We all have demons. Most of us have more demons than we do angels. It is the great human frailty. But Neil is showing us, through Crowley’s slow transition, a glimpse of light through the cracks .
That he becomes less demonic( although not Quite angelic) is due , of course, to his strangled love for Aziraphale . The pain of which is ironically leading him closer to humanity and it’s propensity for the emotional.
That our demons could be tamed or at least reasoned with for a better life is not a new concept. But Crowley presents that possibility to us with a journey that is both hopeful and heartbreaking. There is no free lunch I’m afraid.
Aziraphale on the other hand seems to be de-volving. Perhaps having a meltdown would be a better observation. He is clinging to his angelic countenance and holding by his fingernails and somewhere inside of him he is realizing that the being he has so carefully maintained must learn to bend and let go. And he doesn’t want to and yet when he looks at Crowley he so desperately wants to.
As we all wait for the final pieces of the puzzle to fall together- fervently hoping for a season 3- but if not we know Neil will tell us a story. Meanwhile we can dream with two exquisite characters telling us a universal story that goes back at least 6,000 years.
