Summary: Dean and Y/N have to pretend to be married for a case. But this isn’t any ordinary case. Married couples have gone missing from Albert Lea, Minnesota, every six months for the last few years but there is almost zero evidence. People don’t just disappear like that do they? With Bobby and Sam’s help, plus an ally in their new town, they have just under six months to figure it out. Chances are they’ll survive the case, but will their friendship survive their fake marriage?

Loosely based/inspired by the song Making Circles by Christian Kane and I just felt this needed to be written. There will be lyrics dispersed throughout the entire story. Dean leapt over the dead vessel and scooped Y/N into his arms. “Shhh, it’s okay. I’ve got you.” He rubbed one hand soothingly down her back, while the other cupped her head, pressing his lips to her temple. “I was so scared. I thought I’d lost you. It’s okay, honey. I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”

Y/N freely wept, feeling secure in Dean’s arms. She let out the anger, the disappointment, the hurt, the love. She let out everything that she had been holding in over the last six months. She let it out until she felt herself run dry. Dean never once complained, even though he must have been uncomfortable, not to mention still wearing only his towel. “I’m sorry, Dean.”

“Hey, hey. What are you sorry for? You’ve got nothing to apologize for,” Dean reassured her, pulling away slightly, taking in her tired, red rimmed eyes and tear stained face. His thumb gently brushed the remaining tears from her cheeks.

“For the last six months. For forgetting it wasn’t real and getting wrapped up in the fantasy we built for ourselves. It was my pain she was feeding off of and that is what brought her here. I almost cost us our lives,” she sniffed, pulling away further.

Dean wasn’t having it and kept her snug in his hold. “No. Do not do that. It may have been your pain that brought her here, but she’s gone. It’s over. And you weren’t the only one. I let myself get caught up in this life. It was perfect and it was ours, even if it was only for a short time.”

“I guess we can call Bobby and Sam and let them know the case is over,” she pondered aloud, resting her head on his shoulder.

“Or, we could rest. We’ve been working this case for the last five and half months. I think we’ve earned some paid time off,” Dean chuckled softly, kissing the top of her head. “Why don’t I run you a nice hot bath and you relax for a bit. Then movie night?”

“That sounds amazing actually,” she sighed, pulling herself off of Dean. He grabbed a pair of sweats from the dresser and pulled them on under the towel, finally discarding the wet terrycloth. He led her to the bathroom and filled the tub with hot water while she watched him. He even added the essential oils she liked.

“Okay, you just relax a while and I’ll bring you something to sleep in. I’ll make some popcorn and get us a movie, okay?” Dean verified with her before he left. She nodded, meeting his eyes. He lingered, his hand on the knob, before slowly shutting the door.

“Cas, buddy. I, uh, I need some help,” Dean called for the angel.

“Hello, Dean,” Cas appeared in the room, taking in the dead angel at his feet. “Oh, Annabeth.”

“Listen, the case is over, the angel is dead, but Y/N is a little freaked out since it tried to smite her and all. Can you take care of this?” Dean pointed to the body and the scorch marks on the carpet.

“Yes, Dean. Of course,” Cas snapped his fingers and everything was perfect like he hadn’t just killed an angel in their bedroom.

“Great, buddy. Thanks. Listen, don’t say anything to Bobby or Sam, okay? We just need a few days.” Dean explained and Cas nodded his acknowledgement and disappeared from view.

Dean grabbed a pair of her sleep shorts and his comfiest band tee for her to sleep in. He knocked on the door. “Yeah?”

“Honey, I brought your clothes, I’m just going to leave them on the counter, okay?” He asked through the door.

“Thank you,” she murmured. Dean opened the door, a puff of steam escaping through the crack he used to slip his arm in and place her clothes on the vanity. He softly pulled the door shut and walked downstairs.

She had always borrowed his shirts, but since they moved into this house, into this life, it had become a habit for her. Dean guessed in a way, they both found comfort in it. She liked the softness of the fabric against her skin and his lingering scent, and he loved seeing her in his clothes. Dean’s thoughts circled in his mind as he waited for the popcorn to pop. For the last few months, they’d been going round and round, fighting whatever this was. Denying the feelings that had been bubbling at the surface. What if this was where they were supposed to be?

He shook the thought away, but it stuck there in the back of his mind. He went about gathering the snacks and, when he heard the water draining above him, he grabbed the pint of brown butter bourbon truffle ice cream from the freezer and added to the already loaded tray. He carried it all upstairs to their bedroom. Y/N was sitting on her side, knees tucked under her chin. Dean set the tray on the bench at the end of the bed and sat down next to her.

“Feel better?”

“Yeah, a little. Thank you.”

“You don’t have to thank me, honey,” he responded. “I’ve got all the feel good stuff here. Popcorn, your favorite bourbon ice cream, chocolate covered almonds and, of course, bourbon. What would you like to start with?”

“Ice cream, please,” she reached her hand out for the carton. Dean passed it to her with a spoon and she lifted the first bite to her mouth, humming around the utensil. “This is sinfully delicious.”

“You can’t do that,” Dean mumbled, his eyes locked on her.

“Do what?” she asked, licking the spoon.

“Do shit that makes me want to kiss you,” he admitted.

“You wanna kiss me?” she blinked, her eyes wide, like a deer in the headlights. It was one thing for him to kiss her in a moment. It was an entirely different for him to be thinking about it when it’s just them in that moment.

“I never thought we’d end up here, but what if we’re right where we belong?” Dean asked.

“What are you saying, Dean?” Y/N urged him to say the words she had been feeling for months.

“I guess I’m saying is what if we try this? You and me, really try this thing. It may have been the case that forced us together, but I think I wanna stay in it. I want to be with you, Y/N.” Dean declared.

“I’ve been so afraid to really tell you how I felt. I wanted it to be real, but I thought I was just seeing things that weren’t really there. I want to do this, Dean. I want to see if we can make this work out in the real world. In our world. So please, just kiss me already,” she whispered, leaning in and closing the distance between them.

“You’re so bossy,” he smirked, capturing her face with both hands. His lips latched onto hers with the force and need of months of pent up desire and want. The kiss was soft and tender, but full of fire, everything she knew Dean to be and more.

It wasn’t long before clothes were discarded and Dean nestled himself between her legs. “Honey, are you sure you want this?”

“We’ve been married for six months now, babe, don’t you think we waited long enough?” she giggled.

“God yes,” Dean ducked his head, kissing along her jaw, before honing in on the soft spot just below her ear. A sinful moan left her mouth and Dean pushed his hips forward, easing himself into her tight channel. “Oh fuck.”

“Oh god yes,” she moaned again as Dean pressed fully into her. “Oh Christ, please fucking move. I can’t wait any longer, babe.”

“I just-I need a minute. You’re so fucking tight and I don’t want this to be over before it begins.” Dean panted, taking a moment to collect himself before he eased out and back in at a languid pace.

“Oh fuck yes, oh my god!” Y/N’s cries of pleasure bounced off the walls, spurring Dean to increase his pace.

“Oh honey, I ain’t gonna last if you keep squeezing me like that,” Dean grunted.

“Then don’t. Fuck me now, Dean. We can make love later. I just need to feel you,” she pleaded, wrapping her legs around his waist.

“Oh fuck!” Dean pounded into her furiously, the smack of skin on skin filling the room.

“Dean!” Y/N cried out as she hit the peak and came crashing around Dean, pulling him to his own end, he spilled inside of her.

They laid side by side, blankets askew, both of them breathing heavily. Dean turned to his side to look at her, the sheen of sweat making her glow in the dim lights of the room.

“Do you think the moon is jealous of how pretty you are?” he smiled dopily.

“Are you flirting with me?” she giggled.

“Yes. Yes I am,” he kissed her. “So movie?”

“Nope. I just wanna finish that ice cream, then get some sleep, so we can do that again in the morning,” she confessed.

“I can get on board with that plan, honey,” he laughed.

“Dean, I just have one question,” she sat up and dug into the half-melted pint. “What’d’ya do with the dead body?”

“Oh, yeah, That. Well, I called Cas to clean up after his brethren. Easy peasy,” Dean replied.

“We’ll have to do something nice for him. Do angels like fruit baskets?” she wondered, offering Dean the next bite. “Maybe we’ll get him a new tie.”

“We’re naked in bed, eating ice cream, can we please not talk about the angel?” Dean griped, stealing the ice cream.

“We are naked in bed, eating ice cream. I could get used to this. Think Bobby will let us keep the house?”

“As long I can keep you all to myself for the next two weeks, I don’t give a shit what Bobby does with it,” Dean pulled her into his lap, kissing her swiftly.

They say that relationships that start under extreme circumstances never last, but when you’re a hunter, most situations are extreme. It was a chance they were willing to take, going round and round trying to work it out, instead of getting hell bent and bound. They’re right where they should be.

I dont know if I am in a cathedral. But “theres” worse the resources necessary to invest a Sunday morning.

Rhubarb & Hazelnut Frangipane Crostata

With nearly everything from strawberries to mangoes available year round coming upon truly seasonal rhubarb feels a bit special. It always feels like the right way to find it is to come across a rogue patch of rhubarb growing in the shade beside a farmhouse, or piled high on a stand in the farmer's market, one end still dusted with sooty black dirt and the other sprouting flat green leaves. However, the only time I have found rhubarb in San Diego is in the shelves of my local Whole Foods, slightly less rustic than what I hoped for. The aseptic stalks can usually be found near other more exotic fare like the daikon or the nopales, arranged neatly, stalks wiped clean and trimmed at the top. That is ok though because after being placed on a soft bed of hazelnut frangipane, blanketed with honey and vanilla, then stuck into a 400F oven until it's tops are nearly caramelized black and the bottoms are a jammy pale pink, they taste just as good.

I was in Paris for the a cold, mostly sunny, but at times rainy, mid-spring week in April. I love how seasonal the cooking was nearly everywhere I ate, with white asparagus and rhubarb making appearances in nearly every menu I came across, nestled in green garlic aioli and coated with breadcrumbs or swirled into rice pudding speckled with vanilla beans. And most inspiringly, I did finally find my wild pile of rhubarb in a farmer's market in St. Germain. It was nestled in between deep purple beets and white-tipped French radishes. Sadly I had no kitchen in my teensy hotel room to make use of it so settled for snapping a picture on my iPhone and making my mind up to find rhubarb as soon as I got back home. It worked out ok.

Crostatas are one of my favorite pie-type desserts, there is no lattice-work or crimping to worry about and in my opinion, a perfect crust-to-filling ratio. And rhubarb and hazelnut are two flavors I ran into a lot during my week in Paris: rhubarb macarons, chocolate hazelnut praline spread on buckwheat crepes, a slice of rhubarb almond tea loaf with my cafe noisette, hazelnut pastry cream inside a Paris-brest, and the aforementioned rhubarb rice pudding to name a few. So in a way this crostata is an ode to a perfect spring week in Paris, with sunny days, a bit of rain and a lot of rhubarb.

RECIPE:

RHUBARB & HAZELNUT FRANGIPANE CROSTATA

Makes 1 large crostata

INGREDIENTS:

Rye Crust:

2/3 cup AP flour

2/3 cup rye flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

8 tablespoons of cold butter, cubed

1/4 to 1/3 cup of ice water

3/4 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar

Hazelnut Frangipane:

1 cup blanched toasted hazelnuts

1/2 cup brown sugar

5 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons AP flour

1 egg

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Optional: 1 tablespoon hazelnut liquor (like Frangelico)

Assembly:

4 large stalks (about 1.5lbs) of rhubarb

1/2 cup of honey

1/4 teaspoon vanilla paste

1 egg

1 tablespoon of cream or milk

INSTRUCTIONS:

To make the crust: Mix together the flours, salt, and sugar together in the bowl of a food processor. Add the butter in and process until you have small pea-sized pieces. Add in the apple cider vinegar and 1/4 cup of the water into the dough. Process until the dough just comes together when pressed. If too dry add the remaining water in, one tablespoon at a time until it comes together. Remove, wrap in plastic wrap and chill for one hour.

To make the frangipane: Meanwhile, combine hazelnuts and the sugar in the bowl of a food processor and process until well ground. Add in all the other ingredients and process until smooth. I like to add some hazelnuts in at the very end for some crunch, but this is up to you.

To make the pie: When you're ready to make the filling and assemble the pie, preheat oven to 400F.

Roll out the pastry dough to a ~1/4 inch thick rectangle on a non-stick mat for easy transfer. Spread the hazelnut frangipane over the surface of the pie, leaving about 1.5 inches of uncovered crust at the edges to fold over. Layer the chopped rhubarb over the top of the hazelnut frangipane.

Mix the honey with the vanilla paste and generously brush over the rhubarb. Whisk the egg with cream for an egg wash and brush the edges of the crust with it. Top the crust with demerara sugar.

Bake in the oven for 35-45 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and the rhubarb looks caramelized on top. At 15 minutes, quickly remove the pie from the oven to brush more vanilla honey over the rhubarb. Note to check the pie at 25 minutes and if the rhubarb is already looking quite dark on top, cover it with foil to prevent it from scorching too much.

Best served with crème anglaise (I made mine with hazelnut milk, which explains why it has a more brownish tint).

I like adding the creme anglaise to the pie but if you are feeling a bit lazy a generous layer of mascarpone mixed with brown sugar squeezed in between the hazelnut frangipane and the rhubarb is equally nice. Or for the lazy and mascarpone-less, there is always a scoop of ice cream. Best eaten warm out of oven, naturally.

These are a kiwi staple

Long time readers of this tumblr will be familiar with my attitude towards dark chocolate covered almonds, as one of the symptoms of the cultural rot that is the very Satan-conceived concept of the superfood. If you aren’t, you can read my rant here.

Anyway, I saw this little packet in Trader Joe’s, didn’t read the label closely, and gasped. Had Trader Joe’s finally begun stocking, among the FOUR TYPES OF DARK CHOCOLATE COVERED ALMONDS they stock, one single tiny packet of milk chocolate covered almonds?

I was so ready to forgive. Reader, I bought one.

But no. I got it home, opened it up, popped one into my mouth, and bit down. Shortly thereafter, a demon of rage burst forth from my chest and leveled a city block.

Because as you have probably already seen but I did not, these are “Chocolatey Coated”. Know what that means? It means a chocolate-like substance coats these almonds. It’s actually worse than dark chocolate. It’s unsweetened baker’s chocolate.

Trader Joe’s now stocks FIVE KINDS of chocolate covered almonds that are not covered in milk chocolate. I’m going to lose my mcfucking mind.
