Why Natural Supplements for Adhd is Best
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder affects 4-5% of people. Due to the fact that many adults are ignorant of the disease, the figure is probably substantially higher. ADHD is a mental health condition characterized by impulsivity, difficulty sitting still, and trouble paying attention. The symptoms have an effect on life quality, making it harder to communicate, work, and interact with others.
How do supplements work to aid?
To treat the symptoms of this mental illness, some adults seek natural supplements for adhd adults. However, not everyone will benefit from or be able to take medication. Instead, medical professionals will advise medication, food, and activity adjustments. Some supplements can be beneficial for those looking for further symptom relief. Supplements give extra nutrients to enhance hormone and brain health.
Check your vitamin C intake
For the formation, growth, and repair of muscles, vitamin C is an essential acid. Controlling dopamine levels in the brain is one feature. Although it is uncommon to have a vitamin C deficiency, a supplement may help lessen the effects of ADHD. Remember that taking vitamin C should come at least an hour after taking an alkaline-based ADHD treatment.
ADHD may benefit from zinc
Zinc is a crucial mineral that promotes healthy immune function, metabolism, and wound healing. Additionally, this mineral aids in the synthesis of dopamine, which is important for mood, focus, and memory. Studies have found that people with ADHD have reduced zinc levels.

Human Rider Changes
Brom wasn't altered the way Eragon was, but in MIC I'm gonna say even the human Riders were altered by the bond, beyond the slightly more elfish appearance and pointed ears.
Over time Humans start getting the more pointed tooth shape that unaltered elves are born with. It takes FAR longer, but they also start to grow a very thin version of the controllable tapetum lucidum, but most can't use it the way elves can at will.
Human Riders also begin to get faster reflexes, larger energy stores, slightly higher than normal strength and endurance for their physiques, increased night vision in general, and I really really want to say longer periods of high neuroplasticity (ease of learning, adaptations, etc) going further into adulthood (though neuroplasticity IS seen in adults, it's not to the extent seen in childhood, but don't quote me on that I haven't read up on it very much lately) but I don't have a reason for that really. I feel like elves naturally keep a fairly high level of neuroplasticity, maybe some effect of dragons ancestral memories (god damn i wanna explore that too and for some reason I think it would lead me to papers and fish and birds and I'm....I'm not up for that just yet).
Magic use can speed up these changes, though it's still a very gradual process. One of the risk factors, however, is that while their strength is not terribly increased, there's still a posibility that their strength can be dangerous to them. Magic use is typically restricted to practice and training while being taught by masters so that explosive use of magic won't lead to a far faster increase in strength, before the bones have adapted to it.
Elves, when they have access to it, incorporate a leafy green called Tinleaf into their diets, along with a variety of (currently unnamed, let me cook) fruits and other vegge that grow in Du Weldenvarden and were brought to the Rider's island. Tinleaf and these other foods are high in dietary titanium, nickel chloride/sulfate, and zirconium silicate, all used in their bone structure which incoperates alloys that allow them to be so resistant to their strength without shattering bones by walking and hitting things. When out of the forest/not around sources of these food/plants, elves have supplements they can take if without natural sources for too long.
wait what was i talking about
OH.
These changes are why Arya is still a bit baffled/confused when she's with the Varden and learning of all these things these humans can't do/don't have going on with their bodies. Brom's changes were still early stage, but he still had some, and she just kinda assumed they were all like that. She was practically a kid at that point, confused why the books she read didn't mention any of that stuff, and then Caleb, Sam, Simon and the rest are having to explain a LOT.
I also found it both jarring and a nice reminder when reading Murtagh (shhhh look okay I just want the fancy cover one and then I'll finish it the ADHD is not good with these things I can't just sit and read anymore it's painful and I don't know why. You know what, send me a hurricane, knock my power out for a week, and I'll finish it before the deluxe release.) that Eragon is NOT the norm for human Riders. He is not human anymore. He is more elf. His strength and energy stores are FAR beyond what human Riders were capable of, unless i just haven't reached some plot twist yet.
I would say that it made the Forsworn make so much more sense, but a VAST majority of the Forsworn we know were elves. Human Riders could have had so much resentment towards their elven counterparts, even with their partners by their side and all the gifts the bonding gave them, it could have been almost crushing to see what elf Riders could do even without formal training.
I wanted/want to put Murtagh on somewhat more even footing after the war in MIC. Without Galbatorix's spells, he's still far more human than Eragon, but he's stronger than any other human man of his size, stature and physique, he's faster, he learns faster, and he can maintain and cast spells well beyond what a regular human mage can, even with training. With more Ancient Language under his belt, more time with Thorn, more practice, he would be (and is) well beyond anything any human could accomplish even with both training for decades and a wealth of natural talent.
Maybe at some point a more significant though still gradual increase in strength, speed, ect, all the elfy things, is introduced to the Rider Bond using the Word/the Name. Resentment from the non-elven students is something I worry about if other Rider species/races are left with nothing to put them at an equal level.
this got off the rails. whoops.

I have a question, a while back you were like 'rsd' doesn't exist, i always took it for granted that's what I had. I dug further and it seems pretty real to me? A lot of accounts are kind of anecdotal but it seems like it reacts the same as adhd people having extreme emotions to a lot of things. And at least for that I was able to find a lot of studies that back that up.
as stated by the bot on the ADHD subreddit:
"Please be aware that RSD, or rejection sensitivity dysphoria, is not a syndrome or disorder recognised by any medical authority.
It has not been the subject of any credible peer-reviewed scientific research. It is not listed in either of the top two psychiatric diagnostic manuals, the DSM or ICD. It has been propagated solely through blogs and the internet by William Dodson, who coined the term in the context of ADHD. This means that Dodson, his explanation of these experiences, and claims about how to treat it all warrant healthy skepticism."
here are some articles from the magazine dodson contributes to, ADDitude
Homeopathic Remedies for ADHD: Research and Reviews of Natural Treatments
Brillia: Homeopathic Supplement for ADHD Symptoms
Reiki: Could This Alternative Treatment Help Adult ADD?
etc and so on. i think you should take a better look at whatever studies you found

Help When Epilepsy Treatment Doesn't Work
Medically Reviewed by Christopher Melinosky, MD on May 12, 2023

What Is Refractory Epilepsy?
If your doctor says you have refractory epilepsy, it means that medicine isn't bringing your seizures under control. You might hear the condition called by some other names, such as uncontrolled, intractable, or drug-resistant epilepsy.
Your doctor can try certain things to help keep your seizures under better control. For instance, they might try different combinations of drugs or a special diet.
Your doctor may also put a device under your skin that sends electrical signals to one of your nerves, called the vagus nerve. This may cut the number of seizures you get. A Neuropace device is a reactive neurostimulator that detects seizures and shocks the brain to stop them.
Surgery that removes a part of the brain that causes your seizures may also be an option. With any of these treatments, you may still need to take epilepsy medicine throughout your life.
It's natural to feel anxious when the doctor tells you your epilepsy isn't getting better with the medicine you're taking. You don't have to go through it alone, though. It's important to reach out to family and friends to get the emotional support you need. You might also want to join a support group, so you can talk with other people who are going through the same things you are.

Tests and a Diagnosis for Epilepsy
Common Types of Seizures
Types of Epilepsy
Causes
Doctors don’t know why some people have refractory epilepsy and others don't. You can have refractory epilepsy as an adult, or your child might have it. About 1 in 3 people with epilepsy will develop it.
Symptoms
The symptoms of refractory epilepsy are seizures despite taking anti-seizure medication. Your seizures could take different forms and last from a few seconds to a few minutes.
You may have convulsions, which means you can't stop your body from shaking.
When you have a seizure, you may also:
Black out
Lose control of your bowels or bladder
Stare into space
Fall down suddenly
Get stiff muscles
Bite your tongue
Getting a Diagnosis
Your doctor has several ways to diagnose refractory epilepsy. They may ask you questions such as:
How often do you have seizures?
Do you ever skip doses of your medicine?
Does epilepsy run in your family?
Do you still have seizures after taking medicine?
Your doctor may also give you a test called an electroencephalogram. To do this, they'll place metal discs called electrodes on your scalp that measure brain activity.
Other tests might include a CT scan of your brain. It's a powerful X-ray that makes detailed pictures of the inside of your body.
You might also need to get an MRI of your brain. It uses magnets and radio waves to make pictures of your brain.
If you need surgery to treat refractory epilepsy, these tests can help doctors find out where your seizures are starting.
Your doctor will most likely want you to report your symptoms regularly. They may try several drugs at different doses.
Questions for Your Doctor
What might be causing my seizures?
Which tests are needed to diagnose refractory epilepsy?
Should I see an epilepsy specialist?
What treatments are available for refractory epilepsy?
What precautions should I take to avoid getting injured during a seizure?
Are there any limits on my activities?
Treatment
Medications. Your doctor may take a second look at the drugs you're taking. They may suggest another medicine, either alone or combined with other drugs, to see if it helps you have fewer seizures.
Many drugs can treat epilepsy, including:
Brivaracetam (Briviact)
Cannabidiol (Epidiolex)
Carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Tegretol)
Cenobamate (Xcopri)
Clobazam (Sympazan)
Divalproex (Depakote)
Dilantin (Phenytek)
Eslicarbazepine (Aptiom)
Felbamate (Felbatol)
Gabapentin (Neurontin)
Lamotrigine (Lamictal)
Levetiracetam (Keppra)
Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal)
Perampanel (Fycompa)
Potiga (Ezogabine)
Primidone (Mysoline)
Rufinamide (Banzel)
Tiagabine (Gabitril)
Topiramate (Topamax)
Vigabatrin (Sabril)
Zonisamide (Zonegram)
Surgery. If you still have seizures after trying two or three anti-epilepsy drugs, your doctor might recommend brain surgery.
It can help a lot if your epilepsy only affects one side of your brain. Doctors call that refractory partial epilepsy.
A surgeon removes the area of your brain that's responsible for your seizures.
It's natural to worry about brain surgery and to wonder if it will affect the way you think or if you'll seem like a different person afterward. Talk with your doctor about what to expect if you choose the surgery or if you don't, so you can weigh the risks and benefits. A lot of people who have the surgery say that getting free of seizures -- or at least making them less common and less intense -- makes them feel much better.
The surgeon usually operates on an area of your head that's behind your hairline, so you won't have noticeable scars.
After it's done, you'll probably need to stay in an intensive care unit of the hospital for a few days. After that, you'll move to a regular hospital room, where you may need to stay for up to 2 weeks.
You should take it easy for a while after you get back home, but you'll probably be able to return to a normal routine in 1 to 3 months. Even with the surgery, you might need to take seizure medication for a few years. You might need to stay on the drugs for the rest of your life.
Talk to your doctor about any side effects you might have from the surgery. You can ask them to put you in touch with other people who've had the surgery, so you can better understand what to expect.
Diet. The ketogenic diet helps some people with epilepsy. It's a high-fat, low-protein, no carb diet. You have to start it in a specific way and follow it strictly, so you need a doctor's supervision.
Your doctor will watch closely to see whether or when you can lower any of your medication levels. Because the diet is so specific, you may need to take vitamin or mineral supplements.
Doctors aren't sure why the ketogenic diet works, but some studies show that children with epilepsy who stay on the diet have a better chance of reducing their seizures or their medications.
For some people, a modified Atkins diet may work, too. It's slightly different from the ketogenic diet. You don't have to restrict calories, protein, or fluids. Also, you don't weigh or measure foods. Instead, you track carbohydrates.
People with seizures that are hard to treat have also tried a low-glycemic-index diet. This diet focuses on the type of carbs, as well as the amount that someone eats.
Electrical stimulation, also known as neuromodulation. This technology works directly on your nerves. It changes or controls nerve activity by sending electrical signals or medicine to a specific area. Methods include:
Cortical stimulation. Temporary electrodes are placed on the surface of your brain. The doctor sends a signal through them at a level low enough that you won’t notice. If it helps, they can be replaced with permanent electrodes for continuous stimulation.
Closed-loop stimulation. The doctor implants a device under your scalp and within your skull. It’s connected to two electrodes placed either on the surface of your brain, in the brain, or both. The electrodes record your brain waves. When the neurostimulator detects seizure-like activity, it sends a small electrical current to your brain that can stop, shorten, or maybe prevent the seizure.
Deep brain stimulation. The doctor implants thin electrodes deep into certain areas of your brain and a pulse generator under your collarbone. Wires under your skin connect the two. The pulse generator sends signals to disrupt abnormal patterns of brain activity.
Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). The doctor puts a device that looks like a heart pacemaker under your left collarbone. It connects to the vagus nerve in your neck through a wire that runs under your skin. The device sends a current to the nerve, which may cut down on the number of seizures you get or make them less intense.
Clinical trials. You may want to ask your doctor if you could take part in a clinical trial. These trials test new drugs to see if they're safe and if they work. They're often a way for people to try new medicine that isn't yet available to everyone.
Taking Care of Yourself
Stress can sometimes trigger seizures. Talking to a counselor is a great way to find solutions to manage your stress.
Try going to a support group, too. You can talk with people who know what you're going through and who give advice from their own experience.
What to Expect
Even though you have refractory epilepsy, it's still possible to get your seizures under control. It may be a matter of switching to a different treatment.
Your doctor may find a different drug combination that helps. Getting electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve means fewer seizures for about 40% of people who try it. And if a brain surgeon can remove the part of the brain that's causing seizures, the seizures may stop, or at least happen less often and become less intense.
Getting Support
As you are finding out what works best, you'll need a strong network of family and friends who can offer emotional support, especially if your seizures prove hard to control. Having a trusted person to listen to you can be a great comfort when you're going through something tough.
Ask your doctor for information on support groups in your area. You can also find out about support groups by going to the website of the Epilepsy Foundation.

Top 5 Natural ADD & ADHD Supplements to Improve Focus and Clarity
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affect millions of people worldwide, often leading to difficulty concentrating, staying focused, and maintaining mental clarity. While pharmaceutical treatments are common, many people are turning to natural supplements to help manage symptoms in a safer, holistic way.
At My Supplements Store, we offer a variety of natural ADD & ADHD supplements that support brain health and improve cognitive function. These supplements are designed to enhance focus, clarity, and overall mental well-being without the side effects often associated with prescription medications.
In this article, we will explore the top 5 natural ADD & ADHD supplements that can help you or your loved ones stay focused and clear-headed throughout the day.
Understanding ADD & ADHD
ADD and ADHD are neurological disorders that can affect a person’s ability to focus, control impulses, and manage hyperactivity. People with these conditions often struggle with:
Inattention: Difficulty staying focused on tasks or activities.
Impulsivity: Acting quickly without thinking about the consequences.
Hyperactivity: Constant movement or fidgeting, especially in children.
While medications are commonly prescribed to treat these symptoms, many individuals prefer natural ADD & ADHD supplements to support cognitive function and reduce the impact of these challenges.
1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids
What Are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats found in fish, flaxseed, and chia seeds. They play a crucial role in brain health, particularly in enhancing focus and reducing inflammation in the brain. Studies show that people with ADD and ADHD often have lower levels of omega-3s, making this supplement a beneficial addition to their routine.
How Omega-3s Help with ADD & ADHD:
Improves focus and attention: Omega-3s support brain function and cognitive clarity, making it easier to stay focused.
Reduces hyperactivity: Studies have shown that omega-3s can help reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity in children and adults with ADHD.
Supports overall brain health: Omega-3s are critical for developing and maintaining healthy brain cells.
At My Supplements Store, we offer high-quality Omega-3 supplements that are easy to incorporate into your daily routine, ensuring you get the support you need for better brain function.
2. Ginkgo Biloba
What is Ginkgo Biloba?
Ginkgo Biloba is a powerful herbal supplement that has been used for centuries to improve brain function and memory. It’s known for increasing blood flow to the brain, which helps enhance cognitive abilities such as concentration and memory retention.
Benefits of Ginkgo Biloba for ADD & ADHD:
Enhances memory and focus: Ginkgo Biloba boosts cognitive performance, making it easier for those with ADD and ADHD to retain information and concentrate on tasks.
Increases brain blood flow: By improving circulation to the brain, Ginkgo Biloba ensures that the brain receives the oxygen and nutrients it needs to function at its best.
Reduces mental fatigue: This herb is also helpful in reducing mental fatigue, which can be a common issue for individuals with ADD and ADHD.
Available in capsule and liquid form at My Supplements Store, Ginkgo Biloba can be a natural solution to help you stay focused and clear-headed throughout the day.
3. Zinc
Why Zinc is Important for ADD & ADHD
Zinc is an essential mineral that plays a key role in brain function, neurotransmitter regulation, and overall mental clarity. Research shows that children and adults with ADHD are often deficient in zinc, making supplementation critical for improving focus and reducing impulsive behaviors.
How Zinc Helps with ADD & ADHD:
Balances neurotransmitters: Zinc helps regulate dopamine, a neurotransmitter responsible for focus and attention. People with ADD and ADHD often have irregular dopamine levels, making zinc supplementation beneficial.
Reduces hyperactivity: Studies suggest that zinc supplementation can help reduce symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity, particularly in children.
Supports brain development: Zinc is vital for proper brain growth and cognitive function, making it an essential nutrient for managing ADD and ADHD symptoms.
You can find zinc supplements at My Supplements Store that are tailored to support both children and adults struggling with ADD and ADHD.
4. Magnesium
What is Magnesium?

Reduces anxiety: Many people with ADD and ADHD struggle with anxiety. Magnesium can help reduce feelings of anxiety and stress, improving overall mental well-being.
At My Supplements Store, we offer magnesium supplements in various forms, including capsules and powders, to help manage ADD and ADHD symptoms naturally.
5. Iron
Why Iron is Essential for Focus and Clarity
Iron is an important mineral that plays a key role in transporting oxygen to the brain and supporting neurotransmitter function. Individuals with ADD and ADHD, particularly children, are often deficient in iron, which can exacerbate symptoms such as inattention and restlessness.
How Iron Helps with ADD & ADHD:
Improves focus: Iron is necessary for cognitive function and attention span. Low iron levels can contribute to brain fog and difficulty concentrating.
Boosts energy levels: By increasing oxygen flow to the brain, iron helps improve energy levels and reduce mental fatigue.
Supports dopamine production: Iron is involved in the production of dopamine, the neurotransmitter responsible for regulating attention and focus.
Iron supplements from My Supplements Store can help address iron deficiencies and improve focus, clarity, and energy for individuals with ADD and ADHD.
How to Choose the Right Supplement for ADD & ADHD
When choosing the best natural supplement to manage ADD and ADHD symptoms, it’s important to consider the following:
1. Consult with a Healthcare Professional
Before starting any new supplement regimen, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider, especially if you or your child is already taking medications for ADD or ADHD.
2. Look for High-Quality Products
Not all supplements are created equal. At My Supplements Store, we provide high-quality, physician-recommended supplements that are carefully formulated to support brain health and improve focus.

Unlock Your Brain’s Potential with the Best Focus Supplement in USA
Unlocking your brain’s potential requires a top-tier supplement designed to sharpen focus, enhance memory and amplify cognitive function. In recent years, there has been a surge in the popularity of nootropics or so-called ‘brain-boosting’ supplements. Among these products, the Focus Plus supplement has been recognized as one of the best on the US market.
The key differentiating factor in Focus Plus is its main ingredient, biocitroid. This compound, a hybrid of bioflavonoids and citric acid, has been praised for its ability to stimulate neural activity and enhance concentration. The formulation of Focus Plus ensures that biocitroid is easily absorbed by the body so its benefits can be felt almost immediately. This makes it an ideal choice for individuals seeking a rapid improvement in cognitive function.
Although Adderall can temporarily enhance focus and reduce fatigue, it is a prescription medication originally designed for those with ADHD and comes with its own set of side effects and addiction potential. Clarigenz, on the other hand, is designed for healthy adults looking to optimize their mental performance and does not present the same risks linked with Adderall consumption.
Let’s circle back to what could be the best brain pill — the Focus Plus supplement. Biocitroid aside, this supplement incorporates a blend of other natural ingredients that work in synergy to foster mental clarity and cognitive endurance. It provides a holistic approach to mental enhancement, countering the effects of fatigue on the brain and providing critical support for optimal brain health.
However, it is essential to note that although supplements can boost your cognitive abilities, they should never replace a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management should be integral parts of your regime.
In conclusion, if you’re in the market for a brain-boosting supplement, Focus Plus stands as arguably the best choice in the US. With its unique blend of biocitroid and other brain-boosting ingredients, it offers a powerful, natural alternative to prescription drugs like Adderall and a surefire way to unlock your brain’s potential.

Our Dedicated Guide to What Are ADD Symptoms
ADD is also called Attention Deficit Disorder and it is not unlike ADHD. They both refer to a childhood disorder called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Attention Deficit Disorder is minus the hyperactivity. Their symptoms are so similar that they are often used interchangeably.
ADD children will display the difficulty with family, friends, and social relationships.
Following directions is often difficult. You can send them to their room to get dressed. When you go to check on them they haven't even started to get dressed or they may have just shoes and socks to get on. Something has taken his attention away from the task at hand. This can be problematic at home or in school.
Your child might become easily frustrated with things, have sleepless nights, and seem depressed. Distractibility can effect your child as well. They don't have the ability to control themselves. If this is the case, your child may be showing signs of ADD symptoms.
Either you or the school can request that certain tests that will help determine if it's ADHD. A physical will help rule out anything more serious. Your doctor may sit you down and discuss a number of different medications usually stimulants.
The problem with stimulants is that they can be addictive. They also have dangerous side effects such as sleeplessness, loss of appetite, and depression. When children have been on them for a long while they will have a high probability for depression and substance abuse as adults.
The good news is that are natural treatments that are safe and effective for your child.
They have nothing artificial in them. These supplements are made with a variety of herbs, vitamins, and minerals. They may not be effective for one child but may work for other children or work in the same way. You might have to try a few treatments until you find one that meets your child's specific needs.
The holistic approach treats the entire person - the physical, mental, and emotional can help ease add symptoms. The natural supplements must be made by a certified homeopath and may favorably your child's general health. Be sure the supplement you choose for your child is FDA approved to ensure quality and purity.
Natural supplements are not always of the same quality. This is the reason you must get them from a homeopathic practitioner and be approved as I said by the FDA. I suggest that you try to work with the school to help your child. If parents' and teachers' work together, children may respond even better to their treatment.

"It only took" and op goes on to list more care and effort than I've seen anyone get at a hospital (I know there are more nurses who do stuff like this, I've just never seen it)
You are a Saint and your patients are so lucky to have you. I hope you're able to inspire a legion to follow your example.
And something to add to non-pharmacological list of things that can help manage pain! Dopamine! Finding ways to increase the patient's natural dopamine levels. The candy you mentioned would help with this, and you mentioned watching TV too which can also help depending on what they're watching. Some other things that can help increase dopamine levels:
Looking at pictures of baby animals
Thinking about things they're looking forward to.
Listening to music they enjoy
Scents they enjoy, especially ones that remind them of happy memories
Introducing them to something new that they find interesting. Hobbies work really well and as an added bonus gives them something to occupy their time and concentrate on which also helps with pain management. Something like cross stitch, crochet/knitting are easy to do in bed. Maybe learning calligraphy or beading if they're able to sit up. Even something as simple as colouring can be fun for a lot of us adults.
Video games are a great and easy source of dopamine
You mentioned having conversations with your patients earlier and that's another potential dopamine source, especially if you're talking about things they enjoy
Reading or listening to a book or listening to a podcast (really any sort of entertainment)
Sunlight! Sitting in the sun for a bit to trigger the production of vitamin D can boost your dopamine levels (which in theory should mean thay a vitamin D supplement may also help?)
Laughter
Sincere praise
Deep breathing
Massage (which op also mentioned doing)
A ten second hug
Deep pressure therapy/deep touch therapy
If therapy animals are available and the patient is able to visit with one that's a huge dopamine booster
If a therapy animal is a no-go a soft plush animal (especially one containing a hot water bottle) to pet and cuddle with can be a good alternative
On the pharmacological side of things medications and supplements that boost dopamine levels can also help. For an example using a personal anecdote, my period cramps were severe enough my doctor prescribed me prescription medication (10mg toradol) to manage the pain and even they weren't always enough to get me pain free. When I was diagnosed with ADHD a few years back and started taking dexedrine suddenly my cramps didn't hurt nearly as much and I could control the pain with otc advice. The stimulants increased the level of dopamine in my system enough that my debilitating pain from menstrual cramps became far more manageable.
Now, I'm pretty sure stimulants aren't on the list of approved pain management tools (though they should at least be allowed in the toolbox!), but there are other pharmacological options that could help.
If there’s one thing I feel I can unambiguously brag about, it’s that I’m great with patients who are in pain crises. I’m tenacious and stubborn about lowering 10/10 pain to something more manageable. I got a patient in “25 out of 10” pain at start of shift down to a 4 by midnight and it only took opioids, Tylenol, muscle relaxants, ice packs, warm blankets, fresh coffee, repositioning, an abdominal binder I scrounged up, a phone call to the surgeon to get lidocaine patches ordered, and some serious chit chatting with the patient while we waited for all that to kick in. We didn’t end up needing IV medication, we didn’t have to increase opioids, we didn’t need to add any medication that would potentially delay discharge, and the majority of what I did is all stuff she can also do at home so it’s a sustainable pain management plan. This is my absolute favorite thing with nursing, I love love love managing pain, I know I talk about it a lot but it’s the most satisfying thing in the world. I love watching someone emerge from a horrendous haze of pain until they feel like a person again. Also I’m scheduling this to post well after my shift is done so that I don’t jinx anything, also while I was writing this post I had to take a quick break for two hours half way through because someone started having a seizure. My job is wild. I used to be a barista.

If you listen to Gary’s show, you know that he begins with the latest findings in natural approaches to health and nutrition. Starting this week, we will make some of those findings available each weekday to subscribers to the Gary Null Newsletter.
Blueberries can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women with high blood pressure
Diet plays key role in ADHD symptoms in children
Higher dose of melatonin improved sleep in older adults
Sound Waves Boost Older Adult’s Memory, Deep Sleep
Mulberry extract may ‘activate’ brown fat, help treat obesity
Psychedelic drugs promote neural plasticity in rats and flies
Blueberries can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women with high blood pressure
Colorado State University, May 19 2022
Consuming blueberries can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women with high blood pressure, according to new research by Colorado State University faculty member Sarah Ardanuy Johnson.
Consumption of 22 grams of freeze dried blueberry powder (equivalent to about 1 cup of fresh blueberries) mixed with water taken daily for 12 weeks improved the function of the inner lining of blood vessels (called the endothelium), according to preliminary findings of a study.
They performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-arm clinical trial in 43 estrogen-deficient postmenopausal women aged 45-65 years with elevated blood pressure or stage 1-hypertension. Johnson’s research team used freeze-dried blueberries to retain the polyphenols as much as possible, and to allow for the study to be double-blind, meaning that neither the investigators nor the study participants knew whether they were getting the treatment (blueberry) or placebo.
Johnson said the team observed increases in blood metabolites that are products of metabolism of anthocyanins (polyphenols found in blueberries that give them their blue color) and metabolism of polyphenols by the gut microbiome.
Diet plays key role in ADHD symptoms in children
Ohio State University, May 20, 2022
Here’s a good reason for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to eat their fruits and vegetables: It may help reduce inattention issues, a new study suggests.
Results showed that kids who consumed more fruits and vegetables showed less severe symptoms of inattention, said Irene Hatsu, associate professor of human nutrition at The Ohio State University.
The study that evaluated the effectiveness of the supplement showed that children who took the micronutrients were three times as likely to show significant improvement in their ADHD and emotional dysregulation symptoms than those who took a placebo.
Higher dose of melatonin improved sleep in older adults
Harvard University, May 19, 2022
In a small study of healthy adults aged 55 and older, 5 mg of melatonin increased total sleep time compared to a placebo.
Researchers conducted the study in 24 healthy, older adults to evaluate whether a high-doseor a low-dose melatonin supplement could improve sleep. The team found that the higher dose had a significant impact, increasing total sleep time compared to placebo by more than 15 minutes for nighttime sleep and by half an hour for daytime sleep. Results are published in the Journal of Pineal Research.
The body naturally produces the hormone melatonin, which helps regulate a person’s sleep-wake cycle with night and day. Melatonin levels peak at night. But among older people, levels of the hormone are often lower.
The team found that the low dose of melatonin did not lead to a statistically significant change in overall sleep time and that the changes that were seen were when sleep was scheduled during the biological day. Participants taking the 5 mg dose had a significant increase in total sleep time and sleep efficiency regardless of whether sleep was scheduled during the day or night.
Sound Waves Boost Older Adult’s Memory, Deep Sleep
Northwestern University, May 14, 2022
Gentle sound stimulation—such as the rush of a waterfall—synchronized to the rhythm of brain waves significantly enhanced deep sleep in older adults and improved their ability to recall words. This is according to a Northwestern Medicine study.
Deep sleep is critical for memory consolidation. But beginning in middle age, deep sleep decreases substantially, which scientists believe contributes to memory loss in aging.
The sound stimulation significantly enhanced deep sleep in participants and their scores on a memory test.
The degree of slow wave sleep enhancement was related to the degree of memory improvement, suggesting slow wave sleep remains important for memory, even in old age.
Mulberry extract may ‘activate’ brown fat, help treat obesity
Chinese Academy of Sciences, May 9, 2022
Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences say obesity can be treated by using a natural compound in mulberries that “activates” brown fat.The compound, known as rutin, was found to have weight loss properties in a study published in The FASEB Journal. Researchers say this may not only be able to help treat obesity, but related diseases associated with excessive weight gain.”The beneficial effects of rutin on BAT-mediated metabolic improvement have evoked a substantial interest in the potential treatment for obesity and its related diseases, such as diabetes,” researcher Wan-Zhu Jin said in a press release. During the experiment, supplemental rutin was added to the drinking water of both groups. Researchers observed improved glucose homeostasis in both cohorts. The investigators concluded the rutin improved metabolic functions in the mice. Scientists are confident similar remedies can be used to treat obesity in humans.
Psychedelic drugs promote neural plasticity in rats and flies
University of California Davis, May 12, 2022
Psychedelic drugs may have mind-altering powers in the physical sense, too. A new study, published in the journal Cell Reports, found psychedelics, specifically DOI, DMT, and LSD, can change brain cells in rats and flies, making neurons more likely to branch out and connect with one another. The work supports the theory that psychedelics could help to fight depression, anxiety, addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
“These are some of the most powerful compounds known to affect brain function, it’s very obvious to me that we should understand how they work,” says senior author David E. Olson, assistant professor at the University of California, Davis.
The idea that depression stems from imbalanced brain chemistry remains popular, but recent studies have revealed evidence that depression manifests as structural changes in brain circuits or atrophy in parts of the brain. This doesn’t mean neurons die off during depression, but that neurites retract. Neurites are the sections—either axons or dendrites—of a neuron that project out to bridge the gap between two neurons at the synapse to facilitate communication.
“One of the hallmarks of depression is that the neurites in the prefrontal cortex—a key brain region that regulates emotion, mood, and anxiety—those neurites tend to shrivel up,” says Olson. These brain changes also appear in cases of anxiety, addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
In their paper, Olson and colleagues tested psychedelics and showed some psychedelics tested, including LSD, proved to be more potent and efficacious in promoting neurite growth.
