It goes without saying that the ongoing lockdown has dealt a severe blow to Bollywood’s business. And with no clarity in sight about theatres re-opening in the near future, it seems Hindi film-makers have started to consider releasing their relatively smaller movies directly on OTT platforms. In fact, the first ones off the hook – officially-speaking – are Shoojit Sircar-directed Gulabo Sitabo, Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer Ghoomketu and Vidya Balan-starrer Shakuntala Devi.

Not just that, there have been talks that a number of other films such as Laxmmi Bomb, Jhund, Ludo, Khaali Peeli, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Shershaah and Roohi Afzana among others may also go the OTT way. Apparently, Ali Abbas Zafar’s superhero film starring Katrina Kaif, to be made in two parts, has also been acquired by an OTT platform.

Trade expert, Taran Adarsh feels the “industry is divided on this [Gulabo Sitabo being the first Hindi film to officially go on an OTT platform] as exhibitor-theatre owners may not like it.” He adds: “I understand that the producers may be feeling the pinch vis-à-vis their investments but theatres will eventually open soon and they would also need content to run.”

For producer Bhushan Kumar, it’s a “very tricky question.” “See, OTTs may be a viable option for smaller films but big-budget, tent-pole movies can’t do their entire recovery [of budgets] just from OTT platforms. For them, the theatrical business will be absolutely critical,” he says.

For the uninitiated, theatres have been shut since March and there have been no talks about them reopening anytime soon. Exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi feels that a producer is “totally free to take a call, which is in his best interest”. “That way, exhibitors-distributors are also free to do that. Maybe, from now, we will judicious about giving certain amount of screen space to certain kind of films, which may be more suited to OTTs,” he says.

Rathi wants a “partnership in truest sense” with makers as “we are all in it together.” “The question isn’t about the next two quarters but of the coming 20 years’ relationship. You need to be a visionary and not trader at this point. Producers and exhibitors-distributors are two intrinsic parts of value chain, and we need to work in tandem,” he says.

Actors’ talk!

Actors, on their part, feel “makers know and will do what’s best for their films.” As Kiara Advani, who stars in Laxmmi Bomb and Shershaah, puts it: “There are certain films, which are meant for only a cinematic experience, while others can go on OTTs.” On the other hand, Kriti admits she will be “sad” if her new film, Mimi were to release on OTT. “We are all watching stuff on OTT platforms [during lockdown]. But I feel it’s still doesn’t reach the masses but I want Mimi to reach the masses. And it’s also a beautiful film,” she said in an interview.

Even as the restrictions are slowly being lifted, it’s uncertain when the theatres will reopen and whether the audience will head to the cinema halls. Producers are opting for direct-to-OTT options in order to not suffer more losses.

It was already rumoured that after several movies like Gulabo Sitabo and Shakuntala Devi took the OTT route, many projects will be making it to the digital platforms. Now, as per recent development, sources reveal that Disney + Hotstar will premiere ten films on their platform including two of the highly awaited movies – Akshay Kumar’s Laxmmi Bomb and Ajay Devgn starrer Bhuj: The Pride Of India.

LAXMMI BOMB:

The film stars Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani in the leading roles. The upcoming horror thriller is written and directed by Raghava Lawrence as this film marks his Hindi directorial debut. Akshay plays the role of a transgender. It is a remake of the Tamil movie Muni 2: Kanchana.

BHUJ: THE PRIDE OF INDIA:

Ajay Devgn stars as IAF Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik. The story is set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, where Karbnik was then in-charge of the Bhuj airport who and his team reconstructed the IAF airbase with the help of 300 local women. Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Nora Fatehi, Sharad Kelkar, Ammy Virk and Pranitha Subhash are starring in key roles. It is being co-produced, written and directed by Abhishek Dudhaiya.

The film marks the return of Mahesh Bhatt as a director after his 1991 film, Sadak. The sequel will bring back the original actors Pooja Bhatt and Sanjay Dutt along with new pair Alia Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapur. This is also the first time Alia is working with her father since her launch in Student Of The Year.

Produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films in association with Jio Studios, Mimi is based on Marathi film Mala Aai Vhaaychay which won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi in 2011. Lockdown has hit the Bollywood badly. With all the shootings stopped, projects are left in hanging, and the releases also have been postponed. But some of the producers who cannot hold on to their releases due to financial issues have opted for OTT release. Janhvi Kapoor & Ananya Panday’s OTT Releases

Janhvi Kapoor debuted with Dhadak opposite Ishaan Khattar almost three years ago. Since then she had no other release in the theatre even though she was a part of the Dharma Productions Ghost Series. That is why for Janhvi movies like Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl and Roohi Afzana were very important. Since these two movies are heroine-centric they gave ample opportunity to showcase her talent in strong roles. But now with Gunjan Saxena poised for OTT release on Netflix and Roohi Afzana the following suit after some time, it is a major setback for Boney Kapoor’s girl because OTT releases do not establish star power.

Moreover these were supposed to be major releases for Janhvi after Dhadak and with their success, her career would have escalated to new heights. Speaking about the film, she reportedly said that she feels like ‘Gunjan Saxena’ is her first film as the jitters she had during her debut film has reappeared. She also added that this is also because the level of investment in the film is abnormally high as she got on board at such a nascent stage. Elaborating further, she added that after working with experienced filmmakers like Shashank Khaitan and Zoya Akhtar, working with a debut director’s vision was a refreshing experience. The sequel to the 2013 hit film Go Goa Gone was announced recently by Eros international and Maddock films. The film follows the story of three friends who head to Goa for a trip. One fine day when they wake up in the morning after attending a rave party the previous night, they find themself in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. They befriend Borris, a Russian mafioso who saves them from the Zombies.

Speaking to a news agency, producer Dinesh Vijan said that the team of Roohi Afzana is writing the sequel. He said that they need to give every actor from the first part a little more like a 2.0 version and bring something new.

Dostana 2 is the sequel to the 2007 film starring Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham, and Abhishek Bachchan.  When asked if she has any fears about Dostana 2 getting compared with the first installment, she said that Dostana became a cult classic and she hopes that she and her team matches to that standard. The actress also stressed that the story, characters, and sets are completely different than the original movie and added how part 2 is a little more emotional.

Janhvi Kapoor will also be seen in Roohi Afzana and Gunjan Saxena this year and in Takht next year. Talking about Roohi Afzana she said that it was the most emotionally and physically taxing role that she has had the privilege of doing. She also revealed that she has started her prep for Takht as well. She has started learning Kathak and Urdu as well and added how she has been fascinated by the era.

BHUJ: THE PRIDE OF INDIA:

Ajay Devgn stars as IAF Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik. The story is set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, where Karbnik was then in-charge of the Bhuj airport who and his team reconstructed the IAF airbase with the help of 300 local women. The film marks the return of Mahesh Bhatt as a director after his 1991 film, Sadak. The sequel will bring back the original actors Pooja Bhatt and Sanjay Dutt along with new pair Alia Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapur. This is also the first time Alia is working with her father since her launch in Student Of The Year.

Produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films in association with Jio Studios, Mimi is based on Marathi film Mala Aai Vhaaychay which won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi in 2011. Another situational comedy is in the making from producer Dinesh Vijan. Bareilly Ki Barfi duo Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Sanon will be reuniting for an interesting comedy in which they are orphans and plan to adopt parents. The role of the parents will be essayed by National Award winners Paresh Rawal and Dimple Kapadia.

The plot revolves around this young couple who bring an older couple home but how they disturb their lives and almost destroy their marriage. The film will mark the debut of Gujarati filmmaker Abhishek Bachchan who has assisted Ram Madhvani in ad campaigns, Subhash Ghai and worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Chenab Gandhi and Guzaarish.

The plan is to take the film on the floor by the mid of March in Delhi. The makers are looking at the year-end release of the untitled comedy.

Rajkummar Rao already has two projects coming up this year - Chhalaang and Roohi Afzana. Kriti Sanon is currently shooting for Mimi followed by Bachchan Pandey.

Shah Rukh Khan is yet to announce his next film but has been working behind the scenes as a producer. Last year, he produced Badla starring Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu followed by Netflix series Bard Of Blood featuring Emraan Hashmi. Kickstarting the year with another film, SRK is set to back Sanjay Mishra starrer Kaamyaab.

The film revolves around the story of character actors and their struggles. It will also star Deepak Dobriyal and Sarika Singh. The makers thought Sanjay Mishra was the right fit since his career graph mirrors the storyline of the character. Hardik Mehta will direct the project.

Hardik Mehta, meanwhile, is also directing Roohi Afzana starring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor.
