The Patwas and the term “Patwa” is derived from the Hindi word “pat”, meaning silk and the Patwas are those who practice this art. They were traditionally weavers and were engaged in making jewellery by threading beads and stones. The Patwas believe that they have descended from Vishnu Deota (Deity). According to the legend, there was no priest to conduct the wedding ceremony of Shiva and Parvati. So, a couple emerged from Lord Vishnu’s chest and the male performed the ceremony. Elder beads! My son has been going to his own #forestschool sessions as part of a local after-school club and loved making his own elder beads yesterday. Elder trees are especially easy to spot at the moment due to their white elderflower umbels but their wood is also fab for woodworking or craft - especially as their inner section or ‘pith’ is so easy to remove (use a tent peg!). ⠀ ⠀ How to: Find a branch of elder wood about 1-2cm in diameter. If you like, ask the Elder tree’s permission first if you are removing a branch from the tree - according to folklore, silence suggest approval! Then grab a hacksaw or secateurs and either cut the branch into shorter bead lengths yourself - or support a child to do it safely. Next, grab a tent peg and poke it into the white pith centre of each bead - the soft pith should easily push out. The best way to do this is to pop the bead end up on the ground and push the peg down so you don’t accidentally stab your hand. Thread your bead or beads onto a piece of string and voila! You have elder bead jewellery. ⠀ ⠀ More: You can also strip the bark from the branch as a whole or in parts using a potato peeler to create differently patterned beads. My son loved doing this mainly because he got to use tools to cut (with supervision!). Which is one of the great things about outdoor learning - it’s so experiential - helping us learn not just with our minds but also with our bodies.
