3rd anni req 11: [NIGHTBRINGER] belphie, lucifer / deep sleep
ao3 link
note: i've mostly been doing these in the order i remember getting them so far, but i might start skipping around, since they're quite lucifer-frontloaded (not that i'm complaining). anyway - this is based on nb lesson 12, where mc's in that curse-coma, but! the twist is that ik can somehow still speak through it. since, y'know, special reaper curse
â â â â â
â...oh, youâre here.â
Lucifer doesnât look up as Belphie slips into the room. He stays there, sitting in a chair heâs dragged from the dining room, half-hunched over, with his forearms on his knees. Belphie gets the distinct feeling that his oldest brother hasnât slept in the last forty-eight hours.
He glances over at the wan face of the roomâs only other occupant. â...still not up?â
âSolomon said not to expect it to happen soon,â Lucifer says blankly. âWe donât know the exact nature of the curse. By all means, it should have been fatal.â
They both look at IKâs blank face. The light flickers in a way that, for a moment, makes her look as if sheâs blinking awake - though Belphie doesnât dare hope.
âWeird kid,â He mumbles, more to her than Lucifer. âYou canât do magic, but you can survive reaper curses? If you can do that, why didnât youâŚâ
'Why didnât you stop us from trying to hurt you?' is what he means, but he canât finish the question. Lucifer looks as if he knows what he was going to say, anyway.
âSo whereâs Solomon gone, then?â He asks after a beat, frowning. âAll that talk, and heâs not even staying to look after her?â
âHe said heâd look for solutions in the tomes at the cave. And that he was leaving IK in charge.â
Yeah, thatâs right.
âAs if hâ huh?â
They both whip around. IK hasnât moved.
Belphie glances quickly at Lucifer. âDid you hearâ?â
âYes.â His response is short and harried. âWhat was that?â
They both fall silent for a moment, listening hard. Nothing.
âMaybe weâre just hearing things,â Belphie says reluctantly, though heâd swear it to anyone that he just heard IK speaking, loud and clear.
âDo you think thatâs likely?â Lucifer stands up, staring around the room like a sentinel, a dangerous shadow falling over his face. âIt could be any manner of mimicry. If somethingâs gotten inââ
Wait, did you hear me?
Lucifer goes dead silent. There's no mistaking that voice - but thereâs also no mistaking the fact that the speaker has not moved an inch.
After a moment, Belphie tries, âIK?â
You did! She sounds downright joyful - the words donât quite ring like speech does in a room, but the voice in their heads is clear as day. I was so BORED.
âYou can talk?â He asks, bewildered. âWait, youâreâ canât you open your eyes?â
No. Do you think I havenât tried? Now she sounds aggravated. Iâve been awake this whole time. I just canât bloody move.
âWatch your language,â He says automatically.
Donât start. Iâm losing my mind here. But you can actually hear me now!
âYes, youâve said that already.â Lucifer sits down again, leaning forward, practically on the edge of his seat. âHow much do you remember?â
Hmm. I remember you both trying to kill me.
A pause. Then Lucifer asks, voice suddenly about half as loud, âWhat is your situation, then?â
Thereâs a sort of buzz, as if IK is laughing. Not much going on. Itâs like sitting in a dark room. I can hear things coming from outside, but I canât see anything. It sucks.
Say, if you were a shark, what kind would you be?
âWhat?â
I think youâd be a nurse shark, Belphie, because theyâre usually chill, except when they arenât. And Lucifer would be⌠a blue shark, because thatâs his favourite colour.
They exchange mildly bemused looks. After a moment, Lucifer says slowly, âHow do you know that? Iâve never told you.â
âŚuh⌠Belphie gets the distinct feeling that IK is panicking. ...context clues. You know, clothes and stuff.
âYouâve only seen him wearing red,â He says a little suspiciously.
And whatâs the opposite of red? Blue. Next question.
Itâs no use trying to pry. Every time this happens - every time Belphie gets the unnerving feeling that their attendant knows them better than they even know themselves - he tries to figure out why, and IK deflects. The dedication would be impressive if it wasnât annoying.
Who is this kid? She shows up, completely out cold, and hasnât even been awake for an hour by the time sheâs been put in charge of the Devildomâs newly-minted residents. Then Solomon, of all people, that sorcerer whose reputation long precedes him, shows up calling her his ward, even though sheâs got no magic to speak of.
Though Belphie doesnât know what else to call her knack for making them⌠talk. She takes to the Devildom like a duck to water - practically skips through it all while theyâre still mired in their own rotten souls. They shouldâve been insulted that Diavolo would think this ridiculous little thing capable of handling the seven of them, but IK does it like itâs second nature.
Thatâs the frustrating part. Theyâll tell her near-everything, and IK tells them absolutely nothing. And it isnât that theyâre stupid, or blind, or so self-absorbed that they donât notice when she goes quiet - when she stares off at something that isnât there, eyes filled with some inexplicable loneliness that should be far beyond her years.
Is Satan around? IK asks. He was in here, reading, before. He couldnât hear me then, but maybe he will now.
âUm⌠he went out.â Belphie sits down on the foot of the bed. âHey. Iâm⌠not angry with you anymore.â
Wow. Do you want an award?
âNo, Iââ He swallows. His tail flicks up behind him, and he seizes it for comfort before he can stop himself. ââIâm sorry. Thatâs what I meant.â
Oh.
Okay.
He waits for a moment. Thereâs no other response. He looks at Lucifer.
His brotherâs face is twisted into something that might resemble remorse. The ironic part is that Ik would probably know better than he does, if only she could open her eyes to see.
âWeâre doing what we can,â is all Lucifer says after a while. âYou will be alright. I can promise you that.â
Thatâs a relief, she says, a touch ironically. So am I just stuck like this until Solomon figures something out?
Luciferâs jaw tightens. â...I donât know. All we can do is wait.â
Great. Iâll get right on that.
Belphie scoffs. âI donât know how youâre making jokes right now. You couldâve died. You still might now.â
Oh, I wouldnât worry about that, says IK dryly. I know what being dead feels like. This isn't anything like it.
âWhat? Whatâs that supposed to mean?â
No answer. Belphie shoots an apprehensive look at Lucifer, then leans forward. âHey. Iâm talking to you.â
Silence. He doesnât know if IKâs refusing to speak, or if the connection has broken already. He makes as if to stand up, to go find Barbatos, or Diavolo, or anyone who might know how to repair it. He can't lose it now.
Heâs poured his heart out to her once before, then hadnât even waited a day to turn on her. He doesnât know what, but he has to do something about it, right?
But, before he can, Lucifer takes a deep breath, then abruptly stands up.
â...I have to go,â He mutters.
That, at least, gets IK to speak up again - Belphie feels a rather distracted spark of relief. Where are you going?
âOut,â He replies sharply, then pauses, and sighs. â...I need to clear my head. Youâre⌠incomprehensible.â
Thatâs the nicest thing anyoneâs ever said to me.
âŚhey. Youâll come back and talk to me, right? Itâs really boring in here.
âIs that what you want?â He asks, softer.
Itâd be nice.
Lucifer looks at IK for a moment, then leans down. Belphie doesnât quite see what he does, but when he straightens up again, the blankest are tucked in more snugly, and IKâs hair looks a little neater than it did before.
âThen I will,â Lucifer tells her, and steps back. With one last, lingering glance, he turns on his heel, and walks out.
âŚ
âŚBelphie, are you still there?
âYeah,â He says quietly, and decides to take Luciferâs seat. âAre you okay?â
Not the best Iâve been. Not the best week Iâve had, either.
He wishes he had some water. âThatâs our fault, isnât it?â
Sorry.
âDonâtâ what are you saying sorry for? You alwaysââ He stops himself before he can finish. ââyouâre so weird.â
A pause. Then, Thatâs the nicest thing anyoneâs ever said to me.
âStop it. JustâŚâ He drags a hand through his hair and catches a finger on his left horn. â...just let me feel bad, will you?â
âŚfine.
He takes a breath. â...Beelâs okay, by the way. I donât know if youâve heard him.â
I did. Iâm really glad.
âHeâs worried. We all are. Look, Iââ
Donât bother, IK interrupts. âŚI get it, I mean. You donât have to explain it to me.
âI really donât get you,â He mumbles.
Another laughing sound. I get that a lot.
âArenât you scared? Arenât you angry?â
Not angry. Scared⌠maybe.
Doesnât matter, though. Itâll be fine. It has to be. I have to getâŚ
Silence for a while. He doesn't quite dare to ask - have to get... what? What is it that she's so determined to hold on for?
âŚhey. If you wanted to, say, make it up to me⌠could you hold my hand?
He blinks. âWill you be able to feel it?â
I donât know. But itâd be a nice thought.
â...okay. Sure, I can do that.â
Belphie drags the chair closer, untucks a corner of the blanket, and closes his fingers around a cold little hand. IK's voice murmurs a quiet thank you.
If he really squints, he can fool himself into seeing a tiny smile on her face.
"You'd better wake up soon."

Wider application of nature-based solutions (NBS) to climate change adaptation would deliver multiple societal benefits and contribute to biodiversity conservation. However, there is limited experience scaling solutions beyond local contexts. The lack of standardised methods for assessment and monitoring of NBS is a major challenge for replicating and applying them at a wider scale.
This briefing looks into applied assessment frameworks and the scaling potential of selected NBS, and how they may contribute to ecosystem restoration outside protected areas.

Hello, Andrew here. This blog article was sent to me and I can assure you that this is not correct information but a reaction likely of those who were involved. This information likely stems from previous MoM or HM themselves, I guess, seeing that they have been banned properly recently (which I am only stating because you already stated it yourself, otherwise I would not give away who is or is not banned)
When I took over I made it very clear in an NB post that the harrassment of users, witch hunt on site, and generally toxic and disrespectful behaviour needs to stop. Everyone is more than welcome to share opinions, but this was not that, this was simply insanely rude behaviour that was based on wrong information given by the MoM/HM to the other leaders of WoP, who then compiled their letter. Which is also the reason why after all of this these other site leaders were put back into their positions after everything was cleared up.
I have banned a total of 4 people from 800-900 actives at the time for continuing their disrespectful behaviour and outright slandering (one of them later on) despite my very clear warning in the article (I was surprised that it was only so few, but almost everyone was just glad to be able to enjoy the website again). I also made an effort to respond to each single comment transparently and open minded. Many of the people who removed content or joined that group hype have talked to me, told me their opinions, and gave me the opportunity to work on their missing trust together. I am on good terms with almost all of the old staff with maybe 5 exceptions (MoM, HM for being the reason this went down and one old staff on bad terms; the other two people I am neutral towards as I never spoke with them and don't know their thoughts) Every old staff member who reached out to me has their own experiences and opinioms and don't always agree with me, but they are more than valued and often play important roles in our staff as well - whether student or grad. In fact, I really enjoyed every single talk with them and appreciate anyone who reached out despite their fear of rejection, as that takes a lot of courage
The old MoM and HM were banned later on, yes, you can feel free to ask them for the exact reason I put in. The previous behaviour of theirs is unwelcome on site, and they created a horrible environment for people at the time this happened, just because of a "money grabbing" feature that was completely changed back anyway for other reasons. One of them was still logging in on alt for reasons I don't really understand, because they made sure everyone knew their hate towards Dan and the site. So why log in almost regularly even after almost a year? I guess I know why ,but that is just an assumption, so I will not voice it here
Aside from that, if you paid attention to the site development, you would also see that since then (but not because of that), new users got free VIP, people with jobs get discount, linking accounts gets a whole 50% discount, and such
I am mostly replying to clear some things up because I don't enjoy reactions that are based on false facts. I wanted to stay on WoP US as a temporary solution, but the community has been loving and welcoming, which was really unexpected considering the circumstances they went through
This is something that happened almost a whole year ago now, I even unbanned one of the 4 bans that took place when I took over, so technically it is only 3
I hope that this could clear up confusion and misunderstanding. I would like to see this message public because I am mostly writing it for the very few that might end up seeing it. Considering the nature of this post, you already made up your mind about me and that is okay. But I want to give my insight first hand, as I don't enjoy someone trying to slander my name based on more accusations of those people who were banned for false accusations in the first place
Magical regards,
Andrew Sutherland (WoP US)
By the way, I am only asking this anonymously because of privacy concerns regarding this account (never use Tumblr anyway)
Added in a later message: "Andrew here again, please add this xD I saw that you have made clarifications regarding there possibly being more to these accusations, my response was mainly aimed towards the person asking the question, but I do admit that I thought that that message was originally from you, the blog writer, and only saw your response later on (I am not used to tumblr and on phone it doesnt show all on one screen, oops). Just wanted to clarify that as it may explain some wording of mine!"
No hard feelings on my side, thanks for the clarification! If I can share both sides of the story, that is what I want to do and you've allowed me to share yours. It's greatly appreciated and I hope this clears the air a little bit.
NOTE: I can't verify if this person is who they say they are, the anonymous submissions are anonymous to me as well. I have no reason to doubt or suspect that it's someone else writing in their name, but I want to note that with anonymity there is a risk of abuse and impersonation. I don't think that's the case here though.

Can Brazilâs new carbon market turn tide on decades of exploiting indigenous peoples?
Brazil is poised to create a regulated carbon market, which would be one of the largest in the world.
Critics say agriculture excluded from the cap and trade system, though it is the highest-emitting sector.
The bill has safeguards allowing indigenous peoples to participate in the market as partners.
But there are fears a green gold rush will just put indigenous lands under greater pressure.
NBS Brazil Alliance released a good practice guide for consulting with Indigenous people on nature-based solutions.

Max talks to Peter Claus in a radio interview on rbb Kultur - Der Tag programme - highlights Part 1
Claus: The first thing I want to know is what attracted you to the role (of Matthias from âErnestoâs Islandâ)
Max: Of course I was very tempted to fly to Cuba. I found the prospect of actually visiting this country for myself and then working there very exciting. And before that, I met Ronald Vietz, the director and author of the film, who also comes from Mitte area in Berlin. And we share almost the same melancholy about the vanishing places in this area. For example the Tacheles, which for me was such a symbol of art and culture. You don't have to spend any money, you just met there without an appointment. And yes, we both miss it and the changes are so quickly. We don't want to cry over it, but maybe draw attention to it in our own way or commiserate with each other. Of course, I was very young at the time of âdie Wendeâ (NB: when the Berlin Wall came down), but I was probably socialized in such a way that you can say it's about human warmth or dealing with each other that isn't based on what advantage I have or what profit I make from it.
Claus: It is exaggerated in the film that Matthias is from the advertising industry. There's a really horrible scene where I got really really angry as a viewer where someone says this isn't about making the world a better place. It's not about making something nicer. We want to make money. And Matthias (eventually) learns that money is not everything, or so I believe.
Max: Naturally caricatures are presented in order to exaggerate, to achieve clarity. I think the advertising world is sometimes so perverted or fast-moving, that it has to work that way so that you are more successful and quicker than your competitor. Matthias was socialised in the East, but politically, he was so oveloaded by his parents, who were so politically committed that he might have become allergic and want to do things differently. And he ended up in advertising, where values ââare betrayed and that itâs not about people but about capital. And yes, that may be very clearly shown, but the film is not about what kind of career it is, but about his memory. The comparison between these faded memories, not all so glorified now or some were suppressed before because he had a difficult relationship with his mother. Thatâs why when the urn was sent to him, at first he can't do anything and doesnât want to go to Cuba to fulfil her wish. But reluctantly he goes on the journey, and it becomes an inner journey. Of course, he has to confront the past. The comparisons of what you think or what you mean and what you remember, is super interesting to really find out his identity. Where do I come from, where do I really come from? What do I really believe in? Why do I believe in it? Itâs a mind game too, couldnât this system we have now in this reunited city be something else? Why is this one system weâve just gotten help from everywhere? At least thatâs how it felt when âdie Treuhandâ (NB: the Trust Agency established by former GDR to re-privatise East German enterprises and farms) simply bought up 94% of farms and companies for a symbolic value. Couldnât there have been another solution? So because itâs not socialised capitalism or something like that? Or how about if I grew up in this country (Cuba). How does it feel when I am not allowed to leave the country? Even though Iâm in a very sunny, beautiful country with beautiful people, thereâs a scarcity economy, people are being monitored and you donât know whatâs going to happen next.
The interview is available here to listen or download

Nature-Based Solutions to Climate Change: A Path Toward Sustainability
Nature-based solutions to climate change (NbS) are emerging as essential strategies to mitigate the impacts of global warming. These solutions involve the use of natural processes and ecosystems to address environmental challenges, promote resilience, and reduce carbon emissions. As the world faces increasingly severe climate change effects, NbS are gaining recognition for its potential to create sustainable, cost-effective, and long-term solutions for both the environment and communities.
What Is Nature-Based Solutions?
Nature-based climate solutions encompass a wide range of strategies that rely on natureâs ability to provide vital ecosystem services. These solutions include protecting and restoring ecosystems such as forests, wetlands, mangroves, and grasslands, which naturally regulate the environment and store carbon. The idea behind NbS is to harness the power of natural systems to address climate change, rather than relying solely on technological fixes or engineering solutions.
By supporting ecosystem restoration, enhancing biodiversity, and improving land management practices, nature-based solutions to climate change can significantly contribute to reducing the impacts of global warming. These solutions work by promoting carbon sequestration, improving water management, enhancing soil health, and creating buffers against extreme weather events.
The Benefits of Nature-Based Solutions
Carbon Sequestration: One of the primary benefits of nature-based solutions to climate change is their ability to capture and store carbon dioxide (CO2). Forests, wetlands, and other ecosystems act as carbon sinks, absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere. Projects like reforestation, afforestation, and the restoration of peatlands help increase the natural capacity to sequester carbon, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Biodiversity Conservation: Nature-based climate solutions also play a critical role in conserving biodiversity. By protecting and restoring ecosystems, these solutions help maintain habitats for countless species. Forests, wetlands, and coral reefs support biodiversity by providing shelter, food, and breeding grounds for wildlife. Preserving biodiversity is crucial for ecosystem stability and resilience, ensuring the continued availability of services such as pollination, pest control, and nutrient cycling.
Flood and Drought Protection: Wetlands, mangroves, and coastal ecosystems act as natural buffers against floods and storm surges, reducing the impact of extreme weather events. Forests and grasslands help regulate water flow and mitigate the risk of both floods and droughts by improving water retention in the soil. These natural solutions are often more cost-effective than traditional engineering methods, such as building dams or sea walls.
Cost-Effectiveness: Compared to traditional infrastructure, nature-based solutions to climate change are often more cost-efficient. Ecosystem restoration projects, such as planting trees or rehabilitating wetlands, can offer multiple benefits, including carbon storage, flood protection, and enhanced biodiversity, all while being more affordable than large-scale engineered solutions.
Nature-Based Solutions and Carbon Credits
Nature-based solutions carbon credits are an important part of the growing global carbon market. These credits are awarded to projects that reduce or capture carbon emissions through natural processes. By investing in NbS projects like reforestation or wetland restoration, companies and governments can earn carbon credits, which can be traded or sold to offset their emissions.
For example, a company might fund a reforestation project, which captures CO2 from the atmosphere as the trees grow. The carbon sequestered by the trees can then be quantified and converted into carbon credits, providing a financial incentive for environmental protection. This market-based approach helps scale up the implementation of nature-based solutions to climate change, supporting both climate mitigation efforts and economic growth.
Conclusion
Nature-based solutions to climate change represent a sustainable and impactful approach to addressing the climate crisis. By protecting and restoring ecosystems, we can enhance biodiversity, capture carbon, and build resilience to climate impacts. Nature-based solutions carbon credits provide a unique opportunity to finance and scale up these efforts, allowing businesses and governments to take responsibility for their emissions while supporting vital environmental projects. As the world continues to confront the challenges of climate change, embracing the power of nature will be key to achieving a sustainable, resilient future.

Is there enough land on Earth to fight climate change and feed the world?
New Post has been published on https://sunalei.org/news/is-there-enough-land-on-earth-to-fight-climate-change-and-feed-the-world/
Is there enough land on Earth to fight climate change and feed the world?
Capping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius is a tall order. Achieving that goal will not only require a massive reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, but also a substantial reallocation of land to support that effort and sustain the biosphere, including humans. More land will be needed to accommodate a growing demand for bioenergy and nature-based carbon sequestration while ensuring sufficient acreage for food production and ecological sustainability.
The expanding role of land in a 1.5 C world will be twofold â to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and to produce clean energy. Land-based carbon dioxide removal strategies include bioenergy with carbon capture and storage; direct air capture; and afforestation/reforestation and other nature-based solutions. Land-based clean energy production includes wind and solar farms and sustainable bioenergy cropland. Any decision to allocate more land for climate mitigation must also address competing needs for long-term food security and ecosystem health.
Land-based climate mitigation choices vary in terms of costs â amount of land required, implications for food security, impact on biodiversity and other ecosystem services â and benefits â potential for sequestering greenhouse gases and producing clean energy.
Now a study in the journal Frontiers in Environmental Science provides the most comprehensive analysis to date of competing land-use and technology options to limit global warming to 1.5 C. Led by researchers at the MIT Center for Sustainability Science and Strategy (CS3), the study applies the MIT Integrated Global System Modeling (IGSM) framework to evaluate costs and benefits of different land-based climate mitigation options in Sky2050, a 1.5 C climate-stabilization scenario developed by Shell.
Under this scenario, demand for bioenergy and natural carbon sinks increase along with the need for sustainable farming and food production. To determine if thereâs enough land to meet all these growing demands, the research team uses the global hectare (gha) â an area of 10,000 square meters, or 2.471 acres â as the standard unit of measurement, and current estimates of the Earthâs total habitable land area (about 10 gha) and land area used for food production and bioenergy (5 gha).
The team finds that with transformative changes in policy, land management practices, and consumption patterns, global land is sufficient to provide a sustainable supply of food and ecosystem services throughout this century while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions in alignment with the 1.5 C goal. These transformative changes include policies to protect natural ecosystems; stop deforestation and accelerate reforestation and afforestation; promote advances in sustainable agriculture technology and practice; reduce agricultural and food waste; and incentivize consumers to purchase sustainably produced goods.
If such changes are implemented, 2.5â3.5 gha of land would be used for NBS practices to sequester 3â6 gigatonnes (Gt) of CO2Â per year, and 0.4â0.6Â gha of land would be allocated for energy production â 0.2â0.3Â gha for bioenergy and 0.2â0.35Â gha for wind and solar power generation.
âOur scenario shows that there is enough land to support a 1.5 degree C future as long as effective policies at national and global levels are in place,â says CS3 Principal Research Scientist Angelo Gurgel, the studyâs lead author. âThese policies must not only promote efficient use of land for food, energy, and nature, but also be supported by long-term commitments from government and industry decision-makers.â
