy-blue walls and white built-in bookshelves. French doors on the right lead to a formal dining room with inlaid-wood floor borders and dentil crown molding.

Behind the study is a living room with oak floors, a 14-foot-high tray ceiling painted with a classical scene, chair-rail and picture moldings, a wood-burning fireplace and French doors on three sides, including an arched pair leading to a rear brick patio.

Behind the dining room is an eat-in kitchen with bleached-oak cabinets and Corian countertops, new stainless-steel appliances, a decorative wood-trimmed ceiling, a separate pantry and French doors opening to the back. The kitchen flows into a family room with a fireplace and yet another opportunity to step outside.

The second floor includes a master suite with access to a porch that offers seasonal Hudson views (the porch can also be reached through an arched door on the landing). The master bathroom is faced in tumbled marble tile and has a claw-foot tub and walk-in shower.

An additional three large bedrooms share a bathroom with double sinks and a combined tub and shower. A staircase in one of the guest rooms leads to a large carpeted space on the third floor lined with dormer windows. This level also has a full bathroom.

The unfinished walkout basement has poured-concrete floors and 12-foot ceilings.

Outdoor space: The home is called Walnut Hill after the many walnut trees on the property. The lot is terraced and includes brickwork around the saltwater swimming pool and adjacent hot tub. Parking is in an attached two-car garage.

I might be wrong, but I am starting to think that you can’t be a minimalist if you really like the farmhouse style. To truly achieve this welcoming look, you will want to layer your home with plenty of textures and fill each every room with character, personality and your special touch. This is what really makes the farmhouse style so appealing to many – the fact that you can stamp your own personality and create a home that reflects who you are and how you like to live.

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Farmhouse Interiors

“We are James and Kaycie Chiampi we have been married for 15 years and have 5 kids. We built our home about 4 years ago when we moved from our home town of Newport Beach CA to Salt Lake City UT.

I wanted to take our builder grade home and turn it into more of a custom home and with my background in interior design and my husband being a self taught woodworker it was a project we were excited to tackle!”

In our kitchen we have custom white kitchen cabinets with a medium glaze over the top to give them a more distressed look.

DIY Kitchen Island

We did a DIY project and wrapped our kitchen island with reclaimed wood.

We have grey/black granite countertops.

The flooring we have throughout the first floor is wood laminate flooring by Mohawk and the color is nutmeg chestnut.

Sunroom

Off our kitchen we add the sunroom with our builder and this is one of the most used rooms. It’s where we eat all our meals and we love all the natural light from the windows this room gives to the home!

Lighting: Capital Lighting Nira 44 Inch 6 Light Chandelier.

Dining Room

Dining room table was built by the homeowner’s husband.

Chandelier is Troy Lighting.

Paint Color

All the walls in our home except the bedrooms are Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore.

We did a fun project and built a DIY wood beam in the space between the kitchen and living room to define each space wile still keeping with the flow of our open floor plan. It’s one of my favorite projects and I have a tutorial on my blog.

Decor

The sofas are RC Willey. Other Beautiful Sofas/Sectionals: here (Best seller!), here, here, here & here (recommended!).

White grommet top curtains from IKEA.

Rugs: Metallic Cowhide Rug & Sisal Rug – similar.

Fireplace

The living room also has one of my favorite features and that’s our floor to ceiling stone fireplace. When we built our home the builder put in our fireplace but stopped the stone at the mantle. I always felt it was incomplete so my husband and I continued the stone to the ceiling and now it’s the focal point of the room! We also added a shiplap wall behind our tv.

Playhouse Bunkbed

In my youngest son’s room we built him a playhouse bed and it’s so fun!! He helped us pick out what he wanted it to look like and we built it.

Paint Color

The back wall is painted Dover Grey by Olympic and the other walls are Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore.

Twin Boys Bedroom Design

In my twins room we put up board and batten at 5’ tall all around the room and painted the top portion of the wall Icy Avalanche by Valspar. Their beds my husband and I built out of reclaimed wood.

Grid Board and Batten & Peonies

In my younger daughter’s room we did a fun wood wall behind her bed making squares out of strips of MDF then we painted it Icy Avalanche by Valspar. The rest of her room is painted Silver Fox by Benjamin Moore. We also added Peonies wall decals around her window to bring in that feminine touch and add some pops of pink.

Ceiling Fan: Hunter Ronan 52 in. LED Indoor Fresh White Ceiling Fan.

Draperies: here & here – similar.

Teen Bedroom

Downstairs we have our oldest daughters room and it is paint Silver Fox by Benjamin Moore. The headboard we built as well from reclaimed wood. We then made some brackets out of pipe and attached them to the headboard to hold the cage lights hanging on each side.

Master Bedroom

In the master we did a shiplap wall behind the bed.

Paint Color

The rest of the walls Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore.

Master Bathroom

In the master bathroom we painted the walls Dover Grey by Olympic. Our cabinets and countertops in the bathroom are the same as in our kitchen.

Faucets: Delta.

Backyard

Off the sliding doors that lead to our backyard we built a redwood deck. We created a fun dining area on here where we love to eat dinner in the summer time!

In our backyard we have created a few fun areas. The first one is our sitting area under our metal gazebo.
