This 1967 Chevy C10 Is Smokin’

The road to becoming a classic truck enthusiast comes from many different directions. A lot of the truck owners we write about in these pages started the trip with a love for muscle cars. Angelo Vespi, owner of this wild 1967 Chevrolet C10, is one of those guys.

Angelo says that he can’t remember a time in his life when he didn’t have an interest in performance cars. As usual, his interest is accompanied by some memorable experiences. A lot of Angelo’s fondest memories from his formative years include a 1989 Mustang GT, owned by his brother. “I can remember driving around in that car, and the fun we had in it,” he told us. “To this day, I’m still surprised I’m alive to tell about it!”

The adventures in his brother’s Mustang eventually led to more fun in cool cars of his own. Those have included a 2009 Dodge Challenger, a 2010 Chevy Camaro, a 2014 Shelby GT500, and a few late-model Corvettes. It’s not surprising that Angelo’s taste would carry him back in time to the muscle car era. In 2014, his satin white 1969 Camaro with an 803hp supercharged LSX won the SEMA Battle of the Builders competition for Detroit Speed.

“After my Camaro won at SEMA, it wasn’t very long before I started to get the itch again,” said Angelo. “This time I wanted a truck” He loved the styling of 1967 Chevy shortbeds, and when he found one for sale near his home in St. Augustine, Florida, he was quick to move on it. The truck started and moved under its own power, but was in rough condition. After disassembly, it went to the media blaster. As multiple previous paintjobs were stripped away, the extent of the rust—and the extent of the work necessary to rebuild the C10—was revealed.

As a fabricator at Detroit Speed, Aaron Elenbaum had been one of the people responsible for the success of Vespi’s Camaro. Elenbaum now runs his own shop, Ambition Road, in Mooresville, North Carolina, and worked with Angelo to turn the rough and rusty C10 into what you see here.

The original plan was for something on the mild side. “I told myself not to go as crazy as I did with my Camaro, but that idea quickly went out the window,” Angelo admits. “Aaron is like an artist when it comes to fabrication and so I just let him run with it. My only rule was to try to keep the overall feel of the truck.”

Bodywork went a little further than repairing the rust, but everything is subtle. A fabricated waterjet cut honeycomb grille insert was added between Philips LED headlights. Bumpers were smoothed and tucked. Moving down the sides, 1969 C10 mirrors were installed and driprails were tucked into the top. Door locks were shaved and the factory handles were replaced with new pieces from GSI Machine & Fabrication. The bed panels were extended to flow into the rear bumper. The bedrails were modified and stake pockets filled. The bed floor, built from dark stained oak, was raised 3 1/2 inches to clear the rear suspension, with widened tubs to fit the fat rear tires; a custom aluminum bed cover protects it from the elements. The Marquez LED taillights are impossible to miss on the road.

Picking the right paint was a challenge, according to Angelo. Flashy wouldn’t fit the truck’s character, but Smokey Blue and Candy White perfectly does. Dutchboys Hotrods in Kalamazoo, Michigan, shot the PPG paint. Instead of brightening the bumpers, custom aluminum trim, and other components in shiny chrome, Advanced Plating used Transparent Smoke powdercoating on the brushed pieces for a toned-down finish. Smoke tint windows from Sanders Repro Glass complete the look.

The trim color was based on the smoked titanium finish of the aggressive-looking Night Train wheels from Rushforth Wheels. Michelin Pilot Sport performance tires, measuring 335/30ZR20 and 275/35ZR19, were selected to wrap the 20×12 and 19×10 rims.

Hundreds of holes in the Chevy frame were welded and smoothed. The ’rails were boxed for extra strength and notched in the front and rear to provide the desired ride height. Ambition Road used Roadster Shop REVO front and rear Chevy truck suspension components to upgrade the chassis, along with AFCO coilovers, to smooth out the ride. All four wheels are slowed by 14-inch Baer disc brakes with six-piston calipers. Angelo must be happy with the Magnuson-supercharged LS engine in his Camaro because his C10 is packed with a similar setup. This time it’s a Chevrolet Performance 525hp LS3 topped with a Magnuson TVS2300 bl ower. On the chassis dyno, the rear-wheel horses’ reading reached 533. On the street, the engine is equipped with a Vintage Air FrontRunner drive system, stainless headers and exhaust pipes, and Borla stainless mufflers. A Bowler Performance 4L80E transmission is joined to the 3.70:1-geared Ford 9-inch by a Dynotech driveshaft.

At M&M Hot Rod Interiors in Holly Pond, Alabama, the bench seat was rebuilt on the stock C10 frame, and then covered with textured Relicate leather. The door panels were upholstered to match, using light brown leather and replacement handles from Clayton Machine Works. The original dash was mildly modified by Ambition Road, and a custom insert was created to house New Vintage USA gauges from the muscle car–era inspired 1969 Series. The steering wheel is a Budnik G10. Topping it all off is a Kenwood audio system and air conditioning from Vintage Air.

Elenbaum and the team at Ambition Road finished Angelo Vespi’s beautiful 1967 C10 in a quick 10 months. At the 2016 Goodguys PPG Nationals in Columbus, the truck scooped up a Builder’s Choice award. Since then, it has shown up at several other shows, including SEMA, and is currently a finalist for the Goodguys 2017 LMC Truck of the Year-Late award, to be determined later this year. Not bad for a truck project that started out mild.
