It actually makes me so sad to see Neve in black or dark colors. I feel like her white/teal theme is so indicative of how she wants to be seen. She wants people to know she's around and there to help. I think it always shows that she isn't a grimdark detective who is actually depressed and angry. She has so so much hope and the brightness shows that.

Head empty except for one braincell pinging around imagining these two solving crimes together and my desperate Rook following behind them horny as fuck for their hypercompetency and incomparable fashion sense.

What If Neve Had More Romance Banter Between Her, Lucanis and Rook?
❄️Neve: You two are such saps.
🙂Rook: Pardon me?
❄️Neve: The stolen glances when you think no one is looking.
🐦‍⬛Lucanis: This is embarrassing.
❄️Neve: (smiles) I always notice the small details. It's my job.
🐦‍⬛Lucanis: I look at everyone Neve.
❄️Neve: Not the way you look at Rook. All sweet and doe-eyed.
🙂Rook: (laughs)
❄️Neve: (looks at Rook) You're just as bad. Twice as obvious.
🙂Rook: Hey!
🐦‍⬛Lucanis: Assassination confirmed.

Okay so if anyone in Veilguard figured out what was going on with Rook and Varric, it had to be Neve, right?
More below the cut because spoilers
She’s from Minrathous, so she knows blood magic in action even if she doesn’t touch it herself, she knew Varric in person before all this happened, and she’s a good enough detective to suss out that Emmrich was born poor from candle stubs and meal times, she’s absolutely going to put the pieces together.
And you might be going, “well why didn’t she say anything?” And narratively, because that’s the big act 3 twist, right? That’s the needle that Solas needs to really stitch Rook into the Fade Prison in his place, so we can’t have one of your party members wandering around Arlathan going BTW Varric is dead.
But I can’t stop thinking about this in-story. What if the team didn’t bring it up to Rook because they can’t? Or at least, not in a way that sticks.
Like, maybe at the beginning Neve and Harding thought this might be a temporary block, right? Sure, they realize right after the prologue and Rook’s first dialogue with Solas that 1) Solas is in Rook’s head and 2) there was enough blood at the ritual site that Solas could, if he chose to, do blood magic about it.
But also, Rook did end up taking a trip to Massive Head Trauma Bay, right? Maybe this isn’t magical, maybe this is just a bog standard head wound and while they don’t remember Varric dying right now, maybe things will clear up as time goes on. Harding’s holding on to hope harder than Neve is for this- Neve’s a trained cynic, but Harding keeps thinking maybe when we go retrieve the dagger from the ritual site, that will jog some memories, maybe if I keep talking about Varric, maybe maybe maybe
But every time Harding shares a story, makes a comment, outright refers to Varrics death, it just slides off of Rook’s brain like egg off teflon. Rook is confused, upset, but with no reason why as far as they understand.
Harding’s not having the easiest time dealing with that, either, because in a normal grieving situation she’d be talking with Rook all the time about Varric; what he’d be saying about everyone who joins the party, what he’d be complaining about, breaking out the Varricisms that he’d pop off with while they were all travelling together; and Neve is nice, Neve is fine, but she wasn’t travelling with Varric like Harding and Rook were, it’s not the same commiserating, and everyone who joins knows Varric only in the past tense. You can write to your Ma and you can write to Charter, but it’s not the same as talking to someone.
Bellara broaches the idea with Neve about trying to un-block Rook’s brain, but she’s shot down almost immediately for a handful of reasons. First, trying to un-block Rook’s brain has a very real chance of simply scrambling Rook’s brain beyond comprehension. Dealing with blood magic on the level that Solas has apparently performed it is *really* tricky per what we see in the universe- I think the closest we come previously is in Dorian’s backstory with his father trying to Magical Conversion Therapy Dorian, and iirc there’s a fairly high chance that could have just straight up lobotomized him; how much more complicated must ‘just ignore this one fact and anything that contradicts it’ be to magically install in someone’s brain? Second, as much as they all may not be comfortable with the idea, they are in a position where they need Solas to keep talking to Rook in order to keep moving forward against the Evanuris, and if they fuck with the blood magic in Rook’s brain, they also may lose that link with Solas.
When you’re dealing with someone with long term memory loss- Alzheimer’s patients, for example- it eventually becomes kinder to accommodate their understanding of the world where you can rather than try and impress the real truth around them. Your husband is at work, or the grocery store, your husband isn’t dead, because every time you try and tell them that their husband is dead, they’re very upset and confused and they don’t remember WHY they’re upset and confused minutes later, but the upset and confusion are real regardless. So Neve and Harding have a quiet conversation with everyone that joins, letting them know ‘hey, just don’t talk about this one subject around Rook.’
As the game progresses, the Varric Issue becomes less of an issue for the team because other things force their way to the forefront. Treviso happens, or Minrathous happens. Weisshaupt happens. Aelia happens, and Cyrian happens, and Johanna Hezenkoss happens, and so talking around the Varric Issue becomes less of a problem for everyone -
Until Tearstone Island happens.
