Jackie Brown (1997)

As with other early Tarantino heist films, Jackie Brown is an intricate Fabergé egg.  Motives balance out, events must work like clockwork, and there is a razor-thin margin of error.  Win big or die trying.  But unlike other films like Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction, this particular precious, jewel-encrusted sculpture is perched on the brink of an abyss.  Anything and everything can and should go wrong.  Tarantino takes his time unspooling details, folding time back on itself to catch up with various characters as they come into play or leave the arena in ignominious fashion.  Yet like any state-of-the-art timepiece, it all just… works.  Tarantino’s characters manage to stay a step ahead without seeming like psychics.  

Tarantino is always anachronistic at the best of times.  But Jackie Brown is something of an oddity even for that.  It draws heavily on blaxploitation films and earlier Neo-noir crime thrillers, with a soulful score to boot.  But the story itself is rooted firmly in the late 90s, reliant on early cell phones and the dreaded beeper to drive plot points forward.  We are introduced to Jackie in a long dolly shot, dressed in a stewardess uniform as she passes a colourful mosaic wall.  This could be from the 1960s, with its jangling soundtrack and upbeat color palette.  The racial prejudice Jackie comes up against certainly evoke that era, but also serve as a reminder of how little has changed in the interceding decades.
