Matt looks at the table in interest and asks Andrew as he wraps a BP cuff around his arm, “You’re working with Shepherd for the research contest?”

“Yeah, she asked me to assist and I said yes right off the bat.”

“You know when I first heard about this contest, I wondered why I didn’t get into surgery and I remembered it’s not my fancy.” Matt says enviously as Andrew pumps the cuff.

“Personality thing?” Andrew asks.

“Nah I grew up watching House MD and I wanted to be that growing up.” Andrew grins at that reference, “I mean except for the painful limp, the opioid addiction and being an antisocial ass. What about you? Did you watch any medical dramas that got you hooked?”

“Not really.” Andrew records the BP and takes the cuff off, “I come from a family of surgeons so it was kind of in my blood. We made fun of those shows and pointed out the inaccuracies. BP is normal.”

“And did you have any headaches or was anything out of the ordinary before the spells?”

“Nope nothing. I’m a medical mystery, this is not how I wanted to relive an episode of House.” Andrew grins at that, “You know I’ve known Amber for a long time now and I can tell she likes you; I’m talking like you on a whole other level. She might not show it I mean I know she can be…”

Andrew nods knowing the answer, “Yeah she is, but she’s also fun and funny and beautiful.”

“Oh good you see that.” Matt grins, “It’s just that I feel like I have to be her cheerleader with the guys she dates because they all think she’s this cold and closed off bitch and they treat her like it. I mean it’s probably why she hasn’t had a substantial relationship in the time I’ve known her. That and they all look at Jen and hit on her right in front of Amber…and me.”

Andrew’s eyes widen at that, “It sounds like she could pick them better back then.”

Matt shrugs, “It’s more like she’s a magnet for assholes. It has me and Jen convinced her parents put a curse on her at birth. Sorry I’m probably revealing too much you just seem like a good guy and Amber deserves that after everything. And you not running after you found out makes me worry, she’s not gonna take it well if you stomp on her heart further into this relationship.”

Andrew nods, “Don’t worry about it I get it and she’s lucky she had you two when she was in New York. Look I get that you think I’m gonna run but I’m not and certainly not because of Amber’s past. I had a crappy childhood too; I had a parent who went through a mental health crisis too. I didn’t have it near as bad as she did, I didn’t shove pills down my mom’s throat or went into foster care because it was so bad. But I get how it can drag you down and I’m not gonna do that to her. If it doesn’t work out it won’t be because of her past or how I treat her, I promise.”

Matt looks at him impressed, “Maybe don’t say all of that to Jen because the hot doctor schtick with the sensitive soul might make her leave me for you.”

Andrew chuckles at that, “Well from what I’ve seen that’s not gonna be an issue for you two. I mean she said yes to marrying you and traveled across the country so you could get a diagnosis. He pulls out his phone, “Shepherd wants us to meet her in the peds floor, let’s go.” He and Matt leave the lab to meet Amelia.

Jen and I walk down the hall to the board room passing Jo as she and the interns do rounds. I’m sure from a regular hospital staff member’s point of view we look strange together. They see me in my scrubs and her in her designer clothes and well-done ponytail and think why are they together? It’s what so many of my med school classmates think and I can understand it but I also know that despite our differences Jen was there for me when no one else was.

Every heartbreak or research paper stress she was always there to help and talk to me and take me away for a while. It helps that both of our fathers were deadbeat junkies. The only difference is her mom is saner than mine and took her away from him when she could. I think that’s why she’s more stable than me and why she’s the joy to my gloom, she had some stability unlike me. I don’t resent her for it though if anything she’s the only one who has given me stability when I needed it. Jen looks around at the pastel walls and toys on the desks and I realize we went the wrong way.

“Damn it.” I say frustrated, “Wrong way, we’re on the peds floor this place is a maze. I’ll get us out don’t worry.”

“Hey so I didn’t want to tell you this in front of the guys because I figured you’d go to your dark place.” I look at her curious as we continue walking down the hall, “Your mom keeps leaving me messages I think like four this week.”

I groan at that unfortunate tidbit, for some reason my mom has been trying to talk to me for the past year and of course I declined. The only time my mother called me was to ask for money or when she goes off her meds and rants to me about what a colossal disappointment I am. It aggravates me she’s using Jen to get to me, “Yeah well I hope you told her I’m closing down the library every night.”

“I told her I haven’t seen you.” Jen grins knowing how much I detest my mother, “For all I know you could be a crack ho by now.”

I chuckle darkly imagining my mom’s face hearing that, “That is perfect thank you. Speaking of my side of our messy family I should tell you something before you-”

“Alex!” I freeze on the spot and look up to find Alex with Amelia talking to Andrew and Matt. He looks in our direction after Jen called his name.

You missed everything about Italy, the sand of the beaches, the sweet air, something about the people, you missed it all. There were two things that Italy didn’t have that you loved more, Amelia Shepherd and one of the best cardiothoracic surgery programs in the whole world.

Unfortunately, when you’d heard Amelia had a brain tumor that was tricky at best, you worried that soon, you might lose half of the reason you’d fallen in love with America. You remembered when they’d told you that you couldn’t be in the O.R. with her to monitor her vitals, it felt like you’d had a heart attack, your heart almost stopped, you swore it had. Amelia couldn’t bare to look at you.

“Hey,” she’d asked you to stay back after, “I know Andrew called you in to monitor my heart function and-and all that while the surgery was happening, and our relationship kind of… well it kind of puts a wrench in that. If you wanted to go home-.” You stop listening, and you cut her off quickly, “No. Amelia, stop it. I’m not going home! If they needed me in there after they learned their stupid lesson and I’d gone home, I don’t know… I don’t know what I’d do with myself!” You put your head into your hands, sighing a bit, you look up to see Amelia with a wide grin on her face, laughing softly, “You know, you sound sexy even when you’re upset at me,” You laugh a bit with her, hitting her arm softly. “You say that to all the Italian girls,” You joke with her as she rolls her eyes, “Only the ones that I love.”

You smile at her wearily, you haven’t been together long, you wouldn’t want her to do that to placate you should she… should she die, “You don’t have to do that, Amelia. If you aren’t there yet.” Your hand holds her tightly, rubbing your thumb over hers softly. She shakes her head, smiling at you, “I don’t have to, but, I’m there. I love you, and you’d better make sure the way that Koracick shaves my head looks fucking cool.” You laugh a bit as you kiss her forehead, “Duh, that’s about the only say I’m getting in this surgery.”

You watched as Amelia was wheeled out, leaving you alone in her room. You sat for a while until you felt your phone buzz in your back pocket, you slid it out, only to see the contact: Andy… Andrew… Shit. You burst out of your seat, your fear carrying your feet down the hallway and into the O.R. hallway, past the red line on the floor and into the halls, you grab an O.R. mask, pull it on, and run into the O.R. “What is happening to her?” You hear Koracick groan as he chastises Andrew, “You called your big sister because you didn’t like a call I made?” Andrew sighs, “Her heart is getting arrhythmias, figured you should stay and check it. Koracick didn’t like that.” Tom rolls his eyes, “Look wonder twins, I know you two leaned on one another and all that but you can not tag team me with Shepherd’s girlfriend, I have it handled and I’m almost done!” He’s tense but working at a steady pace. You sigh, he has a point, and as a doctor, you know that you’d never let a patient's significant other do this at all. You turn out of the room until you hear Tom mutter something, “Fine. DeLuca, go scrub in, get some gloves on and monitor her heart rate, don’t make me regret this.” You nod, smiling to yourself as you scrub in. When you re-enter the operating room, you shoot your brother a small smile, one that he can discern even with your mask on. You hold Amelia’s hand as you watch her heart rate, for just a second, when you pick up her hand, it picks up before settling down. It’s the reaction to stimuli but it causes your heart to well up a bit. Tom chuckles a bit to himself, considering you for a moment, “You know that Amelia and me at one point-” You roll your eyes, “I did but right now really isn’t the time for that considering that you are wrist deep into her brain.” He rolls his eyes, “Touche. I just have to do this and…” You feel yourself hold a breath in for just a moment, “We’re good to close up.” You exhale, leaving Tom to eye you for a moment, “The two of you can step out now, thank you for your expertise, DeLuca.” You roll your eyes and smile at him, “I’ll be waiting in her room, Tom.” You and your brother step out, scrubbing out as you look over at him for just a moment, “Andy? Thank you for calling me in there… Even though Tom is definitely going to hate you for that later.” You laugh as he smiles at you, “Hey, I did it for you, just use those super-talented surgeon powers to get me out of the bind later?” You shoot him a wide smile and nod, “Always, brother.” When you finish, you and Andrew walk up to Amelia’s hospital room, being greeted by Meredith, Owen, and Maggie, also awaiting for Amelia to come up from surgery. They turn and look at the both of you with questioning stares, “She was perfectly fine, besides a few arrhythmias, she should wake up with absolutely no tumor and no risky behaviors.” Owen looks relieved and pulls you into a hug, you chuckle as he realizes what he just did, “Not there yet Owen, I’m still the new girlfriend and you’re her ex-husband.” He chuckles as you pull away, seeing Andrew and Meredith talking in hushed whispers by the door, the atmosphere changes when Amelia is wheeled into her hospital room. She’s more awake, though still groggy.

Koracick sighs, “You all need to stop crowding her, let me make sure she’s all there first.” You all take a collective step back, Andrew taking a step out alongside Owen backing away to being closer to the door. “Alright, Amelia… Do you know who the president is?” She nods, “Unfortunately, I do,” She laughs a bit, “Comment s'est passé l'opération?” She asks as you all share confused looks around the room for a moment, “Does she know French normally?” You ask as Owen shrugs, “She never knew French… I don’t think..?” Meredith suddenly lights up, “The Shepherd children all went to French preschool!” She practically squeals, dragging the attention from Andrew and Jo in the hallway, she quietly apologizes and Tom nods, “Besides the French, she seems to be… alert.” She’d reacted to Meredith’s loud exclamation prior as the rest of you had, as well as the regular post-brain surgery tests seemed to have gone swimmingly. After a bit of commotion, people slowly began to make their way out of her hospital room, all except for you, you kept your hand in hers as you lay against her lap, “I just wanted you to know… You did awesome in there, Amelia.” She laughs a bit, “High praise from the famous heart doctor.” You shake your head, “Being serious here, I just am happy that you’re okay.” She nods as you look up at her, she’s still a bit loopy but she’s all there.

“I’m also being serious here, I’d never leave you hanging like that, I’m here for you for as long as you want.” You smile, pecking her on the cheek, “I’ll be holding you to that, Amelia Shepherd.”
