ExxonMobil has been touting its commitment to "reducing carbon emissions with innovative energy solutions". Chevron would like to remind you it is keeping the lights on during this dark time. BP is going #NetZero, but is also very proud of the "digital innovations" on its new, enormous oil drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile Shell insists it really supports women in traditionally male-dominated jobs.
A casual social media user might get the impression the fossil fuel industry views itself as a social justice warrior, fighting on behalf of the poor, the marginalized, and women – at least based on its marketing material in recent years.
These campaigns fall into what a handful of sociologists and economists call "discourses of delay". While oil and gas companies have a long track record of denying climate change, even after their own scientists repeatedly warned of the harm caused by burning fossil fuels, now the industry's messaging is far more subtle and in many ways more effective than outright climate science denial.
By downplaying the urgency of the climate crisis, the industry has new tools to delay efforts to curb fossil fuel emissions. And worse yet: even industry critics haven't fully caught up to this new approach.
"If you just focus on climate denial, then all of this other stuff is missed," explains Robert Brulle, an environmental sociologist and visiting professor at Brown University.
Brulle, who published a peer-reviewed study in 2019 that analyzed major oil corporations' advertising spending over a 30-year period, says the "lion's share" of ad dollars were directed not toward denial, or even toward the industry's products, but toward pro-fossil fuel propaganda – campaigns that remind people over and over again about all the great things oil companies do, how dependent we are on fossil fuels, and how integral the industry is to society.
"They're spending probably five or 10 times more on all this corporate promotion advertising," he says. "And yet the climate movement seems to only focus on the science denial part."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged households to set up solar trees to meet the increasing energy demand of India, and contribute to saving up to 15 per cent electricity for every house.
Addressing a post-budget webinar on 'Energy for Sustainable Growth' he also said that four pilot projects for coal gasification and conversion of coal into chemicals required for the industry will be set up to evolve the technical and financial viability of transitioning to renewable energy.
PM Modi said, "With the coming years, India's energy demands will increase, therefore, we must transition to renewable energy."
"Every household should develop its own solar tree that can contribute to saving up to 15 per cent electricity of that house. It will not only be unique but will be environment-friendly," he added.
Further, he said that the seminar intends to focus on the implementation of the new budget schemes and to chalk out ways through which the execution that is effective and concrete can begin.
"We have to focus on the seamless implementation of the Budget to benefit the masses. These seminars are designed for industries to come up with innovative solutions that can give optimum outcomes of this year's budget," PM Modi said.
Referring to India's COP26 goals of achieving the NetZero target by 2030, the Prime Minister said that he considers it as an opportunity and not a challenge.
"By 2030, India has set the target of extracting 50 per cent of its energy from non-fossil fuels. It is our opportunity to shift to more sustainable practices. We need to focus on building a hydrogen ecosystem in which the private sector can play a pivotal role," he said.
PM Modi further said the Union Budget 2022-23 has drawn a special focus on Battery Swapping Policy that can scale India's energy efficiency capabilities.

Premier Modular acquires NetZero Buildings
Premier Modular has acquired energy-efficient school specialist NetZero Buildings.
NetZero Buildings specialises in the design, manufacture and delivery of low carbon school buildings.
The acquisition will further boost offsite specialist Premier which is on track to increase turnover from £65m in 2020 to more than £100m this year.
David Harris, Managing Director of Premier Modular, said, “We see fantastic synergies and potential for collaboration between our two businesses. Premier offers new routes to market for NetZero Buildings and the opportunity to deliver their innovative building solutions to new customer segments in addition to their strong presence in the education sector.

Premier Modular was established in 1956 and is based in East Yorkshire where it has five factories on a 22-acre site.
It offers a full range of design, offsite manufacturing, fitting out and construction services to public and private sector clients, and contractors.
Current projects include a £2.8m contract with Balfour Beatty to provide a two-storey office building to support the Department of Health’s NHS testing programme; a £1.5m contract in partnership with Zedpods to manufacture affordable housing for Bromley Council, and a £3m contract to provide two buildings at RAF Leeming.
