The Twilight Samurai (2002)
The Twilight Samurai (2002)
19. Yüzyıl Japonya’sında, samuraylık artık son zamanlarını yaşamaktadır. Iguchi Seibei (Hiroyuki Sanada), feodal köylerin birinde hasta annesi ve iki kızıyla yaşayan düşük rütbeli bir samuraydır. Seibei, diğer samuraylar gibi içmeye gitmez, kadınlara özgü işleri yapar ve akşam olunca evinin yolunu tutar. Bundan dolayı alay konusu olan Seibei’ye çevresindekiler ‘Alacakaranlık Samurayı’ lakabını…

Hiroyuki Sanada, Nenji Kobayashi, Ren Ohsugi, Rie Miyazawa, and Min Tanaka in The Twilight Samurai (Tasogare Seibei) (2002). Dir. Yôji Yamada.
This film eloquently depicts the culture of mid-nineteenth-century Japan. Seibei (Hiroyuki Sanada) is a low-ranking samurai who maintains traditional obligations to his clan during a period when society is changing. Seibei's wife has died of consumption, leaving him to care for his two daughters and senile mother. Indebted by the expenses incurred through the lavish funeral he provided for his wife, Seibei is forced to spend all his time doing extra work to supplement his low income. Tomoe (Rie Miyazawa), a childhood friend of Seibei, has recently been divorced from an abusive husband, and she now begins to spend time with Seibei and his family. Seibei likes her, but is not willing to consider marriage to her because he does not want to impose his lowly status upon her. Circumstances arise that force Seibei to use his samurai fighting skills, even though he is reluctant to do so because he has grown weary of conflict. Clan members soon develop respect for Seibei's skill with the short sword (he had to pawn his long sword), and his superiors bribe him into accepting the task of killing a wayward samurai. Faced with the possibility of dying in combat, Seibei is concerned over the fate of his family, and he is motivated to reveal his feelings for Tomoe. The samurai he is obligated to kill prefers talk over fighting, which has the effect of raising serious existential questions in Seibei's mind.
This is an incredible film.
