Judai Yuki // Jaden Yuki
Age: 15-18+ (Verse/year dependent) Occupation: Student/Vagrant/Amateur League Duelist Aliases: Dropout Boy, Slifer Slacker, Aniki (from Sho), Jay (Also Sho), Schmaeden Schmuki, Number 1 (Ichiban), The Supreme King Date of Birth: August 31 Ethnicity: Japanese Nationality: Japanese Affiliations: Duel Academy (Student/Graduate), Slifer Red Dorm, Team HERO (Dueling League Team for post-school AU)
(AU Inspiration: An attempted amalgamation of manga and anime canon, first anime season was benign and mostly one-offs, attempted to give season 2 and 3 more of a cohesive feeling, though the Neo-Spacian contest arc and having Yubel also be Judai’s childhood card was a stretch, so tried to fix that)
Appearance Judai is tall, for a Japanese youth, with a thin frame, and wild brown hair. Almost always, he can be seen grinning, and this smile has been described as infectious by others, just as much as his pure spirit in regards to duel monsters. Despite not being especially muscular, Judai is still athletic, having preferred sports to sedentary hobbies before discovering Duel Monsters, and even still participating after he began dueling.
Before even his time as a Duel Academy student, Judai preferred wearing red shirts and jackets, usually accompanied with blue, white, or black jeans. As a Duel Academy student, Judai was fairly good about following, though he was fairly casual in his sense of dress, preferring to wear his blazer open, and shirts untucked. Following his graduation, Judai would continue to wear his Slifer Red jacket as a badge of pride for underdogs everywhere, but also to match with his idol Koyo, who also was known to wear a red jacket when dueling.
Personality A spirit of youth and vigor, Judai’s name is a fitting one, as he is always eager, and finds wonder in almost everything new. While he has this nature it is also worth noting that Judai isn’t an especially focused or disciplined young man, often finding academics, or really any sort of lecture even if they’re about something interesting to him, extremely dull; he was frequently known to sleep through lectures while at Duel Academy. Judai has always preferred to do things in a practical capacity, and is actually fairly intuitively capable.
Friendly and generally a good sport, Judai has a sincere love for dueling that only the most dire of situations, such as his year 3, would ever be able to weaken. Excited at the prospect of any strong duelist, Judai will seek out a game with any of them, and often in spite of himself will often have a blast, even when his own life is on the line. Judai has fun with any particular game format, though he strongly prefers to duel with actual cards, rather than in a digital simulation.
While prone to brief bursts of melancholy, especially when being defeated in a duel that he sorely desired to win, Judai is usually able to shake these off with ease, though the conditions under which he came back to, after having killed a number of people as The Supreme King. It was during such a time that Judai lost his love of dueling, for a time, and found himself only engaging in duels that the school expected of him, or that had some manner of dire stakes, or otherwise pertained to the different conspiracies involved with the Academia.
As a rule, Judai prefers to use HERO cards in his decks, having a certain connection to the heroes in American comics, as well as wishing to be like his mentor Koyo. While initially he used HERO cards based on American Heroes (The original Elemental HEROs, such as Clayman, Sparkman, Avian, and Burstinatrix, who were reminiscent of The Justice League and Avengers, before switching to the OmniHERO set that Koyo preferred, as well as Elemental HERO Earth, before eventually settling on a final deck type that made use of the Masked HERO cards, which were based on Super Sentai and Kamen Rider-style characters). Additionally, Judai has been known to tech in non-archetype cards into his HERO decks, that either support his playstyle, or have some sort of sentimental value, such as Winged Kuriboh (the only card that he has built dedicated decks around) or Honest.
Biography Judai Yuki was born to two parents in Kyoto Japan, a fair distance from Domino but still no less swept up in Duel Mania. Growing up, Judai had very little interest in Duel Monsters, instead preferring Baseball, and other sports. However, Judai also had a love for American comic books, his father being a businessman who often traveled abroad gave him frequent access as his father would buy single issues in bulk for the boy to enjoy. Judai’s mother would, while the boy was still in grade 3, pass on due to cancer, which would leave Judai to largely raise himself, as his father’s work wouldn’t often permit him to spend much time with his son.
Though it wasn’t a great situation to be in, Judai didn’t blame his father for this, as he saw it as a way to grieve, something which Judai did mutually by taking an even greater interest in sports.
One day, though, Judai would break his leg, and have to spend a length of time in the hospital to recover, as his dad was out of the country and the time, and having his usual caretaker stay with him full-time during that period, with a busted leg, was not doable. However, due to an overbooking the pediatric ward, Judai was forced to stay in the adult part of the hospital, a situation that was not popular with both Judai and the nursing staff.
For several days Judai was a headache for the adults around him, excepting for his neighbor, Koyo Hibiki, who found amusement in the boy’s antics. After a short time, the young man and his elder sister began talking to the young man, wanting to learn more about him. Experiencing an almost immediate connection with the man, Judai found it fun to get into hi-jinks with the man, who despite being sick was still willing to be a gently-handled accessory. As Judai got to know Koyo better, he found out that the man was a famous Professional Duel Monsters player, frequently regarded as the current best, in fact. While this impressed the other adults enough to rarely contradict or order him around, Judai didn’t much care for cardgames, preferring baseball, and treated the man the same as any other adult.
It was thanks to this that the two were able to easily become friends, and though it took time, Koyo’s sister, Midori Hibiki, had brought some videos of Koyo’s duels. In these videos he saw how cool Koyo truly was when he dueled. Wishing to be like the older boy, Judai began playing against the man, learning the game, though never beating Koyo in a single duel. As time went on, even though Koyo had already retired, Judai lamented that the man had decided to retire with his most recent game. But once Judai was released, he continued to visit every day, and the day before Koyo’s release from the hospital, he told Judai to meet him for their final duel, to build his greatest deck, and that it’d be their last.
Arriving at the established time, other guests and staff from the hospital had gathered to watch the game. It had become something of an event for those who knew Koyo and Judai, and it was at this time that Midori would give Judai his first duel disk. As the duel started it was plainly apparent that the deck Judai had built was the most fitting, given that it would be their last game, as Yuki had elected to use an Elemental HERO deck.
In an intense final duel, Judai would find out after his loss that not only would Koyo not retire, but he’d hold his position at the top of the dueling world, waiting for Judai to someday meet him there. But in Koyo’s next match he would collapse, due to a curse inflicted on him by Traegodia, and be placed into critical care; eventually slipping into a coma. As a parting gift, before they’d spend an extended time away from one-another, Midori would give Judai Koyo’s deck, including his one-of-a-kind Elemental HERO Earth, and his most prized card, the Winged Kuriboh. On some level, even if Koyo couldn’t continue dueling, the spirit in Koyo’s Winged Kuriboh, and the heroes in his deck, still desired to, and it would disrespectful of her brother’s memory for them to simply gather dust because he can’t use them.
Judai, at age fourteen, would enroll into Duel Academy, after arriving late for practical exams, and dueling Professor Crowler, instead of regular exam proctors, as an intended punishment for his tardiness, and Crowler’s attempt at pruning the boy who had tested poorly on the written exams from attending. With Koyo’s superior deck, Judai was able to trounce the more experienced duelist with a combination of plays that he’d seen from Koyo’s duels on video, as well as some key draws, including Winged Kuriboh.
During his exams, Judai would meet several other students, such as Chazz Princeton, Alexis Rhodes, Sho Marufuji, and Bastion Misawa. He would become fast friends with the latter three, and due to his current ownership of Koyo’s deck become a bitter rival with Chazz, who idolized Koyo and had spoken to him directly before his last pro duel. Due to his poor written tests, and despite beating the head of Obelisk Blue’s dorm who was considered the most seasoned professor at the academy in terms of dueling, Judai was placed into the Slifer Red dormitory.
Throughout Judai’s first year at Duel Academy he would be largely undefeated during the regular term, dueling many of the Obelisk Blue students, who were mostly compromised of second and third year upperclassmen, as well as a student teacher who cheated, and Chazz Princeton himself (though without his signature card).
At the end of the year, though, Judai would enter the Genex Tournament, an event put together by headmaster Shepherd upon his return from abroad, with the two top students, Atticus Rhodes and Ryo Marufuji. While easily breezing through the preliminary event, which essentially involved dueling other students at the academy and taking their medals as per an ante situation. When reaching the finals, Judai would first duel Bastion Misawa, beating him in their rematch, before moving onto the finals for his rematch with Chazz. However, Judai would lose this duel, as Chazz made exceptional use of his signature card Light and Darkness Dragon. This was Judai’s first loss using Koyo’s deck.
In order to investigate some sort of conspiracy surrounding the tournament, particularly some of the American transfer students that had been brought along by Shepherd for the event, Judai would duel against possessed students, under the control of an Egyptian spirit Traegodia, that was somehow connected to his partner Winged Kuriboh. In which would follow Judai and friends dueling a group of individuals who were corrupted by this, as well as duels among a group of transfers from the United States campus who would participate in a special “Elites Tournament” event. Eventually, Judai and Chazz would duo duel against Traegodia when he took over the body of Duel Master America’s headmaster, winning and defeating the spirit, though resulting in the loss of Jaden’s and Chazz’s card spirits, Winged Kuriboh and Light and Darkness Dragon.
At the end of Judai’s freshman year he would return to Japan over the Summer, retooling his deck over the Summer, feeling that he had failed Koyo by losing with his deck, shifted gears to a different type of HERO deck, specifically Masked HEROs. During his Summer break, Judai would find out that defeating Traegodia woke Koyo up, and it gave Judai the opportunity to return his mentor’s cards.
Through Judai’s second year a conspiracy would arise surrounding the pro duelist Aster Phoenix, a Dual Academy America student who Judai had dueled and lost to in the Elites Tournament the year before, as well as a mysterious seer named Sartorious, who were working together to convert people around the earth, and those at Duel Academy, to a mysterious cult regarding some sort of dimensional White Hole, that created energy and light, rather than what a black hole does. Due to the graduation of Ryo and Atticus, Chazz and Judai were regarded as the top duelists, and so these two would make examples of them, by converting Chazz to this cult, and Aster defeating Judai not long after defeating Ryo on the pro tour.
Following Judai’s loss he would flee into the wilderness of the island, as through a hypnotism on the part of Sartorious, Judai was no longer able to see the faces of his cards, rendering him unable to play, which further gave him a sense of detachment from his cards, especially after losing his partner Winged Kuriboh.
While wandering in this wilderness, Judai would experience a moment of astral projection, as a series of duel spirits based on a set of cards he’d designed, and conveniently forgot, for a contest run by Seto Kaiba that would feature those cards being sent into space. These cards would explain that they were given sapience by a gentle darkness, an opposite to the hostile light that Sartorious had been corrupted by, and he’d need to help them and the gentle darkness to defeat this evil force.
With these cards, Judai would challenge Aster to a rematch, and as he drew his cards, his ability to read their faces would be restored steadily, and their abilities, along with his new HERO partner Elemental HERO Neos would allow him to turn the tables on Aster, and defeat the pro.
Upon Aster’s defeat, the Neo-Spacians were able to clear his mind of the hostile light, and cause Aster to have his own side-story regarding his own personal identity or something dumb that was longwinded and boring.
In the second Genex tournament, Judai would duel against his friends who had been swallowed by The Light, either defeating them and allowing them to return to their true state, or through trickery, appealing to their true character to allow them to overcome The Light. Despite this, and even defeating Chazz who would go on to win the tournament a second time, Judai would choose to not enter the final stages of the tournament to finally defeat Sartorious.
Though, over his Summer, Judai would withdraw, not practicing his dueling as much, and even developing something of an aversion to the game, after spending so much time essentially only dueling for stakes that involved the souls of others, or the fate of the entire world.
Going into his senior year Judai was also the only remaining upperclassman IN Slifer Red, though this solitude didn’t especially bother him, he admitted to Sho that after graduation he was contemplating retirement from Duel Monsters altogether. And as the year progressed, many of his friends would grow worried for the young man, until it reached a peak at roughly the mid-term. An evil card spirit that had been battered by both The Light of Hatred and The Gentle Darkness used the weakened heart of Judai to transport the entirety of Duel Academy Island, or rather the souls of its students, into a dimension of Duel Monsters created by the Chaos Wars, as they were referred to.
This card, Yubel, had a certain connection to Judai through a past life, and as his spirit had weakened they possessed him in order to take action as The Supreme King, evidently a version of Judai from another universe that had been their lover in another life. Yubel, controlling Judai, manipulated a series of events that forced his friends to duel for their lives, engaging in Shadow Duels that would kill a number of key players, such as many of the American transfer students, whose souls would only be returned to them in the event that the Supreme King was defeated. And even upon The Supreme King’s ultimate defeat in a duel with Sho, the spirit would then transfer to Jesse Anderson, one of the transfer students who used the one-of-a-kind Crystal Beast monsters to duel, forcing Judai to then duel Yubel for the fate of him and his schoolmates.
Though he had no way of possibly defeating Yubel’s Dark Rainbow Dragon, Judai was able to, in a last ditch effort, use the Super Polymerization card that Yubel had created as a means of fusing their dimension to the real-world as a way of fusing them and Judai together as one soul. It was through this that the gentle soul of Judai would be able to keep the warrior Yubel in check, while Yubel was able to remain connected to the one they wanted to be with most of all.
At this point, following the duel immediately, the students of Duel Academy would return in a meteor shower, returning to their regular lives, believing that Judai had sacrificed himself, before the Slifer student himself also returned roughly a month later.
As classes continued on, Judai found himself more scarred by the incidents than before, essentially having killed his classmates, and now sharing bodies with the person who had caused him to do these things, it took roughly a semester of events, including Judai’s investigation into a mysterious group of duelists who were using Shadow Games to steal souls of powerful players and card spirits, so as to resurrect what they believed to be a god, before he could even come to grips with tolerating Yubel, by playing them in his deck, and fusing them with Neos to make Neos Wiseman, a representation of what Judai and Yubel could accomplish together.
Eventually, Judai didn’t even compete in the third Genex tournament, leaving Chazz to win it in a three-tournament sweep, an impressive record that would be unbreakable for the rest of Duel Academy’s three-year structure, having lost the fun in dueling. However, the echoes of Winged Kuriboh drew Judai to a room, an old display from Judai’s first year that held a copy of Yugi Muto’s deck. The spirit drew Judai to the deck, and when he touched it, the remnants of Winged Kuriboh’s spirit displaced Judai’s soul across time, to just before the Grand Championship arc, in front of Solomon Muto’s game shop.
Running into a young Yugi Muto as he was on his way to school, an excited Judai challenged the legend to a duel. As the game progressed, Yugi could tell that something was causing Judai to hold back, and not put his whole heart into it, and thus they dueled in such a way that the game was more fun, not worrying so much about absolutely dominating, but having a good game, and as this progressed, Judai’s spirit and vigor for dueling returned to him!
Despite the match ending in a loss for Judai, he was able to return to his own time, and leave a letter for each of his friends, promising to someday see them again, and that when that day came, they could even have a duel!
Following this skipped graduation, Judai would travel the world, dueling in the minor circuits, as no large sponsors had picked up the largely inactive third year to enter the majors, dueling with others, and even connecting to other duelists who used HERO decks around the world, joining a team for Team-based dueling leagues known as Team HERO.
Two years after his graduation Judai would appear at the top of the world, with Koyo, finally ready to duel his mentor, facing off against the world champion’s Heroes with his own.
Abilities and Skills -Physical Ability: Judai was an extremely physically active youth, and was a gifted athlete. This is evident in even the physical education courses of Duel Academia, in which he outperforms many of his classmates, with only a few rivals in these specific courses. This is further enhanced when Judai fuses with Yubel, becoming able to leap from building to building, without any apparent shift in his biology or physiology. -Dueling Skill: Judai is a talented duelist, particularly skilled in the use of fusion techniques. Particularly he specializes in using monsters in combos to execute these fusions, but then later shifts to a style that relies on Mask Change for his Masked HERO cards, and then later becomes versed in Contact Fusion, and the individual strategies of the Neo-Spacian cards. Generally, Judai is accepted as being skilled in the use of any HERO card, though he stops using OmniHERO cards after returning Koyo’s deck. Despite being a freshman, Judai was able to dominate the rest of the Duel Academy Japan’s student body in duels, only losing to his rival Chazz. By adulthood he’s able to meet his mentor, and the multiple-time world champion Koyo, in a final match of The Duel Monsters World Tournament. On a technical level, Judai is especially adept at adapting to the strategies and cards of opponents, turning losing situations into his win conditions, or developing win conditions that prevent his opponents from achieving their own, such as with his Masked Heroes. --Drawing Luck: Being especially lucky, Judai Is always able to draw a card he sorely needs, rarely drawing the wrong card, unless it doesn’t matter. When Judai is beaten, it’s never because of a poor draw.
Superhuman Powers and Abilities -Human-Duel Spirit Hybrid: After using Super Polymerization, Judai and Yubel become a single entity, essentially placing him in a unique position where he is neither totally human, or totally duel spirit. As a result of his fusion with Yubel, he can enhance the duel monsters that he materializes using The Gentle Darkness. Additionally, through Yubel, he can sense the thoughts and emotions of others, and see the future, so long as it protects him from other supernatural powers, such as Hypnosis and Nightshroud. While using these powers, his eyes become the same as they were when he was the Supreme King, with one orange and one teal eye. He is also able to use Yubel’s power to project his voice beyond the range, and at a volume louder than, normally physically possible. -The Gentle Darkness: The Gentle Darkness is a semi-sentient force that is meant to counteract the Destructive Light, bringing about peace and serenity in its wake. Evidently The Supreme King was previously linked to this force. Through The Gentle Darkness now inhabiting Judai’s body, allowing it to act through him in certain situations, he can see, heard, and control Duel Monster Spirits. Additionally, he becomes able to manifest these monster spirits physically, and grant them their powers, without tapping into his Supreme King abilities.
Weaknesses and Limitations -Laziness: Judai is not a very enterprising young man, except for in the fields of dueling and athletics. Even in the case of the former, while attending a school that was solely dedicated to the studying of his favorite card game, he found himself sleeping through many lectures and the like, with grades that only narrowly allowed him to move onto subsequent grade levels, but still low enough to keep him in the Slifer Red dorm, in which there were no other third-year residents besides him. -Short Attention Span: Notably, Judai has a difficult time staying on a single subject for long stretches of time. Even during duels, when lengthy card effect descriptions or combos can easily bore Judai, especially if they aren’t particularly flashy. This can often result in him forgetting how they work, until experiencing them first-hand, in which case, he begins to commit them to memory.
Equipment and Support Gear -Judai’s Decklists Here -Duel Academy Uniform (Slifer Red): The standard Duel Academy uniform, Judai wears it even into adulthood, though he will often change the pants into a color that doesn’t so easily stain, preferring to reserve the full look for tournaments and title duels. -Duel Academy Duel Disk (Slifer Red): A standard duel disk given to the students of Duel Academy. Initially it was a 3rd Generation Duel Disk without any special modification or decoration, though in Judai’s senior year the student body were given prototype 4th Generation Disks, which didn’t require any special hologram projectors be used external to the disks themselves, that came with special house-color-based lining. -Duel Disk (Standard Model, 2nd Generation): A gift from Midori Hibiki, this was Judai’s first duel disk that he used in his duel against Koyo, and all duels leading to his time at Duel Academy. This is a standard 2nd Generation Model released after Battle City to the general public. They were notably considered expensive.

Joselia "Jo" Hughes is a Black 1.5-generation Cuban-Jamaican-Guyanese-American writer and artist from the Bronx. She lives with Sickle Cell Disease (HBSC) and ADHD.
Where did you find the 3rd grade poem? How did you decide to include it? What other collage or found art/poetry do you like?
The 3rd grade poem was from a collection of student works, Witch’s Brew, released by my grammar school, Horace Mann. I have two issues from 2nd and 3rd grades. Both of my works were quartered in the “Fantasy” section. There was another section called “Feelings” and, I think, The Sky more accurately suggests a feeling. Scratch that: it explicitly discusses a feeling. This misidentification by academic administration/curatorial staff (which doubles as a political demonstration) is telling. I think it explains a lot about the root confusion between what I have felt/feel to know as Experientially True versus what I’m told to know as The Truth. When considering the emotional and material lives of Black femmes, we must remember Black femmes have been historically disallowed, disavowed and dispossessed of creative virtuosity. Too often, we are strapped in the monolith of stereotyped caricature dictated by the manifested destiny written into commandments/constitution of misogynoir. Black femme virtuosity is reappropriated, regesticulated and worn like some earned bloody body wisdom by the Opps (Oppressive Forces). While I didn’t have those terms as a child, I experienced the consequences of misogynoir in conjunction with dis/ableism and classism, which aren’t separate entities but necessary vices that amplify asphyxiation. Is disabled Black femme loneliness only permissible when classified as fantasy? That shit don’t sit right in my spirit. I also used the poem because the title is Witch’s Brew and my zine, Heartbeats But No Air (HBNA), is a kind of exorcism. A few years ago, I pieced together that my maternal grandmother was a covertly practicing Bruja. With the widening reclamation of ancestral wisdom by BIPOC, in an effort to decolonize our existences, I was tapping into that tender tendon of wisdom.
Understanding my grandmother’s practice reminded me that she wanted to name me Darthula Verbena (daughter of God, enchanting and medicinal). I started referring to myself as DV, my pre-name, and inspected my childhood. That’s been a remarkable endeavor. I had to teach myself to play again. Through play, I learned how to feel. Learning feeling meant learning the qualitative and quantitative nature of the labyrinth of my thoughts. Once I learned some of the turns of the labyrinth, I could feel to know how to navigate the terrain without fear and engage in the rigorous study that’s always characterized my central self. Play is a code switch. I often think of code switching as a means to subvert/refigure power differentials. To hide in plain sight by retooling “seeing” to perception/sensing. How much are we perceiving/sensing? How often do we mean perception/sensing yet default to “sight”? Perception/Sensing adds dimensionality that isn’t always articulated with and through “sight” and “seeing”. Ralph Ellison’s identification of “lower frequencies” and J. Halberstam’s configurations of Low Theory do this work. I toy with these multiplicities in the zine. I work low to the ground which means I work close to my heartbeat, my central drum. I work meta; I go beyond. I like to sprinkle codes, tickle clues, tuck in questions, sew in wisdoms so I know what I’m doing, why I’m doing it, who I’m doing it for and to always remember the fun of FLiP (Feeling, Learning, iPlaying).
Some of the works/folks who’ve helped me FLiP are Dana Robinson’s meditative and piercing collages; Zulie’s mind bending, heart wrenching, time suspending zines; Nikki Wallschlaeger’s I HATE TELLING YOU HOW I REALLY FEEL; Seth Graham’s tattoo practice/paintings/unbounded love of outer space (they’ve done 3/4 of my tattoos); Amanda Glassman’s razor sharp poetry and encyclopedic curiosity; L’Rain's music has literally helped me scale the side of a mountain and carried me through hospitalizations; KT PE Benito’s multidisciplinary liberation praxis and collaborative friendship; Zoraida Ingles' holistic creative prowess (a conversation with her is why Heartbeats But No Air, as a title, exists); and Marcus Scott Williams’ writings/video/sculpture work that readily embraces the persistence of ephemera. This isn’t an exhaustive list—I have a solid library of books and papers and zines and tunes at my crib—but, genuinely, I’m inspired by everyone I’ve had the honor to encounter.
There are themes of love and race and beauty and culture and self-transformation in this book. Paired randomly, some pieces may not make as much common sense together, but as a whole, it feels powerful and cohesive. What was the structuring process like for this chapbook? Each zine is different, right?
It is one zine. I find it cool that you consider HBNA a chapbook made up of many zines. The word chapbook had never crossed my mind. I walked into the process with DIY zine logic and HBNA was printed using office photocopiers. I think the feeling of cohesion you mention is what happens when you witness a lot of parts of one person. In this case, you’re witnessing a lot of different parts of me, my thoughts, my actual labor. Whole is the goal ‘cuz people are whole. I am whole. I consider HBNA a single revolution of myself— one big twirl around a fire, a sun. I was in a very strange place. I’d alleviated, with the help of acupuncture and CBD products, a significant amount of the chronic pain I’d been experiencing since August 2014. I fell around love with someone and rose in love to myself (thanks Ms. Morrison and Ms. Stanford!). I was in an unfamiliar painless trance. I created and tinkered with all of those pieces during a very short period of time from Summer 2017 to Summer 2018. HBNA was originally named Girl Pickney (the prose pieces were written under that moniker) and before that NggrGrl (a nod to Dick Gregory). I wrote the poetry in an even shorter period of time—March to July 2018—and the poems are actually part of a full length collection that I wrote in those four months. I didn’t decide on the layout of the zine until I was with two friends formatting it for printing two days before I was going to read at The Strand and sell it. I kept all the pages, the puzzle pieces, in a folder. A lot of book structuring, for me, is based on emotional knowing—when to slap, when to pound, when to breathe, when to confuse, when to stun, when to anger, when to tell, when to soothe. All of my structuring decisions are fly about to get swatted dead but fast enuf to fly away first intuitive. If I’m channeling that intuition, I know I’m in running in the proper heat and lane.
You were in an MFA program at one point. How does this chapbook contrast with your style from before that program and during that program? Did that program have an effect on your writing? This doesn’t feel like the most MFA-y writing, which is why I ask, and which I mean as a compliment.
I’ve attended a few schools. I’ve completed fewer than I’ve attended. Until my late 20s, I was shy and desperate for people, those noun-verbs, to stay. This desire for people to stay meant I spent an inordinate about of time and energy relegating the difficult parts of myself to the margins of the margins and continually stepped into social/academic shoes that did not fit. HBNA was the first fitting of the bespoke shoes I can now emotionally afford to make. The first copies I sold had typos! I misspelled my own pre-name and that’s exactly what I needed to happen. It needed it to happen because I’m full of mistakes and yet! I try! I understand HBNA as a radical refutation of embarrassment. Depending on when you purchased a copy, you’ll see I used white-out to make a few corrections. No two zines are the same; only 80 copies exist. I’m printing 12 more copies (they’ve already been claimed) and then on to new pastures! The zine was printed in three different places (two offices I don’t work in and a local printing shop) and I was lugging around 800 individual sheets of paper that I stapled, numbered, indexed and decorated with stickers by myself…standing barefoot on the carpet of Staples in Co-Op City, listening to Ryo Fukui’s Early Summer on repeat until I finished and then I jetted to the Strand to read. HBNA was how I knew to embody my physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual labor. I’m a goofball with zany ideas, an indifference to external definitions of relevancy, sickled cells and a lot of chaotically grounding love. I write for myself first. Of the school lessons I did receive and learn, there weren’t many I didn’t later disassemble to rebuild, freak unfamiliar or completely misunderstand. J. Halberstam calls this “failing”. Rejigging failure has been such a gift to me. How wonderful! A failure AND still happening? Fuck yeah! I was a wildly uneven student whose knees buckled at mere thought of rigid academic authority. After years of shame and refusal, I can finally admit I am an autodidact. I intentionally get lost and navigate in and to the direction of my own senses. School didn’t teach me to write for myself and that’s who I always have to write for. If that’s selfish, so be it. I am my first audience. If I’m sus of me, then me and myself got foundational problems. I know my writing is non-institutional and that lack of institutional alignment and support, while scary as shit, pushes me to make and take risks to believe beyond the immediate demands/plans/remands of whatever external force I am facing. My writing is constantly colliding into A New I can’t predict. I’m fully committed to unfolding, unraveling, for curiosity’s sake.
What’s a typical day like for you?
My day to day life is as predictable as it is unpredictable. I am formally unemployed and have been for awhile. I live on very little cash and am kept afloat because my mom is a gem and hasn’t kicked me out. My days are 100% influenced by the weather and I spend a good portion of my time negotiating how to minimize the occurrence of vaso-occlusive crises and other complications from the disease I have, Sickle Cell. Between January 2018 and January 2019, I was hospitalized three times. Each hospitalization was about a week long and recovery took significantly longer.
Here’s a sketch of what I call a really great day: I wake up before 10. If the night’s sleep was especially restorative, I can comfortably rise at 8. Depending on how my body feels, depending on how much pain I’m enduring, how much fatigue is shrouding/clouding my faculties, I decide if I have the energy to take a shower. I do the bathroom routine, get a cup of orange juice and take my medications (Endari, sometimes Adderall, Folic Acid). I use the first hours of wakefulness to connect with loved ones via text-phonecalls-DMs and browse the internet for headlines-news-updates-new smiles. I wear my fits comfortable. I call comfort my uniform—upend normcore to body sensible—sweatpants/leggings, pullover, one earring (although I’m leaning to pairs again), handy dandy baseball cap and sneakers. I keep it simple. If the weather is aight—if it isn’t too cold or too hot and if precipitation is mostly at bay and air quality isn’t extremely poor—I go outside and get some living exercise. When able, I take extremely long walks. Once I walked over 50 miles in a week! It’s my preferred form of meditation. Walking/body movement grounds my ADHD symptoms more effectively than stimulants, strengthens my body for potential Sickle Cell episodes and satiates my unyielding need to feel connected to other people. I’m at my best when outside and happening. Illness can create an inescapable interiority. Inside reminds me of the hospital and my relationship with the hospital is, at best, fraught. Walking allows me to follow myself. I engage in peek-a-boo with babies, witness accidents, smile at strangers, duck the eyes of leering people and learn how to love differently too. I go to playgrounds and swing. I take photos and notes. If I’ve got a lil cash, I ride the subway for fun. I poke into shops, admire graffiti and other street signs. I have one woman dance parties on sidewalks. I rest on park benches and read. I pick up grub from hole in the wall spots—you know—I live my life and embrace as much as I can while centering kindness and gentle flow. The walks are my favorite part of my job, which I do not have. When I return home, I rest then get to crafting which I sometimes call spelling. Crafting/Spelling can be anything from adding to my I-Box, spitting verses from the abstract (poetry), spinning short stories, detailing journal entries, doodling, painting, knitting, researching & studying, dancing & stretching, bugging out on Twitter or reading. My bedroom is my studio so I work small yet widely. I intentionally provide myself with many targets so I can a) keep my thoughts and feelings flowing b) find the connections between all of my actions and c) mitigate the stress that sits in the heart of a lone project. I am a multifaceted, multifauceted being. Why not turn on all the taps?
The more long form prose pieces in here have the feel of nice punch-y flash fiction. Are you writing a fiction collection without poems and collage in it? I want to read that, too :)
Hahaha! You’re onto me! Yeah, I am writing another book of poems, a manifesto zine and a collection of fiction. I’ve been writing a collection of fiction since 2012. I had a lot of the difficultly writing the fiction because I was too attached to the title, the characters I conceived needed to grow up with me, and I experienced many years of unremitting and improperly managed mental and physical illness. I was holding onto and telling lies. The shame woven into those lies kept me silent and scared. All of that shit needed to get integrated or dropped. I couldn’t enter the prose/fiction I’m currently writing without learning how to survive myself and the world and bottom-belly-believe in survival too. I’m getting there— healing with primary, secondary and tertiary intentions. Won’t say much about the fiction pieces of than: ~15 stories, lyrically speculative fiction, capital B Black, disabled, and queerfemme parables of creation and destruction and maintenance. My website is in flux but I do readings and performances. Hit me up on Instagram , Twitter or email me at [email protected]. Might take a minute for me to respond because I’m thoughtful yet questionably organized. Now go play, ya’ll!
Unintentionally wrote a poem in the interview. I call it A.B.B in Lieu of A.B.C

Interview - 2D Star Vol.11
Big thanks to @yukimuzic for the scans. If you were to use and/or repost this page, please ask her first.
Q. It’s Hi!Superb's first appearance in MY★STAR, isn’t it~ First of all, please introduce yourselves.
LEO: Yes, so I’ll go first! I’m Leo! Hi!Superb’s leader, the positive king from Naniwa!
RYO: Wait a minute! Isn’t your rank a bit high?! (lol)
LEO: From now on, instead of positive thinking, I thought I’d go with “positive king“. (lol) Since I’m from Kansai, I’m doing it to make anything look funny! RYO, you’re up next!
RYO: Everyone, it’s a pleasure to meet you! I’m the natural malicious puppy ✰ Hi!Superb’s lively RYO!! There’s no mistake that if you support me, it’ll make you happy forever! I’ll be in your care!!
LEO: That’s a lot of english there! Whatcha say, SION?
SION: (laughs with a gentle smile)
RYO: I thought it’d be okay to say that with feelings (lol). Next! Let’s go, OMI-kun!
OMI: Hello, Hi!Superb’s OMI here.
RYO: .... Eh-, that’s all!?
OMI: Since I’m introducing myself.
LEO: As usual, OMI-chan is so serious~ (lol). But, let's talk a little bit more!
OMI: There are many things that are said to change, but I’m not aware of having any.
RYO: The things I don’t understand are OMI-kun’s good points, I must be a weirdo!
LEO: And now, MAGU-chan!
MAGURA: Yees! Hello, MAGURA here. I’m the youngest, but I’m relied on and depended on a lot.
RYO: Cute MAGU-chan!
MAGURA: I’m not just cute, I also have a manly side, so watch closely, okay? ♪ Next up, SION!
SION: Hello, everyone. I’m SION. I think it was the fans who removed my veil, so take care of me?
Q. About three months have passed since your debut stage, what is the impression you have of each other?
RYO: Hmm. I think OMI-kun’s weirdness has passed the standard definition!
OMI: ......
RYO: OMI-kun, you’re scary, SCARY!
SION: OMI-kun, glaring is no good, haha.
LEO: For example, what kind of things are you referring to?
RYO: Hmm, like, rare moments that make you go “Eh-, at a time like this?!“ For example, recently, after recording, everyone was “Good, let’s go home~“ and as we left the studio he started eating a lunch box (lol). It surprised me, like “Now!? Rirght now!?“
SION: OMI-kun goes at his own pace.
OMI: Well, SION, I think that you have a quite unique personality, though.
SION: Is that so?
LEO: While you talk, you suddenly start yapping in english, give me a break (lol).
SION: So, does having the same strange aura mean that OMI-kun and I are fellows?
OMI: No, it’s totally different. Stop it.
RYO: Here we go again~! The bashful OMI-kun ☆
OMI: Am not. I’m tootally not shy.
Q. You really get along, huh?
LEO: That’s right. Even on stage we talk eagerly. (lol) As you can see from the flow of the conversation just now, OMI-chan has established a unique world.
MAGURA: Even though there are only 10 minutes left until the stand-by, OMI-kun checks the steps by himself.
RYO: Today too, I was wondering where did he run off, but once he came back he was all sweaty (lol). “Huh!? Did you just come back from a sauna!?”, said Leader to poke fun at him. (lol)
MAGURA: Leader’s comedy acts are always running high, haha.
SION: That’s true!
LEO: Huh? Before I knew it, it’s my turn? (lol)
RYO: Even when Leader is the MC, he sets up his silly booby traps! He’s really reliable! OMI-kun and Leader have totally different personalities, but when they’re standing together on stage they show a really reliable side of them; it gets us all fired up and make us want to work hard!
MAGURA: LEO-kun’s leadership is really something. He pulls us together.
RYO: That's not an aggressive sensation, it’s natural. If I were a girl, I would definitely fall for a guy that has Leader’s qualities~!
SION: But if it’s about being natural that we’re talking about, aren’t you also pretty straightforward, RYO-kun?
LEO: His switch is always on after all. Especially the tension when there’s a meal in front of him is remarkable. (lol)
RYO: I like catering, that’s all!!
MAGURA: Indeed, haha. In front of a catering, RYO-kun’s tension is at its MAX. I think it’s really cute when that happens.
RYO: Eh!?
SION: There’s no mistake, since Hi!Superb’s cute one says so.
RYO: ! Ah, thanks!!
LEO: Also, when I’m the MC you take the lead telling me I gotta be lively during our scenes and enhance the mood, so I’m always saved by that.
RYO: I was praised by Leader! Yaay!
LEO: However, there are also moments when you rush things up, so there’s room for improvement, haha.
RYO: !!
OMI: Because you push your way through as if you’re in a bulfight. I’d be happy if you could calm down a little.
RYO: Uwaaaah~~ I was body-slammed~~ (cries).
SION: I think that having a challenging spirit is amazing.
RYO: Thank you, SION!
A question from Leader that’ll cause the youngest members to be in a pinch.
LEO: To MAGURA and SION in particular, if you were to work with someone from Hi!Superb, who would you choose?
MAGURA: Hmm, let’s see...
LEO: It’s okay if it’s just from your current impressions!
RYO: No, no, I’m scared!
SION: Ehh, It’s troubling because I want to be with everyone.
RYO: Well then! When I went out to eat with SION before, I was told that "I feel so comfortable with RYO-kun!"
SION: I wonder if I really did say that, haha.
LEO: So, is SION saying he’s fine doing things together with RYO?
OMI: Somehow, the pressure here is amazing.
MAGURA: I really want to try being together with everyone, so it's difficult to answer..... But, I'm sure that here “I want to be with you all” is the right answer, right?
RYO: Stop make this look like it’s business! (cries)
LEO: Speaking of MAGU-chan, he has a refined ability to perceive and watch closely his surroundings, haha. Before, during Hi!Superb’s program Hi!SuPunch, I ate something very spicy, but when I was in agony MAGU-chan was the very first that brought me water.
RYO: Although they’re younger than me, I think they’re really reliable. During lives, it’s odd how I often go to the youngers’ (to MAGURA & SION) side, maybe it’s becose I sense safety from them.
LEO: You really love MAGU-chan, RYO!
RYO: True, sometimes I mistake him for a girl! (lol) But when I look at his abdominal muscles, "Ah..... I get it, after all he’s a man" I say, disappointed. (lol)
OMI: That’s obvious.
RYO: Here’s the straight man, OMI-kun getting colder and colder!
OMI: Stop! Don’t stick close to me!
MAGURA: RYO-kun...
SION: Yeah, and a bit of a M.
LEO: SION, what's your impression on MAGURA?
SION: Well... We’re the same age and we get along. It’s kind of like... if you get too close, he’ll disappear, as if there is a hole in one’s heart?
MAGURA: Such a thing, you’re formidable, SION. A natural charisma.
Q. Although the debut single “Turn Into Love” was released on May 30, please tell us about the most important part of the tune title.
LEO: The image and the songs are filled with all the charms that us, Hi!Superb, have now. It's a fascinating song, I think that you can enjoy this single even more if you do it together with us.
MAGURA: The parts of the lyrics, “We’re here now because we could overcome it”, “Shine on our tomorrow“, have this kind of “We’re keeping an eye on the future so we’ll work hard!” feeling. I'd be glad if you noticed not only the performance, but also the rest.
RYO: It's a song filled with the refreshingness of 5 people working altogether for their dream and giving their 10000% in performances!
OMI: It's the song that symbolizes us. From now on, whenever we show off this song, I think that it will keep evolving rapidly. A fascinating song suitable for a debut, so please pay attention at the live and have fun.
RYO: I think it’s a very exciting song! I will do my utmost for the performance, so I hope you enjoy it when I’ll perform during the live. In the lyrics it says “Let’s believe in a world that we drew together”, but it’s filled with thoughts like “It’ll come true with all those who support you!”. I’ll be very happy if everyone can hear it with such feelings!
SION: “Turn Into Love” means “Come to be Love*”. Those who know us and those who don’t, I hope that if you listen to this song your love for Hi!Superb will deepen. It's our important debut song. I think it became a good beginning. In other words, amazing!
MAGURA: It’s our splendid debut song! I think that more songs will see the light from now on, but I think that this became the iconic song of Hi!Superb.
Q. “Turn Into Love” has a MV, but what are the points worthy of note?
MAGURA: There are a lot of lip synch scenes, but each personality comes out amazingly. By all means, find out each of our personalities.
LEO: The lightning tone scene at the beginning leaves a strong impression.
RYO: Yep, yep! Me too, my switch turns on when listening to the thunder at the beginning!
MAGURA: RYO-kun’s lively switch?
OMI: It sounds different when it comes to it.
SION: Suddenly comical, haha.
LEO: But, it may be true that that sound surely contains feelings. At that moment, it really feels like from one we become five.
SION: Usually everyone separes this way, but in this MV a lot of sex appeal comes out.
Q. Thank you very much. Is there anything you would like to challenge yourself with in the future?
MAGURA: Since SION can speak english and chinese, it’d be nice to have a place to use that skill.
RYO: Sounds nice! I want to go overseas!!
OMI: How simple-minded, but I sure want to challenge myself and perform overseas as soon as possible.
LEO: Since our motto is to challenge anything, I'd also like the 5 of us to star in play someday.
RYO: Ah--!! That’s nice too! I wanna do that too! And I'd like to be on the cover page of a magazine! MY★STAR stuff, I’ll be in your care!!
SION: OMI-kun and MAGU-chan already said it earlier, but we shouldn’t stop in Japan; we’ll start up activities overseas and live the american dream (※Editorial note: It was a very good pronunciation....!)
OMI: There’s a part in Turn Into Love that says “To a world we have yet to see”, but I think that the future we can't even imagine is waiting down the road. A play, activities overseas too, precisely because we’re not known I want to challenge myself to see what I can do.
RYO: How nice! Like, basketball!?
OMI: .... What?
MAGURA: Ah, I’ll make the teams.
RYO: As expected, I think that it’s good for the 5 of us to sweat over one spor...
OMI: Leader, the final words to you.
LEO: Eh-!! (lol)
Q. By all means, please give us a final message!
LEO: Understood (lol). Hi!Superb is a group of which charm lies in performances and team work. Said charm can be seen in lives, no matter how many times I say it!! So, anyway, come see us first. If you think you were deceived, I’ll say it one more time! There’s also the MV attached to the special edition CD released in May, so I think you can enjoy it more if you see the images and listen to the songs, that’ll make us happier than anything. But even without preparations, since we’re making a stage that you can enjoy, I’ll say it again, please do come and see us Hi!Superb.
ALL: By all means~!

*Sion actually says “Turn Into Loveの意味は愛に変わるです”. “愛に変わる” means “Turn Into Love”, but in order not to sound redundant, it was changed to something with a similar meaning.

DOWNTOWN URBAN ARTS FESTIVAL Celebrates Its Sweet 16
by BWW News Desk Feb. 16, 2018
This year marks the Season Sweet 16 for the powerful Downtown Urban Arts Festival (DUAF).
The five-week art & culture showcase supplying audiences with live stage works, independent film, cutting-edge music and envelope-pushing poetry, will take up residence in some of lower Manhattan's most thrilling and celebrated spaces.
Running from April 7 through May 12, artists with their finger on the pulse of what the city is thinking will present their works at Theatre 80 St. Marks, Tribeca Film Center, New York Live Arts, Joe's Public at The Public Theater, and Nuyorican Poets Café.
The original theater series (Downtown Urban Theater Festival) was founded in 2001 for the purpose to build a repertoire of new American theater that echoes the true spirit of urban life and speaks to a new generation whose lives defy categorizing along conventional lines. That purpose has since been realized in more than 200 plays created and refined for the stage by more than 170 writers from America's burgeoning multicultural landscape. The addition of film and culture has made DUAF a marriage of the original Fringe Festival and Cannes.
DUAF is produced by Creative Ammo Inc. (CA), a nonprofit community development organization for artists focused on building stronger communities founded in 1998. CA has created solid programs to strengthen communities, foster creativity and celebrate life through art. Artists are an important leverage point in its work. Its mission is to cultivate vibrant communities by connecting artists with the skills and services they need to develop their talent into a marketable skill to pursue a career in the arts. Its programs are inclusive, open and embrace diverse ideas and art forms, and target communities of color and other underrepresented multicultural, women and LGBTQ populations.
This year, the opening night celebration will feature The Voice finalist and teenage sensation, Wé McDonald, who will perform live at Joe's Pub at The Public Theater.
DUAF's film series features the finest works from a search that yielded more than 1,400 submissions for around the world.
And finally, this year's poetry season, called WORDS MATTER, will be a community poetry slam and forum on current social issues. Local poets and audience members can recite their best poems and compete for a cash prize. 2016 Nuyorican Grand Slam Champion Jaime Lee Lewis is the host and special guests have included Lifetime Achievement American Book Award winner, Miguel Algarin.

Irish Coffee and Cigarettes
Im reminded of Robert Hayden’s “ Those Winter Sundays” as the first flurries of snow fall on my window sill.
“Sundays too my father got up early and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold, then with cracked hands that ached from labor in the weekday weather made banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him. “
But my father never did the same, and i didn’t expect him to. I’s not cold enough to turn the heat on. The sun has yet to hear the calling of the world, enjoying those remaining moments to itself. I should do the same, but I can’t go back to sleep, nor do i want to start the day all together. This blanket it too thin. Rubbing my rough, dry, hands together before exhaling a warm breathe through my clasped hands, as though feeding a fire, I tense up. Shaking my pack of American Spirits, a few cigarettes rattle inside. It’s best I make an effort to start my day, but I’m in need of something stronger than simply coffee to warm up to the day. It’s too early for words, the silence has enough to say if we’re willing to listen.
youtube
As the Glockenspiel echo’s at the intro of “Sogg” by Amiina, my vision continues to focus before settling on the staircase now before me. Which each pluck of the Kalimba, a step creaks below my feet, as i drift off into the dreamscape created. The Icelandic’s minimalistic and ambient sound hums lowly from my breast shirt pocket, as i make my way through the still home, illuminated by the flow of the dawn. My mind as quiet as it will be for the remainder of the day.
youtube
Before I’m aware of it, the hissing of the coffee making filling up the pot brings me back to reality, momentarily. Right on time, as I pour what’s left of the shitty whiskey from last night into my coffee filled mug. Before the electronic fizzing is introduced by Air’s “Alone in Kyoto”, and i too dematerialize along with it. For many we might remember “Lost in Kyoto” from Lost In Translation, directed and written by Sofia Coppola. The repetitive nature of the song allows one to seemingly dissociate and get lost in the spacey headspace Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel wanted us to experience along with them. While in the midst of it, there does seem to be a lot going on, it all follows the same rhythmic pattern, providing a pocket to completely wedge oneself into. Materializing as I set foot outside, feeling the stillness of the and the soft accumulation of snow beneath my feat, I take a sip of my coffee, shuddering, followed by a warm chill as the whiskey and coffee sit in the empty pit of my stomach.
Remembering my reason for coming outside, I light a cigarette and exhale as the waves fade the song out, waiting to settle. But we’re well aware that is never the case.
youtube
Much like the unexpected turns that Jazz might take, we have to be willing to let ourselves go to those forces and enjoy the ride for a moment. Ryo Fukui’s “Scenery” is a breath of classic Jazz. being that it was released in 1976, Jazz was going through it’s experimental phase in the states at the time. As a self taught pianist Ryu’s debut was a “take on some of the most classic jazz standards, stunning Japanese audiences”, as Charlie Wooley, of PopGatesstates. Though not received with critical acclaim in the states, i agree with Wooley’s opinion in stating that this is one of the “finest albums of the decade”. Often when listening to music, I like to see how it syncs up rhythmically to the world around me, and as the remaining leaves of fall get swept up in the light breeze brushing up against one another, we hear the synchronicity with rustling snare hits. And as the wind whistles past my ear, sending a chill down my spin I take another sip. Noticing my cigarette is now geralding, i ash it as the final note of the song plays out.
I don’t need an excuse to enjoy the more air nor listen to music, though not the freshest of air but a morning smoke is the perfect time to enjoy both. And as the sun starts to poke it’s head out from the blanket of the night, Ill share with it what i’ve been listening to.
youtube
Going back to Amiina, “Seoul” was the first song that introduced me to the band. I can remember sitting on the roof outside my bedroom window, early spring, because smoking was frowned upon inside the house and what drew my attention to the song was the musical saw used, giving it this almost whale song sound. I had to look further into their music the moment i heard that, and came across the video for the very same song. And what struck me as interesting was how they utilized the instruments and the way they moved around the stage, from one instrument to another. Along with the bells used in this song, we see in the video below that their sharing these instruments as well to create these rich rhythms. Their experience as classical musicians aids in them being able to play as a larger group and compose such songs that one can’t help but find themselves lost within.
But while we get this live instrumentation from Amiina, we drift off into a more electronic sound to close, as the day seems to break, and my mug nears it’s last drop. Funwari-Chan’s “15%” can be categorized as being chiptune, but we with the sampled bird songs interspersed throughout the short song, we are tethered between this virtual reality and the real world. But ultimately are forced back into the real word, as the electronic feel to the song fades, and we are left with the birds calling, to the rest of the sleeping world.
youtube
As the stillness comes to an end, the mind goes back to it’s humming, and starts it’s usual questioning of every and anything. “Why’d I listen to those specific songs, in that specific order?” I never know what to tell it. But i’ve got to think of something. People tend to listen to music based off moods, and are either trying to escape the state of mind that they are at, or are trying to zone into the mind state in which they are in. When we think of musical compositions without lyrics, we often think of classical pieces, requiring us to think more than we’d do if their were lyrics accompanied to them, but letting the mind hum along to a rhythm is never to bad, sometimes we just want something else buzzing in the background rather than our nagging thoughts.
