For those who would like to learn a little bit more about Neal and his music, this podcast from 2017 is a very good place to start. Singer/Songwriter, guitarist, producer, etc. Neal Casal passed away 8/27/2019. It, obviously, is unfortunate on many fronts including for friends and family which extend across the musical landscape. He was a member of a few current bands and had been in a few high profile backing situations as well. For today’s Crate Digger’s Corner I’m going to list the albums that I have featuring him in fairly prominent roles. He has produced and played on many others (some of which I have as well) but I have to limit the list a little!

Circles Around The Sun- a band formed by Casal after he was tapped to create the Intermission music for the Fare Thee Well shows. The music for those shows can be found on the “Interludes For The Dead” album or on the full 3 show releases of the shows from The Dead (those could be found on the Grateful Dead website).  Check out their album “Meets Joe Russo” which just released a few weeks ago. It has a relaxed and funky vibe to the instrumental tracks.

Hard Working Americans- a super group of modern musicians from the roots and jam communities that have gotten together to play some expansive roots rock music. The four albums in the pictures are self-titled, “The First Waltz”, “Rest In Chaos” and “We’re All In This Together”. I would suggest starting with the studio albums which are the self-titled and “Rest In Chaos”.

GospelbeacH- this is a modern California Country Rock band that is mining the sound of the late-‘60s/early-‘70s Laurel Canyon sound ala CSN&Y. He was most prominent on their first and last album, “Pacific Surf Line” and “Let It Burn” and both are excellent albums.

Ryan Adams and The Cardinals- Neal was the lead guitarist for Ryan Adams’ band The Cardinals. He also was contributing to the songwriting on those albums as well. The albums pictured are “Cold Roses”, “Jacksonville City Nights”, “Easy Tiger” and “Follow The Lights” any of which would be solid entry points for Ryan Adams’ discography.

I remember when I got Neal’s book of photography « A View Of Other Windows » I asked him if he would sign it for me. He stopped what he was doing, laughed and said « No, you really want me to sign it ?! » We had been friends for almost a decade. Today, going through this book, my piles of cds and vinyls of his, I’m very glad I asked him. Grateful for his words. Always. . Quand j’ai acheté le livre de photographies de Neal je lui ai demandé s’il pouvait me le dédicacer. Il s’est esclaffé et a dit « non mais tu veux vraiment que je te le signe ?! » On se connaissait depuis quasi 10 ans mais pour moi c’était toujours aussi incroyable que cette homme que j’admirais tellement soit mon ami.. aujourd’hui j’ai réorganisé ses cds et vinyls.
