Robert Mamentaug his marke
The mark of Robert Mamentaug (also spelled Momontaug or Momentauge) seen here on a deed for land from so-called Boston, south to present day Roxbury, Massachusetts and including Deer Island. Dated 1684.
Momontaug is identified as a counselor to Josias Wampatuck, or “Charles Josias alias Josias Wampatuck soñe and Heire of Josias Wampatuck late Sachem of the Indians Inhabiting the Massachusets in New England and Grandson of Chicatabut the Former Sachem…” Though we have yet to find out more information about Robert Momontaug, it can be presumed that Momontaug, as with Wampatuck, had ties to land at Mattakeeset, Neponset, Ponkapaug and Wessagusset - areas south and slightly west of present-day Boston, Massachusetts.
This document is referred to as a quitclaim deed for the peninsula of Boston, Massachusetts. Signed March 19, 1684. Seen at the Massachusetts Historical Society.

Map of New England after the Bakerite wars of 2307-2319.
Charlie Baker, 9th of his name, declared war on the Dunkin-General-hospitals dynasty in boston from his stronghold in Milton MA. This was the first outbreak in hostilities in the region for more than 600 years, since the coup which politically separated the region from their lords in South Anglia, then England. He declared war after the dynasty refused to place him on the ballot, a variety of local democratic ticket. However, his stronghold on the neponset river was quickly breached, forcing a tactical retreat to allied lands in the south. This act which pulled all local eyes to boston, however, prompted a number of local independence movements culminating in a major redrawing of the political and cultural borders of the region. New Hamshire was among the first to arrest the massachusetts diplomats in the region and declare war, hoping to score territory in the north. However, an unpopular peasant levee left them dealing with morale issues as the Massachusetts army quickly advanced and laid siege to the city of manchester. The siege lasted for almost two years, during which time it was renamed Manchingrad after the famous Russian city of stalingrad which resisted teutonic assault for years in the early 20th century and was the turning point in the second war of american supremacy. Over time, the entire region adopted the name manchganistan in reference to the famously unconquerable region between russia and india. Springfield MA, which had long depended on Connecticut for trade along the connecticut river, and Pittsfield which had long allied with Albany, quietly seceded without military intervention as the massachusetts forces were directed north.
In order to support its war effort, however, the nation of massachusetts began a protracted campaign of plundering coastal regions as far north as nova scotia, as well as taking the harbors of portland and portsmouth as naval bases to control the north atlantic. Their southern reach was curtailed by a treaty with New York City, which had in past centuries expanded considerably and separated from Neue York, the french speaking region dominated by torontonian influence. However, both parties began to squeeze connecticut for their mutual military advantage. In 2314 a Marquis of rhode island was designated with the objective to move the front as far into connecticut territory as possible, and this permanent mobile border still exists to this day.

Rumours of a haunting in the Neponset area bring Piper Wright on the trail of a supernatural story. She ropes in MacCready the hired sniper and Facian Longfellow, a Sole Survivor who, despite his prowess in battle, has sworn never to kill.
In the wilderness, they find not a ghost but a lost child, and a gang of ruthless mercenaries who want him for themselves. Luckily, there's a lot Facian, his 10 Charisma and Intimidation perk can do without technically killing anything...
"Facian Longfellow and the Ghost of Neponset Park" is an explosive adventure story in Fallout 4's delightful comic-book style, featuring terrible, shocking violence and attempted child slavery. Think of it as the "pilot episode" for possible further Facian adventures. Read it on Archive of our Own TODAY! if you fancy.

Moswetuset Hummock

Today, I went for a walk and saw the above plaque. My partner and I read it and said to each other that something doesn't feel right about that. Namely, the last bit: With Chickatawbut Governor Winthrop made a treaty which was never broken. Was it possible? Yes, depending on the terms of the treaty it would have been possible for us to live in the world we do and also not have broken one specific treaty, but the lack of specifics concerned me. As such, when I got home, I decided to verify the information.
First step was fairly simple: who are these people. I knew them both basically, but was initially confused as I knew Chickatawbut as Sac'hem not Sagamore, but apparently these are regional dialects of the same word, so clarified well enough. And John Winthrop was the first Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony which was, at the time, separate from the Plymouth colony established about 10 years prior up the Cape. The Massachusett tribe at Ponkapoag, modern descendants of Chickataubut's Neponset band, spell his name thusly and refer to him as Sac'hem, and moving forward in this post I will do the same.
The treaty between Sac'hem Chickataubut and Governor Winthrop was harder to verify. Many sources I attempted to use cited the very plaque I was reading for information about the treaty.
The English colonists claim in histories that they paid Chickataubut for the land now known as Dorchester to his satisfaction, but the Massachusett have a different interpretation. Based on the conists' continued pursuit of land ownership as of at least 1666, the Massachusetts claim that it was not understood by either side of the deal that land was purchased in perpetuity and instead describe a tributary system as one might expect of a feudal lord. That is to say, it was understood by both the colonists and the natives that the land was owned/controlled by Chickataubut and that they were doing the equivalent of paying rent, rather than purchasing the land outright.
As such, I think it is invalid to claim that the treaty was never broken because, while I cannot find a written text of the treaty, it very much appears that the terms as they were understood are no longer in place.
Above is a link to a text used as citation by the Massachusett tribe on the previously linked article, included because it has some of the relevant information in its first chapter.

This fails to make greater boston its own state based on the charles, mystic and neponset basins and is therefore invalid
Also you know those fuckers west of springfield would leave us for west CT to form greater Housatonia in a second, not to mention how pretentious VT would be about being connected to the seaway
Where are my petty new england micronationalisms goddamnit
US state borders but they are based off rivers and mountains

Give a Hoot, Don't Pollute
This. morning I spent two hours picking up trash along the Neponset River in a driving rain with some other folks. It was one of the highlights of my week. I hate litter. I don’t know why people do it. Yesterday I was merging onto the highway when the woman in the car in front of me rolled down her window and tossed two soda cans onto the entrance ramp. There was a lot of traffic, we were just…

Childless Cat Lady: Growing Old with Timmy
In 2011, my mother and I walked into a PetSmart in Attleboro, Massachusetts and were met with quite a few pairs of cats sharing pet carriers: mothers and daughters mostly, sisters in one case, and in a final pairing, two separate cat carriers one with a mother and the other with her son. The Neponset Valley Humane Society brought the pairs to us because we’d requested two cats to adopt after the…

BEER RELEASE “Amelia” – West Coast IPA – 6.8% On draft and for sale to go in our taproom! Behind our building sits the woefully underutilized and largely unknown state park – Squantum Point Park. Rich with history, the park was the summer home of the Neponset tribe, colonial farming and fishing hub, site of the first aerodrome flying contest, and home of Dennison Airport, which boasted aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart as one of its directors. Earhart, known locally as “Miss Amelia”, made regular flights out of Squantum Point en route to becoming one of the world’s most recognized pilots. We dip our wings to Amelia with this brew. It’s a beautifully made West Coast IPA made with centennial and kohatu hops. We are getting high flying flavors of grapefruit, pine, and guava notes. This beer is an instant BRB classic that will leave your head in the clouds wanting another! #breakrockbrewing #squantumpointpark #squantum #marinabay #quincybuilt #amelia #ameliaearhart #aviation #neponset #westcoastipa #ipa #missamelia #loganairport #southshorebeer #macraftbeer https://bit.ly/4d24KPo
