Resistance & Results
Gandhi was not the man to nurse a grudge. On the outbreak of the South African (Boer) War in 1899, he argued that the Indians, who claimed the full rights of citizenship in the British crown colony of Natal, were duty-bound to defend it. He raised an ambulance corps of 1,100 volunteers, out of whom 300 were free Indians and the rest indentured laborers. It was a motley crowd: barristers and accountants, artisans and laborers. It was Gandhi’s task to instill in them a spirit of service to those whom they regarded as their oppressors. The British victory in the war brought little relief to the Indians in South Africa. The new regime in South Africa was to blossom into a partnership, but only between Boers and Britons. Gandhi saw that, with the exception of a few Christian missionaries and youthful idealists, he had been unable to make a perceptible impression upon the South African Europeans. In 1906 the Transvaal government published a particularly humiliating ordinance for the registration of its Indian population. The Indians held a mass protest meeting at Johannesburg in September 1906 and, under Gandhi’s leadership, took a pledge to defy the ordinance if it became law in the teeth of their opposition and to suffer all the penalties resulting from their defiance. Thus was born satyagraha (“devotion to truth”), a new technique for redressing wrongs through inviting, rather than inflicting, suffering, for resisting adversaries without rancor and fighting them without violence. The struggle in South Africa lasted for more than seven years. It had its ups and downs, but under Gandhi’s leadership, the small Indian minority kept up its resistance against heavy odds. Hundreds of Indians chose to sacrifice their livelihood and liberty rather than submit to laws repugnant to their conscience and self-respect. In the final phase of the movement in 1913, hundreds of Indians, including women, went to jail, and thousands of Indian workers who had struck work in the mines bravely faced imprisonment, flogging, and even shooting. It was a terrible ordeal for the Indians, but it was also the worst possible advertisement for the South African government, which, under pressure from the governments of Britain and India, accepted a compromise negotiated by Gandhi on the one hand and the South African statesman Gen. Jan Christian Smuts on the other. “The saint has left our shores,” Smuts wrote to a friend on Gandhi’s departure from South Africa for India, in July 1914, “I hope for... ever.” A quarter-century later, he wrote that it had been his “fate to be the antagonist of a man for whom even then I had the highest respect.” Once, during his not-infrequent stays in jail, Gandhi had prepared a pair of sandals for Smuts, who recalled that there was no hatred and personal ill-feeling between them, and when the fight was over “there was the atmosphere in which a decent peace could be concluded.” As later events were to show, Gandhi’s work did not provide an enduring solution for the Indian problem in South Africa. What he did to South Africa was indeed less important than what South Africa did to him. It had not treated him kindly, but, by drawing him into the vortex of its racial problem, it had provided him with the ideal setting in which his peculiar talents could unfold themselves. The Religious Quest Gandhi’s religious quest dated back to his childhood, the influence of his mother, and of his home life in Porbandar and Rajkot, but it received a great impetus after his arrival in South Africa. His Quaker friends in Pretoria failed to convert him to Christianity, but they quickened his appetite for religious studies. He was fascinated by the writings of Leo Tolstoy on Christianity, read the Qurʾān in translation, and delved into Hindu scriptures and philosophy. The study of comparative religion talks with scholars, and his own reading of theological works brought him to the conclusion that all religions were true, and yet every one of them was imperfect because they were “interpreted with poor intellects, sometimes with poor hearts,
and more often misinterpreted.” Shrimad Rajchandra, a brilliant young Jain philosopher who became Gandhi’s spiritual mentor, convinced him of “the subtlety and profundity” of Hinduism, the religion of his birth. And it was the Bhagavadgita, which Gandhi had first read in London, that became his “spiritual dictionary” and exercised probably the greatest single influence on his life. Two Sanskrit words in the Gita particularly fascinated him. One was aparigraha (“nonpossession”), which implies that people have to jettison the material goods that cramp the life of the spirit and to shake off the bonds of money and property. The other was samabhava (“equability”), which enjoins people to remain unruffled by pain or pleasure, victory or defeat, and to work without hope of success or fear of failure. Those were not merely counsels of perfection. In the civil case that had taken him to South Africa in 1893, he had persuaded the antagonists to settle their differences out of court. The true function of a lawyer seemed to him “to unite parties riven asunder.” He soon regarded his clients not as purchasers of his services but as friends; they consulted him not only on legal issues but on such matters as the best way of weaning a baby or balancing the family budget. When an associate protested that clients came even on Sundays, Gandhi replied: “A man in distress cannot have Sunday rest.” Gandhi’s legal earnings reached a peak figure of £5,000 a year, but he had little interest in moneymaking, and his savings were often sunk in his public activities. In Durban and later in Johannesburg, he kept an open table; his house was a virtual hostel for younger colleagues and political coworkers. This was something of an ordeal for his wife, without whose extraordinary patience, endurance, and self-effacement Gandhi could hardly have devoted himself to public causes. As he broke through the conventional bonds of family and property, their life tended to shade into community life. Gandhi felt an irresistible attraction to a life of simplicity, manual labor, and austerity. In 1904—after reading John Ruskin’s Unto This Last, a critique of capitalism—he set up a farm in Phoenix near Durban where he and his friends could live by the sweat of their brow. Six years later another colony grew up under Gandhi’s fostering care near Johannesburg; it was named Tolstoy Farm for the Russian writer and moralist, whom Gandhi admired and corresponded with. Those two settlements were the precursors of the more-famous ashrams (religious retreats) in India, at Sabarmati near Ahmedabad (Ahmadabad) and at Sevagram near Wardha. South Africa had not only prompted Gandhi to evolve a novel technique for political action but also transformed him into a leader of men by freeing him from bonds that make cowards of most men. “Persons in power,” the British Classical scholar Gilbert Murray prophetically wrote about Gandhi in the Hibbert Journal in 1918; should be very careful how they deal with a man who cares nothing for sensual pleasure, nothing for riches, nothing for comfort or praise, or promotion, but is simply determined to do what he believes to be right. He is a dangerous and uncomfortable enemy because his body which you can always conquer gives you so little purchase upon his soul.

Biography of Mahatma Gandhi
Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. His father Karamchand Gandhi was the diwan of a small princely state in the British state of Katiyavada. His mother Potli Bai was the fourth wife of his father Karamchand Gandhi's first two wife. The girls died only after giving birth.
Any child born to a third wife should be new and hence Karamchand Gandhi married his fourth wife from Potli Bai. He had three sons and a daughter from the gene, Mohan Das Gandhi was the youngest, Gandhiji's mother was very religious and always busy in prayer and devotion. His mother had a great influence on Gandhiji, so he believed in vegetarian food and prayer, in 1874, Gandhiji's father was transferred to Rajkot.
Gandhiji started his studies from rajkot. He was an ordinary student in high school who spoke less and was not interested in the sports code and kept getting entangled with his books, so Gandhiji's elder brother got his friendship with a Sheikh Mahetal. To increase the length of Gandhiji, Gandhiji was advised to eat non-veg. One day, Mahetal was taken to his brothel, seeing the atmosphere there, Gandhiji went very far and he broke the friendship of Mahetal.
In 1883, at the age of thirteen years, Gandhiji's marriage to him was a joint event with Kasturbai Kapadia, a year older than him, his brothers also got married to him.Gandhiji's marriage meant playing new clothes, eating sweets and playing with relations. Because one year of studies has gone bad.
In 1885, Gandhiji's father was death, a few days after this, 16 years old Gandhi and 17 year old Kastur Bai give birth to their first child but that child died in a few days, due to two motos in the house, Gandhiji suffered a lot. In 1887, Gandhiji's father had gone from high school to Gandhiji, leaving behind him very little property.
Therefore Gandhiji took admission in Shamdas College, Bhavnagar for further studies. But he left the college in the middle and Porbandar came back to his family. A priest named Mavji Dave, who was one of Gandhiji's family friends, advised Gandhiji to go to London and complete his studies of Löw. In July 1888, Kastur Bai given birth to a boy named Harilal Gandhiji's mother of his wife. Except Gandhiji was not ready to go to London, Gandhiji's uncle also for not him to go to London, Gandhiji swore in front of his mother and wife that he should go to London and be non-alcoholic. Stay out of.
Gandhi's brother Laxman Das, who was already a lawyer, supported Gandhiji in going to London. On 4 September 1888, he boarded a ship from Mumbai and left for London, in London, he accepted the vegetarian association for vegetarian food and he was elected to his executive there. Those people who met the vegetarian people give Gandhiji Shri Mat Bhagwat inspired to study Gita.
When Gandhiji returned to India in June 1891, he came to know that his mother's specter was in London when he was there. His family hid this from him. Gandhiji started his advocacy business in Mumbai, but he could not speak anything till the cross exam, so he came to Rajkot and started writing the application for the needy people.
But he had to do this work due to an officer. In 1893, a South African company, Netal, who was the Isha of the state that day, went there to practice for a year. After coming to South Africa, he faced discrimination due to being an Indian.
While advocating, justice asked for the turban of his head as to why the right to walk on the footpath was only for the people, and due to walking on it, the British had to be beaten up so much that the new train had a first class ticket. Also, he was thrown out of the train for refusing to sit in his third class compartment. And the whole night trembling on railway tracks, kept thinking whether to go back to India or fight for their rights.
And he started fighting for his rights. Gandhiji returned to India in 1915.In 1918, Gandhiji started a movement against the British people. At that time, the British used to give very little profit to farmers against indigo farming, due to which the troubled Kishano sought the help of Gandhiji, which came in the metaphorical Ahinsha movement, in which Gandhiji won. In 1918, the British government given tax exemption to the teenager. Knowing that Bapu and Mahatma addressed him, in 1919, started the Roleact Act to stop revolutionaries.
According to which, without prosecuting any Indian, the government could have tied him up in jail. Gandhiji opposed it completely and started the peace supplement True planet agitation against it.
Gandhiji was arrested by the British government on 9 April. On 11 April 1919, a meeting was being held in Jallianwala Bagh to protest the Rowlact in which an Englishman went on a rampage in which 2000 people were killed and more than 400 people were killed. In December 1921, Gandhiji was made executive of the Indian National Congress. Officer was appointed.
Gandhiji started the non-cooperation movement. He appealed to the people that children should go to school. Government officials should work for the British. Citizens should not use tax-filled British goods and forged British clothes and manufacture Khadi from this movement. With this movement we got support from round to round participation in the society increased.
Then as soon as the agitation reached the end, in 1892 adopted the form of non-violence by the movement in Uttar Pradesh. Because of which Gandhiji withdrew the widespread unused movement. On 10 March 1892, Gandhiji was arrested on charges of sedition. In which, after sentencing him for 6 years, he was sent to jail. But after 2 years, he was released from jail.
On March 12, 1930, in protest against salt, a new True planet was launched, from March 12 to April 6, a 400-km journey from Ahmedabad to Tandi was taken out.So that salt can be produced. The number of Indians who participated in this journey towards the sea was the most successful movement to distract the British hold in India. In which the British tied more than 80,000 people in jail.In a speech in Mumbai in 1942, Gandhiji entered the Quit India Movement and told people not to sow the British in any way, but do not commit any kind of violence, it became the most powerful movement of Gandhi and Congress.
After a few lumps of Gandhiji's speech, he was arrested, Gandhiji was held captive in Angkha Khamokal, Pune for 2 years. This was the time when Gandhiji felt two deep strides in his personal life. His 50-year-old Sach Mahadev Desai died of a heart attack and his wife Kasturba Gandhi died on 22 February 1944 after Gandhiji spent 18 months in jail. After 6 weeks, Gandhiji had to suffer a severe malaria, due to his ill health, he was allowed before the inclusion of the war 6 May 1944, the British rule did not want to die in prison.
Te was so let soap Ath's une Indians to end the power of the country's anger was letting it touch the British end of the war should be increased as much signal. At this time Gandhiji tied up the movement, which nearly 1 lakh captive were released from Congress leaders.
In front of Gandhiji and all other revolutionaries, the British government knelt down and India became independent on 15 August 1947, but unfortunately India broke into two parts India and Pakistan on 30 January 1948 in New Delhi's Bithla Bhawan, Gandhiji's slaughtered by Nathuram Gudse. This was done, which created a ruckus in the country, but Gandhi left, but if he could kill Gandhi's thoughts, then this was the story of Mahatma Gandhi.

My childhood summer holidays! लहानपणीची उन्ह्याळ्याची सुट्टी
I will try to pen down the highlights of summer holidays I spent during 1960 to 1965 when I studied in standard 6 to 11 (SSC) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The schools would close for summer vacation around April 15 and reopen around June 15. In most summer vacations, our destination would be my mother’s native place Karad, about 100 miles South of Poona in Maharashtra. To maximize fun, we would leave on the last day of school exam and return only one week before school reopened.
Train journey from Ahmedabad to Karad would take app 20 hours, if non-stop and required change of trains at Bombay and Poona. Interestingly Ahmedabad to Bombay and Poona to Karad would be steam locos but Bombay to Poona would be electric locos. (even today it takes 20 hours, though we have no steam locos and no changeover at Poona). Except for the first leg, journeys would be in unreserved coaches and an adventure for a family-my mother and four children. The last leg from Karad railway station to residence of my maternal uncle would be by horse driven cart (टांगा). While writing this blog I am reminded of a marathi song popular then and now which goes as ”झुक झुक झुक झुक अगीनगाडी.........मामाच्या गावाला जाऊया” For non-Marathi readers, it means let us go to the village of our uncle (mama) by the steam engine driven train.
The residence of my maternal uncles was a palatial ancestral house, called Wada in Marathi and Haveli in Hindi. It was a two storied house with all main load bearing members of wood. The floors were wooden covered by mud and the walls were mainly of mud bricks, app 4 feet wide. All the bathrooms used the stones from the hills. The house was located on a hillock, near the confluence (Sangam) of rivers, Krishna and Koyana. The carpet area was more than 10000 sq ft and the open space around it would be easily another 30,000 sq ft. The premises had more than 25 trees and a Datta temple. There was cattle shed for bullocks and buffaloes. It had electricity only for lights and there were no ceiling fans. The ceiling was more than 20 ft high and kept inside cool.
In the summer vacation, our other cousins and aunts would also come to Karad from Poona and Dombivali. Sometimes we would be around 25 kids and 15 adults in the house. The logistics of managing the household work including cooking was a herculean task and well managed by the ladies. We had limited domestic help -part time help for cleaning utensils and washing clothes, and one full time servant, who would help the ladies. He would also care for the cattle.
Our day would start normally with going to the river for a bath and /or swim. I learnt swimming in the river from my uncles, who were expert swimmers. In about 3 yrs, I mastered the art of swimming in the river and was able to cross the river spanning more than 500 ft without any help of inflated tube or drum or another swimmer.
The major time pass activities were playing carom and cards in the temple, which was a cool place in the afternoon. Sometimes we would play tennis ball cricket in the evenings or mornings. We also played matches with the local boys for fun -home team vs visitors.
Sometimes we went to my (junior) uncle’s school and played badminton and table tennis. Actually, I learnt how to play these games there and then slowly got the hang of it.
My junior uncle was a very skilled person in addition to being a good teacher of mathematics /science and sport/physical training. He had studied agriculture and was in charge of the family farms. Those days the main crops were Jawar, ground nut and sugarcane. Farming was contracted out then. Once in the summer, we all would go to the farm, which was about 10 miles, using bullock cart and tractor etc. The farm had a team of contractors to make Gul/Gud (jaggery) from sugarcane juice. We enjoyed the fresh sugar cane juice, adding lemon and ginger taken from home. It was a full day picnic. Even today we get our annual stock of Gul/Gud from Karad.
We had some outings during our holidays. The regular visit to Ogale Glass Works, Ogalewadi, near Karad railway station was looked forward with keen interest. We could visit the plant and see the glass bottles, containers etc being made by manually blowing the molten glass. I think it was a rare industrial township by a Marathi industrialist. Another attraction was a sumptuous meal at my grandaunt, who lived in a staff quarter.
We also were able to visit the Koyana dam and Pofali power station when they were being constructed. One of my uncles in PWD was posted at Koyana dam site and he took us around the construction site. Another relative was the chief engineer at Indian Hume Pipe, who were constructing the electric generating room inside a mountain. The dam water would be brought by a tunnel in the mountain, and it would drop more than 1000 ft to generate power. The machinery was from Switzerland. We were taken to the machinery installation room from the tunnel, which would allow water to go out after turbine. It was very educating to see such construction at a young age.
I had not seen any Marathi play in Ahmedabad but during the summer holidays an amateur group would stage famous Marathi plays in the open area on a makeshift stage in the town square free for all. My senior uncle (a bank manager) and aunt (a school teacher) were highly active and used to play the lead roles. I remember to have seen “दुरितांचे तिमिर जाओ (Duritanche Timir Javo)” in one summer starting from rehearsals till final performance. A great learning experience.
I was exposed to some other activities where I picked up some skills. My junior uncle and we boys replaced a mud brick wall with new bricks and cement mortar. I was able to “drive” a bullock cart after riding with the “driver” for a couple of days. I was gifted a Afga box camera in one summer. My uncle’s friend, who owned a photo studio, taught me how to take a good photo. My junior uncle owned an ex-army BSA make motorcycle of 500 cc (like one we see in WWII movies). He taught me how to ride once I was able to handle the weight. I rode it, with my uncle on the pillion seat, to nearby villages on the tar and dirt roads.
We boys did help in fetching water from the only tap in the front of the residence to kitchen and bathrooms. I also helped and learnt how to stitch on a paddle sewing machine from my aunt. When old enough, I helped my uncle in correcting annual exam answer sheets of his school and compiling the marks sheets.
Towards end of the holidays, the school results would pour in and we would celebrate the achievements. Our favourite was to make pot ice cream at home and enjoy almost unlimited scoops. My uncle and we boys would take turn to churn the pot in the wooden drum (vat). Another way to celebrate was to go to see a Hindi (then it was not Bollywood) movie in one of three movie halls.
Towards the end of holidays, my father would join us, and we would go to Sangli, his native place. For me, Sangli meant that I could spend hours watching two elephants in their shed in Ganesh temple. I also recall that we used to go to Sangli railway station in the evening to watch the turning around of the steam loco as Sangli was dead end. A turn “table” was used to turn the loco by 180 degrees manually by two rail employees.
In all, it was a different world from the one in Ahmedabad and I picked up a lot of skills, knowledge and human values from these holidays. They are part of my body and soul even today.
The ancestral residential house was replaced about 25 yrs ago by standard concrete bungalow’s once the four brothers (uncles) divided the inheritance. Luckily the temple remains as it was.
Many readers, who grew up in cities, may not find the above of interest or difficult to appreciate the details. These are memories I would like to cherish.

India Heat Wave More Deadly Under Lockdown

India Heat Wave More Deadly Under Lockdown
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”26px”][vc_column_text]
Lowering risks from India heat wave may be difficult this year with most of the country’s 1.3 billion people forced to stay indoors.
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”26px”][vc_column_text]With little access to air conditioners or parks during the coronavirus lockdown, India’s poor – from farmers to slum-dwellers – could face deadly threats from heat waves this summer, climate and disaster management experts have warned.
Crippling heat waves, drought and water scarcity usually grip India during the summer months of May and June. Authorities regularly issue advisories on how to keep cool, including advice to drink water frequently, find shady spots and use fans.
But following that advice could be more difficult this year with most of the country’s 1.3 billion people trapped indoors as a result of a lockdown to try to stem spread of the coronavirus.
Conditions will be particularly harsh for the poor living in small, cramped homes with no air conditioners, little ventilation and irregular water and power supplies.
“Vulnerable communities are on the front lines of crises ranging from extreme heat (and) climate change to COVID-19,” said Anjali Jaiswal of the U.S.-based Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).
“The risks of extreme heat are deadly. Heat is not merely an inconvenience, it kills,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in emailed comments.
India’s virus lockdown – enforced beginning March 25 – quickly prompted tens of thousands of poor migrant workers to walk hundreds of miles back to their home villages in blazing heat, with scores falling ill or dying along the way.
The past decade has been India’s hottest on record, with extreme heat directly killing about 350 people last year, according to the national weather office.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”26px”][vc_single_image image=”21678″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][vc_empty_space height=”26px”][vc_column_text]Temperatures so far this year have hit 41 degrees Celsius (105 Fahrenheit) in New Delhi. Parts of the western desert state of Rajasthan have recorded temperatures of nearly 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) in recent weeks.
Overall, the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted a warmer-than-usual summer between April and June.
The forecast prompted the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) last month to issue special advice for dealing with heat waves during the lockdown.
It created lists of guidelines for workers ranging from vegetable vendors to farm and construction labourers, police and traffic officers.
For example, it advised employers to schedule strenuous jobs at cooler times of the day, and to increase the frequency and duration of rest breaks for outdoor work – all while employees wear masks and maintain social distancing.
Anup Kumar Srivastava, a drought and heat wave expert at the NDMA, said the agency was working not only to contain COVID-19, but also to save people from the “increasing intensity and severity of heat waves”.
High temperatures can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and worsen chronic cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
He said people who suffer such heat-related illnesses could be a challenge for overstretched hospitals already “struggling to cope” with more than 67,000 coronavirus infections.
Srivastava urged states to launch COVID-19 specific heat action plans to “reduce the adverse effects of heat waves”.
“Since the majority of the people will be staying at home due to lockdown, ensuring power and water supply during peak heat days will be the priority,” he said.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”26px”][vc_single_image image=”21676″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][vc_empty_space height=”26px”][vc_column_text]
Huge parts of India already endure a scorching, sometimes deadly, summer, and climate experts say the country is particularly at risk as global heat records are set year after year.
As extreme heat and humidity increase across the globe, they threaten economies and millions of lives in places where it could become fatal to work outdoors, in some cases by 2060, scientists said in a study published last week.
India already recorded over 2,000 deaths during a 2015 heat wave. A similar one in the western city of Ahmedabad in 2010 killed more than 1,300 and prompted the creation of South Asia’s first heat action plan in 2013.
That plan included early warning text messages to mobile phones, use of public temperature displays and things like broader use of “cool roofs” with reflective surfaces or coatings to reduce temperatures in low-income and informal housing.
Since its launch, the plan has helped prevent an estimated 1,100 deaths each year in Ahmedabad, according to a study published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health in 2018.
More than 20 of India’s 29 states, including eastern Odisha and Bihar, and 100 cities now have or are in the process of enforcing such plans, according to the NRDC, which helped develop the pioneering effort in Ahmedabad.
Cities often face the worst temperatures as heat is reflected off paved surfaces, and because of a lack of trees in some areas, climate experts say. To beat furnace-like conditions, many people seek respite in air-conditioned public buildings, shops and malls, temples, parks, gardens or under trees – areas known as “cooling spaces” in the heat action plans. But this year many people will not have access to those spaces, experts warn. Instead they will need simply to drink plenty of water, wear light clothing and stay indoors, said Jaiswal of the NRDC.
Shloka Nath, head of sustainability at Mumbai-based charitable foundation Tata Trusts, said cities need to invest in everything from more cool, green roofs to better ventilation in low-cost housing to deal with growing long-term heat risks.
“Longer, hotter and deadlier summers are poised to become the norm due to climate change,” she said. “Given the current COVID-19 crisis … reducing heat-related exposure is key.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column fade_animation_offset=”45px” width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space height=”26px”][vc_widget_sidebar sidebar_id=”footer-3″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px” content_text_aligment=”” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no”][vc_column fade_animation_offset=”45px”][vc_empty_space height=”26px”][vc_column_text]News: Thomson Reuters Editing by Laurie Goering Main image: Yogendra Singh[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Coronavirus Lockdown 2.0: Focus on both life, livelihood

Coronavirus Lockdown 2.0: Focus on both life, livelihood
Tumblr media
New Delhi: India’s urban centres will see an extension of the lockdown at least until the end of the month but the government also wants to ensure that the engines of the economy start turning—by making exemptions for agriculture, factories and the transport of goods.
The next phase of the lockdown starting April 15 is expected to ensure that harvests and procurement of produce take place without any hindrance, said people with knowledge of the matter. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is said to have suggested a “lock-in” for factories with workers staying onsite and maintaining social distancing. The Centre is contemplating measures to bring migrant workers from camps to their factories, possibly by running special buses or trains.
Cargo movement of all kinds of goods will be allowed across the country, as will fishing.
Tumblr media
States’ Revenues Plunge 50-75% The distinction between transport of essential and non-essential goods that’s causing confusion on the ground will be done away with. Industries will be opened “subject to public health concerns,” said the people cited above.
This is expected to get the economy moving while strict restrictions remain in place in large urban areas such as Delhi and Mumbai for the general public. The current three-week lockdown is scheduled to end on April 14 and an announcement about what shape it will take after that is expected soon.
“The form of the lockdown from April 15 will be different. Activity in some areas will be relaxed,” Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said on Sunday. The “nearunanimous view” at the Prime Minister’s meeting with chief ministers on Saturday was that lifting the lockdown was not feasible given the rising number of infections cases and deaths, he said. More than 360 districts in the country have people with coronavirus infections, up significantly from the previous week.
Amid falling revenues and funds drying up, states face a tough balancing act between saving lives and reviving the economy, officials said. Madhya Pradesh, for example, hasn’t paid inflation-linked dearness allowance to its employees. Others have deferred pay. Chief ministers told the PM that revenue has dropped 50-75% over the past month.
Six opposition-ruled states–Delhi, Maharashtra, Telangana, West Bengal, Punjab and Odisha-–have already announced lockdown extension until the end of April. All the BJP-ruled states are also in agreement with extending the lockdown but have left it to the Centre to decide on the matter, senior central government officials told ET. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has formed a committee to look at ways in which development work can resume while social distancing norms are followed. Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have told the Prime Minister that states should be allowed to decide the parameters of any relaxation.
Tumblr media
A key theme that has emerged is restarting industry while observing a lockdown for the general public, officials said. This involves identifying industries that can house their workers until the end of April, through what the PM termed in the Saturday meeting as a “lock-in” strategy.
Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal said the state has divided regions into red, orange and green zones depending upon the number of cases. This will determine the extent of the relaxation. The economic hub of Gurgaon is among those in the red zone, which means that maximum containment will remain in place in the district.
Farming and harvesting will continue in all zones with produce being procured from the doorstep of farmers and free movement for the transport of crops. The marine and aquaculture sector will be exempted. The Centre told all states on Sunday to allow movement of goods of all kinds and said godowns and cold storages can store any item.
Major metros and state capitals such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Indore, Gurgaon, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Bengaluru, which have seen a high number of cases, are unlikely to see any major relaxations.
“Mumbai and Delhi are now reporting the highest number of infected cases… Both metros are under heavy containment. Pune is also a major worry,” a senior central government official said when asked if any relaxation will be allowed in the three cities. Ahmedabad and the Madhya Pradesh financial hub of Indore are also seen as hot spots.
The resurgence of coronavirus cases in China, Japan and South Korea is a cause of concern for India, said Lav Agarwal, joint secretary in the health ministry, at the daily briefing on Sunday.
“We have to ensure our social distancing and containment measures are there as any relaxation in the same can reduce our effect and output,” Agarwal said.
This government is considering insurance cover for agricultural workers, truck drivers transporting cargo and those employed in essential industries, said the people cited above.

India’s workforce expansion, economic transition and urbanisation as well as migration from different parts of India will boost investment opportunities in the next coming years leading to growth in housing, office, retail and warehouse space says property consultant CREDAI and CBRE reports. According to reports, the real estate sector would expand tremendously by 2030. The report estimated for office space stock will touch one billion sq ft by 2030, with flexible workspace accounting for 8-10 per cent of the total stock. The retail shopping centre stock is estimated to cross 120 million sq ft by 2030, while warehousing stock could touch 500 million sq ft by then.
By 2030, residential real estate has the potential to almost double from the current stock of 1.5 million units in key cities, the report said. "As the Indian economy transitions and its workforce expands, it will offer vast development and investment opportunities for the real estate sector," CREDAI-CBRE report said. The growth of cities is going to further influence the country's built environment, while technology, demographics and environmental issues will become the new value drivers.
What is a Property Tax?
Every property is an asset which is taxable and the amount which is paid by the owner of the property to the government annually is known as the property tax. The tax can be paid to the state government or the Municipal Corporation, depending on the government policies. The word “property” in this context refers to all tangible real estate under the ownership of an individual which includes houses, commercial spaces and rented spaces to a third party.
The concept of property tax is been found around for centuries and is accepted across the globe, with proper records of farmers and workers paying tax on their properties even in the middle ages.
The given below is the formula used by the Municipal Corporation of India to calculate the property tax of an individual.
Property tax = base value × built-up area × Age factor × type of building × category of use × floor factor.
Different civic corporations use different methods to calculate tax, but the general overview of such calculations remains the same.
Property tax in India depends on the location of the property, with taxes varying from state to state.
The first assessment is carried by finding the occupancy status whether it is self-occupied or rented out, type of property (residential or commercial), amenities provided (car parking, rainwater harvesting, store, etc.), year of construction (single floored or kutcha structure etc), and the carpet area of the property.
After getting the necessary details the civic agencies use the formula to calculate the tax.
The property tax can also be calculated online. Just visit the municipal corporation website and have a search for Property Tax Calculator.
How to find the real home value?
Start with online valuation tools
The information provided by you will be used along with the information gleaned from public records to get the estimated value of the property. It is a simple and convenient way to get a crystal clear idea of what your home might be worth.
Work with a realtor.
      -      Realtors use their own techniques for determining the value and it can be helpful to get a second opinion. The process used by realtors is known as Comparative  Market Analysis (CMA).
      -     Working on with CMA, realtors usually look for the recently sold homes that are similar in size, location, no of bedrooms, location and in design.
      -      Broker Price Opinion (BPO) is another tool to determine your home value.
      -      BPOs are often used more than CMA for short sale or foreclosure situation rather than regular home sales. BPOs costs money.
      -      Keeping in mind that CMA or a BPO still miss the mark because of the untaken feature that affects the property value.
 Hiring a professional appraiser
The job of the appraiser is to provide an impartial, thoroughly researched estimate of a home’s value. They get the details by visiting the property and reviewing the recently sold or pending sales comps.
If you are planning to hire an appraiser, do note down what report will be provided by the results of the appraiser.
On a point, the appraiser uses a checklist named “Fannie Mae’s Uniform Residential Appraisal Report”, this checklist is verified by the appraiser to check whether the conditions are met or not.
An appraiser should look for the following details
 Location of the home.
Whether the home is in the FEMA flood zone.
Condition of the utility service and fixture on the property.
Details of when the home was built.
On what type of foundation it was built.
Conditions of the attic and basement, heating and air system, walls, windows and doors.
Looking out for amenities.
Any additional repairs and improvements are needed.
Condition of appliances in the home.
Finding out any sign of damage that would compromise the structural soundness of the home.
Analyzing your own comps.
we can also compare our house using some factors to a similar one selling in our area.
Structural components and features.
Size and age of your property.
Sales history if any
Any improvement or construction.
Overall condition of the home.
Neighbourhood and location
Listing price vs Actual sale price.
Impact of GST on the Real Estate sector.
Indian economy is established by many industries working to make the economy strong and real estate industry is one of it. In present real estate industry contributes 6-8% of GDP and it is assumed that it will grow up to 13% by 2030.
At the recent GST council meeting held on 24th of February 2019, new GST rates have been introduced for residential real estate that will be applicable from 1st of April 2019. During the pre-GST era of taxation, multiple taxes were applicable such as VAT, stamp duty, registration charges and services charges that varied among different states with different charges. GST has played a significant role in simplifying the rates of taxation in the real estate sector that ranges from 5% - 18% depending upon some key factor.
New rates were applicable for GST in the Real Estate Sector.
Types of Real estate property.                                         Rates after GST
Residential Property (affordable housing segment)
8% with Input Tax Credit (ITC)
1% without ITC
Residential Property (non-affordable housing segment)
12% with ITC
5% without ITC
Commercial Properties
12% with ITC
12% with ITC (unchanged)
After the GST implementation on real estate in 2017, the industry was in assuming a dropping posture. However, in early 2018, there was an increase in demand and supply for real estate.
The growth was increased in affordable mid-income housing. The rates for the sales property witnessed an increase while in larger cities such as Delhi has a 2% decline in property sales, not because of GST but of oversupply of the housing sector. As on a note 2019 promises to be a better year for Indian Real Estate as the demand for both commercial and residential properties is expected to get a boost.
